I just cleared the log. If you haven't already noticed, C5 will now be responsible fot the creation of the heading images. Thanks C5!

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 6, 12:19AM PST (-0700 GMT)
thanks Chris for the clean slate.....

    C5: . . . . Tue, Oct 6, 12:26AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Oh, wow, everyone has to pay homage to me whenever they log on... :-D OK. EVERYONE: The banner above is an interim banner. Once the NHL season gets going, it'll change. The goalies on the banner are there because we chatsters think they're playing exceptionally well. No need to officially nominate a goalie; just worship your favorite goalie as usual, and participate in the chat. Goalies chatsters are buzzing about tend to wind up in the banner... OK? Oh. And if you're new here, you can see a few of the regular goalies at this button ... And if you're a regular who doesn't have your pic up there, I have some time, now, and would be happy to add your pix. Just email them to this button ... OK? OK!

    C5: . . . . Tue, Oct 6, 12:27AM PST (-0700 GMT)
CdP, I'd especially like to see some pic of your new team, and your new equipment.

    Tripp: . . . . Tue, Oct 6, 3:53PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Heh heh... Cool site, C5. I love the pics, guys (and gal). Smottsie, looking good with the paddle down across the ice ;o) Make those pretty boys pick the top corners. I'll have to get a few of my pics scanned from my days in juniors so you can see my ridiculously wide Khabibulin-wannabe stance. I've got a good action photo of me getting plowed over by a 215 lb left winger that should be good for a laugh.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Tue, Oct 6, 4:07PM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5, the team pictures havent been taken, just individual mug shots for PR purposes but you can check out the team website at this button Not much on it really but it should be updated after camp is over. I'll send the pics of my gear to you E-mail

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Tue, Oct 6, 6:48PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'm having a hard time loading this page. No header and sometimes no chat box and send button. Anyone else in the same boat?

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Tue, Oct 6, 7:30PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Problem gone now, go figure. Gremlins in the system I guess

Hey goalies..... I am starting the ice hockey season for the Valley Ice Midget Hockey Leauge. It's alright, just not a lot of talent. I wish I could get a try-out for the Winterhawks, maybe someday. Five Winterhawks go to my school, and I've talked to one of them(Ken Davis). Ken Davis is a pretty nice guy, I've played against him on the ice. He's alright. Today in school I told him good luck tonight, but I thought the game was tonight and it's tomorrow night. Doh! Pretty soon I am going to talk to the head coach of the Billings Bulls, Bliss Littler and talk to him about a possible try-out. I really got to think of my future here. I need to take a chance. If not junior hockey, then I'll try for college hockey..... anyways, C5 I have a pic of me playing hockey. I'll e-mail you it. Alright talk to yah goalies later..... Also, any tips about my career options?

GH have you spoken to local coaches about your opportunities, and your potential to play jrs? Have you had success at each level so far? What about research at various colleges at different Division levels? You can get a cood education together with playing some good hockey at college.....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 6:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey Chatsters a need some persepctive perhaps I am losing my bearings here due to recent shellings....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 6:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)
My shellack of the week was last night, and 8-4 loss to the team that smoked us for 16 goals last time out.....they score 6 in the first, the last 2 particularly aggravating, one deflected neatly in by teh D, the other a rebound the D fanned on and put on the stick of their C who wasn't too startled to bury it past me. After that one I let out an "Arrrggghh" of frustration directed at the cieling.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 6:33AM PST (-0700 GMT)
We shaped up somewhat and played them even after that to the 8-4 final....after the game the Cap comes up to me and says "You know when you yell like that you really demoralize everybody".

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 6:35AM PST (-0700 GMT)
The only other time I opened my mouth was to squawk at the ref after a goal that we all thought was a high-stick....so anyway I'm thinking this team might need a goalie with more self-control than me if one arrgghhh (after Goal #6 in the 1st period) can demoralize everybody.....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 6:35AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...or am I just having a bad hair day? Opinions welcome.

    Grass: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 7:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
This opinion will come as no surprise to anyone who has followed this chat for a while... Unless there is something that you are holding back from us ms. smott, you are still playing for just for funsies (read: paycheck still in the mail) I don't mind shellings if the team is fun to be with (or better yet, lies and tells me "that I kept them in the game!") Bottom line: if it is not fun, stop doing it! [stepping down of soap box]

    Grass: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 7:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
P.S. How is Stately Smott Manor? In good enough shape to start unpacking?

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 7:59AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm I guess I must be having a bad day then

    Vile: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 8:17AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I really doubt an argh would have been the demoralizing factor. I am sure they were upset about 6 goals as well, but the captain wanted something/someone to blame. It doesn't sound like you are hurting for game time, all the teams you sub for etc. Like Grass said, if the team isn't fun...

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 8:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I am not sure how the "playing for fun" initiative, which we all basically do, completely precludes the allowance for frustration.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 8:38AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Are you guys saying that, since none of us get paid and we all primarily play for fun, it then follows that nobody ever gets frustrated? Please elaborate.

    Vile: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 8:41AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well, there are certain frustration threshholds... If this was an isolated incident, and you otherwise love playing with these guys, then no problem.

    Grass: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 8:48AM PST (-0700 GMT)
ms. smott -- Sorry if I garbled my thoughts... [what Grass meant to say:] If you basically enjoy playing with this particular team, and the Captain's comments were an isolated event, then play on. Otherwise, find a different [not necessarily better] team.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 8:54AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm I should elaborate also. The only decent team that ever asks me to play is an occasional A-level sub. The remaining 3-4 teams I have played on last year or so range from mediocre to bad, bad, bad, witness the 77 shot fiasco a couple weeks ago.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 8:56AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Too much bad hockey gets frustrating. But bad hockey is pretty much my only choice, as the only teams that ever ask me to play, aren't very good. If I only wanted to play good hockey I'd hardly ever play at all. So, suggestions welcome.

    fourqts: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 9:11AM PST (-0700 GMT)
hey chatsters.... just Got my team canada R5's yesterday... In the past I had played with player breezers and took the plunge into a real set of goal pants..... I got the correct size but man are they huge..... Felt like I was playing with a load in my drawers last night.... Why is this? My guess is that whole surface area big goalie thing... (The more area you cover the less area for the puck to get through).... But man! These things are huge... Is it just me or is this the consensus feeling???? Also If I have flip ups on my pads (whenever mr Scott gets done with the new ones) are you supposed to cut the ones built into the pants out or what.... As for my league, we got shelled on sunday night... Very fast and numerous competition... Our 7 skaters decided that they were tired after the first and started letting 2 and 3 on ones in often.... Needless to say 8-4 was the outcome and we were not the big winners...

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 9:13AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi fourqts yes the R5s are cut big, I sent mine back for a small size and like the mobility a smaller pant gives me.

    C5: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 9:22AM PST (-0700 GMT)
That's why I skipped out on CNN. Guys not showing up or playing hard on D... it sucked. My new team isn't half the team CNNSI was but they hustle their butts off. It's fun.

    C5: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 9:25AM PST (-0700 GMT)
4qts... those are the same pants I have! I got them a perfectly sized, though, no complaints. They feel more padded than my old pair but the mobility is amazing. I like how they protect my hips so well. I doubt I'll ever get stung in those, not in my league... And the Team Canada logo is cool, too.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 10:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Believe it or not, playing for bad teams and facing a lot of rubber works out in your favor in the long run. Once you get a good team in front of you it's all gravy and it actually gets boring sometimes. I take a shelling at local stick time and get pissed some times but being in training camp now I can see the difference a good group of people out front makes. Now I can play strict hockey without worrying about some fluke play going on in front of the net. But the shellackings I've taken elsewhere definatley gave me a better bag of tricks to pull saves out of. It is hard to play with no one in front of you both mentaly and physically but keep your chin up and chalk it up to experience.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 10:13AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yes CdP I stick with this team because this where I see the best shots (from the opposition!!). I get killed regularly but on the occasions I do get to play with good D things come real easy. However the regular shellackings to get me frustrated at times and I don't think I can keep a lid on that 100% without getting so disconnnected that I can't play my best....

    Mntender: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 10:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott, let the Cap know that your AARRGGHH was not directed ar the team, but at yourself for allowing the goal ( even if it was directed at the team). That will, at times, become more of a rally cry and get your team skating harder, having thought you are taking total blame for a goal. Kinda sneeky but it works. On the youngsters seasons, youngest starts PeeWee (11,12 yrs old) try-outs Saturday. The oldest has moved to a larger city and is skating for a Different High School. HE hopes the better compatition and expossure help him get to acollege or into the USHL Jr. league.

    Mntender: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 10:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
And then maybe he can come home and teach his old man how to spell !

    Grass: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 10:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
4q -- I used to depend solely upon the knee protection in the pants. Then I got stung (twice in two weeks, on the same spot) and I re-installed the knee pads that I had on the pads. I now use both. I thought that it would be a temporary thing (until the knee healed) but I haven't noticed any loss of mobolity (which is not much to speak of anyway!) so, for the moment, I will continue to use both...

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 12:05AM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5 you will eventually get stung through those R5s, thin at the top of the hips....but the payoff is the mobility....

    fourqts: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 12:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I got the smallest size that will fit the kids stuff is just too small and constraining.... But just gola pants in general are large compared to player pants.... I just have to get used to playing in them.... I noticed no mobility problems (they seem to move easily) but they feel big.... gotta get some suspenders to make it a little less awkward... Remember these comments are coming from my 3 months of experience with hockey... I'm learning alot and fast...

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 12:58AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm yes well maybe it will just take an adjustment period. On balance, I do have several pairs of slacks and jeans that fit me, ah, more closely than the R5s....

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 6:30PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott----- Yes, I've been successful in the levels I've played. About Jr.A or B, I don't know because I don't have a lot of money and to be on a team like that it cost over $3,000. I've talked to people, but I need an oportunity. Like try-outs. I can't consult an agent because that will make me un-eligible(sp?) to play college hockey. I have friends in hockey, so I'll talk to them. I have a friend who was an ex-Winterhawk and ex-NHLer. I'll talk to him about it.

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 8:29PM PST (-0700 GMT)
What's that smell...oh, I know...bovine (need I say more). Smottsie, about your frustration, nothing wrong with it - but here is a weird thought. Maybe you haven't been vocal enough? In the past, I have gone ballistic on the ice, but I pick my spots. After a goal - rarely, except to berate myself very publicly. On my teammates, yes - on occasion.

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 8:32PM PST (-0700 GMT)
But only when they are fully deserving of it. And I never ever pick on one guy publicly - it is addressed to the team as a whole and only after a particularly poor effort. But I also am a huge ego booster on the ice, I am in constant communication out there - lots of carrots, the occasional stick.

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 8:33PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Some guys don't respond well. They take it personally, well it isn't personal - it is just about the way one played/worked on a given night. Ooh - soapbox being put away now...

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 9:49PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I agree, Toast. You have to see which guys respond to things. I'm like you, in that I try to keep everyone loose by dishing out the positive reinforcement. I'll yell stuff like "NICE" after they break up a play or block a shot, and tap their shins or give em a pat on the backside.

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 9:52PM PST (-0700 GMT)
But when we have a breakdown, I try to keep it lighthearted instead of screaming and going totally postal. After we give up some breakaways or we're too lax in our zone, I'll grin and say stuff like "take it easy on the defense fellas. It's a long game, so pace yourself." Sometimes stuff like that sinks in better.

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 9:54PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Besides... the guys don't seem quite as eager to clear the crease for me if I fly off the handle and yell. They should expect us to be upset that someone scored, though. I guess it all depends how the guys on your team react.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Wed, Oct 7, 10:28PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Rollercoaster kind of day. Found out this afternoon my loan for a condo was approved. Played in the championship game for my roller hockey league this evening. Got outshot 25-16. Lost 3-2 in overtime. Gave up gamewinning goal on second 2 on 0 breakaway. Bummer. Then found out I won the trophy for the top goalie in the league (2.30 gaa 90.3 save %). I need a nap. And for smott, I have been using the Itech throat gaurd for 4 years now and I love it. It used to be clear, but now it is almost opaque with puck marks. I realize some people are distracted by it. I sometimes use the noise it makes to distract the shooter before he shoots. Kinda ticks them off. Night all

    Goal35: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 8:39AM PST (-0700 GMT)
hey all... smottsie-- nothing wrong with showing frustration at yourself... if you got the right team behind you usually they see that as a sign that they should step it up.... example last nite.... we played like crap both ends, I was never in sync the whole game.. we should have kiled these guys, but lost 5-2 the 3rd goal.. a breakout pass up the middle stole at our blue line, 2-0 breakaway..i stopped the shooter, but couldnt get the rebound... made it 4-1, was a bit miffed at myself... and proceded to trash my 2 game old stick across the crossbar while uttering a few profanities... we never got back in it, but my team has never blamed me for a loss.... even when it is my fault

    C5 : . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 10:21AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott, I recommend the Hextall tension reliever... Sherwood to the back of the knee of the nearest opposing forward... works every time...

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:10AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Heh heh thanks for the advice Chatsters....as for taking hacks at trespassers, gee what if they turn around and take a swing at ME?....:-D

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:13AM PST (-0700 GMT)
On the subject of being vocal, I am actually quite vocal when it comes to the good plays (which is to say more or less silent with some of my teams! heh heh) But yes I do speak up w/encouragemnt all the time, and also I squawk when desperate (i.e. both D decided to line-change turning a 2 on 2 into a 2 on 0 as it came across the blueline, and at that time I could be heard shrieking in dismay....)

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:23AM PST (-0700 GMT)
But a couple of other notes....it is hard for me to address the team in general as I don't share a locker room w/the guys. As such it often takes me months to ecven get toknow everybody's name. They always know mine (but there's only one chick on the team).

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:25AM PST (-0700 GMT)
So establishing rapports is not easy. ALso don't overlook the fact that it is a rare guy whose performance-ego can be boosted by a chick (on ice performance anyway)and as a general rule I hesitate to give instruction or carrots or sticks to the guys because the gender-thing makes it too uncomfortable. So I mostly just keep quiet unless I'm saying "good play".

    Chris: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:26AM PST (-0700 GMT)
    Hey smott

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:27AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Also I tend to think players lead by example. So when I'm digging a dozen pucks out of my net every game I feel like the one that needs advice, not the one who should be giving it. Other Chatsters whose GAA is under 10 may feel differently.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:27AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi Chris, back in a flash.....

    Grass: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:27AM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for yelling "NICE", I have sworn off that particular term... Last season, one of my D did a very nice job of clearing the puck out of the zone, which I applauded with the N word. Unfortunately, the down ice ref thought the other ref yelled "ICE" and blew the play dead as we took control in the far end. Not even close to a real icing, but the ref made the call, so we got to face off in my end anyway... So, now I say great, good, super, etc. anything but "nice"...

    Grass: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)
    Hiya Chris...

    Chris: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)
    Hey Grass

    Chris: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)
BTW, anyone who has IE4 or Win98 installed on a IBM/PC system and who like to be allerted if any chatters are on the chat, listen up...

