Just cleared the log. This time I had to split it into two logs to make it look like I wasn't slacking in my archiving :P A total of over 300KB of chat in a month. Keep talking!!

    deke: . . . . Sat, Mar 20, 6:53PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey Chris: Thanks for clearing the log. I haven't been able to get in for nearly a week. Nice to be back.

    Chris: . . . . Sat, Mar 20, 6:56PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sorry about that. I'll try not to let it happen again...

    C5: . . . . Sat, Mar 20, 7:11PM PST (-0700 GMT)
If I were to more to Manhattan, theoretically, could I still play hockey? How far from Manhattan would I have to go? I'd have to sell my car since I couldn't afford to keep it. Does anyone know?

    Tripp: . . . . Sat, Mar 20, 7:20PM PST (-0700 GMT)
There's a lot of good hockey in Noo Joisey and Westchester county. There is a league at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. And there's always the "hockey in Harlem" program if you're feeling adventurous. Not having a car will make it much harder for them to carjack you :-)

    deke: . . . . Sat, Mar 20, 10:31PM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5- Tripp's right about hockey in NYC. Being a transplanted New Yorker, I can tell you that there is plenty of ice, but hard to come by right in Manhattan. White Plains has a rink, about 25 miles outside the City. There's a rink in Elmsford (about the same distance)with a very active rec league program. Rangers practice at Rye Playland (also in Westchester) and I understand that they are building a state of the art practice facility with two sheets in Purchase, NY on the campus of my alma mater Manhattanville College. I haven't heard when it will be done. In all, I'm sure you'd find ample opportunities.

    C5: . . . . Sun, Mar 21, 9:42AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Cool. Thanks, guys! I wouldn't have a car, though, so you never know. At least no one would mug a hockey player on the subway! :D

Anyone seen Tabby's new mask? Bizarre. It has an eagle on it. Very cool color coding on it, though. I'm posting pix of Tabby right now on the picture page.

    : . . . . Sun, Mar 21, 3:29PM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5, I can't find the Tabby pic anywhere. You sure it's up?

    C5: . . . . Sun, Mar 21, 9:02PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sorry... My computer crashed right when I was uploading... and it's too late now to fix it. I'll do it Monday night. Sorry, kids... :(

    Toast: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 6:47AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Deke, I have had the same problem, I could not download the log for several days. News from the Toast front, one league is entering the finals. WE upset the first place team 5-3, 4-2 to advance. In the second game, they hit about six posts but the puck kept bouncing the right way. Felt pretty good to win, our team is a bunch of pluggers, guys with some Jr B. and Jr C. exp. a few years ago, but not really talent laden.

    Toast: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 6:52AM PST (-0700 GMT)
My Sat. A team finished first, we get the sixth place team in the first round. Should be interesting, they can score goals but can't keep them out. They have a few guys who have played some minor minor (double minor intentional) hockey like in Texas or the ECHL, but they have a sub-par goalie who kills them weekly. If they pull a tending switch, we could be in for a fight. My Tues team finished second and draw a creampuff for the first round, a team we usually handle well.

    Toast: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 6:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
However, a problem has arisen for me. I am supposed to go to Montreal for a 30+ tourney, but my Sat. A team plays there entire best 2 out of 3 finals that weekend. What do I do? The tourney team is kind of dependent on me, while the A team is very good, and some nights I don't get a lot of work. However, it is the finals vs. a tourney.

    Goal35: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 8:02AM PST (-0700 GMT)
ahhh, thought it was just me that couldn't get the log. We started our playoffs this weekend won our fri game 4-2, and then had a rough game sat night which we won 8-4, I got plowed into, never saw it coming, pretty sore today, glad we dont have to play til Sat. The first place team asked me to sub for them Sat night, but it was right before our game, so no... now we play them next. Plus am on the list of goalies who are not able to sub in C or C1 for playoffs.... was nice, the list is the 4A and 3B goalies out of 13 which i am one.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 8:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi guys...nice to see the CHat trimmed down, couldn'tload it there for a day or two....

    smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 8:54AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Re-surfacing after a rough weekend post-chemo....allergic reaction to a shot on Thursday, did not eat for like 3 days. Don't recommend it! Not safe to play hockey at the weight I'm at right now!....

    smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 8:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Meanwhile my Birds are unable to beat the hapless Predators, ten run smack into Mike Richter in a tie v NYR last night. Richter stuffs Jagr on an OT breakaway gee that guy is flexible! But I should hardly complain, my Fave Fowl are 2 pts back of NJ for the Div lead....

