    Hi wolfman

The Canadian team just won the inline championship 6-2. The American team just couldn't get anything going and Canada was really strong on the D. Not a bad game from what I saw of it. A lot of straight up hockey.

Scoopster - good to see you back...I think GTHW is long gone. As for C5, he is still kicking around, we occasionally exchange email. Do you have mine? You can get it off C5...as for me, new job has me away from the chat most of the day, I peek in late at night to see what i have missed, but that is about it. But with you on the left coast, maybe we can get back to our late night sessions. Outside of that, I depend on email to keep track of my friends activities, so feel free to keep me updated on your season. It looks like I will be down to 1.5 teams this winter, a far cry from the last few years. *sigh*

Hey Toast, I have your email somewhere... the search begins... As of tonight I am back down to 6 teams...

What are roller hockey goal skates like? I haven't seen any, but SFSL just started advertising it.

Hi Chatsters a quick update...I see Felix le Chat has reported to camp in Toronto....but how long will he be there?....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Sep 9, 5:58AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Back here in the Burgh, Pens' promising backup G Petr Skudra dislocated his shoulder trying to make a save in practice. Yikes, out indefinitely. Now Pens only have 2 untested prospects behind Barrasso. Wouldn't ya know it, the second they trade Wreggett....

Hey everyone. Just back from vacation. I finally had to let those nicks and bruises heal up. Vile, I don't know what the CCM goalie inlines are like, but I had a pair of Bauers and the boot is the exact same one as a pair of their lower-end Reactors. They come with a TUUK chassis and those 64mm diameter goalie wheels. I could tell a difference between those and my old roller hockey skates. I have to say, though, I'm not really into the roller hockey, so maybe someone who's on the wheels more could give you a better answer.

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Wed, Sep 9, 7:14PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Vile - if you find out about the RH boots let me know. I've been looking at those for a while now. Garners at button can get them for alot less...maybe $275US or less.

    Hi Rocket Goalie

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Wed, Sep 9, 7:16PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I've heard that Florida's talking to Burke...don't know why they'd trade Jovonovski for Potvin...Niedermayer yeah, but Jovo? What good's a good goalie with a terrible team in front of him?

    Training camps are almost starting

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 5:18AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi all. short log, eh? Everyone must be at their local NHL training camp trying out.

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 5:28AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Question of the day: At what point can a sports team rightfully be referred to as a dynasty? The papers here are, of course, calling the Wings a dynasty. 3 finals in a row, 2 cups. I'd say they are on the verge.

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 6:11AM PST (-0700 GMT)
yes on the verge I'd say....Pens are also in the near-dynasty category...2 Cups in a row, they had a real chance to go down in history as one of the greats, but flamed out badly next few years...now their legacy will be Underachievers, Inc.....

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 6:11AM PST (-0700 GMT)
But if Wings make it 3 straight or maybe 3 out of 4 I would call it Dynasty Motor City.....

    Toast: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 7:07AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm...dynasty, I would say 3 in a row, or four out of five years. So who would that be...let me think...Canadiens (55-59, 75-79), Islanders (80-83), Oilers (84,85,87,88,90), Leafs (60-62)...um - I am a little foggy on the 40s...Flyers (73,74), Bruins (70,72) are also near misses that come to mind. I think dynasty has two implications, first success and second, the aura of superiority. All of those teams that won multiple cups pretty much did so as the favourite with the exception of the first one. I am not so sure the Wings meet that one yet. If they get to three...maybe.

    Toast: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 7:11AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I think in the final analysis, history dictates. When one looks back, is that team a dynasty? I look at the Bruins of the early 70s, a powerhouse, yet not quite considered among the elite of teams of the past. The great teams are made up of names, will the Wings leave that legacy?

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 9:04AM PST (-0700 GMT)
smott, after your 2 cups did ownership of Underacheivers, Inc. have a massive yard sale on talent or did they just implode? The nucleus and chemistry of the Wings is still intact for sure, BUT Scotty hasn't announced his big decision yet.

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 9:06AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Seems Pens stayed pretty well intact after theirs, yes?

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 10:42AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well the Pens stayed more or less in tact though Kevin Stevens was never the same after he smashed his face in a nasty concussion....

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 10:43AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...but teh sad story of the Pens is basically that of the inmates taking overt he asylum. Mario had way too much influence, and basically they shunned Scotty Bowman, even as he was winning their 2nd Cup for them. By the end of the season he was not even allowed on the ice for practices if you can believe that.

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 10:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...so they ran Scotty out of town, and with him went any chance for a dynasty. Of course Lemiuex's influence brought in some real winners like Danny Quinn remember that guy? Couldn't put the puck in the net but I hear he was a pretty good caddy for Mario.

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 10:47AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Wow, that IS hard to believe. Especially knowing how he runs the team over here. huh. My opinion of ML withers a little more...

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 10:49AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'm sure there wasnt then, but nowadays is there major ill will around town toward Mario?

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 11:11AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Nope Mario is well-loved in these parts, especially as he compares so favorably to the new Bad Guy in Town, Roger Marino, who is currently being sued by his Lemieuxness for non-payment of contract money owed....

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 11:15AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...is there any better way to alienate your (much-needed!) fan-base than by not paying the town Superstar? This Marino guy ain't too shrewd.....

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 11:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...of course maybe he's outsmarted us all and is just going to declare bankruptcy....in which case Bye Bye Birds....

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 11:41AM PST (-0700 GMT)
That would be a shame indeed. If it happened, I'd bet the NHL would promise Pittsburgh a team in the not-to-distant future ala NFL and Browns albeit different circumstances.

    snowman: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 5:47PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Reading an article about the Rangers being extremely interested in Jagr. It said they were talking with the pens general manager. Could it happen?

    snowman: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 5:48PM PST (-0700 GMT)
A bid supposedly being delivered this weekend

    Toast: . . . . Fri, Sep 11, 7:32PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Jagr's contract was heavily backloaded, smottsie and I were talKing about this when he signed. I don't think it is if he is moved, it is a matter of when...unfortunately - Pgh is rapidly turning into a small market franchise. I think over the next few years, the NHL will see more than one franchise fail - the league can't support 30 teams.

    smott: . . . . Sat, Sep 12, 1:50PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well Pgh is and always has been a small market franchise. SO far that's been a good enough deal for the Steelers and Pirates.

    smott: . . . . Sat, Sep 12, 1:51PM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for Jagr, Craig Patrick says no offers will be entertained.

    smott: . . . . Sat, Sep 12, 1:51PM PST (-0700 GMT)
My guess he will stay for about 2 years possibly 3 but I doubt it.

    Toast: . . . . Sat, Sep 12, 3:11PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ah - you are correct smottsie. What I meant was revenue wise, with the disparity growing larger between have and have nots, places like Buffalo, Pgh, Ottawa and Edmonton are feeing the squeeze. And the Canadiens are apparently incurring heavy losses as well.

    J37: . . . . Sun, Sep 13, 8:39AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey all. Remember me? I have since had surgery and recovered nicely. I also have canceled my Brian's blocker because it never came and bought a vaughn 4000 from Rupps. I'm glad I got to check in with everyone and I wish you all good luck! Winter's just around the corner-thank God.

    Tripp: . . . . Sun, Sep 13, 11:08AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I've never custom ordered anything from Brian's, but I've heard some stories. Are their delivery times THAT bad? The most I've waited for Vaughn stuff is about 6 or 7 weeks.

    Tom: . . . . Sun, Sep 13, 11:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)
    No one on

    Mntender: . . . . Mon, Sep 14, 8:07AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I've always had good luck with custom orders from Brian. They even called our house to talk to my oldest son to make sure they were properly protecting the area on his blocker hand. He was able to use the blocker right away, and has never used a Brian blocker before.