    Grass: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Thanks again for the site! I particularly like the Archives...

    Grass: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:32AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'm all ears... (said in my best H. Ross Perot voice...)

    Goal35: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:33AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Grass - how do you like your blocker from Scott? I ordered one up a couples weeks ago....

    Grass: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:33AM PST (-0700 GMT)
    I love it!

    Goal35: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)
great.... should hopefully get it in a few weeks...

    Goal35: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:35AM PST (-0700 GMT)
did you get the new Bold or go with the conventional old style?

    Chris: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:35AM PST (-0700 GMT)
If you would like to be notified in your taskbar, then right click on the taskbar and select Toolbars, then New Toolbar.... When the window pops up, select 'My Computer' and delete it. Then type the following URL in its place, you should type it without the quotes "">button You can then play with the size of it to fit your liking.

    Chris: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
whoops, the URL is "goalie.addr.com/chat/forum/chatters.cgi" without the quotes and add a http:// prefix to it

    Grass: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 11:39AM PST (-0700 GMT)
G35 -- I went with the bold. (Basically, I sent Scott a photo of my pads and he matched them up. And did a very nice job!)

    Tripp: . . . . Thu, Oct 8, 8:41PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Geez... maybe I should stop yelling "Nice" after a good play. That's a good point, Grass. It's never happened to me yet, but I can see where someone might get confused.

    : . . . . Fri, Oct 9, 6:06AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Won 4-3 last night. After three games, with 3 goals each game, my gaa is 3, even. In each of the games, though, it should have been one...

    Beatts: . . . . Fri, Oct 9, 7:10AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Toast....Your right, something really does stink in here...can't pinpoint it yet but I have an idea.....

    : . . . . Fri, Oct 9, 8:40AM PST (-0700 GMT)
No, now, let's be nice... at least we're not READING EVERYTHING IN CAPS... :-D

    Toast: . . . . Fri, Oct 9, 11:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Beatts - in pysch we are talking about altered states of consciouness - like daydreaming...highly applicable. And smottsie - glad you added that clarification about on ice encouragement...:)

    Toast: . . . . Fri, Oct 9, 11:40AM PST (-0700 GMT)
And if you want a challenge - trying going ballistic with small kids around and not resorting to using those nasty words you would prefer kids not learning until a little older...how is that for responsible frustration?

    Toast: . . . . Fri, Oct 9, 11:42AM PST (-0700 GMT)
And as for Mr. Stick meeting Mr. Crossbar - that is one habit I managed to kick. Haven't broken a good stick in anger in years...but I do carry a cracked one in case I need to make a mid-game switch for a visual prop.

    C5: . . . . Fri, Oct 9, 3:26PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Gads... Do you guys think that ordering sticks jinxes your old ones? I have broken a stick during warmup in each of my last two games! At this rate, I'll be in the poor house by next month!

    C5: . . . . Fri, Oct 9, 3:27PM PST (-0700 GMT)
(I mention that because I finished each of them off on the crossbar, Toast. The (three or so) fans thought I was being a jerk and taking warmup a BIT too seriously; they didn't realize the stick was already broken.)

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Fri, Oct 9, 3:40PM PST (-0700 GMT)
    C5, you get my E-mail?

    Toast: . . . . Fri, Oct 9, 5:58PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ah - C5, perfectly understandable. But save them, they make good smash em's in the dressing room after a game, I have done that too!

    C5: . . . . Sat, Oct 10, 8:12AM PST (-0700 GMT)
T, oh riiight, Smott, you listening? No one can tell they're broken. Save those cracked sticks for the 2nd period intermission and when you're in the dressing room, just jump up and smash the stick to kindling on the concrete wall. Once you've got your teammates' attention you can make that passionate, "go get 'em" speech.

    C5: . . . . Sat, Oct 10, 8:13AM PST (-0700 GMT)
CdP, I meant to mention your email! Yes, I got it, and your equipment looks smashing. How do you like the battram glove? It looks cool, like a Helite IV with a couple railings installed on it.

    Beatts: . . . . Sat, Oct 10, 8:52AM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5, I notice that your picture page might be a bit out of date, There are a few of us whose pictures have gone missing...

    Toast: . . . . Sat, Oct 10, 10:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey C5 - gotta have a sense of theatre y'know.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Sat, Oct 10, 1:09PM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5. the glove(s) and pads are holding up great. Used them all through the training camp where they saw a lot of ice time as well as at stick times. The equipment is every bit as good as I described it on the review board. The catcher glove makes a distictive snap sound when you snag down a shot with heat on it, the pocket is great. Scott makes some damn good equipment if you ask me.

STICK SMASHING-- Never really agreed with it , especially after an incident in which this goaltender threw his stick out over the rink and hit a palyers son.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Sat, Oct 10, 5:41PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ever notice that when a player smashes a stick on the ice or the boards no one says much but when a goalie smacks the posts or crossbar it's a big deal? even more so if you break your stick while doing so. I smashed a stick once to the point that it didn't look like a stick anymore. It felt good at the time but afterwards the looks I got from people not to mention the embarassment I caused for my wife as well as myself outweighed the instant gratification 10 fold. I no longer par-take in stick smashing, it just isn't cool no matter how you rationalize it. What really made me feel bad was that there was children there that witnessed it, which is another reason I'll never do it again.

    : . . . . Sat, Oct 10, 6:25PM PST (-0700 GMT)
CdP, heh, good point. Like I say on my website, a goalie is the priest of the team (musings at this button ..). I've only smashed two sticks, and that was just to finish them off. They still shoot horses, don't they? That sort of thing. I PAY to play (unlike others in this chat I won't mention, thankyouverymuch), so my attitude is that I'm there to have fun, and that's all. I'm pretty laid back. I just got called to play some upper AA hockey tomorrow night, and I'm so excited about it that I could pee myself... hopefully I can be laid back and good tomorrow night.

    5: . . . . Sat, Oct 10, 6:27PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Love it that your glove makes that snap. mine makes that snap, too, when you catch it sweet in the trap. Beauty, as they say in Canadia. I don't need new pads, yet, but when I do, they'll be battrams...

    C5: . . . . Sat, Oct 10, 6:28PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Oh, Chris, re-submitted your site to the search engines. The old address was there. And beatts, will check chat page as soon as I get to work. Sorry if anyone has been accidentally dropped.

C5 did you get my email from a while back? Took a 3-3 tie tonite against one of the teams tied with us. Now its 4-1-1. Battram equip working excellent.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Sun, Oct 11, 5:39AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Caught the 3rd period of the 'Canes vs Tampa game last night, Ended in a tie after OT. The Kidder wasn't looking all that good but he really didn't have much help back there either. Tampa was controlling the ice and the puck a great deal of the time. Puppa on the other end though was making some really good saves, looking really solid. With Puppa back on the ice and Ranford on the pine I don't think young Schwab will get much ice time unless one of the old dogs gets hurt. On another note,I've heard that the Beezers new paint job is awesome, got the bee motif going on it. I'm sure we will see it soon enough.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Sun, Oct 11, 6:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
more good new on the home front. the training camp I walked onto payed off. I am now the emergency backup goaltender. with 70 games to the season the odds of me getting in net aren't that bad seeing how the starting guy already has a pulled hip flexor. Just goes to show....where there's a will there's a way. The best part of it is that when ever I'm called to ride the pine I'll actually be getting paid to do so, good seat to watch the game and making money, pretty cool eh?

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Sun, Oct 11, 6:25AM PST (-0700 GMT)
All I can say is watch CNNSI or the sports channel. Lasts nights games around the league wern't what one would expect from some of the more talented net minders. Martin and Chris not looking all that hot.

CdP, Beezers new mask is really interesting. The base color is the Flyers orange in metalflake. There is a bees head on each side. The bees eyes are the same metal flake orange and the rest of the bee is done in chrome. On the back of the mask is beezers little bee logo and a "Z" in chrome. The cage itself is also chrome. Bill Clement kept raving about the mask in the flyers opener.

Hey goalies..... about my hockey career. I've been talking to a goaltender who plays in the WSHL. He recommends I try that league. I have some numbers of the coaches in that league and I am going to talk to them about try-outs for next year.

    Tripp: . . . . Sun, Oct 11, 3:32PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Speaking of starting goalies having some trouble... how about Mike Richter last night? 7-1 loss to Montreal, and Rickyrod was in there for all 7. He didn't have a whole lot of help, but he did give up a touchdown. I felt bad for him. He's a truly good guy. NY better pull the trigger on a deal pretty soon. They're going nowhere.

    Toast: . . . . Sun, Oct 11, 9:20PM PST (-0700 GMT)

Hard in roller.... Also got scored on by my own teamie for the first time in my career... Deflection off his stick through five hole... ARGH!!!!! But a win is a win 2-1 on season.. Had to hack an opponent in the ankle for taking a swipe at my hand during a freeze. Congrats CdP

Hi all. El Sievo has returned. Have been roaming around England for the past 11 days looking for someone to talk hockey with. No luck, but what a great country... Congrats CdP, hope you get some ice time soon. If you ask me even bench time would be pretty cool.

    Sieve: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 8:43AM PST (-0700 GMT)
smott, your capt. sounds a little touchy to me. If my guys got demoralized everytime I opened my mouth they'd be on the brink of suicide by now. They understand its just a vent . In a position as frustrating as goalie, i think i'd blow a cog if I didnt let it out now and then.

    C5: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 9:24AM PST (-0700 GMT)
HAPPY THANKSGIVING to those Canucks on the chat...

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 9:26AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Thanks everyone, I agree with you Sieve, bench time would be pretty cool too. The best part about the whole experience was the little things I learned that make a world of difference. I've been trying to share these things with friends at the local rink who play out. For example, One thing I've noticed about everyone on the ice was that all of them continually move their feet, no gliding. This goes back to the need for short shifts 30 seconds mabye 60 on powerplays. I also noticed the goalies in camp move far less than what I expected. most stayed at the top of the crease, centered and on occasion came out about 1-2 feet above the crease to cut angle, less than I had expected. Overall, the movement was very minimal up until the other guys were established in the zone. offensive play is very structured, we worked on one "play" for the whole practice that I think is the key to sucess. It's nothing new or enlightening but seeing it done correctly from ice level made more sense. Basic hockey if you ask me. Work it up the boards, once in the zone set the play up from the corner(s) passing to the slot or to the point or weak side until you've created a weakness to exploit. This really opens the ice up and forces the other team to spread out. The key was the offense needs to play their specific zone and pass when they start to feel to much pressure. In contrast, I went out to stick time with the guys and it seems like total chaos with no one playing any position, kind of like little kids hockey where everyone chases the puck and WAY slower. I actually find it harder playing stick time than camp practices.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 9:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
From a goalies perspective I noticed most never made the first move. Just like we've all heard before, but it's true. it seemed like most of the guys just stood there and the pucks hit them. This I attribute to being in good position, didn't see any spectacular glove saves or the like. Just really good basics, strong butterfly technique and good foot movement. I recommend to everyone to just go watch training camps from down by the ice and the things you can learn from watching far outweigh what you read about or have explained to you.

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 10:52AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Mike Richter is a good goaltender, he just needs a good team in front of him. Wayne Gretzky can't do it all by himself anymore, he needs a who can finish the play. Mike Richter just needs his confidence back, and he'll be okay.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 11:57AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ah hmmm I have to place Mikey Richter in the overrated/overpaid category.....he does have one Cup and a great World Cup performance under his belt, but, for the $$$ he's getting paid, forget it. Find a promising youngster and save some cash I say, but saving cash has never been NY's state of mind....

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 11:58AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm smashing a stick in the locker room eh?? Well I think I'd create a stir to begin with just by crashing the guy's room! Heh heh but yes it sounds like it might get their attention beyond the obvious of one chick/15 guys kinda attention.....

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 11:59AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Guys my new house is EXHAUSTING me...if I nver see another paintbrush again it'll be too soon....stumbled off to a 10:30 game last night and go figure but I threw a donut for 4-0. Stuff just hit me. Things that make ya go hmmmm...

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 12:00AM PST (-0700 GMT)
And CONGRATS CDP!!!!! I believe you are the only Chatster currently getting paid to do what we all love! Way to go!!

    Tripp: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 12:04AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I got a look at VBK's mask last night. Tough to watch, since he's still my all time favorite Ranger and seeing him in the hated orange and black almost made me sick... Anyway, I don't think those are bees on the sides of his mask. I think it's the Philadelphia "P". It's all jagged and twisted, but I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Kind of a weird color. Really shiny orange with the silver flecks in it. Talk about technically sound with your angles! If he moved any less, he'd be a statue. He always seems to get in front of the puck, though. Philly will be tough to stop if they can keep it together mentally.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 12:22AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Thanks Smott, but I haven't gotten a check yet. I think I'll keep my real job, I'm pretty sure I bring home more than the star player does right now. No million dollar hold outs here, just guys happy to get paid for playing. I'd wager most of us here bring in more than those guys do with just hockey alone. Mind you they don't have to worry about housing and furniture and the like so that makes it a little bit better for them. One thing that did blow me away was the way they through around those $100 Easton sticks. I picked one up off the bench thinking someone had forgotten it and took it to the forwards locker room and they all looked at me like i was crazy for bringing it back. Thats when I looked over at the wall and saw it lined with probablly 50-60 of those $100 sticks. Thats another good thing about camp, all the sticks ,tape, you name it you want. Tools to file sticks down or curve blades. It looked like wood shop in the locker room at one point, I just had to laugh.

Hey CdP, I just had one of the thigh pads rip out of my R6 pants so I'm seriously thinking about taking them back and buying the Ridges. Where did you get yours? Did you get the thigh guards?

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 6:59PM PST (-0700 GMT)
So, anybody catch Storr today? If he keeps playing like that, Fiset's the #1. He wasn't bad, but Fiset was great against Edmonton.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 7:00PM PST (-0700 GMT)
RG, I got my ridges from SFSL with the thigh/knee guard. The only problems I've had wit them so far is sometimes they pop out from underneath the pant leg, nothing major just annoying. The second is the fabric started to seperate from the elsatic on the knee guard from velcroing them down tight. I fixed it easy enough with a neddle and thread and don't cinch them down as tight now. Still a fantastic pair of pants though, bombproof

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 7:12PM PST (-0700 GMT)
...and Beezer has just extended his career by about 5 years...22 shots/night? Toto, we're not in Miami anymore...

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 7:17PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Thanks. I temporarily fixed the knee guard in the R6's with a few stitches but the whole end of it is frayed and I can see that Bauer (or some poor 8 year old Nike employee in Taiwan) is using cheap thin nylon there. I've heard the same thing about Bauer's c/a's (cheap nylon) but I'm sure you'll let us all know if you're starts to fall apart.