    Tripp: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 11:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yeah, that was some save Ricky made last night. J.S. Aubin had a pretty sweet glove save in the OT, too. I thought he was fighting the puck a little after Stevens' so-so goal, but he settled down in a big way.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 11:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yah I actually thought both goals on JS were weak. But in between he made some good saves...

    smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 12:23AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Pens are really not putting the puck in the net the way they ought to. SHould have had a handful v Rangers and Nashville. Kovalev dry lately, Morozov and Lang too. Straka and Jags the only ones scoring.

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 7:03PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey goalies..... Was talking to my friend Blake Robson of the Portland Winterhawks. He might be able to get me some ice time with them. So that would be cool..... Had sort of a pick up game yesterday. We mixed two teams, against two mixed teams. We lost 3-2 in a shootout. I played extremly well. Must have faced at least 40 shots. Tremendous saves all night. It was a lot of fun.

    fourqts: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 8:30PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey all I see the log is availiable again.... WEEEEEEE

    fourqts: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 8:32PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Two fronts for news.... First my league entered the playoffs again with our first game on Sun... Won 5-2 and I played pretty damn well..... One given up on a third rebound and the second on a attempted clearing pass from my stick right to their players tape right in the slot.... But all in all I think I fared well saw about 35 shots and let 2 in.... not a bad night and enough to advance....

    fourqts: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 8:38PM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for my Yotes..... They make a huge take in getting the second line center they have wanted for a while..... Rhicle looked great in his first game... ESPN Vs. Kings.... Should have shot more, but I think they have turned the corner and are ready to play with the big boys.... but The stars tomorrow night... big test.... My prediction Dallas 2 Yotes 4 with an empty netter... Drake, Yolonen, and Sullivan all back.... Maybe the Yotes are trying to make a run for the cup..... As for the trade had to give up a young prospect in Isbister, but with the play of adams and tkchoke would have stayed a third liner for about three years yet..... Plus we swap fourth rounders with the Islanders (improving our position..... Good For the Yotes.... And as I could not get on the log over the last week..... Stlenkov (sp) played well in his first two starts..... Last second winner by Tkchoke in the Joe and A tie in the Keil (SP).... Not a bad trip..... Got Playoff tickets ordered and will enjoy my first whiteout...... LETS GO COYOTES!!!!!!!!

    fourqts: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 8:40PM PST (-0700 GMT)
And the most imortant part of my return..... Arizona thoughts to the Smottmaster.... Thoughts are there and you gave got to be a fighter if you are a chick tender... Hang in there lady........

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 8:58PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Had an awesome game tonight. Unfortunately I lost the cheerio with 2 minutes remaining on a race out to the blue line to clear a turnover. Another guy snagged it out of the air and it was a backwards race that I almost won but I was skating when he released and didn't get much extension. My guys played excellent , those that showed and I had some really good saves. No better feeling than when a team starts gaining steam and everything starts to click. Smott, your in my thoughts and prayers, hang in there goalie :-)

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Mon, Mar 22, 10:50PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey goalies..... I have a question. Do any of you play better when you are focused? Or more laid back. For example. Mike Richter(focus), Martin Brodeur(laid back)..... Like you spend an hour or something just focusing in the locker room, or you are laid back and having fun chatting, etc. I feel I play better when I am more laid back and having fun. Any comments?

    Vile: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 7:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
In my limited experience, I found when I am chatty, my defense gets worried, loses a little confidence, and plays better in front of me. When I act like a wall, they seem to think I am in a zone, and play really weak. Of course, last time, I was in a zone. Made first 12 saves, then let in 4 on the next 12 or so. Made all the hard saves, and let in the really lame.

    C5: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 9:00AM PST (-0700 GMT)
GH, I have often wondered the same thing. Focus? Or laid back? Personally, I think it's focus. I was reading Newsweek's profile of DiMaggio and they were saying how he made everything look so effortless. The guys on his team, however, always said that under the surface, he was SERIOUSLY intense. I think that eve the most laid-back looking goalie is pretty focused.