    Goal35: . . . . Mon, Sep 14, 10:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi all, leagues started Fri nite.... we won our first game 7-4, we were up 3-0 in the 2nd, but we got sloppy in our end, 2 turnovers in our zone for breakaways guys settled down, I played pretty well, 37 svs didn't give up a bad goal and stopped 5 other breakaways.. new guys on team fit in well, should be competetitive...

    smott: . . . . Mon, Sep 14, 10:41AM PST (-0700 GMT)
No experience with Brian's special orders....J37s delay might just have been due to whatever Ziggy's been smoking lately!

Got a last-minute call Sat to fill in for an A-league team....gee it was fun, and nice to know that I can still survive at that level, had some pretty good D, only 3 breakaways, 1 goal....won 6-4 in a tight well-played game. So, yay!

    wolfman: . . . . Mon, Sep 14, 11:22AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Got smoked on sat nite 10-2. I had no D and the guys couldnt get anything going. Lots of break aways which I only let 2 in lots of 2 on 0 and 3 on 0.Bad game on everybodys accont. O well next week will be better.

    Beatts: . . . . Mon, Sep 14, 1:52PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I just got back from the Philidelphia Flyers training camp, held in Peterborough Ontario. Excellent!! It was amazing, only about 200 hundred people there so we had great seats directly above the corridor that they came on to the ice from. They divided the team into 4 squads and had two exibition games. I got my Team Canada Jersey autographed by Lindros, Brind'amore ??(sp), Chris Gratton, Ron Hextall and alexandre Diagle. They were all excellent guy's who chatted with me while they signed. BUT... One guy who I now think is the biggest peckerhead in hockey is Eric Dejardans. What a prick. He was just plain arrogant. He snapped at a bunch of 8 year olds as he was coming off the ice, then after about an hour he came back out in plain clothes to the area where the other players were signing. (Realize that there was hardly anybody asking the players for autographs..They were not being bothered at all. Anyways, I see him walk by me and head into a hallway to have his picture taken for the local news. I knew he would be heading back my way so I waited there about ten minutes. Finally he's walking right to me and I ask "could you please sign my Team Canada Jersey" Miond you I'm the only person standing there. He says "LATER!" and walks right by me. It would have taken him 1 second. It's not like he was being hounded. Lindros was and he was being a cool guy about it. Oh well enough of my rant. BTW...John Van Biesbrouck is also a really good guy. Very personable...

Huh? Did I miss something here? I have no idea why this rant happened, can anyone enlighten me? Let me see, what is new with me...played a doubleheader tonight, won the opener of the A final 5-2, then won the opener of the B final 2-1 in OT. Played okay, a couple so so goals but I managed to stop the puck when it counted. My game is off for whatever reason, hope it comes back with winter season approaching.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Mon, Sep 14, 11:50PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Played 2 games on Thursday the 9th and world almost came crashing down. Lost first game 3-0 faced 36 shots so I don't feel to bad. Second game, lower division team playing upper division opponent losing 5-0 with 10 minutes left in game, scramble in the crease, arm twisted behind back and POP!!! Couldn't feel hand and thought I broke the arm. Dislocated shoulder. Popped into place. Didn't do the manly thing and keep playing. Scared the hell out of me. Saw the season blowing up with two weeks to the playoffs. Arm felt good enough to play in another league tonight. Won 6-4. This week has been a rollercoaster. NO pun intended (roller hockey goalie)

    smott: . . . . Tue, Sep 15, 5:50AM PST (-0700 GMT)

Ah - thanks smottsie, but it is a case of the numbers being highly misleading. All three goals were weak, one was really really bad. Somehow I manged to buckle down, especially in the OT game, but based on the quality of shots I was facing...not the best effort by me.

    : . . . . Tue, Sep 15, 4:40PM PST (-0700 GMT)
However, you are right (and you too G35), in the playoffs it is the W that counts. In that case, two thumbs up.

Last night after getting shelled in an 8-3 loss, the Cap of the opposing team comes over and tells me how impressed he & his guys were with my performance (sic) and asks me to be goalie coach for a local HS freshman-boys team.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Sep 16, 5:32AM PST (-0700 GMT)
So, hmmm. Not sure what to do. Comitting the time won't be easy but I could probably do it. But I'm not sure about actually being a coach, that is my only professional teaching experience has been in tennis not hockey and I've never had any training in how to train goalies beyond what I have heard and read, and experienced when playing in college.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Sep 16, 5:33AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...and quite frankly I wonder how much they'll listen to a chick!

    ...so, opinions welcome.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Wed, Sep 16, 7:28AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott, speaking as someone who was put in almost the same position, I advise you to go for it. All of the best coaches had to start somewhere. The biggest piece of advice I can give you is to not try to change them into duplicates of them. One of the biggest challenges is going to be figuring out the psyche of you pupil. The right encouragement (or admonishment) at the right time can be the key to how far you and your pupil can go. As for if they will want to be taught by a "chick", I suspect they will see you as a hockey player first. Invite some of the team members to see one of your games. Most kids have players they will try to emulate the playing style of. Learn as much about that player as possible and watch for what parts of that players game your pupil tries to imitate. Every goalie has their own style and things that make them feel their best. Good Luck. I know this rambles and I apologize for that. If you want to converse more on this you can email me at freemang@spawar.navy.mil or gbfreeman@home.com

    : . . . . Wed, Sep 16, 7:30AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I think I need a spell checker. It should read "duplicates of you" not "duplicates of them"

    : . . . . Wed, Sep 16, 7:56AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Thanks gbf....yes after a few years a tennis pro I do try not to force students into any one mold...they usually have a style that works for them....however the youngsters usually do try to emulate their heroes, often at the expense of their own games, ie trying to do Hasek-type stuff when they just don't have the flexibility or whatever....I usually try to start my kids off withg questionairres about who they are and why they like their sport, and what are their strengths & weaknesses etc....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Sep 16, 7:57AM PST (-0700 GMT)
ooops that was me, but where I probably need some direction is drills...I am not a fan of what I typically seein HS practices, ie, shooters lining up and bombarding the poor goalie etc...not of it very game related...

    smott: . . . . Wed, Sep 16, 7:58AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I would like to devise drills that involve goalie movement, angles, and add realistic stuff such as screens and rebounds to any given shooting drill....suggestions guys?

    Goal35: . . . . Wed, Sep 16, 9:02AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Go for it smottsie..... as far as drills and the such, Hockey Player mag has alot of them in them by Mitch Korn, who is goalie coach for Buffalo and also Ohio U... i'll check and see if he has an e-mail, maybe you could get some pointers from him - he definately stresses fundamentals

    smott: . . . . Wed, Sep 16, 9:38AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm my fundamentals consist of mostly "get in the way somehow" heh heh is that something I can easily teach a kid? :-D

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Sep 16, 9:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
hi all. hey smott, asking you to coach is quite a nice complement of your style and play for sure. Congrats!!! Any $$$ involved? Either way I say go for it. Just knowing you by your posts in the chat here for the past 8 mos. I can tell that your people skills would work great in that capacity. I dont think the "chick" vs "dude" status of coach will matter a bit as long as you show your small people a) you know the position, and b) genuine concern for and interest in them. I get the impression that you've got both of those covered. As far as drills, you COULD follow a teaching book until your formulate your own regimen, which I think would come together naturally with a little experimentation. Best o' Luck!!!

    gbfreeman: . . . . Wed, Sep 16, 10:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott, on the subject of drills and training books, check out button . They have a set of books (Vol 3 is the coaches drill book) that I found very interesting reading. They showed me that much of what I was doing personally was close to what I needed to do and minor adjustments made the world of difference. The drill book is written by a goalie coach with the intent of building each aspect of the goalies game. The first two volumes "Cobra in the Crease" and "Psych up/Shut out" are also excellent. "Psych up" includes quotes and stories from yesterday and today's goalies that you can use to reinforce information that you provide your students. Hope this helps.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Sep 16, 11:03AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Geez thanks for the help & compliemnts fellas!....Heh heh as for $$$ I'm sure there is none in fact I imagine they couldn't find anybody to even volunteer to teach the little rascals!...So who knows what I am getting into....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Sep 16, 11:03AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...actually I do have some trepidation...parents canbe such a pain whenit comes to their kids' sports....that is one thing I don't miss about teaching tennis....