    C5: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 7:21PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Wow, NHL season starts, and the chat gets pretty stimulating. Way to go, chatsters, good reading. CdP, I'm glad to hear you mention that playing stick time is worse than a game. I tend to let in more goals at the CO-ED level than I do anywhere else. You have to wratchet down your timing to such an excruciatingly dull, slow extent that you just can't HELP but let some surprisingly weak shots in. I'd rather play AA anytime. The shots are harder, but the plays and shots seem to make more sense, does anyone follow that? DSS flyers coming, going to order the sports package, can't wait to get the satellite TV thing going and watch some hockey. G'night...

    C5: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 7:22PM PST (-0700 GMT)
RG, I have the R5's, and I like the quality, so far, but I think all us goalies are going to learn pretty quickly that it's best to stick with Canadian-made stuff (preferably from a small, affordable custom-shop, CdP?)... ;-)

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Oct 12, 9:11PM PST (-0700 GMT)
    AMEN to that :-)

Looks like Richter had a bad night as well as ROY. Dafoe and the Dom had a pretty good night though. Looks like all the powerhouse teams are having a hard time getting the ball rolling early on this season. Any bets on tonights game Detroit vs Washington? This should be a good one if it's anything like last years game.

    Sieve: . . . . Tue, Oct 13, 12:25AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi all. Cdp, other than Philly, or do we no longer consider them a powerhouse? sure look like one out of the gate. SI has them at #4 in their preseason rankings. Any opinions of the B's this year? Maybe its the youth/underdog factor, but I enjoy seeing the kids (and Ray B. - great) playing their guts out.

    Sieve: . . . . Tue, Oct 13, 12:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...and Detroit shall handle the Caps as long as Ozzie is not allow to handle the puck. Went to MLG last Sat. to see opener against the Leafs - he had a solid game in net, a couple of unreal glove saves, but his bad stickhandling probably cost Det. the game.

    Tripp: . . . . Tue, Oct 13, 4:43PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ricky had a rough night and then some against the Blues. St. Lou was winning the faceoffs as clean as I've ever seen, and Macinnis had all the time in the world to wind up and fire. Not a good idea for any team. Hey Sieve, you were at the Leafs game, eh? Did CuJo switch from Louisville to Bauer gear?

Kidd had a rough start in the 1st and got yanked, they knocked the dust off of Irbe and he did a good job but the man tonight in Nashville was Dunham, he stood on his head without a doubt. Det vs Wa game a close one as well. Ozzy had a 5 hole shot slip in and Ollie just didn't seem to have much luck but he hung in there.

Who does that leave in the NHL that wears Louisville gear now? CUJO seemed to be their main spokesman, guess he got more money offered from those 2 companies then Louisville. Has anyone actually seen a pair of those pads that have some sort of "air bag" in them from Louisville?

Morning all. Yes Tripp, Cujo had Bauer pads on. As far as I could tell from section 64, they are R5's. One thing for sure, they definitely worked. He shut my guys down that night. Shame seeing Felix riding the pine...

I saw Guy Hebert switched from Heaton to Bauer, too. I think he has a full set of the R3's. The pads that crack me up are Trevor Kidd's. The red and white pads with the hurricane flag design. He looks like he's wearing a picnic tablecloth. Or a checkerboard.

From what I hear SwooshBauer is making equipment in therr countries.... Canada (The Pro Stuff)[most expensive], The US (retail upper end stuff) and Taiwan (lower end retail stuff)..... The Canada stuff is about 1.5 times the cost of the US made stuff

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Wed, Oct 14, 6:09PM PST (-0700 GMT)
All my R6 gear says made in canada on it. I think the US companies kick out the player gear. I can see the R1 stuff coming out of taiwan they way its built. Bauer has a site at this button

    fourqts: . . . . Wed, Oct 14, 10:03PM PST (-0700 GMT)
CDP I checked around in phoenix and there is a huge variation in price when specifying that you want the Bauer Canada Stuff. The Canada Stuff is embroidered (SP) with a made in Canada logo... The US and Taiwan stuff is missing that as well as a huge amount of quality... I had saw two sets of Rea 4 pads at the Coyotes Training facility and the made in canada pad was far superior in craftsmanship. You could tell by looking at them.... They wanted 899 for the Us react 4's and 1499 for the canada pads...... WHOA

    C5: . . . . Thu, Oct 15, 7:09AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Speaking of quality, 4qts, last night one of the goalies showed up with a Heaton Helite III, and you should have seen this glove. I couldn't believe it. It looked like a Mylec or something. The stitching was off, I mean way off, and the edging on the wrist guard had come out and some of the thick, waxy white plastic foam was exposed. I'm not even sure it was real leather (my Koho Revolution 550 isn't, though, either, but it's of exceptional quality so far). My question is this: Do the manufacturers make "mock ups" or reserve mistakes to send to hockey shops for display purposes? I ask because this glove was sold to a real goalie (if you call allowing 11 games in an C league level game a 'real' goalie) under the pretense of its being a REAL glove. I wonder where if Heaton knew about this they'd be angry with the shop that sold this glove. I've seen some bad gloves in my day (Don Simmons jumps to mind) but this Heaton, normally a reputable manufacturer (opinions?) was so far off the mark that I was literally thinking about it in my net for a good portion of the game.

    Tripp: . . . . Thu, Oct 15, 9:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Man, when you're hot you're hot...eh, Byron? Shots hitting the posts, goal disallowed... oh well, as long as you throw a doughnut, I guess it doesn't matter how ya get there. Strange about that Heaton glove, C5. I had a Pro 90z a few years ago, and it held up really well for me. I've been using a Vaughn 5500 lately, but I got good use out of that Heaton.

Seive, the grey goalie was ME... Just as a joke I was going to put myself up there, but that would have been pointless, skill-wise... heh. So I grayed the pic out and put the "?" in, to generate some discussion about the new banner. And the results are in. Right to left, we have Dafoe, Hasek, Turek Hebert, and Snow. The first two, Hasek and Dafoe, are chatsters recommendations. The rest are just filler, I'm afraid, until the both our discussion and our season get a full head of steam.

    C5: . . . . Thu, Oct 15, 9:17AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi, Tripp, how's it going? The new banner is in. Where do you live, and where/what kind of hockey do you play?

    fourqts: . . . . Thu, Oct 15, 9:25AM PST (-0700 GMT)
The new banner is cool and I was gonna suggest Defoe get a little play because of his back to back doughnuts..... WTG

I had SO much fun last night. Beast the Cyclones 7-1, and I'll admit, we would have won no matter who was in net, since their goalie wasn't so hot. But the game was closer than the score indicates. There were a few times where I absolutely ROBBED their guys. One play this guy seemed to come from nowhere in the corner to get a 2 on 1 pass (they had been in the zone for a while but stopped our breakout at the blue line), and I stretched and dove over to stop his stuff-in with my stick, then he picked up his own rebound and tried to lob it over me but I blocked it with my glove... How I did this I don't know, since the first save was made just with the heel of my stick... I made a total of about 3 or 4 saves before getting that puck. He was pretty frustrated. I swear, when I stretch like that, I feel 7 feet tall. After the game their guys were saying it wasn't fair for them to bring in a ringer, but I play in that league, so it's fair... Nothing makes a forward feel more stupid than when he's got a wide open net and he hits the goalie's stick...

Went and saw the coyotes pound on the avs last night.... Billington played for the avs (would liked to have seen ROY) but boolin was huge. they scored two against him, but neither was his fault... the first one was actually scored by Dallas Drake (a yotes player)... He was coming back to pick up a loose puck and just smashed into boolin who was trying to direct it towards the corner... The second was made on an incredible pass from forsberg right on the tape to deadmarsh (sp).. Boolin was in the proper position (covering the puckhandlers shot (forsberg) but could not get across the crease fast enough to stop the shot... he played solid... Gotta give him his props.

hi all. my paper tells me Jeff Reese (now w/ Vipers in IHL) has decided to hang 'em up. Trivia question of the day: What's Jeff's NHL claim to fame??? Winner's picture goes up on the banner... (how about it C5?)

    Tripp: . . . . Fri, Oct 16, 12:39AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey there, C5. I'm originally from Harrisburg, PA (although I spent most of my summers up in Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia). Right about now, I'm not playing too much competitive hockey. I had my left shoulder reconstructed twice, and the rehab seems like it's taking forever. Hopefully I can get back into the groove pretty soon.

    C5: . . . . Sat, Oct 17, 5:23PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Seive, I'm clueless on the trivia question. I give. I'm game on changing the banner any time, but it's a buzz thing, so I usually just put up whatever NHL goalies we're all buzzing about. Tripp, I know how that rehab can be... I completely pulled a hamstring and it took forever to get going, and it's still not 100%. I have never been to Nova Scotia, but if it's anything like New Hampshire, which I have been to a couple times, it's got a lot going for it... plus being in Canada... ;-)

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Sat, Oct 17, 6:07PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Just back from DC, took my bro-in -law to his first hockey game, NHL at that. I had no idea the nose bleed seats in the MCI center were that high. We were on the same floor with the media and the replay room. Actually the view wasn't bad, you could see the whole ice from end to end. it was a pain in the ass getting my bro in laws wheel chair up to that level even with the elevators, the wait was killing me. The one good thing about it though was after the game we rode the elevator down with Gonchar and Corske(sp?) and a bunch of other Yahoos in NHL blazers. However, I had no pen or paper so I settled for a hand shake. In hind sight I screwed up big time though. The elevator went all the way down to the locker room level first and we could of gotten off with the players and smoozed out way into meeting some of the guys had I been thinking. Kinda hard telling a guy in a wheel chair with one leg to beat it when he asks to meet a player eh? Well theres my little adventure to DC, which by the way I would NEVER, EVER want to live in. Talk about Chaos

Cdp, They put the handicapped area that high up in Wash.? Kinda defeats the purpose. The wheelchair area at the Joe are in a good spot.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Sun, Oct 18, 9:07AM PST (-0700 GMT)
No, they had other parts of the center that where wheelchairs could be accomidated but when you take the whole family out to the game the idea of $50. 00 a head or more for the lower seats is a bit discouraging not to mention hard on the wallet. I just had no idea that the seats we had would be on a 55 degree slope to the ice haha

    Toast: . . . . Sun, Oct 18, 12:19AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Reese has a claim to fame? Part of the Dougie trade perhaps? I take it is something more than that...wait, I think he gave up a big goal. Hmmm...gotta let the brain simmer on this one.

    fourqts: . . . . Sun, Oct 18, 10:24PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey all got saved by offense tonight.... Let in 8 but one by one.... I felt about as thick as a toothpick.... but had two nice saves late in the game to seal it (probably the only two of the game).... Anyone have any ideas to make the other team have second thoughts about swiping at my glove when i freeze the puck.... The refs decided it was ok to let them have a few hacks before the whistles....

    Sieve: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 5:28AM PST (-0700 GMT)

Here in the Burgh my poor Pens have gone into bankruptcy, with a scary do-nothing response from the league. Is Bettman asleep at the wheel or what? League should take over the team and find a buyer, instead they stand by and watch the owners feud and the creditors line up for numbers.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 6:11AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Meanwhile the team I think looks less bad than expected, in fact, dare I say it after the departure of Ronnie Francis, the Pens are a more skilled bunch this year than last. Second line maturing well with Lang & Morozov and the addition of German Titov ( I know, who??) has been a pleasant surprise, that line currently matching Jagr's in output, and with 2 lines scoring my Birds should be OK, even in the new division. Plenty of room at the bottom for the Isles and Rangers. Heh heh.

Well I could be partially out of my funk, thanks for asking....I kept my mouth shut last game with my easily-demoralized teammates and only lost 7-0 instead of the 16-something firefight last time out with that team....

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 9:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Last 3 games in my better matched B & C leagues had a close 4-3 losee, a 4-0 win and last night I managed to steal a 2-1 win. Really had some lucky saves but who's complaining?

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 9:02AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ever see Hasek do one of those roll-on his back, throw pads-in-the-air kind of saves? With about a minute left I did one of those on an empty net rebound, whattya know the guy buries it off my toe as I fling pads skyward.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 9:02AM PST (-0700 GMT)

And hmmm all I know about Reese is he used to play for Calgary...is he now with the Vipers?....

    gbfreeman: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 9:35AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sieve, would it be the fact that he was the winning goalie (while) playing for Calgary) in a 13-1 shelling of San Jose? Irbe started let in 6 or 7 and Hackett finished the mess. Happened in 1993.

    Tripp: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 10:08AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Fourqts... I can't believe your teammates wouldn't come flying in and bury that guy who's whacking at your glove. Tell him that the next time he does it, he'll be picking splinters out of his "manhood" for the next 2 weeks. If he does it again...POW up with the goal stick right between the legs. That usually gets the point across

    Sieve: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 10:24AM PST (-0700 GMT)
right on Tripp... good guess gbfreeman, but thats not it. I'm pretty sure you are in the right year, though. smott, he announced his retirement last week, thats what prompted the Reese triv. Answer coming later this afternoon... keep 'em coming.

    fourqts: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 10:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I warned the other teams captain after the first to smacks to the hand, and that seemed to do no good so i started bring the stick to the back of an ankle or two.... and the refs were on my ass threatening a penalty..... I said do your F**King job then and knock this S**t off before i start swiping at your ankles. They were not to hip on that.... As for the teamies they did a little shoving but I need to get them more into it i think... Fingers are a valuable thing, Especially since I have to type all the time to get my questions answered (meant as a compliment to you all).... as for all the goals i let in, has anyone ever just been behind on every save an entire night.... My hands and legs were going to the right places, but just not in time.

    Goal35: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 11:39AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey all.... had a fun game last nite, we won 10-1, lost my bagel with 3 mins left with a screen shot off my head into the net... I knew most of the guys on the other team... felt sorry for their goalie - between periods his teammates are at my net talking to me... hehehe p.s. we still need goailes, i was out of town this weekend, I turned down 6 games for subbing.... Am hoping to get to an Admirals game this week and see Fichaud now that Nashville swapped him down here for the rookie Tomas Volkoun... saw him play in the opener the 9th.. had a strong game but got killed in the shootout..

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 11:58AM PST (-0700 GMT)

    Hey smott.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 12:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)

    Sieve: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 12:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)

Congrats 4qts !!!! Jeff Reese holds the NHL record for assists in one game for a goalie (3). I'm not sure but I think it may have been in that blow-out in '93 that gbfreeman spoke of.

    Sieve: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 1:07PM PST (-0700 GMT)

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 1:07PM PST (-0700 GMT)
OK how about this after more snooping.....92-93 season I believe....Jon Casey of Minnesota and Jeff Reese of Calgary battled for 4 periods in a rare 0-0 (OT) tie. Reese made 37 saves and Casey made 38.