OK Chatsters here's my submitted entry for Shellacking Of The Week! Last night, first game in a B league )where I have a D-team)we show up with 6 guys vs one of the top teams.Final score, um, 16-3.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 5:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
The gory stats: 61 saves on 77 shots.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 5:52AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Actually I was hanging in there around .850 SAA% until they scored 3 times in the last couple minutes....I confess I was feeling a bit of fatigue by that time.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 5:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Pretty nasty numbers though, huh? I don't usually count shots but I figured I needed something to amuse myself. Anyway I am tired and beat this AM.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 5:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...of course at my age with that kind of workout I suppose I should be grateful not to wind up in the hospital!

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 7:00AM PST (-0700 GMT)
morning all. smott, you count your own shots? I could never keep track. Thankfully, ours are up on the scoreboard.

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 7:06AM PST (-0700 GMT)
That might qualify for spanking of the month, maybe even season smotts. However, I am jonesing to get back on the ice so bad I would gladly have taken your place in that debacle. The knee is on the verge of feeling normal in every day situations. Havent tested it under pressure yet though. Season starts in 3 weeks. Fingers are crosssed.

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 7:11AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well hopefully your boys pick it up a bit for you in game 2. What did you decide on coaching the kiddies?

Ok, my post for Shellacking Of The Year. After carefully considering the extremely high embarassment potential, I played my first game in over 10 years two weeks ago. It was with a team of guys who'd only been skating (much less playing) for a few months, so just how bad could I look. Well, somehow we even won 11-6...it's just too bad I allowed those 6 goals on a meager 22 shots. I guess they're too busy learning to skate to find the net yet. ;-) Oh well, have to start back somewhere.....

    smott: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 9:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Good going J.T and WELCOME BACK to the ice! Though hmmm I wonder if a win disqualifies your entry for Shellacking of the Year! Heh heh I'll have to put the question to the Chatster Shellack Committee....

Hmmmm, ok, I suppose it doesn't count, but the GAA of .72 against people who can hardly skate...heh heh. The really sad part was learning what several years of ultra-endurance events (marathons, ironman, etc) has done to totally kill any flexibility I once had....

    smott: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 10:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
yikes a marathon ironman on the Chat!

J.T. I thought you dropped off the face of the earth... give a shout, there are lots of empty nets looking for tenders... (and this is the time of year that capitains are looking to hook up with dependable goalie...

    Toast: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 4:59PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey all...news from Toast-land (located near Toronto). Won one of my summer finals in a two game sweep, upset the first place team 3-2 to win it. Then my other team got upset 6-3, blowing a 3-1 third period lead. One forward line cost us, they were minus five for the game. Anyway, game three is scheduled for Sunday - and I am working. So I can't make the game. However, that is a moot point. Why you ask?

    : . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 5:03PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Because for the first time in my adult life, I got into a scrap. Rec'd a three game suspension for my troubles, plus lost the fight. Happened with only a few ticks to go - a scrum in the far end and their goalie got involved as the odd man - so I had to go down to even it out. I knew I would be suspended, but hey - if I knew I was going to miss the last game - no big deal.

    Toast: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 5:05PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well, that is my sorry tale. But gee, it was sort of fun...who would of thunk it?

    J.T.: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 5:44PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Wow Toast, quite the story. Reason I quite playing back in high school was due to getting in a scrap. It wasn't pretty, I was pretty disappointed in myself, etc. Coaches in high school don't look nicely on it when you get suspended for three games in high school. But, I've grown up a bit now... or have I. ;-) Thanks for the welcome back Grass, but didn't I just say I really suck these days? ;-) And, I suppose I have to buy equipment again now. More business for Battram it sounds like....

    ScottBattram: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 5:44PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi All, my buddy Steve McKichan just got online, he played goal for the Canucks and Milwaukee Admirals of the IHL, and now runs the biggest goalie school in Ontario, as well as having made one of the best instructional videos I have seen (then again I am in it!) hahah... I will give him this website.. he is the guy to ask any goalie related questions to, he also has been the goalie coach of the Detroit Vipers of the IHL... look for Steve to appear soon, once he gets a little more familiar with the web and his first "real computer" (he had an old MAC about 8 years ago.. I think it was one without a colour monitor!) Of course now I want one of those new MACS that have just come out....

    ScottBattram: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 5:54PM PST (-0700 GMT)
J.T. We always welcome new business!! Just outfitted a guy who decided to play goal this season... top of the line everything! and I do not believe he has ever played goal before!! If we can be of assistance, just ask!

    J.T.: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 6:08PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Grin, what a businessman. :) I haven't played in ten years, but fortunately my Ironman sponsor has deep pockets. Heh heh....I'm sure I'll be getting in touch with you soon. Just what I need....another expensive new hobby.....

    Goal35: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 6:13PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Scott - after the good works i've heard and the nice exchange rate, i think i'm gonna have to order a new blocker, although i'm gonna catch hell for the guy's at he pro-shop I play P/U with.... was looking at the Brians Angle -Lite, but yours looks just as nice if not better constucted

    Goal35: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 6:14PM PST (-0700 GMT)
cripes, i meant words... Hey Mr. T!! dipping into a scrum, never thought i'd see the day...... :)

    J.T.: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 6:17PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I have to agree Scott's stuff looks great. Having not played in so long, and having a good budget makes this all the harder. So what are some recommendations?

    Goal35: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 6:19PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Scott - I remember Steve, been an Admirals fan for over 20yrs... that guy that owns the pro shop is Fred Berry, who also played with the Ads....

    Goal35: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 6:20PM PST (-0700 GMT)
anything and everything he's got.... hahaha, with his 10% off sale and the exchange rate, you can't beat it for custom gear

    J.T.: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 6:23PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Grrrr...you Americans and your 10% off sale. ;-) You're killing our economy....so bad I had to take refuge in the states to earn real dollars for a few years. I'd agree that everything looks good and prices look great though. A friend was recommending Brians stuff as well....

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 6:55PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'll vouch for the quality of Battram gear 100%, I've thrown the Vaughn 3500's and Reactor 6 gloves into the corner. I think Scott's gear is a far better buy and equal if not better in quality than the big names.

    J.T.: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 7:12PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmmm, nobody has a single negative thing to say about Scott's gear? Someone, please give me some doubt or I'm going to have to take advantage of the weak loonie! Can't start playing regularly for 3mo (serious off-season ironman trianing) but gives me lots of time to buy and get excited...

    TheCat37: . . . . Thu, Sep 17, 9:54PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi guys/gals. I'm looking for the top of the line Itech mask... pro 961, i think... the best price i've seen is $600. can i do any better? any info is appreciated

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Fri, Sep 18, 3:09AM PST (-0700 GMT)
The Cat37, if your willing to spend that much money for a heavy mask why not spend it on a lighter better quality mask? I suggest you look into a Pro-Masque. Weather you choose the Classique or the carbon fiber model you'll get a far better product that actually comes with a guarentee from the guy who makes them(Matt Garland). I personally wear one of his masks as does Smott. You can ask her about the quality and service you get from Pro-Masque. I don't think Itech will send you a loaner if you ever have to send it back for painting or repair, Matt will. Check it out at this button

    Vile: . . . . Fri, Sep 18, 7:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)
If you want to hear something bad about Scott's gear, call Source for Sports London. (We had a discussion earlier regarding the Sources salesmanship) I don't have the finances to buy Battram equipment, but I plan to gradually work it in. If you bought his stuff through a reseller, it would cost as much as Brians/Bauer/etc. I figure once my wife sees some healthy bruises, she warm up to the idea :)

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 18, 8:12AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yes TheCat37 I must concur with our friend CdP re the Pro-Masque, it is far lighter and equal/better protection than the Itech catseye I used to wear. That Itech was bomb-proof for the first couple of years, but as the fibreglass wore down I began getting my bell rung more often, until finally it began literally breaking up around my bean!

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 18, 8:14AM PST (-0700 GMT)
ANyway while I am sure the protection of a new Itech will be OK, that sucker is HEAVY. Start doing some neck exercises now if you're planning to buy it, also the fit is quite narrow through the face. I would recommend at least calling Pro-Masque and talking to Matt, the service is excellent, and you won't get a guarantee from Itech. When that mask begins to chip and splinter (I had a great big chunk blown out of the ear-piece eventually but don't let that scare you) you cannot get it replaced for free like you will with a P-M. At least make the call and check it out.

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 18, 8:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well I have no further Shellackings to report today fellas, but I am recovering physically from the 77-shot Wednesday barrage. As far as my pride, well....long gone!

    J.T.: . . . . Fri, Sep 18, 8:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Nope, don't want to hear anything bad at all about Scott's gear....just being a bit sarcastic....you know, the whole "too good to be true" thing. Nice to see in this day and age that making a great product with great customer service still can get you ahead. Grin, look for an order soon Scott....scary, but the beginners want me to play for them next time I'm in town in October....

News from Flightless-Fowl land....it appears Pens co-owner Baldwin is making a play to buy out Moneybags co-owner Marino....presneted a 5-yr profitability plan to Bettman, now trying to land more investers to get the $$$ necessary. My bet is Lemieux would be on the list of owners, which judging from his past inability to select talent (over his golfing buddies) may not be such great news. But I bet it would increase fan base.

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 18, 8:30AM PST (-0700 GMT)
So far the only links-pal Lemieux has gotten on the team who could both hit a golfball and actually play hockey has been Barrasso.....

Well ladies and gentlemen it is hockey time in the frozen north (read Alaska), once again. I must report that golf, softball tennis, and fishing, all of which are sports, do not get or keep one in shape for playing goalie. I had my first game on sunday, got SPANKED!!!! 53 shots and 10 went in we scored 1, oh well only one way to go, up! I have not seen Scoop yet but hope to soon. I hope everyone had a good and safe summer. I'll post more later, maybe when I have some tale to tell on Scoop. Later all.

    Tripp: . . . . Fri, Sep 18, 11:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
TheCat37... listen to CdP and smott. I've been wearing Itech's for a long time, so I'm used to the weight and the narrow fit. But some of my friends who wear Eddy and Pro Masque's can't understand how I can wear such a contraption. The Pro-Masques are very comfortable, but since I've never worn one for an extended period of time, you'll have to take their word for it on the durability... but they wouldn't steer you wrong. Weird, but I just like the way the Itech's look. File it under the old "if you look good, you play good" theory, I guess.

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 18, 11:21AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Heh heh yes Tripp I like the looks of the Itech a bit better than the P-M too....but hey now that I'm wearing these scruffy Louisville's I'm just a walking fashion violation anyway, so......

    Fourqts: . . . . Fri, Sep 18, 11:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Went to the Coyotes intersquad game last night and they are looking pretty quick..... Boolin had some incredible saves as did Waite.... The team speed looked intense and they were banging pretty hard in the corners. Now all we need is to trade the holdout captain for another scorer and we will be lookin pretty good this year. Scott.... Anxiously awaiting new pads.... Hope they live up to all the Props. you get in this room.....

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Fri, Sep 18, 2:40PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Just read that Dom is prone to auto accidents. Kinda reminds me of the Pele Lindburg story. from what I read the Dom has had 2 moving violations with alcohol involved. He obviously doesn't drive as well as he plays goal. I think he should look into paying a driver or taking lessons. After reading the latest accident update I find it hard to believe a ferrari lost traction in a curve without driver error. 1 of 2 things happened to cause that type of accident. 1 he entered the curve going too fast and attempted to correct which leads to 2. He either locked up the brakes, which is the fastest way to come to a stop in a curve with a non ABS vehicle, and his speed plus surface conditions were against him. Or the more common mistake, there was either over or under steer problems and he attempted to correct the problem and over corrected with too much steering input and lost control of the car. The later being the most likely to happen to an untrained driver.

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 18, 3:39PM PST (-0700 GMT)
The layman's version of the above: Dom drives like a drunken idiot.

    Toast: . . . . Fri, Sep 18, 7:02PM PST (-0700 GMT)
News from Leafland...training camp - Leafs look like they are going to suck again (yes, I do bleed blue & white despite that eloquent report). However, on the plus side - they do have one player having an awesome camp...his name is - er - Felix. Go figure.

    Toast: . . . . Fri, Sep 18, 7:04PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Then again - I seem to be the sole Felix supporter among Cujo mania - who, I think - as many of you know - is overrated. But how about them Canucks - who have no NHL calibre goalies in camp...

So any predictions on who the longest holdouts will be? We should all be happy to see there isn't one holdout goalie in the whole lot of them! Any guesses on who will tend net for the Canucks? Keenan? Burke? Maybe they'll bring McKitchen back...heheh...

Well we won last nite.6-3 against the top teamfor this season. I took a golf swing in the helmet and boy did it smart. Also he scored on the rebuond.I made a few good saves. the guys played like a team. we picked up a new player that has a helluva shot. Come to find out he is a Dr.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Sun, Sep 20, 8:00AM PST (-0700 GMT)

I had a guy who would rush in at me down the middle( without the puck) as fast as he could while I was following the play and when he was at the top of my crease he would stop and shower me with ice. At the same time his team mate would fire off a shot on goal while I was receiving a face full of ice. That happened once, the second time he tried that I poke checked his skates and he damn near ate the cross bar. He didn't try it again needless to say :-)

    wolfman: . . . . Sun, Sep 20, 1:00PM PST (-0700 GMT)
That sounds like a plan. I guess some just need a reminder.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 7:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Nasty incident beforem y Sat night game, the game before had the obligatory post-game scuffle, some guy got his feet kicked out from under him, wham, face down on the ice sans helmet. A lovely Y incision on his forehead-eyebrow, paramedics said right down to the bone. Needless to say our ice-time was delayed waiting for cops/ambulances etc...poor fellow stretched out on the ice about 1/2 an hour, his whole team left, got dressed and went home.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 7:52AM PST (-0700 GMT)
On the injury front, really bad news for my favorite flightless fowl....Pens scrappiest D Darius Kasparitus out with a knee injury during last nights game w/Detroit, it appears to be an ACL, so most if not all his season could be shot...RATS, he's in the top 3-4 on Pens depth chart they cannot afford to have injured...

    smott: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 9:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well my 2 week break from hockey has disintegrated into 7 games last 10 days....well, maybe 8. Late cal last night from my Cap, we made the playoffs, (a shocker there) have Game 1 tonight at 11 PM. HOwever I am already scheduled with a different team at 9:40. Calling like mad now for subs.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 9:02AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...so, any Chatsters available to fill in for me tonight at Warrendale PA BladeRunners?.....

    smott: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 9:02AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I guess I could play the 9:40 game, drive like a maniac in my equipment and get there by about 11:15.....

    C5: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 9:57AM PST (-0700 GMT)
JT, hey, C5 here. Read your ironman web page and I have to ask... would this be Penticton, BC? I can tell from your descriptions/pix that it is. My long-lost, quasi-insane uncle (we love this guy) has an orchard in Oliver. I used to spend portions of summers there when I was a kid.

    C5: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 9:57AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott... am about to place order for Cooper Reactor 5 pants for $102 USD... you have these pants, right? Doesn't sound like a bad deal...

    C5: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 9:59AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Any of you new chatsters who'd like to get your email address to me (I collect 'em and give them out) press this button ... And there are some old, maybe not updated pix of some of the chatsters at this button ... That is all.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 10:17AM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5 on those R5, pants great deal, but how much do you value the parts below your waist? Heh heh KIDDING....the thing I like about the R5s was the ease in mobility, I can scramble around in them pretty well, however they are rather thin in the hip area...if you're in a deep crouch no worries but if you are a bit too upright you can realy get nailed on the top of the hip...thigh guards OK but no great shakes, an annoying seam between front and outer thigh must have some kind of bullseye on it 'cause that's where I always get hit and have been black & blue there from time to time.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 10:18AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Actually had no real complaints from about the first year or more, then they seemed to just kind of get thin and beat-up.