Well chasters i found out today that had I been around this last weekend I would of gotten to dress and ride the pine for the first home game. As it stands, they called the other guy who walked on with me to do just that. Seems the likely starter quit along with a former goalie who had played for the coach elsewhere. This left the coach asking the guy who he had just cut to stick around while he was cleaning his locker out. Talk about a second chance. It looks like it was a good choice, the guy has had 2 outstanding games so far. As it stands I'm still trying to find out who they got to ride the pine for the away game since said 2nd walk on was unable to make the away game. I could kick myself right now , talk about bad timing. I guess if it can happen once it can happen again. I'll keep my fingers crossed for sure.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Mon, Oct 19, 10:28PM PST (-0700 GMT)
OOOOOOOH I am so mad!!!! Playing in a league that does stop time in the final 2 minutes of game only (roller). Faceoff in our end. Leading by one we lose the face off, other team takes a shot, I direct the rebound behind the net, my team controls, skates around for about 5 seconds, and then we ice the puck. Guess what? The time keeper didn't start the clock!!!!! No video replay in this league. Ref doesn't run off any time from the clock (about 15 seconds elapsed). Other team pulls their goalie and score with 8.3 seconds left to tie. I don't mind losing a victory to a better team (Okay, I lie, I hate it) but to lose the victory to a timekeeper truly sucks. Just had to vent. On the upside, still undefeated (6-0-3) with one game left. Locked up number one seed. Also, C5 I get an error (file not found) when I click the button in your last post.

Anybody have a pet peeve about giving up early & late goals?.....Lats night in B we are down 5-3 after 2...4 of the goals scored in first or last minute of a period, including the first goal on a giveaway right off the opening faceoff, and one scored with 2 tics left in the 1st. Makes me mad enough to spit.

    Sieve: . . . . Tue, Oct 20, 7:27AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I got a taste of old school last during last nights game. Took an elbow or something to the back of the head, popped my mask right off. Ref somehow didnt notice. Played maybe 20 seconds or so (constant pressure) sans headgear before my guys clued the ref in. Talk about nervous time !!!

    C5: . . . . Tue, Oct 20, 8:05AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott, you have been mad a lot of late. Our little 'come what may' Smottsie hasn't had her sleep/relaxation/accupuncture, recently, huh? Attention, goalies : Excess paint fumes make you and irritable and edgy goalie! ;-)

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 20, 9:00AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ouch Sieve, yes those refs were napping big-time. In our leagues here play is blown dead if goalie loses helmet I believe. EVen if skaters lose their lids they have to stop and get it back on immediately or whistle....

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 20, 9:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yah C5 I am prickly for sure. House stuff wiping me out, also my hockey schedule is icky, usually play 3 games between Sun - Wed all late-night which does make me sleep-deprived....

This team in particular has been disappointing. Lost a couple of our best guys and have gone from champs 3 sessions ago to out of the playoffs. Now 1-3 and won only 2 games of the last 8 going back to last season. Lots of strangeluck too it seems. After getting horseshoes galore in my Sun game I couldn't buy a break last night. Go figure.

This should definately help work off that fine Canadian beer....My belly is smiling ... ;~)

    Beatts: . . . . Tue, Oct 20, 12:04AM PST (-0700 GMT)
BTW...We won 5-0 on saturday...3-0 so far with two goose-eggs !! Mind you I haven't had to work too hard for them...We picked up two more players that played OHL a couple of years ago...Holy Crap can they shoot.....

    Beatts: . . . . Tue, Oct 20, 12:05AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey Toast, Maybe the Winterhawks will give me a contract !! haha hidden joke..

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 20, 12:12AM PST (-0700 GMT)
YOW that is too much for one day!! I have played pickup in the AM and 2 games in the PM and that is enough to need a stretcher to get outta there.....of course I am OLD......

    gbfreeman: . . . . Tue, Oct 20, 12:17AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Rock and a hard place time. Last game versus Colorado Stephan Fiset leaves game with strained left groin. Jamie Storr comes in and in the 3rd period strains his right groin. Today the Kings recalled Manny Legace from Long Beach (IHL) and Alexey Volkov from Halifax of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. 3rd and 4th string goalie being pushed into starter and backup. Luckily the Kings next 2 games are against Florida and Tampa Bay. Welcome to the show and good luck guys.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 20, 12:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
gb GOOD LUCK with the move......I thought I had everything planned but got stood up left & right by contracters....as for mortgages, well once I did themath and figured out the interest over 30 years I couldn't stand it so I sucked it up for a 15 yr plan....of course now I will be poor....at least until tax-time heh heh....

    gbfreeman: . . . . Tue, Oct 20, 2:28PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Quick food for thought. With his performance so far this season, how much of last years success in Colorado can be attributed to the size of Patrick Roy's jersey (tent)? Maybe he is having confidence problems instilled by the press' constant questions regarding changes in goalie equipment. Also, got to love the fact that even with all the changes instituted by the NHL scoring is down by almost a goal a game and goalies are on a pace to pass last seasons all time record for shutouts by 80. There have already been 11 shutouts this season. The changes seem to be affecting skaters more that goalies (to much thinking behind the net, numerous offsides due to different locations of the blue lines). The angles and sight references haven't changed for the goalies that much, but they have changed significantly for the forwards. Just a random thought I thought I'd throw out.

Hee hee - Beatts...loud and clear.

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Oct 21, 5:22AM PST (-0700 GMT)
morning all. GB, wasnt Patty boy one of the player reps on the committee du change for goalie equipment. Would've loved to have been a fly on the wall at those meetings... They moved the blue lines too?

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 21, 5:59AM PST (-0700 GMT)
hmmm yes good observations gb....but I did think the greater distance behind the net would really help the O get set up by hampering goalie's attempts to stop/clear the puck....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 21, 6:00AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...however I believe the points you mentioned may be temporary....guys are going to get used to the new spacial relations and use it to their advantage....eventually...

    gbfreeman: . . . . Wed, Oct 21, 7:42AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sieve, Patrick wass initially on the committee but according to Darran Pang, he eventually stopped going and Craig Billington took his place. Yes, they moved the blue lines two feet closer to center ice to offset the extra space behind the net. So, all those just onside tape to tape passes last year are offsides this year. Smott, yes I also think that the O will eventually use the extra room to their advantage. But, as happened when the NBA moved the three point line and suddenly everyone thought they were three point shooters, it seems (in the early going) that people think they are Gretzky behind the net. Teams that never relied too heavily on setting up from directly behind the net are trying to do it and the offense seems to be suffering. The "Great One" himself said in an interview (on ESPN) that he wasn't crazy about the extra space behind the net.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Wed, Oct 21, 7:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
The Kings are waffling about the status of Stephan Fiset. They put Jamie Storr on IR and recalled the two goalies I named in an earlier post, but they are calling Fiset day to day with a groin pull. I seem to recall a couple of seasons ago, Mike Richter missing some time with a groin pull, coming back to soon, and injuring himself further (doing the splits), and missing significant time. Hope they are smart with Fiset and this groin doesn't become chronic. Now in the "CAN THE BASEBALL SEASON END ALREADY" Division, have two games tonight maybe, maybe not. Why? Because the world series is on and the owner of the rink is a Padres fan. So of course, this makes us all Padres fans (BOOOOOOOOOO). Twice in the last week we have had games rescheduled because the games are on. IT'S BEEN AROUND 20 YEARS. IT'S IN EVERY HOME. IT'S CALLED A VCR. USE IT!!!! Sorry.

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Oct 21, 8:23AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I've got a bit of news for that Padres fan. The World Series was over in the 3rd inning of game 1. Anyways, I've just nabbed tix 3rd row blue line seats for Wings / Leafs friday. Yeah for me !!! : >)

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 21, 8:25AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yes gb the extra space I think will favor some guys not others....the finesse Gretzky types I think might find it too much room and cannot escape marauding D....but the strength-type players like our Jagr I bet will love it, they can carry the D on their back anyway, now they don't have to worry as much about running into the side of the net.

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Oct 21, 9:26AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'm gonna keep an eye on Manny Legace's performance. He was with Springfield in the AHL for awhile, and he was really impressive. He probably was the second or 3rd best goalie behind Jean-Francois Labbe and maybe Norm Maracle. I hope he does well.

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Oct 21, 9:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)
BTW guys... you're gonna have to outduel me for that Hawks contract... I've been working day and night. I know at 23 I'm a little old for juniors, but...um...errr..I was redshirted for 2 years. Yeahhhh, that's the ticket! :o)

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 21, 9:58AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well my Weekly Shellack entry guys....12-2 last night, did not count exactly but somewhere over 50 saves. On the plus sidet he team doing the shellacking wants me to play for them next session. So should I dump my easily-demoralized teammates?

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 21, 9:59AM PST (-0700 GMT)
On the down side I kind of pulled a groin, guess that is going around amongst goalies! Here in Pgh Barrasso now on injured-reserve, his first injury of 98 only 3 games into the season. Of course he did play 2 games without getting hurt so I guess we should be grateful!

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Oct 21, 11:06AM PST (-0700 GMT)

Had a new experience last night..... Hard slapper from the point right along the ground... I angle my stick to direst the puck up and to the corner to make the save. I did not see one of their players to my right side... The puck smacks the dude right in the half shield then goes into the net.... I say to the guy hey this is hockey not soccer.... But he gets the goal... Total shock to the guy... After the game he made the comment to me that he needs to get a full face (Cracked his half shield).... Whoa! was subbing for a team and ended up in a 6-6 tie even though we were out skated by a huge margin in the second and third.... Almost lost it in the last 25 seconds with a two on none coming at me but the guy hits the post...

    Scoop: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 1:04AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey all..... long time no talk.... well the season is beginning to drag on already and I'm only 16 games into it. MAybe when I get my pads from Scott I will get a pysch boost and start taking this a little more serious. Looks like a bunch of new chatsters! The more the merrier.... more later

    Guardian: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 5:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi all. From the wastelands of central Iowa, Guardian returns. Haven't played yet this season, likely won't get a chance to. Grrrr. Legace did, well, OK last night. Stopped 49 of 50 shots in his NHL debut. Does that count as coming in with a bang? And let's hear it for my favorite little guy in the nets...5'6" Irbe off to a damn good start handling the work in Carolina.

    C5: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 5:47AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'll mention again that I saw Irbe play in the Canada Cup in Calgary whenhe was 16... traded T-shirts with him. I still have the shirt. He was anxious to get rid of it, I guess, since it said CCCP on it...

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 5:50AM PST (-0700 GMT)
    I always liked little Arty....

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 5:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Meanwhile with Barrasso out Pens go to Tampa with SKudra just off IR and raw rookie Auibin. Between them they stopped um 10 of Lightning's first 15 shots.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 5:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey that's smottsie numbers! Maybe I could suit up for the Pens....

Lecavlier looks awesome BTW....hope he doesn't get stifled in Tampa....

    C5: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 5:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
4qts... I totally know what you mean! Started last night's game with my A team with the worst luck I've ever had to start a game. A total of 6 goals were scored on me in the first 8 minutes, and all but one of them were good, solid goals. The last one I barely got over... my brain was too busy thinking, "What the hell?" to get over. By goal 4 I'd have been pulled by any coach, but not blamed for anything. We were playing a new team we'd never seen before, and man, were they something else. Not one player over 23 (and that's pushing it), and they weren't necessarily fast or anything, but they handled the puck SO well and worked the puck around beautifully. I got pissed off at the D, our captain railed on us and be hustled our way to a tie. From the 6th goal I let in nothing until the last five minutes of the game, where they got three, each on a breakaway or a 2 on 1. We could have beat them, but it was hard to change gears in the 1st to match them. Anyway, 4qts, they got a goal on me almost like yours... a shot wide went in off a guy's hands as he was trying to grab the puck and put it down...

    C5: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 5:57AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Irbe wears what, 38" pads? I saw a pair of his pads for sale on a Web site a while back and they're HUGE...

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 6:47AM PST (-0700 GMT)
hehe, 38" pads, and he's like 66" tall. Does he need a c/a or do the pads come up to his armpits? : >)

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 6:50AM PST (-0700 GMT)
morning all. Anyone see Dunham last night? Looked absolutely awesome through 2 periods. saved 39 of 40 through 2, ended up something like 52 of 57. Some unbelievable stops... He should've got first star.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 6:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Chatster's what's the general preference on pad size? My 32" Louisvilles are the smallest I've ever worn and they improved my mobility such that I stop more pucks while taking up less space.....

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 6:59AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Nope only watched Puppa stopping everything even the ones he didn't see. Oh well I guess Lightning due for a win.

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 7:20AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I've only ever worn 34". Seem to fit my 6'1 frame quite well. smott, do you have any experience in reshaping stick blades?

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 7:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
No stick blade experience, I like my Kohos the way they are....

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 7:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm I'm a tad over 5'8" and wore 34" VIcs for years they were the right size...then got 34" Kohos and they came up to my nose....now the 32" Butterflys are a little small...different brands are really different in the cut/size....

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 9:03AM PST (-0700 GMT)
yes, they are 34" Koho's. which makes them 32 ish for any other pad. anyway, i like the fit.

    Beatts: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 9:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'm 6'3" and I wear 34" pads. They seem to do the trick. They have the built in knee cradle though and I imagine I couldn't wear them if it wasn't there. Oh ya I forgot to tell you guys...This past sunday's game I had the goalie gods looking down on me (and laughing). Late in the game, I've got the goose-egg and here comes a two on nothing....Immediately I think #@$#, it gonna be pretty hard to stop this, The % isn't in my favour....Anyways, the puck-carrier is coming down on my left-side with his team-mate to his left the whole way. What can I do ?? You have to play the shooter but still be ready for the quick pass across.....Well I didn't have to worry, The shooter lets this blistering shot go...6-8 feet wide of the net...HAHA I started laughing out loud right at the guy..(He is a friend of mine) Then the both teams and the ref's start laughing. He then skates sheepishly ( and red-faced) to the bench. Take into account that when he let the shot go he was probably 4-5 feet in front of me...How he missed that much I'll never know...I keep the goose-egg, and when we were shaking hands after the game I gave him the puck...I was then "well blessed" hehe

    Beatts: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 9:48AM PST (-0700 GMT)
BTW C5, I still get your old link the the Picture page...I'm nowhere to be found !! It's no problem though, I've got to get some good pictures sent to you soon...

    C5: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 11:20AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Haha! Beatts, I'm glad I'm not the only goalie to post long-winded tales of our games. That was great. Hmm. Don't know where your pix went... I'll look into it.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 11:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Chatsters I may be bagging one of my teams (the easily-demoralized one) in favor of a better team same league, that shelled us 12-2 on Tues then asked me to sign up for next session.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 11:32AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Um, so any suggestions for how to let this sensitive group down gently? (A "dear John" letter of sorts I guess heh heh)

    Tripp: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 11:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I usually wear 32 1/2's in Vaughn pads, but my Bauer R6's are a 33. I'm about 6' tall. The other goalie on my last team was about the same height, and he wore a 34". I'd be falling on my face all day if my pads were that tall.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 11:39AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Heh heh I never needed tall pads to fall on my face....

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 11:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
smott, how long have you been playing with Team Sensitive? If they they are continually hanging you out to dry it shouldn't come as too big of a surprise to them. How about this: you could turn it around and say "Heck fellas, you guys didnt invite me back so I figured you didnt want me. Golly gee darn, I've already committed to another team." problemo solved. ; >)

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 12:08AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sieve I am hung out to dry so often I have clothes pegs stuck in my jersey. Really they are nice guys just out of their league, a couple of the D give me shame-faced remarks like "It ain't you that stinks, it's us!!" Why they keep signing up in this league which is pretty fast B, with some very good A guys sprinkled in, is beyond me....there are a couple of nice C leagues 10 mins away where they'd be competitive and win their share...but it costs 40$ more per man, so....

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 12:25AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Played with these guys starting kast fall....

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 2:31PM PST (-0700 GMT)
To shape stick blades all you need is a heat gun or a electric stove set to red hot. Place the blade of the stick about 6-8 inches above the burner, switching sides untill the fiberglass starts to become soft. Start your curve in the desired spot(heel, mid, toe) slowly so not as to seperate the fiberglass from the stick too quickly and continue to keep heating it as you mold the curve in. Go slow at first so you can get an idea of how fast the blade softens up and avoid a dripping fiberglass mess. Experiment on an old or cracked stick first(some chatsters I know keep such sticks set aside for other purposes >:-) ) to get an idea of how to do it and how much time you have to mold the blade, better to thrash an old/cracked stick than a new $50.00 piece of lumber.

    C5: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 2:48PM PST (-0700 GMT)
CdP, thanks for the tips! Will save THAT information. Speaking of sticks, chatsters, what is the brand of stick which has lasted you the longest? I like my Sherwood 970's, but methinks they're going out of style, soon...

    snowman: . . . . Thu, Oct 22, 7:59PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ive been using those Sherwood 970's. Durable stick. Ive used Louisville TPS and the shafts would break sometimes it seems just clearing the puck!!

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Oct 23, 5:30AM PST (-0700 GMT)
morning all. CdP, thanks for the stick tips. The stove sounds like the way to go. I was thinking propane torch but didnt want to burn the stick.

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Oct 23, 5:38AM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5, hmm, why do you think S-W 970's are on their way out? I just bought another 950 (instead of 970 because curve on 950 was greater). Prior to that I was using Christian CC, but I think the heel is too fragile on those sticks

    smott: . . . . Fri, Oct 23, 6:40AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I have been using the Koho Roy for years and love it. Most durable stick I ever had. How you guys haul around those Sherwoods I don't know. Oh, yeah, muscle mass! SOmething I lack!

    smott: . . . . Fri, Oct 23, 6:42AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Anyway the Kohos are reasonably light and last forever, usually give up in the heel area eventually, sometimes I pitch them because they just get to feeling real dead. DId snap the blade off one this year in warmup....also they make an Intermediate size (few brands do) which is good for me at 5'8" the seniors are a little too tall in the paddle for me and the blade wanders over to the glove side up on the heel....

    smott: . . . . Fri, Oct 23, 6:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
....my habit of saying Yes to fill-in requests is getting me in trouble...schedule this week: Sat C 11:30 PM Sun A fill in noon, Sun C fill-in 11 PM, Mon B fill-in 10 PM, Tues B 10:40. I have to find time for sleep/house stuff and oh yeah work in there....

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Oct 23, 7:14AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ugh, not to mention time for the body to heal itself... : >) Sher-Wood's heavy??? I have an old S-W 950 that is so light I have to hold it down from floating away. Even after repairing it 1K times. I call it Franken-stick.

    Tripp: . . . . Fri, Oct 23, 9:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I bought a dozen Heaton Helite IV sticks in the Byron Dafoe pattern. I love those sticks. The lie is just right for my stance, and there's only a wee little curve in the blade. I've had pretty good luck with them so far. I had a few Bauer R5's, but they started splitting in the heel every time. I also have an old Heaton 90z that refuses to die. My friends started calling it the "War Pig". Reminds me of an ex-girlfriend I once had

    : . . . . Fri, Oct 23, 9:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)

    C5: . . . . Fri, Oct 23, 11:08AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Oh, of course, that was me up there... A guy in the locker room last night was saying that if you took a 30-30 calibre bullet and instead of the bullet fire a puck, you'd have an decent velocity slapshot... In other words, instead of the bullet's gunpowder grains propelling a 35 gram bullet along would propel a 6 oz. puck... you'd get about 60-75 mph... An interesting thought/perspective, especially if you're a goalie...

    C5: . . . . Fri, Oct 23, 11:09AM PST (-0700 GMT)

Heaton helite IV 6100 model sticks rule! Light as hell, hold up well and are easy to modify blade wise. Just another note on the blade modifications. Understand that you can use various methods to induce the curve ie: vise, pliers ect. The way that works just as well for those who don't have a Bob Villa set up in the garage is the old under the door with a brick under the heel to hold it in place as it cools. This ensures the desired curve remains in place while the fiberglass cools. Kind of common sense stuff but I thought i'd throw it out just in case there was an doubt/confusion on how to put a curve in.

    Grass: . . . . Fri, Oct 23, 1:08PM PST (-0700 GMT)
CdP -- Your browsers may be the "gremlin"... To enhance performance, some browsers 'cache' pages so that frequently loaded pages are actually re-loaded from your hard drive vice the net. If you are running on a LAN, your proxy server is almost certainly setup to cache HTML. In either event, you can force a cache purge with the "View-Reload (Ctrl-R)" [or similar command]. Hope that get the Sievester to show up for you...

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 26, 5:32AM PST (-0700 GMT)
5-2 after 1 period, I'm wondering when was the last time I had 5 goals to work with in a whole game much less a period.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 26, 5:33AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Also I find I play much looser after I get oh say a 7 or 8 goal lead heh heh heh......

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 26, 5:33AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Also I think their other goalie must be pretty average to be .500 with these guys....

    C5: . . . . Mon, Oct 26, 6:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott, congrats, win must feel great! Played last night at 10... Ugh, that's 11 in body-time, what with the clock falling back... Played with that team I told you about. They were 0-4-1 going into the game, with me providing their previous tie... Now the team is 0-4-2, with me adding another tie, 2-2. I played very well, but I like being shelled. I also got lucky, collecting three posts in the game. When the shootout came I knew it was over... these guys have NEVER scored in a shootout. In the locker room afterwards everyone was saying how it would have been 8-2 with their old goalie... and the captain of the other team said, "If I'd remembered WE were playing you I wouldn't have given them your number!"

morning all. smott, I remember when I used to win games. been a while though. c5, ditto on the 10pm game last night. Late nights are easier than early mornings for me.

    Sieve: . . . . Mon, Oct 26, 7:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
took another one on the chin last night 9-2. I sucked out loud. 4 goals were in the super-cheese catagory. I think I'm afraid to go all out with knee being around 90%. ughh. I think my guys are starting to wonder about me... uh-oh...

    fourqts: . . . . Mon, Oct 26, 8:06AM PST (-0700 GMT)
have fun with the win smots, as for my league.... Got rained out last night... One bad thing about Arizona is you find out maybe 3 times a year if your roof leaks.... Had a great open hockey outing on Friday night... Was stoning people left and right (With the typical open hockey lack of any form of defense). Should be getting a delivery from Scott this week sometime. Then I'll at least look like a "good" goalie

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 26, 9:26AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Snapped the blade off another Koho this weekend (in my 11:30 PM Saturday night zero-social-life game). Down to my last one, ordered 3 more from SfS....icky BLACK RRRrrr

    Beatts: . . . . Mon, Oct 26, 9:42AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I've got the holy-grail of Horseshoes up my butt folks.. Played in that Puck and Ball Tournament I was telling you about earlier..Three games of Hockey, Three Goose-eggs !! Then just to top it off last night I got another in our league game..Four in a row..I'd like to take this time to thank my goal posts for about ten saves they made over the week-end!! It's amazing when your having a decent game how lucky you get...And to Top it off my Leafs are tied for number 1 in the league !!! Apologies to Smott and her Penguins !! Don't worry smott, They play tonight in T.O. Time for revenge ???

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 26, 10:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
CONGRATS Beatts that must be the Chatster record for donuts!!! I'm all happy 'cause I got my first one in months last week!....Meanwhile I am amazed you even survived that weekend...Oh for Lost Youth...

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 26, 10:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for my fave Flightless FOwl....with Barrasso out on IR and Skudra just off it with no training camp or prep, well they've allowed 11 goals last 2 games. YUCK! I would've stopped a couple poor Skudra let in, really icky....once again Kevin Hatcher responsible for a couple of goals on turnovers, geez I can't stand that guy....

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 26, 10:48AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Tommy B back in goal tonight I sure hope the results are different....apologies to Leafs fans. THough the Leafs appear to be transformed this year, so much more aggressive, did they get an infusion of young legs or what?....

    Grass: . . . . Mon, Oct 26, 11:41AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Howdy chatsters -- funny thing happened during a fill-in game last night. A dump in from the point that I corral and hand off to the left D. He attempts to clear and sends a tape-to-tape pass to the right winger. Only problem: it was the RW for the wrong team. Thinking quickly, the winger tries the dump in again, which the D skillfully deflects into the net.

    Grass: . . . . Mon, Oct 26, 11:42AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Now the D is all hacked off at me! All because I asked if he can tally both the assist and the goal...

Geez Beatts... bagel city. That's some kind of zone you're in. Keep it up! I had the exact opposite luck at open hockey on Saturday. This guy had all day to tee it up on me from right between the circles and let go a rocket. It went off my blocker, off the crossbar, off my butt and trickled in. Maybe you can bless my sticks or something. Couldn't hurt.

    Sieve: . . . . Mon, Oct 26, 1:57PM PST (-0700 GMT)

I don't think ROY is going to make the banner anytime soon this year..... My Yotes filled the net with five tonight. Roy was hitting the deck really early the whole game. Anyhow my Yotes are looking pretty good so far this season.... Except for letting the Ducks come back and Tie with two goals in the third last night....

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 5:43AM PST (-0700 GMT)
My Birds bounce back with a 2-0 win v Leafs...Tommy B sitll sore, Skudra getst he unecpected start and after swiss cheesing it the last 2 games he throws a cheerio at Toronto. So go figure. Mats Sundin is awesome BTW. And I guess Cujo has bagged Louisville for Bauer? Geez are me & Toastie the only ones in Louisville anymore?

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 5:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Barrasso also now in Bauer gloves, bagging Heaton. Still has those ugly boxy no-name pads though.....

    Goal35: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 8:15AM PST (-0700 GMT)
howdy all.. congrats to all it seems for a great goalie-gods weekend!! had a good one myself, a 8-4 win Sat, and a stand on my head 6-1 win over the defending league champs Sun... 38 saves plus 3 posts :) am getting anxious, my blocker from Scott should be here this week hopefully... sections of palm and thumb almost gone in the old Cooper..

    Goal35: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 8:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Toast - how hard is it to get tix for Leaf games? I'd really like to get up there for a game in the Garden before they move...

    C5: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 8:30AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I had my blocker re-palmed. I like my blocker a lot, although I don't know how to use it (I suck short side, at least, I think so). Cost me $75, though, but it's still a good blocker. It's a Forrester, no brand you'd ever heard of. I've seen a lot of blockers, though-- TPS, Brians, Koho, etc.--, and I don't think there's really a 'kick ass' blocker like there are gloves and pads...

    C5: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 8:32AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...although, the McM I saw (gawd awful materials and workmanship, I thought) had a super-cool, warpy curve designed to handle rebounds well. I don't know if I'd buy one, though, as I use my blocker to stuff wraparounds and handle stuff in the crease much more than I do to redirect rebounds. Plus, a goalie should never become dependent on a particular type of equipment like that.

    C5: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 8:32AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hm. Now I know why it's hard to generate conversations sometimes. I have both sides of the conversation. :-D

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 8:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5 sorry I missed you....never been a fan of the curvy-swervy blocker....from all the tennis I play I prefer a very flat surface to direct shots not unlike the strings on a racquet....of course, I suck with the blocker anyway! Hey maybe that explains my tennis results too!......

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 8:52AM PST (-0700 GMT)
So, are the Leafs a fluke?

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 8:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
And is Pat Quinn actually preaching speed & aggressiveness and offense, over the dinky boring trap &/or dump tactics?

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 8:54AM PST (-0700 GMT)
If so, can we give him some sort of award for courage???

    Beatts: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 9:48AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Congrats Smott, Your Birds raked some "leafs" last night. Nice saves by both goalies, Leaf players looked flat, I don't think the leafs are a fluke...But there is no way I think they can keep it up. I believe they will be a bit better than .500 this year, They'll make the play-offs and possibly win a round. I can't get my expectation up that much though, I 'm a long suffering fan....I think one of the reasons for this year's resurgence is Coach Quinn. He's a pretty tough sonofabitch who wont put up with any crap. They just needed some new blood behind the bench. The player's loved Murphy last year because he was a considerbly "easy" coach. Not Going to happen this year. Expect the train to run off the tracks some time this year, BUT they will so pretty well this year...Oh ya, to get Leaf tickets you either go to the scalpers or you know somebody who has season's tickets. You can get the odd ticket from Ticketmaster but they are usually Standing room only-Obstructed view. I've got Four tickets for Jan 4 against Tampa Bay. Reds...$95 EACH They were $75 last year...Golds are $125 I think...CRAZYNESS...

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 11:26AM PST (-0700 GMT)

    gbfreeman: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 12:32AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well, the Blackhawks are off to a much better start this year than last. 4-2-1 after 7 games vice no wins in their first 7 last year. Came back from 2 down to Nashville (I know, expansion team) to win 5-4. Just waiting for the bubble to burst. On a personal note, moved into the new condo yesterday and was really tired when I strapped them on last night. Must have rubbed off on the rest of the team. We got outshot 22-4 (roller). We lost 3-0. Frustrating. On the light-hearted side, team captain starts off the game with a pep talk about avoiding penalties (especially retalliation penalties). Two minutes into the game he gets called for high sticking. 5 minutes after serving his penalty he gets called for holding. With 10 minutes left in the game he gets 2 for roughing (you guessed it, retalliation!). I love playing for this team (no sarcasm). Of the three goals I gave up I really only felt bad about one. Didn't extend far enough on a stretching glove save and had it go off the end of my glove. The other two were deflections by my defense that were really a product of them being new to hockey. The first was kicked in by D trying to stop the puck off a face off with his skate :P The second deflection was maddening. Got a bead on the puck coming at me and my D tries to stop the puck with his stick. Prettiest blocker side high deflection you ever will see. The team I play for in Poway, CA finished the season undefeated 7-0-3 (I couldn't play the last game due to moving). #1 seed in the playoffs. 5 games in the next 2 nights. I gotta get some rest before I die.

    C5: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 12:59AM PST (-0700 GMT)
GB, for some reason your post reminded me of my last game... 2-2 tie... Both goals were good goals, just stand up, dig puck out, and reset the meter, you know? Final goal on deflection in front, not an accident. But I'm thinking: Is there a way to improve the way we handle deflections? I've changed my style slightly on shots through the crowd and it has worked wonders, but in a subtle way. When a puck somes in, instead of making a precise save (like with a glove or a stick) I get as much of myself in front of it and watch the puck in, waiting for it to hit me. I've noticed that when I do this a lot of deflections that only move 8 inches (a goal on a glove save) hit my knee or shoulder instead of my stomach, you follow? Interesting... I stop deflections a litttttle bit more than I used to when I do that... anyone else noticed this?