    Vile: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 11:03AM PST (-0700 GMT)
The sports exchange has the Reactor 5 for $102 and the Cooper GHP5000 for $85... Anyone have experience with the Cooper pants?

    See the above.

C5 - Yep, beautiful Penticton BC. Home away from home every August during Ironman season. Race is only three weeks gone and I'm already working on righting this year's horrid dance with the sun.....

    Goal35: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 2:27PM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5, Vile.. i also had the R5 pants, and yes, they seem to wear out quickly - i also had the upper thigh shield crack in 2.... they were quite happily replaced with Brian's Ridge pants...

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 6:18PM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5 - the only catch to the Cooper stuff is that it's guaranteed old stuff. Cooper was bought by Bauer a couple years back and Bauer was bought by Nike. Nike got rid of the Cooper line about a year ago (correct me if I'm wrong chatsters). So that means that any Cooper stuff has been sitting on a retail shelf, warehouse or at the factory for a loooong time.

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 6:23PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Don't get me wrong, I love Cooper stuff (got an R5 c/a, R6 pants (ok, they're really Bauer's, but....) and just sold my old R5 pads). I'd still be buying Cooper if I could.

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Mon, Sep 21, 6:24PM PST (-0700 GMT)

Sorry Smott, but Darius Kasparitus blowing his knee out....It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. He is probably one of the biggest "knee hunter's" in the league. Maybe he'll learn his lesson.

Don't sweat it Scoop. Is the camp invite only? ya might want to try showing up and seeing if you get away with it. Believe me, I've done it more than once, all they can say is NO. It looks better for you to show up ready to play hockey than not show at all. Last season 7 goalies showed up for camp, thats a lot of golaies for a CHL team to deal with. After the first day 2 of them didn't come back, just didn't show up, and the numbers kept dwindling. It got to the point during the season that they had to put the equpment manager in as goalie for one away game. My point? Even if they don't ask you to hang around and ride the pine after camp, they still know who you are and if the need ever arises, which it just might, you could get your chance. Give it a shot anyways, show up. Tell them you had a message on your answering machine asking you to show. He who dares.....wins.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Sep 22, 6:21AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm I understand KAspar is not the most popular guy in the league but I must disagree with the knee-hunter tag he has. The guy is 5'8" and very thick/heavy through the legs, his natural hip check (which he executes low to high in textbook fashion) is indeed a lot lower than most guys are used to being hit, but he is not going after the knees. I'm sure it doesn't feel that way though.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Sep 22, 6:22AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well lost my playoff game last night in a minor shellacking 5-2, 43 shots/38 saves. Counted again to amuse myself though sometimes I lose track and forget saves. I did stop the first 24, then things got ugly late in the 2nd.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Sep 22, 6:23AM PST (-0700 GMT)

Sorry to hear about the loss smott - but seems it wasn't for your lack as the other teams comments show.... Was just informed today that we play an "A" game sat against the defending league champions, and 3 of our top 5 guys are going to a wedding.. i think it's the same team i subbed for a few weeks ago, maybe they'll be nice to me?

    smott: . . . . Tue, Sep 22, 10:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Thanks G35 actually this numbers thing is scary....last few seconds of the game lastnight, a giveaway in front of our net, boom they score the 5th goal....I'm doing the math after the buzzer on 4 goals vs 5 on 43 shots...hmmm wow a .909 SAA just went down to .883!....Enough to send a chick to the minors!...

    smott: . . . . Tue, Sep 22, 10:18AM PST (-0700 GMT)
OK Chatsters here's a question: WHY are the tall gangly guys so hard to read? Is it just because they are so awkward? For aging relics like me reflexes are not to be depended upon, so I mostly try to read/anticipate....

    smott: . . . . Tue, Sep 22, 10:20AM PST (-0700 GMT)
But this kid last night who scored the last goal was impossible to figure out, all arms and legs, he's like Lurch Munster out there....he lurches one way, I'm flailing the other....bing, goal. Oh well. Meanwhile the fast shifty guys, I'm stoning left & right....

    C5: . . . . Tue, Sep 22, 11:11AM PST (-0700 GMT)

Gangly guys...two things - the reach on these guys is long and they look like they are going in two directions at once - tough to read. More compact guys, I find easier to follow on dekes as well.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Tue, Sep 22, 4:34PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Grass, and you know how the rest goes to your statement......and if you get caught you aren't S.F. ;-) Smott, sounds to me like your letting the tall guys body movement through you off. Small or tall never line up on the shooter thats leaning or bobbing in a certain direction. Stay square on the puck and disregard body dekes, bobs or weaves. Easy said, hard to do but now you know and knowing is half the battle :-)

    Tripp: . . . . Tue, Sep 22, 5:36PM PST (-0700 GMT)
When it comes to taller guys, sometimes it's more effective to attack them. Since the taller guys have to use longer sticks, some of them tend to let the puck dangle a little too far from their body. Once they get close enough, I'll dive out and poke check just enough to keep them honest. If they've got size and soft hands, I usually go with the CdP method and try to square to the puck and not commit until he makes his move.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Sep 23, 7:21AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Thanks for the hints guys....and no I never line up on the body, just the puck....however with the octopus arms this guy had the puck did an awful lot of lateral movement....maybe the poke would have been the answer.....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Sep 23, 7:21AM PST (-0700 GMT)

Give up 10 goals on 41 shots, one long range screen the rest all from close range, zero rebound goals, these guys just did not shoot until they had at least half a net and I was a mere spectator.....in short, Major Ick....

Practiced with my former CNN team as the backup goalie... Didn't feel tired at all throughout the two-hour practice. Smott, you'll be so proud-- I've been running 8-10 miles a week, working out and have dropped 10 lbs (not to mention three inches on my waist, which means I look like Charlie Chaplain here at work today). They've picked up some really good players in the draft and will have a really good team. I have to confess that I'm sort of disappointed that I changed teams, since it looks like they finally have some players with some hustle, unlike the summer season. You chatsters heard my complaints about them not showing up for games, especially the D. I played the practice like it was a game, just to let them know what kind of goalie they were missing, and I shutout the scrimmage for the first hour. Got TAGGED on a shot by this one kid who showed up, then left... I think he decided that our team is beneath him. I have a star-shaped bruise on my sternum this AM, and feel like I've got a dinnerplate implanted in my chest. I've never, ever been tagged like that. Anyone know where I can get a good clavicle protector for cheap?

    C5: . . . . Thu, Sep 24, 7:20AM PST (-0700 GMT)

...well, I am 29... snick, snick... I also bought a juicer, and radically changed my died. Fiber, green barley powder, no carbs after 2 pm and protein in the PM. And I love carrot juice. Make shakes out of it. Eat whatever I want for breakfasat, pasta/salad for lunch, and juice/protein/vitamins for dinner. For the last 5 weeks. I bet you $10 you could lose 10 that way... I also have not had ANYTHING carbonated in 6 weeks. Try it, Smottsie!

Hey, Smott, we're chatting! Practising with Sun Data, the old team I used to sub for, tonight. They don't know I'm not on CNN, so the first time they'll play me will be Sunday night, against the Apaches, a team they're probably expecting to roll over. We'll see... Are you @work?

    smott: . . . . Thu, Sep 24, 1:08PM PST (-0700 GMT)
    Yep at work right now...

    smott: . . . . Thu, Sep 24, 1:08PM PST (-0700 GMT)
...actually I am on a low-carb diet myself in that the only carbs I eat are complex, that is no rice, no pasta, no bread, etc.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Sep 24, 1:11PM PST (-0700 GMT)
And my dear what do you think carrot juice is anyhow? Protein? It ain't nuthin but carbs and fibre, and in fact the particular sugars in carrots have a hugely high glymcemic index, which means they bounce your blood sugar as much as any simple carb like pasta or bread would do. In fact, a Mars Bar affects your blood sugar less than a carrot. I know, go figure.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Sep 24, 1:13PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Actually I'm looking at macrobiotic myself but at first glance it seems high in carbs....