    C5: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 1:00PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I guess I'm wondering this: You goalies that have been to camps, etc., what do they teach you about handling shots in front, where chance of deflection is high?

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 1:03PM PST (-0700 GMT)
gb - join the Just Moved In Club! Gee it is tiring huh? 4 games/4 nights for moi, really will be dragging tomorrow when it's time to put up my new curtains which just arrived....however should be recovered by Staurday, in time to install ceramic tile in the kitchen...then 4 games 5 nights again, starting Saturday!

    : . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 1:04PM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5 - i've seen Forrester gear before, a goalie for the Admirals was using it a few years ago, yea, thought about replaming it, but Battram's prices looked soooooo good.

    Goal35: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 1:04PM PST (-0700 GMT)
    oooops, that was me

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 1:05PM PST (-0700 GMT)

hiya smott, how's the new abode?

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 1:07PM PST (-0700 GMT)
But anyway I was taught to get as close to the deflector as possible. As for likely high deflections, well good luck. Keep your hands up is the best I can offer. But in general if it's tipped in the goalie is not the culprit!

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 1:08PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey G35 new house is wearing me down! No time to go to the gym and stay in shape. I am now down to 127 lbs which is a tad light for men's hockey I think. What to do??

Dragged 30 miles out of town last night to fill in for a team I don't even know, turns out they are D-league, other team doesn't show, now they want to play a pickup game. For this I miss sleep?

    Goal35: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 1:13PM PST (-0700 GMT)

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 1:15PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hah no way better than the gym! SHoulda seen me with that leaf blower 2 hrs on SUnday....hurt my elbow, shoulder, back...now I gott aget up on the ladder and blow out the gutters! Arrgh...

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 1:18PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Good for you....these guys were really sad, I did stick around 45 mins ior so, but geez.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 1:26PM PST (-0700 GMT)
BTW any of you Chatsters want to help me install a kitchen countertop? Just checking.

    C5: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 2:24PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott, that's what I thought-- get as close as possible. Did that during my AA game and this is what happens: Shot from the point towards guy in front, I rush the guy, I'm blocking the save (high, on knees, stick in front) and he mishandles the deflection, it goes off the back of his knee, hits the post, and one of their late-arrivals shovels it in. UGH!!! We won 7-2, though, and I didn't mention this, but it was against a team of an ex-friend (he stopped being pals with me because I wasn't Jewish, of all things). Made two saves on him, and he shot three wide, missed two breakaways wide, and was tossed from the game in the third. Ooops...

    Tripp: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 4:50PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I've been taught the same thing as smott. I guess the standard thing is to get your body right behind the deflector's stick and cut down the distance. Sometimes when I'm screened or there's someone trying to deflect the shot, I put my skate blades against the posts with my stick across the ice. It basically eliminates the bottom 2/3 of the net. It can't look too pretty (or comfortable) but as long as you can get your feet back under ya, it seems to work pretty well.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 7:11PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sabres Rangers 0-0 final. Sure is a good thing that they changed the rules to increase scoring!

    Tripp: . . . . Tue, Oct 27, 7:18PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Unless they start using soccer nets, Hasek and Richter are still gonna stop a whole lotta pucks. But scoring does seem to be down. Guess the red line is the next thing to go.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 5:41AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Don't forget the 1-0 score-fest Isles v LA. That Manny Legace sure looks good, except for the 60-ft gamewinner....is he a rookie?

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 5:42AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm Tripp I am rarely that far backin the net that my pads would be on hte posts (even if I had that kind felixibility!)in fact on longer defelct-able shots I am typically beyond the top of the crease.

    Goal35: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 5:59AM PST (-0700 GMT)
smott - Legace has been playing in the IHL for the past few years, have seen him a few times - is pretty solid

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 6:14AM PST (-0700 GMT)
ONe little trick I've learned...get your stick in the skates of the deflector and throw him off balance as the shot is about to come, he often misses the tip and also cannot protect himself if he's going to get hit. This makes him a little less likely to mix it up next time!

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 6:15AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Or more likely to take a swing at you! Heh heh....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 6:15AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yah Legace looked solid plus really athletic. And on that long goal, he looked just like me!

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 10:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Two years ago when the Hershey Bears won the Calder Cup in the AHL, they had to play against Legace's team. He was awesome. His GAA was something like 1.10. He had Hershey in a 3 games to 1 hole. After losing that 1 game in OT, he went postal and hit the ref with his stick and got suspended for 10 games. Then Sylvain Daigle had to take over in goal and Hershey took the series in 7. That long goal that he gave up looked like a David Cone slider. That had all kinds of junk on it. Too bad once Storr and Fiset get healthy, Legace will probably get shipped back to the I.

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 10:26AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I've always played a little bit too deep in my net, smott. Coaches have tried to break me of that habit since I was a pup. I'm a good foot out of the crease when the puck's at the point. But when it's in tight, l tend to back up too far and just try to take away the low net. Bad habit, I know... but we can't all be Beatts and pitch 4 straight zero's :o)

    gbfreeman: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 11:22AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott, this was in an article on ESPN Sportszone regarding the Penguins. Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. has opened a criminal investigation into whether the team defrauded the city by collecting a 5 percent amusement tax on all tickets sold, then keeping the money without turning it over to the city. In the same article one of the members of the city council was quoted as saying that the Penguins should be evicted from the Civic Arena for failure to pay back taxes. Not the most conducive atmosphere to play hockey in is it?

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 1:04PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ah yes gb this is the mayor's attempt to strike back at Marino for shopping around other cities for arenas. Lots of bad blood now between the city and the Pens mgmt, though HOward Baldwin, still co-owner and the architect of most of the bad deals, remains pretty Teflon and still well-liked.

    wolfman: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 1:06PM PST (-0700 GMT)
    Hi smott

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 1:06PM PST (-0700 GMT)
On theother hand, hepretty much had to spend truckloads of $$ in teh early 90's to keep the team together when they looked like they had Dynasty-potential...but stuff happened...Kevin Stevens broke his face and was never the same (Pens still paying him BTW, how's that for business savvy?) Mario got cancer, the team decided Bowman couldn't coach...and they pretty much have wound up exactly where you'd expect!

    smott: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 1:07PM PST (-0700 GMT)

    ScottBattram: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 6:28PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Wow.. finally some time on the computer.. been working long hours... plus the team I am working as an equipment manager for is eating up all my free time! Jeff Reese is still playing.. just not in the big leagues, he has apparently signed with the LONDON ADMIRALS, a team in our SNR A loop, the team I am with is the OXFORD BLUES, and we are 9 - 0 so far.. Beating London twice, although Reese hasnt played against us... former PRO goalie JIM SIDWELL played against us.. and we made him look bad.. I cant believe that he actually played PRO... looked terrible... we are in the process of signing former IHL and NHL goaltender Steve McKichan, in order to put us in better position to win the Allen Cup, if we can ink Steve, we should have a good shot. Another former PRO goalie in the AHL and IHL as well as some action in the NHL (Chris Pusey) is playing for us as well.. only as a Defenceman! saw his Calder Cup Ring last week (AHL rings) man.. pretty darn nice.. said it was worth about $1500.00 back in 1985 when he won it with the Adirondack Red Wings! Glad to be back.. and your orders are comming guys!

G-35, info about tix is pretty accurate. tough to get Leaf tickets, have to know someone or go scalper route. Am going to the Leaf/Sabre game in Buffalo this Friday myself...

As for hockey, only playing 2 or 3 times a week myself and have not been sharp to start the season at all. Timing all off, it has been a struggle. Last couple games better - but not playing close to usual level. Then again, this is a major reduction in teams for me, maybe I have not yet adjusted.

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Oct 28, 9:08PM PST (-0700 GMT)

I see my Pens rough up old goalie Wregget in Calgary last night. 5-2 win on um 20 shots. Jagr turning into an assistman, that is a big surprise, 14 pts so far and I think only 2-3 of them are goals.....top of the NHL maybe? Not sure....Sundin up there too, plus some old guy named Messier....

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 5:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Poor Kenny W losign a bunch as a FLame, but they seem to love him, 2-5 and been game star like 4 times already.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 6:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well, it happened. LA Kings were in such a hurry to bring Stephan Fiset back from a right groin pull (Even though Manny Legace has been very solid). During the game last night guess what, Fiset pulled his left groin. I once again am reminded of the problems Richter had a couple of years ago with his lower body because he came back too soon. On a personal note 3 games last night, 1-0-2. Tied 3-3 with only 4 skaters (Roller) on a score off a HUGE rebound in front of the other teams net. Second game was a 4-0 win. 3rd game was a 4-4 tie (two goals scored off of scrums at the top of the crease. Boy I am beat. Took some of the advice about deflections into acount and they worked. In the shutout I had to face 18 shots and 3 of them were of the deflection type. Team I won with last night is 3-0 and getting better. Sad part is I am just filling in for them for the next two weeks. Regular goalie has been working evenings so I took the first 5 weeks for him. Bummer.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 7:08AM PST (-0700 GMT)
gb you are amazing playing 3 games in a row! I'd need a stretcher to get home....

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 7:17AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yah Richter was out for months wasn't he? Groins so nasty take forever to heal....BTW Barrasso still out w/groin that is 2 weeks now. Never seen a guy injured so much or lose so much time to muscle strain.

    C5: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 7:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott, well, I've gone on record here in this chat many times to say that I like Wregget. The star goalies are obvious choices but goalies playing on the fringes, like Rhodes, Tabby, Kidd or Irbe are sort of "ya like 'em or ya don't" kinds of goalies. Oh. And of that list, I'd pick only Tabby and Irbe. Love Tabby.

    C5: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 7:39AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Wow... Bruins crushed the Habs 9-2... when was the last time you saw that?? Maybe the teams are tuning in to the ice changes?

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:22AM PST (-0700 GMT)
eeek yes thought that 9 was a mis-print!

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:23AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I guess Theo and TBo got lit up! ON the whole, though I think the players will take advantage of the new rules eventually and score more, the trend overall will continue to be less goals.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:24AM PST (-0700 GMT)
There's just fewer and fewer skilled players out there, and as long as the league thinks expansion is so wonderful, the game will continue to get more boring.

    Toast: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:26AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smottsie - Tommy B reinjured himself in warmup against T.O. on Monday...

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:26AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Oh, and welcome to the Nashville Predators, BTW....

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:26AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hiya Toastie - yes so I heard, in the warmup he somehow made it worse and decided he couldn't go. DId you see it?

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:27AM PST (-0700 GMT)
And I believe the result wast hat backup Skudra was quite realxed, not expecting to play, and did much better, though the Leafs looked off their feed from what I saw.

    Toast: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:28AM PST (-0700 GMT)
No. I just heard he had the start, then Skudra was in with no backup.

    Toast: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Leafs had no jump. And personally, I am waiting for the NHL to implode somewhat after the next round of expansion.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:30AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yes Pens dragged up Aubin for the trip Wets, who proceeded to get hurt in warmup yesterday....guess they could have Constantine suit up heh heh....

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well with 0-0, 1-0, 2-1 scores everywhere I think implosion is already starting.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)
OK who's the Canuck's goalie up on teh banner?

    Toast: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:32AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Geez, what is it with the goalies going down so far this year. Lovely to see Kidd stinking the joint out...maybe normal equipment wasn't his cup of tea. Irbe has been solid. Ranford gets hurt last night, I didn't see it - but a stick got him in the face?

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:32AM PST (-0700 GMT)
And as skill drops, salaries have gone up 700% I think since 1992....

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Always liked Arty....is Trevor going to turn out to be The Can't Miss Kidd who Missed? What happened to Ranford - not a stick through the bars I hope....

    Toast: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Oh nice. Blame it on TV contracts...the old days when you had to put fannies in the seats forced a decent product. Now, with guaranteed TV deals - the game doesn't have to be that interesting.

    Toast: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Not sure if it is - it might be, always a chance with the Cat's Eye.

    Toast: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:37AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Okay - gotta run. Off to work. Nice seeing you again...

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:41AM PST (-0700 GMT)
    Later T...

    C5: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:50AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Canuck goalie on the banner? (??) Left to right, dafoe, hebert, snow, and of course, Hasek. Yeah, I'm going to go with the satellite TV this year, but the NHL is suffering, no doubt.

    Grass: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5 -- Have you chosen the satellite receiver yet? I'm leaning towards getting the dish, but haven't done any research yet...

Oh hmm isn't that a Canuck jersey?....Didn't recognize Snow....

    Beatts: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 9:47AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Tripp, My four game Goose-egg streak is Totally because of that huge Horse-shoe lodged in my colon !! I've literally had 10 or so pucks clank off Posts, toes, My head, you name it. One thing about being on a streak...I really seem to be seeing the puck well ( Thanks to the "D" for clearing the way) Is funny how superstitious I am, I'm practically a mental case doing the EXACT SAME THING, in the EXACT SAME ORDER....My wife is ready to commit me !!!

    Tripp: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 10:02AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Paul Kariya's stick blade (yes, blade!) got between the bars on Ranfor'd mask and got him in the face. I took a butt end like that once on a really freakish play, but never a blade. That's damn scary

    Tripp: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 10:05AM PST (-0700 GMT)
BTW...my Oilers wrecked big Olie and Tabby last night. Billy Guerin passed Shanahan for the league lead in goals. But Dougie Weight took a hit from Tinordi and tore up his knee. Could be out for the season! Betcha Slats is glad he dished out $8 mil for Weight last week, eh?

    Tripp: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 10:09AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey Beatts... I don't care if I had to sleep nude upside-down in an oxygen tent (please chatsters...don't try to picture that. It's for your own good) to get 4 shutouts! Whatever you've been doing, just keep going with it. Just enjoy the zone while you're there.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 10:21AM PST (-0700 GMT)
..not even going to go there

    Toast: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 11:30AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Oh...I have been skipping the upside down part...that has been my problem...

    C5: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 11:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
The air must be very, very thin where you guys live...

    gbfreeman: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 12:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Beatts, we are by nature superstitious beasts. Ever watch Patrick Roy skate onto the ice? He will not skate over any lines on the ice. I follow the same routine every game. Leave the house 1 hour before game time, listen to the same music, drive the same route to the gas station by the rink, fill up the car, and buy a sports drink. When I get to the rink, I wait until the start of the last period of the game in progress to get dressed (dressing the same way each time), wait until 1:30 is left in the game, put on my helmet and get ready for warmups. One of my friends will not talk to anyone from 1 hour prior to the game until the puck is dropped. He also will not let anyone so much as touch his equipment. It all comes down to being comfortable and when you have a routine (superstition) you can feel a little more in control.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 12:48AM PST (-0700 GMT)
smott, Snow went to Vancouver in the Sean Burke deal last season. He played in the world championships this year. He followed a new workout routine this offseason and appears to be playing much better.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 1:11PM PST (-0700 GMT)
...and I see Burke/McLEan tandem in FLorida not working out too well....