Went to the Tampa/Islanders game last night. Both teams looked slow in the 1st. 2nd and 3rd picked up with the contact. Ranford and Schwab in the net for Tampa and Flaherty and Lourde for Islanders. Bill was looking good and kept tampa in the game . The Islanders need to get a goalie that's consistent although I think Lourde could do it. They all looked pretty good though, I could see good skating is the key to being super instead of average. All of them moved very good in the crease, lateral movement was impressive to watch. I can say that there is a big difference in the CHL and the NHL both player and goalie wise.

Ah, diet. A subject that I've become a bit familiar with from doing ironman and burning 10,000+ calories in a day. The general consensus now is low-carb diets are bad for you. Your body can only process approx 15-20g of protein an hour, so any more than that is just putting added stress on your kidneys. By the same token, the 90%+ carb diets they were advocating a few years ago are also way too high in carbs and cause massive blood sugar flux. The best bet is to just eat a balanced diet (see, your mom was right) and try and stay away from as many simple sugars as possible. The reason people see weight-loss results on low-carb diets is that your body actually goes ketogenic and starts burning muscle due to the fact it thinks it's getting too much protein and needs to eliminate some. As soon as you up the carbs again, the weight will come back like a brick. Just my two cents....

I just got a new cats eye cage. The golf swing I took on sat did do some damage. It bent and cracked the cage. The one I got now is much heavier,so its going to take a bit to get used to. The only problem is I get a glare off the lights. I might get it powder coated to cut down on the glare.

Sorry, missed it with the glare. I really should get my screen powder-coated or something. ;-) On a much less cheerful note, following in recent threads, I managed to break my foot on a run earlier in the week. Fourth time I've broken it in the same spot. Doctors are debating now if a few screws might do the trick. Question is, how much time off. First time was 10 months, then 6 months, last time only took 3 months to heal. Bets anyone?

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 25, 10:41AM PST (-0700 GMT)
OUCH JT sorry about your foot....what's the deal with the weakness in that area?....And yep the key to diet is balance....except that nutrition experts have been all over the map about what balance is....80% carbs? 70%? The 40-30-30 thing is interesting....for somebody like me that translates into abotu 500 cals of protein a day, 125 grams or so....that is doable but in nearly everything you eat the balance is way higher towards the carbs, just putting bread around a piece of turkey and you're in trouble.....but by and large we eat way too many simple carbs in this country I think, adn WAY too much refined sugar. Just getting rid of that would improve anybody's health I'd think....

Smott, AAA! You mean carrot juice is souped up? Drat, I knew there was a reason I liked it... what other thing would you recommend juicing? And what's this macrobiotic thing about?

    Goal35: . . . . Fri, Sep 25, 12:19AM PST (-0700 GMT)
hmmmm, haven't done much juicing since my Bassamatic 5000 broke, C5 - ever try Bass?

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 25, 12:37AM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5 ah hmmm actually I would not recopmmend juicing as it tends to reduce the veggie or fruit to a more easily digestible state, bouncing your blood sugar that much quicker.....also many fruits have a high sugar content and may make you hungrier quicker....

    smott: . . . . Fri, Sep 25, 12:42AM PST (-0700 GMT)

As for macrobiotic well the diet emphasizes lots of complex carbs, and for those of you into zen and balance etc it might be quite interesting, many good leafy veggies, legumes, soy & miso proteins, sea veggies etc. Very good diet to get rid of the processed stuff we consume every day...

I think the most important part of all this is to listen to what your body tells you. If you feel great after eating combo A, B, and C( and that combo wasn't twinkies, chocolate milk and a snicker bar) then your body is getting what it needs. If your not you will see a drop in performance or mental capabilities. I've seen people do well on a massive protein diet and others about fall over trying the same thing. results differ from person to person. Mom's advice/diet was right for sedentary living. If your talking performance enhancing diets then you will have to through some of mom's diet out the window. I think our Iron Man friend will concur that you have to tailor the diet to your body as well as your sport. It's apparent that if your a cross country runner your not going to have the same diet as a Sumo wrestler. One thing I've found that really works good for me is Sushi( Salmon, tuna) 1-2 times a week. It really picks me up and gives me energy, I even feel more alert after eatting it. BTW, I like apple and celery combo juiced together looks like green death but tastes fantastic

well, pulled off the first of my 2 A games last night, held on to win 5-4 getting outshot 48-27... hope i got some gas left in tha tanks for the game this aft against the #1 A team.... yeeeeeha!!! it's good to be a goalie :)

    Goal35: . . . . Sat, Sep 26, 7:55PM PST (-0700 GMT)
well, how things can change in a day..... got my ass kicked but good 14-3 this evening, got outshot 58-22 and by the 3rd period it was a shooting gallery, we stayed with them the 1st period, but by the late 2nd and the 3rd our guys were dead...they were far too fast for us, and the stickhandling and passing was incredible... worst loss in the 5+ yrs i've been playing, am trying to keep the 2x4 put away for now... :)

I met C. Dyson from Source London this weekend. It didn't go over to well. What's the deal with him? Was he a good goalie back in his day, or is he just a pompous jerk or both?

    Good websites Smott

Started the new r-hockey season last night and continued the winning ways... 7-4 ... Only had one sub (5 total skaters) and ended up getting shelled in the third. had two four on nones that eventually went in..... Having tired skaters trying to play D is not much fun... But when they are rested they can really put it on net.

    fourqts: . . . . Mon, Sep 28, 12:22AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Anyone have any experience with vaughn masks??? TSE has the vision 3500 for $160 US. Mostly R-hockey so i think the "rec" type of mask will be fine and the price is interesting..... Feedback?

    smott: . . . . Mon, Sep 28, 12:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yes my experience with Dyson is that he is indeed a pompous jerk. Only over the phone however, I guess he was worse in person!

    C5: . . . . Mon, Sep 28, 1:16PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Is it my imagination, or do more teams have 1/1 goalie tandems this year... Islanders being an example? Penguins? What are they doing, Smott?

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Sep 28, 1:59PM PST (-0700 GMT)
My interaction with Dyson is the same as above, a rather cocky individual who comes across as a jerk. Maybe it's from seeing his own picture in the catalog too many times LOL

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Sep 28, 2:47PM PST (-0700 GMT)
My buddy talked to Ranford after the game and said he was a jerk as well. Schwab is cool, he gave away pucks to the crowd as well as his stick after warm ups. A real people oriented type of guy

    wolfman: . . . . Mon, Sep 28, 8:38PM PST (-0700 GMT)
The last time I talked to Dyson he seemed like a jerk. When I was in Puckstoppers he seemed like a nice guy but I think it was just a coverup. Now it seems like he could care less if he talks to you. We will see how good he is as a goalie because as I here it he is supposed to sub in our sat nite league.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Sep 29, 5:22AM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for Pens goaltending Barrasso is still #1 man until somebody outplays him which is unlikely this season. #2 guy Skudra dislocated his shoulder and is out for weeks, that left an interesting duel beteen #1 draft pick Craig Hillier, highly touted and Jean-Sebastien Aubin. Hiller has not played to expectations, while Aubin has been great and is wildly talented to boot. He will probably make the team and ride the bench until Skudra comes back, to ridet he bench.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Sep 29, 5:23AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Which is OK, because Barrasso always does best when he has lots of work, like last season. Probably 60 games min, let the other guy play 20 or so just to spell him.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Sep 29, 5:24AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Of course Tommy B's penchant for injuries may turn that whole formula on its ear. If he can just keep his hands of the au pair girl, and his wife can keep her hands off the 9-iron, he should be OK! Heh heh.

Debut tonight in B/C. We need to pick up a couple of skaters to be real competitve this tine, we've gone from champs, to semis, to out of playoffs last 3 sessions, due to attrition. Any of you guys know some good D who'll drive to Pgh on Mon/Tues nights?....

    Goal35: . . . . Tue, Sep 29, 7:30AM PST (-0700 GMT)
hey all... got a call from the Cap of the team I subbed with last fri to see how we did sat.... he told me that the week before their A team he plays on got beat by them 17-0... was little comfort to my bruised ego, and ballooned GAA of 7!!! lol!!

    C5: . . . . Tue, Sep 29, 9:03AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey, played with my new team last night and we WON 4-3! It was fun! I totally expected it to suck, but it didn't. Our team a seriously middle-of-the-road team, but they play with such heart and they really seem to have legs going into the third period, which is good. We played a team which could easily have beaten CNN on an average night. I did not steal the game, but I was definitely the reason we won. I let in two sharp angle goals, but if you can believe it, both of them would have gone in on a better goalie. One off a skate, one pinballed off a skate and then one of my guys. Nothing I could do to save those magic-eye shots. Made some nice saves. We'll lose a lot of games this season, but we'll win a lot more if we play with that kind of heart. The real test will be the play Sun Data this Saturday.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Sep 29, 10:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi RG at the moment STraka is centering the line between Barnes and Jags. German Titov centering line #2.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Sep 29, 10:02AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Pens still need to trade Nedved. Rangers have expressed interest, but since there's nobody on the NY roster worth taking I doubt that will fly.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Sep 29, 10:03AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Stu Barnes an instructive example of how far the Pens have fallen offensively. Remember when he was a 4th line checker in Florida? Now first-line for the Pens. So, hmmm.

Prolific scoring in jrs doesn't mean much...ever hear of Stan Drullia? All-time leading scorer in OHL history (jr league that Gretzky, Dionne, Lindros, Orr, etc. all came out of) - in fact many of those junior scoring phenoms become great checkers. Like Carboneau, Peca, Goring, Gainey...

Hi guys....hmmm seems we seldom have late night lurkers anymore....just coming off a nice 6-3 win first game B/C league. I started off ignominously be scoring the first goal on myself, tidily deflecting a centering pass in off my own pad. Smooth move actually. Despite the bad omen things went well after that and I wound up in the way a lot. ProMasque takes a major ding off a point blanker in the 3rd, my ears still ringing. While I am peering around deaf for the puck, it lands on top of the net. So a bit of luck for la femme smottsie.

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Sep 30, 5:49AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Congrats on the win smott. I had a similar bonehead move during summer season. Made the stop at top of the crease and in an attempt to put the puck in the corner, shot it off the pipe and in. Smooooooooooth.

Smott, I think you might be the ONLY chatster who'd want to catch me in those crotchless pants, and even then, perhaps not. :-D The R5's are good. They even have the Team Canada logo sewn on the right leg. They're Bauer's, now, but last night as I was inspecting them (haven't played in 'em, yet) I did notice that the buckle has COOPER stamped on it...

G35 those Vics served me well!

OK here's my Weekly Shellack entry.....after standing on my head for 2 periods and keeping the score to 3-2, I get snowed under by um 9 goals in the 3rd for a tidy 12-3 final.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 6:52AM PST (-0700 GMT)
These are my poor D-level schleppers, stuck in an A/B league where we are the bottom dwellers as you might imagine. Showed up with only 6 skaters, and by the 3rd nobody could skate anymore. Most of the goals scored by like the 3rd wide-open guy on the play tapping it into the emtpy net while I scrambled/flailed/swore.....oh well.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 10:02AM PST (-0700 GMT)
For any of you Lalime-fans still out there I believe he is in Anaheim, given up 12 goals in the last 2 games....

Yike! Could the brilliance he showed have been a fluke??

    : . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 1:09PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ah hmmm some say yes....I thought he showed solid fundamentals when playing with confidence, when not, he flailed a lot and overplayed.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 1:10PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ooops that was me. In fact on a Chick Note I believe Rheume was higher on the depth chart than Lalime in the minors when they were on the same team briefly....

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 1:10PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Also if Pens showed that kind of diligence on D for Barrasso he'd be setting records too....

    C5: . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 3:02PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott, what't the depth chart? What are its criteria? And... uh, on a Chick Note, where were YOU on it? ;-)

    C5: . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 3:10PM PST (-0700 GMT)
A friend of mine just emailed me and told me he picked Eddie B to be a goalie in his pool. After thinking about it, I think that's a great idea, because for a fantasy hockey league you want a goalie who'll put up good numbers, not a goalie I'd feel passionate about and love to watch playing. I'd pick Hasek and Eddie for sure, or maybe Richter, Hextall, or Burke, goalies who'll have consistent seasons. His second choices were Potvin and Thibault, two goalies I advised him NOT to get, since they'll most likely play on mediocre teams next year and won't put up the numbers likely to make you a successful pool player... any thoughts on this?

    fourqts: . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 3:17PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Good thought on the Bel pick... Very defensive system and he is generally solid through the regular season. My second pick would probably be kolzig or that devil goalie ( that i refuse to name). Hasek will be Hasek but will the sabres play D in front of him or again rely on Hasek's ability.

    fourqts: . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 3:19PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I also took the reactor 5 advice and ordered a set of pants today from TSE.... Will work out to about $130 US after shipping for a set of pants I'd spend about 230 US for if I bought them in Phoenix

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 4:55PM PST (-0700 GMT)
fourqts, you check out Behind the mask in Peoria(Randy Exelby) for goalie equipment yet? Also try Play it again in Mesa(jayson Smith) I got a good deal on my R6 gloves at BTM $100 a glove and they had only been used for roller hockey. If you haggle enough with Randy he will cut you a deal but you have to lean on him hard.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 4:56PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Chris, I like the new header, looks sharp

    smott: . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 7:26PM PST (-0700 GMT)
For consistency yes Eddie so long as it's not an important game, and Brodeur, Hasek. Hextall, C5? You kidding? Anyway don't forget Roy - he ain't dead yet. Barrasso has a year or 2 left also. I will be interested to see if Kolzig continues strong.

    Tripp: . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 9:08PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I like the new header too... Although, Hexy and Br**eur? Yuck. Hey, if TheCat37 is still looking for that Itech mask, TSE has one for under $500. It's blue with a white cage

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 9:24PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Gotta agree with Smott...Hextall? Will he get even 25 starts this season?

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Thu, Oct 1, 9:25PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Dafoe and Hackett are actually pretty good picks in most of the leagues that count saves, shots & low GAA, but don't count wins.

    C5: . . . . Fri, Oct 2, 5:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
No no no, Smott, remember, these are picks for the player pool. The Flyers stand to win a lot of games this year, and Hexy will share the load there. Besides, I love Hexy. My favorite goalies are this: Hasek, Vernon, Hackett. Roy is good and even fun to watch but...

    C5: . . . . Fri, Oct 2, 5:57AM PST (-0700 GMT)
J, I got my R5's for $102 USD... I like them so far.

Carpe De Puck, Yes I've been to BTM in Peoria and now in phx (32nd st and Thunderbird)... and yes I've haggled with them quite a bit.... I got a MCM Phantom catcher for $160 with one little scuff on the wrist guard. The people at BTM are very cool but they have not moved on price points even with the devaluation of the can dollar... ???? I'm an accountant and if they are not gonna move on pricing considering the current international situation, and I can order equipment out of canada at a significantly lower price... It just doesn't make cents (HEHE). I'd like to support them more, being the local shop, but I also don't want to spend all my money (It costs enough to get into the leagues here due to limited facilities)

    Tripp: . . . . Fri, Oct 2, 11:38AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Looks like Eric Fichaud is in for a loooong season. He got traded to Nashville for Mikhail Shtalenkov. That leaves the Predators with Fich and Mike Dunham to tend the nets. That could get ugly

    Vile: . . . . Fri, Oct 2, 12:13AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I just bought some very used equipment... I guess I paid a fair price for the stuff, but the pads are crap. I have seen pad covers at the source for $72 dollars that will at least not make me ashamed to wear them out on the ice. Does anyone know anything about these pads, or any place that might be able to refurbish them?