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 1:13PM PST (-0700 GMT)
...hmmm used to be very superstitious back in college....now not really but I always do right skate first, right pad etc......

If you guys have questions on Satellits.. I have both the big dish and a small USA 18" dish....

    fourqts: . . . . Thu, Oct 29, 8:15PM PST (-0700 GMT)
as for dish make sure you get one that will let you receive internet stuff (supposed to be faster than cable modem..... WEEEEEE no waiting for pages at all... And the Boolin Wall is still lookin sharp... He was huge against the sharks... Gave up one rocket up top, and was mashed into the back of the net by ricci then Granato taps in the rebound...... Last I heard, it was not a goal if there was someone in the crease ahead of the shot.... Well ricci was in the back of the net as well (guess hat is not part of the crease).... Ref Said he was pushed in.... Had to see it.... Scott you entertaining us on the chat chan is more important that being an equipment manager!!!!!

    Beatts: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 7:13AM PST (-0700 GMT)
The streak is over !! Got lit up for Seven Goals!! Count'em Seven !! We won 8-7 though so I don't mind...In a way I'm kind of glad that its over, I was thinking too much about it, to the point my stomach wasn't feeling too well. I played not too bad last night, made some big stops but the goals I let in were CRAP..Kind of frustrating to make key saves one minute then let in a flubber the next...

    smott: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 7:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...yes we all know the feeling....snag the bullet, whiff on the grounder...

    Vile: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 7:35AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I was stuck for costume so I brought in my gear and suited up. It was quite educational for everyone, and I came in second place. The head of purchasing spent an hour this morning getting made up as a klingon. But I figure second place for just putting on my goalie gear isn't bad.

    smott: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 7:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
heh heh did you wash it first?

    C5: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 8:20AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott, that's the reason I'm not going as a goalie... I'm tying a foil car sun visor to my back and going as a mutant instead... at least not an offensive, smelly mutant, anyway...

    smott: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 9:43AM PST (-0700 GMT)
For those of you have don't have a social life...I have a game this Sat at 10:10 PM....gee z wonder how many guys will show up...

    Goal35: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 11:08AM PST (-0700 GMT)

    smott: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 11:43AM PST (-0700 GMT)
No but I recall somebody on the Chat saying it was pretty good....if it can make my gloves a little more acceptable I'll try it....

    C5: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 11:49AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well, I have two games in a row Sunday afternoon, one at 4 and one at 6... filling in both times. You guys noticing an inordinate amount of injuries, off time in your leagues? I played every night this week, but not tonight or tomorrow nite... the social life does supercede hockey sometimes...

    fourqts: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 12:03AM PST (-0700 GMT)
fabreeze works pretty well but will not totally get out horrid smells.... I've had alot of luck just taking the time to clean up my equipment whenever i ues it.... I wipe it all down with a damp rag right when i get home then use lysol every time.... Bout once a month i give it the fabreeze stuff.... The only piece i have problems with is my blocker.... and of course my skates (Feets Stink)... With the amounts of money we spend on equipment, I figure putting off my shower for the 15 min it takes to take care of it right are well spent

    smott: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 12:08AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yah I wipe stuff down too but the gloves are pretty nasty, never really got used to wearing little batting gloves inside my gloves to keep them from getting too wet....I'm sure that helps a lot....but I drop enough pucks to begin with, can't afford to lose any feel....

    Goal35: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 1:39PM PST (-0700 GMT)
haven't tried the Febreeze yet, but the girl that was demoing it a K-mart assured me it would work.... hehehe, my wife thought it might be a challenge.

    Goal35: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 1:41PM PST (-0700 GMT)
guess i should try something soon, she has to keep informing people what the smell is in the garage when they come over.... smell? what smell?

    Tripp: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 2:05PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I used to wear those Neumann football gloves with the tackified palm and fingers, but only under my catch glove. It got kinda ratty after awhile, and no matter how much I washed it, it was just really unpleasant. So I chucked em after about a year. Now I got a pair of Nike batting gloves without the sticky surface. My trapper and blocker still smell okay. Well worth the $30-40 for the batting gloves.

    C5: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 2:20PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Kids, a girl I knew recommended a lotion called "Pretty Hands & Feet." Part of the smell is generated thanks to dead skin... This stuff has HCL in it and when you use it (just like lotion) on your hands & feet it takes off the dead skin. My hands & feet are more sensitive and I don't have trouble with gloves, blockers & skates. Try this stuff.

    C5: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 2:30PM PST (-0700 GMT)

woo Woo, Turek starts tonight... I really like Turek, I am amazed by his positional play as he plays primarily upright. He just stands solid regardless of who or how amny are coming at him. Should be a great game, Modano, Hull vs. Selane, Kariya

    Vile: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 3:11PM PST (-0700 GMT)
    er how many

    Vile: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 3:13PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I expect Turek will be a starter next year... maybe for Atlanta. He's just signed a one year contract, and I don't know if that means he wants to shop around next year, or wants to hide as a free agent from the expansion draft.

smott, it could get ugly. Here is the latest from the AP: PITTSBURGH -- A judge approved an emergency loan from Pittsburgh Penguins co-owner Roger Marino to the team so it could pay its players. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Bernard Markovitz approved the $2.5 million loan so players could be paid on Friday. It will be repaid to Marino at 8 percent interest. Marino earlier had loaned the team another $2.5 million and will be repaid before other creditors. Markovitz said at a hearing Thursday loans such as Marino's are standard practice for an organization that is reorganizing under the federal bankruptcy laws. The latest loan should last two weeks, said Robert G. Sable, an attorney for Marino and co-owner Howard Baldwin. The team owes $137.5 million to creditors including former All-Star center Mario Lemieux. Sable said the team needs a long-term loan of $20 million to cover operating losses this season. The team also owes the city nearly $1 million in delinquent amusement taxes on the Civic Arena. Pittsburgh City Councilman Jim Ferlo proposed last week that the city lock up the arena until the debt is repaid. The council is slated to vote on the proposal on Tuesday. Does this increase the chances that the NHL will step in and take over the franchise. Also, if Marino really cares about the team, why is he charging interest?

    Vile: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 3:17PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I think there are federal regulations involved.

    Vile: . . . . Fri, Oct 30, 9:01PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well, I talked smack about Turek, and he ended up with a tie. I have seen him do this a couple of times, where he seems to fade in the later periods. A lot of it can be blamed on the defense in front of him, but you have to give credit to the Selane/Kariya line... Oh well at least they managed the tie and not totally blow it.

anyone in phoenix want to play for a b-roller team on monday nights???? Conflicts with my work schedule over the next two months will force me out of at lease 6 games... And I'll have to agree with tripp on the batting gloves they do make a huge difference... But I, personally, Chose a manufacturer that is a little more hockey friendly (Louisville) than the NIKESKI.

    Tripp: . . . . Sat, Oct 31, 4:26PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Too late for me, fourqts. I've already gone to the dark side. I own a pair of Bauer pads. I figured since I've already gone astray, the Nike batting gloves couldn't do much more harm.

    fourqts: . . . . Sat, Oct 31, 9:57PM PST (-0700 GMT)
tripp was going to the dark side.... Had a friend going to canada to get me a set of good bauer's.... but was swayed by the talk in the room and by mr Battaram himself and decided to take a chance on the Scott Pads (Plus the little add ons for roller helped). But with Scott bowing out of the chat lately.... Been getting a little worried about my decision. Wondering if Yoda was right.... I guess i'll see later this week (Pads should be getting here.

    Tripp: . . . . Sun, Nov 1, 11:49AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I like the Bauer's, but they've been collecting dust ever since I got the Vaughn 4000's. I really like them. They're nice and light, and they broke in well for me. By the way, smott... saw Aubin in goal last night for the Pens. He makes Arturs Irbe look like a stickhandling wiz. Two yucky goals that were caused by sloppy puck control.

    ScottBattram: . . . . Sun, Nov 1, 4:33PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Dont worry fourqts, I am still around, but this is a super busy time of the year, therefor I dont get on as much! Just ask any of our products owners here on the chat, and they will tell you the wait is well worth it for getting BATTRAM products... you will see it for yourself and you will be glad you didnt have your buddy get you the Bauers! OVERPRICED average goal pad is about it...

Tripp, you must have been one hell of a goalie because you are one strange fella. oxygen tent? one glove?

    fourqts: . . . . Sun, Nov 1, 10:06PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Scott, Just gotta give you some S**t for not being on as much, and as for busy seasons, I'll be hitting mine in two weeks..... Then I start my 10 week run with five of the 10 weeks out of town. Year end and tax season suck being an accountant. And to make matters worse, I'm sitting for the CPA Exam this Thurs and Fri. Been studying regularly for three months and intensly for the past two weeks. Fun Fun Fun

    fourqts: . . . . Sun, Nov 1, 10:11PM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for my hockey career I let in three through the five hole tonight (Scott I need those five holeless pads i ordered) that i should have saved. Then had 3 more off of odd man rushed (1 on a 2 on 0, 2 on 3 on 1's) but managed to pull out the win 7-6.... One of our best players was in a car wreck this week (punctured a lung) and is out for the season..... So I better suck it up and not expect so much offense. Those pads I ordered are five holeless right scott?

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 5:27AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Arrrggh lost my A-league fill in yesterday 5-4 on a goal with 1:11 left......long pass corss ice to a wide open guy. I got over more or less in time but off the inside of my knee and 5-hole.....

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 5:28AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Once you have to go laterally that far it seems there is always space along the ice....sometimes I wonder if I'd be better off just diving nose-first paddle-down....nto exactly by the book but I'd rather make'em roof it....

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 5:33AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yes Aubin not exactly a meistro back there is he? Pens goalies going down to injuries left & right, Barrasso still out with the groin, now Skudra has a bruised shoulder....I believe Tommy B. back on Tuesday v Philly.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 5:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)

man, felt like i was in costume in our game Sat nite, we only had 6 guys show.. our 3rd line and one D... team we played had a full bench, prob the best B team we've played, cycled the puck as good as any A team i've seen. and with only one D you guessed it, backside open all nite, plus it seemed every rush was 2/3 on 1... got our asses whupped 9-4, outshot 55-23.... my GAA this year is going to hell in a handbasket....

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 8:12AM PST (-0700 GMT)
My GAA is all over the place....after absorbing a 13-3 spanking 1st game of the season in C, I have allowed 4 goals last 4 games...go figure....

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 8:13AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Also I remembered in A yesterday, how hard it is to play stop-time with only 2 subs on the bench....we were whipped by the end of the 2nd, but could not let the clock run out w/icings and such which works so well in running-time games....they score 2 in the last 55 secs of the 2nd period, we had no legs to stay w/fast breaks....oh well.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 8:14AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Seem to give up so many early/late goals or maybe they just bug me the most...if I could elim, inate the first & last minutes of any given period my GAA would disappear....

    Grass: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 8:43AM PST (-0700 GMT)
ms. smott -- Perhaps you will have better luck with the nose-diving save, but for me it takes too long to get this honker to drop six feet. If I could just get my hips to hit the ice before the puck hits the back of the net on those slides, I'd be a happy dude!

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 8:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Heh heh...well I was taught stay upright going laterally if possible and that's what I did....but when you take those couple big pushes, ice opens up....so oh well...

Had a good game Thursday... close at 3-2 with less than a minute to go. El Capitan yanks me for the extra skater and a centering pass skips over the center's stick and glides smoothly into my empty net. Oh well, out I go for the last 36 seconds. Of the face-off their wing skates by my D (now standing still wondering why the game is still being played since we have obviously lost!) and comes to the net with speed. I make the big sprawl and he DROPS it to the trailer who (unmolested by my D) buries it into the open net. 5-2 loss!!

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 8:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Nice to see them keep skating to the end.

    Beatts: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 9:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
hehe, My new streak begins !! We won 11-0 last night. Only had 9 shots on net ( 2 breakaway's) A real easy and BORING night. Jeez it's nice having a great defensive team in front of me, they're making me look good. We play a big game tonight against the team we beat 8-7 last thursday...Different team where the "D" isn't quite as tight.

    Tripp: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 10:35AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Played a little open hockey last night. I was feeling okay. The shoulder was still in one piece, which is a feat in itself. This guy comes in on a breakaway with his head down the whole way. So I'm thinking easy poke check. But when he was about 10 feet away, he winds up and lets go a slapshot! I went down to the butterfly and took it right off the forearm above the trapper. He said he had no idea how close he was to me. I wish he'd tell that to the king-size welt on my arm! Oww

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 10:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Small world....got screened yesterday on a bad angle, wrapped my glove arm around the post to shut down any space. Big mistake, guy whistles one off my elbow above the glove, with my arm turned funny it hit outside the extra padding on the R5....OWWWWW....had to apply a bottle of cold Bud to the welt after the game heh heh heh.....

    Toast: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 11:25AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm...the smellies. As for me, have always worn batting gloves inside my gloves, I also wear three shirts under my stuff to reduce the amount of perspiration my equipment gets. Still a little ripe, but not that bad - anyway, not so much that it has drawn comments.

    Toast: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 11:28AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Speaking of heavy shots, watch opposing goalie take one off the collar bone from a guy with a cannon on my team - he goes down for the count. Felt bad for the guy, but my male ego is saying get up. I don't know about you guys, but I have a bad habit of when really stung I refuse to go down. I ain't dropping unless I absolutely have to.

    Toast: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 11:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well, nobody ever accused me of being too smart I guess... :)

    least of all me

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 11:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)
    kidding dear

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 11:39AM PST (-0700 GMT)
gee what qualifies as "absolutely have to"? Unconsciousness I guess?

    Tripp: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 11:41AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Oww smott. Glad to hear you went with the Bud therapy, though..heh heh... dulls the pain.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 11:42AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I fear I do thrash around a bit more often than Toast....the recent throat shot had me on all 4s for a bit and last year one right off the point of my hip had a similar result. Oh well.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 11:43AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yes the Bud worked great! Didn't help teh STeelers' loss get any less painful however. On the bright side, Kordell Stewart finally threw a pass longer than I could....

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 11:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I know he's a great runner & receiver, but aren't quarterbacks supposed to be able to throw? TO their own guys?

    Tripp: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 11:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
3 shirts underneath? Yeesh. I usually wear a turtleneck with a t-shirt over it under my pads. Just something I've always done, and if I don't do it I don't feel right. I also have a friend who is a dry cleaner and gives the ol' chest protector a steam cleaning once in awhile. It really helps

    smott: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 11:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I use rubbing alcohol to swab stuff down....supposedly kills germs....but can't really use it for the gloves....