    Vile: . . . . Fri, Oct 2, 12:19AM PST (-0700 GMT)
On a related note, remember I'm a new goalie, the pads have a short strap all the way at the top of the pad. Is that supposed to go around my thigh? There is no way it will. It seems to be just for carrying the pads.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Fri, Oct 2, 2:01PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Vile, it sounds like you may have gotten childs pads if the top thigh strap won't fit around your thigh unless you have massive Tom Platz thighs.

Speaking of ROY, I understand he's gotten his new equipment, KOHO of course, and that it looks even better than the old stuff. We should be seeing the new stuff hit the market sometime soon I figure. The way I understood it, it is a change in color and slight redesign on the blocker. I bet KOHO is going to have a lot of that potvin Leaf's gear they will be trying to give away HAHA

    Vile: . . . . Sat, Oct 3, 7:57AM PST (-0700 GMT)
No they are 32" cooper pads. Very old. The straps are old leather, and might not be as long as they used to be.

I went to the Stars vs Coyotes last night. Good game. I little mismatch. it was basically most of the Stars with Belfour in goal, against the Pheonix minor league affliate. They poor backup goalie, what happened to Waite?, was lunched, munched, and spit out to sqirm on the ice. He eventually got some scoring support (too little too late) and began to make some pretty decent saves.

Hopefully I'll get a peek at the new-look Roy tonight during the Hershey Bears/Syracuse Crunch and Avalanche/Penguins doubleheader. . I can't wait to see him with the chest pad/jersey crackdown. Last year at this game, he gace up 5 goals in 1 and a half periods and got the hook. Hopefully we'll get a better showing tonight.

Man, the Pens didn't have too much to offer last night. Barrasso, Hatcher, Jagr, Stu Barnes, and I guess Jiri Slegr were the only really recognizable names. Jean-Sebastien Aubin out played Roy and got a 3-1 win. Marc Denis looked really solid for Hershey, and Craig Hillier was good in goal for Syracuse.

Check out Hasek's pads at this button ... Interesting how he wears such tall pads and doesn't tie them down up top.

Well fellow CHatsters I am re-thinking my decision to bad that poly-carb throat shield....once I got an Itech and now a Pro-Masqu, the darn thing clanked around so distractingly I ditched it and went with the soft collar only.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 7:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
So wouldn't ya know on Sat night I managed to stop a blast with my throat, just to the right of and below the chin on the P-M. OW!!

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 7:54AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Could not swallow for a few seconds (very icky sensation) and next day could not turn my head to the side. Begged off a call to fill in in A league. Rats.

    C5: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 8:24AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Oh, missed A league, that sucks. I still watch with envy as my old CNN folks play up in the division above me...

Have finally figured out my glove. I feel so stupid! I was putting the wrist strap on too tight. I practically don't even use it, now, and my wrist motion is incredible. I can catch so much better with my glove, now. Last night made a glove save on a hard slapshot, caught it, and you should have heard the SNAP!!!! the glove made. :-D

    Toast: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 8:28AM PST (-0700 GMT)
OUCH smottsie. You know I am a big proponent of that shield...once I put it on I got used to it in a hurry. It is like anything else, you do adjust.

    Toast: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 8:30AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm C5, I don't quite follow you on the wrist thingy. I like my strap fairly tight, but when I catch the puck sweet, it hardly makes a sound in the webbing. What made the snap?

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 8:40AM PST (-0700 GMT)
yesterday marked the first day of training camp. Met the new coach, hear all the new rules, do's and don'ts. Chew with your mouth closed, zip your fly, fines, contracts blah blah then on to take photos for the team and the newspaper, physicals and a run. came back and played some shinny for an hour or so. Had fun let in a few but they were good ones. Ice was a little soft from the WWF wrestling match the night before but it was hard this morning. Gotta go back for more practice this afternoon, 2 a days sure are fun...NOT. Talk to you all later

    : . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 10:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Toast, the Revolution glove has two straps inside, one across the top of the hand, and one for the wrist. I use the wrist loose and the hand nice and snug, works very well. The snap came from catching the puck SWEET-- I like that term, T!-- right in the webbing. Nothing but 'net, as it were. What kind of glove do you have?

    : . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 10:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
CdP, cool! Where are you playing? What are your team's prospects?

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 11:22AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'm in NC with the Fayetteville Force, they are affiliated with the Detroit Vipers. Dave Lohrei is the new coach, he's coming from Nashvilles team. Not bad so far, 32 people for camp. Myself and another goalie are walk on's. Goes to show sometimes just being there and going for it can work in your favor. This years team looks like it'll be better than last years, whole different program and outlook, more team oriented with a real coach in the drivers seat.

Just to let you know, Scott's gear is working and looking great. The 2 a days are helping break it in REAL quick and the new design must be working cause I'm getting a lot of shots to the white areas on my pads :-) I guess being in position helps too

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 11:41AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Thanks Toastie but actually the problem was that after wearing it for 5+ years with the birdcage, I could not make the adjustment to wearing it with the mask.

    wolfman: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 12:52AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Played sat nite and won our game 5-2. Sun league was a 8-2 win. Scotts pads are working great.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 1:02PM PST (-0700 GMT)
    owoooo hey wolfman.....

    wolfman: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 1:09PM PST (-0700 GMT)
    Hi smottsie

    C5: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 1:14PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm... CdP, I wonder what it's like to play in a league where guys aim their shots instead of just aiming them at the net and hoping for the best. Some of the better players I've played against are looking up as they release their shots, and hmmm... they have better luck them them going in.

    wolfman: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 1:14PM PST (-0700 GMT)
    Hows your jaw?

    smott: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 1:19PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I am still sore today have to play tonight and tomorrow...

    wolfman: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 1:21PM PST (-0700 GMT)
So far Ive been lucky that way. No shots under the mask.

    : . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 3:36PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott- I definitely got used to my throat shield after taking one in the collar bone and having it bump off my throat (actually caught n held it there). It was during a warm-up and the guy who shot the puck thought he really hurt me bad. After that shot the sheild was ordered and on!!!

    snowman: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 3:39PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Tripp-Hope you had good seats to that game. get to many of the Bears games? BTW -SMOTT that was me

    Beatts: . . . . Mon, Oct 5, 8:47PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well, I started my season last night...We won 5-1 with only 5 guy's...We picked up two new guy's who played OHL Junior A about five years ago...WOW can they ever shoot the puck!

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 6, 6:09AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm Chatsters I am having a run of poor fortune here....ever have one of those streaks where you seem to get a piece of everything yet it finds its way in? I think I invented that!

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 6, 6:10AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Lost 7-4 last night, several goals of the trickle-in variety...however made 1/2 dozen really superior stops including 2 rebound saves and a 2 on 0. Very yin yang kind of game.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 6, 6:13AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Also the bulls-eye remains on my head....got run right through the back of the net on a high speed lateral break, huge welt on my back where I hit the middle bar inside the cage OWW. Did stop the shot however so some consolation, but really been a roadkill sort of week.

    C5: . . . . Tue, Oct 6, 8:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I got run Sunday morning in a game, Smott. Played with a lower division team, and that's an understatement. Last time I played these guys with CNN we beat them 15-2 and I think I faces maybe 15 shots. We were playing a good team, not a great one, so I decided to play my best. We tied 3-3, with nothing going in in the shootout. Anyway, during that game I got run, and my neck is still sore. I'm going to practice keeping my head up and next time someone runs me they'll receive some lumber under the chin.

    : . . . . Tue, Oct 6, 8:54AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Can't seem to decide to play my best, merely hope to! :-D

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 6, 8:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
whoops that was me! I usually try to keep my head up and avoid collisions....this was a case of going for a poke check which put my head down at about hip level....

    smott: . . . . Tue, Oct 6, 8:56AM PST (-0700 GMT)
So, POW, one minute at the top of the cerase, the next in the back of the net trying to uncross my eyes!