    C5: . . . . Mon, Nov 2, 1:28PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Toast, gads, I know what you mean. Last night, second game, screen shot, and naturally I use the guys in front to place my bets, as some of them are inevitably going to take away some of the shot percentage. Shot comes in and deflects off a skate and RIGHT into my pad. I mean IN TO my pad, between the knee and the pad (I wear the tops a bit loose). OWW! Fortunately, we won 13-3 and there was plenty of time to nurse my knee back... but yow...

Smottsie - the throat shot from two years ago felled me good - not be able to breathe does that. However, like on Friday night when Hasek was thrashing about as if shot, that I don't like. If you are hurt and can't physically go - drop. Outside of that - I guess I stagger around like a drunken sailor. Hmmm...real smart. :)

    : . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 5:26AM PST (-0700 GMT)
good morning all. Toast, throat blast. ugh... I tried the manly route after doing my knee this summer. I lasted until the very next shot. Down for good. : >)

    smott: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 5:38AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Here from the Hell Freezes Over Dept....allowed less than 3 in a B-game last night, rare for me. After getting spanked 4 straight games, our old ringer shows up and we win 6-2.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 5:40AM PST (-0700 GMT)
This an "early game" ie 9:40 PM. I notice I am a lot sharper in games where I didn't happen to take a nap beforehand - go figure that eh? Problem is, most of my games are 10:30 - 11 PM....if I don't grab a catnap before, I'll be roadkill next day at work. But I tend to be less sharp. So what to do? Oh for lost youth.

    Sieve: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 5:41AM PST (-0700 GMT)
My submission for latest goal against of the season award: 1.6 seconds left in the game !!! We still won 7-2 but I had a beauty of a game going. Kinda lets the wind out of your sails... oh well. a win is a win.

    Sieve: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 6:10AM PST (-0700 GMT)
hi smott, most of my games start at 10-10:30pm as well. Coffee doesn't do it for you, huh? I'm a big fan of the power nap...

New streak ends at one...Lost last night 4-2. First loss of the season. I figured we would have some trouble when only six guys show up....18 on the other team !! all young pups too, Our poor team just got tired... I wish it was our sunday team playing last night, they like showing the young boys a thing or two on the ice...

    Beatts: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 7:06AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sunday team still unbeaten....We play the team we beat in the finals last year this sunday...I imagine they are looking for revenge.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 7:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
When you guys plays stop-time what is the normal period length? Toast has mentioned 10-10-10....my Sun league goes 15-12-15, that was a LOOOONNNGG game with only 7 skaters....

    smott: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 8:19AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yah Sieve I believe in naps too! But even a cup of java doesn't shake that fuzzy-head thing....just have a lower energy level...have been giving up early goals. Last night I was napless and sharp as a tack, even in warmup, very unusual....

    smott: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 8:19AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Of course today on 4.5 hrs sleep I am a little less than a dynamo! :-D

    Grass: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 9:25AM PST (-0700 GMT)
s -- Our stop time games are 15-15-15... and as much as I would like to nap prior to a game, it just won't work. Can't make the brain shut down. For late games, I eat a large dinner and try to stay off my legs as much as possible. (Also LOTS of H2O with din-din!)

    Grass: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 9:25AM PST (-0700 GMT)

    Sieve: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 10:00AM PST (-0700 GMT)
smott, I'm not talking by the cup, I'm talking by the pot. Its like my eyes are propped open with toothpicks. Grass, too young ??? BTW, my stop time games are 15-15-15 also. 5min. OT if needed.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 10:27AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmm 3 15s sounds tough....running time you can really use up the clock with strategic icings or dump-oer-the-bench etc. Stop time, uh uh. Gotta play...

    Sieve: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 10:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)
check out this meltdown at my game last night: About 6 mins. left to go, we are winning 6-1 and all of the sudden their goalie slams his stick down, takes his gloves off, slams them down, same with mask, ALL DURING PLAY !!! Then this guy proceeds to SCREAM at one of his guys: "DON'T YOU EVER DO THAT TO ME AGAIN, YOU M F!!!" I mean like really screaming on and on. Anyway, no one on my team knows what the guy did to him but end result was a 2 min. delay of game penalty. hehe...made me think of Hexy in the old days.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 10:40AM PST (-0700 GMT)
My goodness such a temper....brings back fond remembrances of Hexy chasing Robbie Brown up the boards after he'd scored a goal...equipment flying...too funny...

    smott: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 10:41AM PST (-0700 GMT)
The bulk of my conversations with my D consist of "Ooops" "Sorry" and "Thanks!!"

Oh and of course "(*^&&*^*&^ MY FAULT ARRRRGGH"

    C5: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 12:00AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Tripp, I know what you mean: button

    smott: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 12:50AM PST (-0700 GMT)
You guys are studs. I can barely play in an ice rink in summer it gets so hot....

    Tripp: . . . . Tue, Nov 3, 4:50PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Thanks for the link, C5. At least you didn't have to wear a jersey. Our genius captain got us NHL-weight sweaters. Not too bad when you can take them off between shifts and cool off... awful when you're wearing a heavy c/a pad and collar. We only got a 3 minute break between periods, too. Not to mention our run n' gun team giving up an average of 37 shots a game. Kept the GAA a bit under 4, though... not too shabby. But still, gimme ice hockey any day. I love it

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 5:12AM PST (-0700 GMT)
morning all. Smott, your boy Wregget looked tough against the Wings last night until his back spazzed out. Blew his back on a normal looking glove snare then just skated off the ice. Thought it was an equipment problem but he never came back out.

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 5:12AM PST (-0700 GMT)
This I do know: Tyler Moss has the coolest mask in the NHL.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 5:18AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi fellas. Didn't see Moss' mask...but yes Kenny W has a history of back problems...think he's 36 now so I suspect hings won't improve....

Meanwhile my fave Flightless Fowl come back from a field-goal down vs Philly....Skudra injured in LeClair collision...Barrasso still out....hmmm, any CHatsters wanna wear black & gold?....

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 6:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Saw the Skudra collision. Looked like Leclair was going to get the worst of that one (post between the legs). Yeah, Capt. Simpson blew open McCarty's nice new stitch work under his right eye mid-way through the first and got a game for not being tied down.

    Beatts: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 7:09AM PST (-0700 GMT)

    Vile: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 8:40AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I rarely see fight footage rebroadcast. Maybe one punch to illustrate what happened, but never the whole fight...

    smott: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 8:48AM PST (-0700 GMT)
This footage traced the lunatic over the bench, to a sucker punch of an unsuspecting guy, around the net towards another victim, who wisely out-sprinted him, pretty darn silly....

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 11:25AM PST (-0700 GMT)
The guy's name is Jeff Kugel. He's about 6'8" and 270 lbs. I'm serious! The guy is a defensive tackle with blades on his feet. Total head case. He'll play in the UHL or ECHL somewhere, and get suspended there too. The guy's a time bomb.

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 11:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Saw that Pens game last night. Had to listen to the Flyers announcers...undoubtedly the biggest homers out there. Maybe the Pens goalies need little "Fragile:Handle with care" stickers on their sweaters. If the Pens have to call someone from Syracuse, they could have 21 year old J.S. Aubin and 20 year old Craig Hillier in the goal. Yuh-oh.

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 11:42AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey Sieve... does Moss still have the mask with the devil on top and the flames all around him? He had that in the AHL, and I always liked it. Tyler Moss. What a prettyboy name. He's gotta be the goalie for the all-Aqua Velva-team.

    wolfman: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 12:04AM PST (-0700 GMT)

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 12:48AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Thanks for saying Wreggett and I played a good game, wolfman :-)

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 12:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Think the Pens will make a trade, smott? Saw Aubin against the Oilers, and he looked kinda shaky. Although he did beat the Avs 3-1 in the preseason. Mind you, the Oilers are playing awesome lately and have speed to burn, but with Tommy B and Skudra's injury problems, things could get kinda ugly in the Burgh.

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 1:19PM PST (-0700 GMT)
tripp, yeah thats the same Moss mask. First time I've seen it up close. He and his mask were sharp in relief of Wregget last night. unlike Ozzie who was a sharp as jello.

    wolfman: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 3:44PM PST (-0700 GMT)
No problem Tripp. I guess I meant Moss. Not enough sleep and a lot of hockey makes for miskates. :)

    smott: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 9:45PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Doubt the Pens will make a trade (with what money? Marino had to take out another loan just to make payroll again last week....) Think they will ride Aubin/Skudra until Tommy decides his groin is functional....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 9:46PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm that didn't come out quite right....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 9:47PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Arrrgghh again tonight in B we played a better team to a pretty good 6-4 result, got chippy last 2 mins, guys pitched, they score 2 in the final minute while we stand around, now I have to live with an 8-4 score. RRRrrrr.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 9:47PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Oooops don't want to demoralize my teammates....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 9:49PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Am I the only one who gets a little snappish over in the crease violations? Maybe weighing less than 130 lately I notice it more when 200 pounders blow past my crease...not one whistle today for that stuff. Finally got exasperated when one guy cut behind me through the crease as I was moving to the post and totally spun me around. Ref didn't notice. Rrrr again.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Wed, Nov 4, 11:21PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Bought an Itech Profile 2000 mask and used it in game action for the first time tonight. Love the visibility and weight. Now for the games (2 back to back). Both ugly in their own ways. First game played against the dirtiest team in the league. Funny thing is, my teammates were not backing down from these guys at all. I got run, the other goalie got run, 3 fights, 2 ejections, and blood on the surface. You'd think we were getting paid for this. Oh yeah we won 4-1. Late game we couldn't seem to get the legs going. Leading 1-0 with 2 minutes left and the D left their best player alone atop the crease. Bang!!! It's in the net. Really crappy way to lose the shutout. Oh well, at least we got the point. Time for the random rant. The person who keeps our league stats screwed up big last week. She mistyped that I had allowed 33 goals in a game instead of 3. Really tough to accomplish this task as I only faced 27 shots. Head as thick as a brick, she doesn't want to believe she is wrong. SO I currently am listed last in the league with a 7.60 GAA and save % of 44%. Boy am I taking crap over this. Burns me up every time I see the sheet. Anyone know where to play in Korea? Might have to travel on a job and a week (or 2) without hockey would drive me nuts.

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 5:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
morning all. gb, those sound like my summer league stats except they were correct! : >)

    C5: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 6:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Tripp, you kill me. Smott, get out the lumber. Can you hit 'em good? Not last night's game but the other night I was swinging the lumber and the refs weren't calling me. I decided to try and get a penalty, and if I'd wanted one I could have made a huge cutting show slash, but instead I just kept hitting hard as I could and couldn't get a call. Guess the refs expect me to fend for myself?

    C5: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 6:49AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Oh. Won last night 6-4, in a tough game, shots 50-23 against. One of the opposing team's guys, #44, was good at crowding my net and staying in front. During one play I noticed that his numbers, you know, the heat-transfer ones, were peeling at the tops, so once during the 2nd period and late in the third I reached up during a play and managed to peel both his 4's off and throw them behind me into the net. No one noticed, I think, but I couldn't stop chuckling to myself for the rest of the game, watching him skate around with no numbers... :-D

    smott: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 7:22AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Heh heh C5 too funny!.....As for lumber, lately I don't swing my stick, it swings me! Anyway what if one of these guys actually notices me pecking at him and decides to level me? Such are the worries of a Babe in Boyland.....

    smott: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 7:24AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Oh and a question re delayed penalties as it relates to the goalie gaining control of the puck....what is control exactly? We hooked a guy from behind, ref's arm goes for teh delayed call as the guy comes in alone, cuts across fires it, I get a piece of the puck but the rebound rolls along the top of the crease. THeir trailer bangs it in. I guess this is a goal? Did I have to actually catch/smother the puck to get a whictle on a delay? Ref says I didn't "direct" the rebound.....anybody know the rule on this one?

    : . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 7:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
ms. smott -- According to Rule 409:

    : . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 7:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Should an infraction of the rules be committed by a player of a team NOT in possession and control of the puck the Referee shall signify the calling of a penalty by raising his arm and upon completion of the play by the team in possession will immediately stop play and assess the penalty to the offending player.

    : . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 7:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
"Completion of the play by the team in possession" in this rule means that the puck must have come into the possession and control of an opposing player or goalkeeper, or has been "frozen". This does not mean a rebound off the goalkeeper, the goal or the boards or any accidental contact with the body or equipment of an opposing player.

    Grass: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 7:47AM PST (-0700 GMT)
(Ooops!) 'twas the Grass spouting the rules...

The Glossary defines "Possession and Control of the Puck" as: The last player or goalkeeper to make contact with the puck and who also propels the puck in a desired direction.

that may have been what the ref was think of... so unless you meant to direct it to the trailer, I think he made the right call...

    smott: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 8:15AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Heh heh I meant to direct it "away from the goal"! Which I did.....

    C5: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 9:20AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sounds like the right call was made, although, wrong for your side of the board...

    Tripp: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 9:23AM PST (-0700 GMT)
hahaha C5. De-numbering a guy. Now that's a first. Gotta love that. Hey smott, you think those refs might have their own interpretation of the rules? Check this out.... During one of my Bataan death march roller hockey games two years ago, we gave up a 2 on 1. I came waaaay out to take the shooter, because this guy never passed. Ever. So I'm about 15 feet out of the crease, and the guy shoots it right into my midsection. I hold on for the whistle, which I got. Along with a 2 minute delay of game penalty because "no part of my body was in the crease when I controlled the puck ". I kid you not.

Well, in Tripp's case the ref was half right... Rule 612: "A minor penalty shall be imposed on a goalkeeper who deliberately falls on or gathers the puck into his body, when his body is entirely outside the boundaries of the goal crease and the puck is behind the goal line..."

    Grass: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 9:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Perhaps he thought the puck was behind the goal line...

    Grass: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 9:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Actually, depending on how far up you were he could have used the second clause of 612: "...or when the puck is outside the boundaries of the "goalkeeper's privileged area"..."

Is it possible you were out beyond the face off dots?

    Vile: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 10:07AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Wow, Beflour got pasted last night. I think the official count was 3 goals on 6 shots. First 2 goals were on the first 2 shots. He was yanged and Turek went in. Stopped a few, but still let one in himself.

    Tripp: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 10:10AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Naaaw... I wasn't even at the bottom of the circle. Most refs let you get away with that. This guy also called me for delay of game when I shot the puck over the boards into the bench. Sure, I did it on purpose... but it looked innocent enough. There's no glass there, so I thought no penalty? What's the rule, o' keeper of the book of laws? :-)

    Vile: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 10:24AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmm, Turek only faced 3... for a total shot count of 9 by the Sharks. 4 goals on 9 shots, I don't know if players do that well on an empty net.

    Grass: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 10:33AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Rule 609: A minor penalty shall be imposed on a goalkeeper who shoots the puck outside the playing area, regardless of intent, except when the puck deflects off a player, the boards or protective glass or screen before leaving the playing area, or when it leaves the playing area not protected by glass or screen, such as the players' bench.

    Grass: . . . . Thu, Nov 5, 10:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
So, if you managed to hit the bench, you should have been safe...