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 9:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey goalies..... C5----- Sometimes I play extremely well when I'm focused. Others I over focus and play crappy. Yet I think being a little laid back can help keep things fun and not make your brain explode. When you are laid back, playing becomes more fun. Things like that..... It all depends on yourself. Either focused or laid back. Whatever works for you..... Another thing. Does anyone in here have a lot of hockey dreams and goalie related dreams? I have them almost every night. Last night I dreamed a lot about hockey. First I was playing a game at Valley Ice and the other goalie took a players stick and skated all the way to the other blue line and took a slap shot which I stopped, but I was outraged that he did this and the ref didn't call a penalty for him skating over the red line with the puck. I argued with the ref and told him and he said it didn't matter..... Later I dreamed I was practicing with Patrick Roy and Ed Belfour. So that was pretty cool. I also went to Canada in my dream. It was a sweet dream. I am wondering, does any one here sometimes know that they are dreaming? and control what is going on? I do. Also, I can remember everything in my dream in almost perfect detail. Which is cool..... Hell. Even when I woke up I was still arguing about that goalie skating over the redline! I was happy that it was a dream. Or I would have had to open a can of whoop-ass on that jerk for pulling a stunt like that.

    Tripp: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 9:40AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Speaking as the resident laid-back goalie, I think you've got to balance the two. If you're too intense, you're going to be burned out. If you're too laid back, you sometimes get passive. Even guys like Richter and WAH joke with the linesmen and defense, and guys like Fuhr and Brodeur know how much concentration it takes to focus for 60 minutes. Personally, I may laugh and joke, bob my head to the music and sing, or whatever between whistles... but when the puck is in play, it's all intensity. I guess everyone approaches it differently, but I really believe that you need to balance the two.

    Sieve: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 10:13AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Toast, I concur. Played playoff game #2 last night, sorta... the game was called 7 mins. in, other team was playing a suspended player. Sucks in a way but in the playoffs a W is a W. On the other hand he is a major ringer and had scored 2 goals in those 7 mins. hehe...

    Sieve: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 10:13AM PST (-0700 GMT)
woops, I mean Tripp (not toast)!!!

    gbfreeman: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 10:43AM PST (-0700 GMT)
The Red Wings just aquired Wendell Clark for Kevin Hodson and a draft pick. Hope Kevin wasn't banking on good defence! And... The Buffalo Sabres acquired Joe Juneau and a third-round draft pick from the Washington Capitals for Alexei Tezikov (D). The Washington Capitals sent left wing Tom Chorske to the Calgary Flames for future considerations.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 12:14AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi guys. Hmm as for trades here's hoping the Pens can get a tough D without giving up too much....but I doubt it. May just go into the playoffs as is. Need to get Hatcher & Barrasso back soon.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 12:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for focus v laid-back, well allow me an opinion....guys, EVERY GREAT GOALIE IS FOCUSED. I think we've sort of confused "focused" with "intense" as an external type appearance. When you're playing well you're focused, period. You may appear to be very intense, a la Richter, or off on Cloud Nine like Fuhr, but you're focused.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 12:17AM PST (-0700 GMT)
In sports psychology terms this hi-focus state is referred to as (uh oh) "arousal" or optimum arousal if you will, ie the state in which we, er, perform our best.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 12:20AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I think our debate is what does it take to get to that high arousal, a lot of intensity or a lot of relaxation? My answer is, everybody's different, but most folks are somewhere in between. It's rare for an athlete to be at his/her best when extremely wound up, but some can be, like John McEnroe, who could be brilliant in the middle of a tantrum. Equally rare is the athlete who's great when extraordinarily relaxed, such as Bjorn Borg, who was winning WImbledon with a heart rate of like 35.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 12:22AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Pardon the tennis analagies! But anyway it's a good experiment for us all to do....remember how you feel when you're really in the zone - were you wound up like an alarm clock? Or relaxed like Gumby? I think I tend more towards the relaxed, but I can get too lethargic also and make lazy mental errors at times. Think back to your best games and figure out where you were on the intense/relaxed scale when you were, uh, optimally aroused, and performing your best!

    smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 12:23AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...and thanks for the kind thoughts and words guys! I will be back on the ice tonight. Have lost 4-5 pounds unfortunately, but my appetite is coming back. Now I can eat: bread, cheese, spaghetti, and Caesar's Salad. Strangely, only the latter was in my diet before chemo! :-D

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 12:28AM PST (-0700 GMT)
All the talk about "Focus" and "laid back" shows a difference in personality type and will differ from person to person since each handles stress in a different manner. However this talk reminded me of an article I read that deals with this topic somewhat. You can check it out at this button

    Sieve: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 12:35AM PST (-0700 GMT)
hi smott! cant get the whole story but looks like B. Ranford now wears the Winged Wheel also... hmm, why?

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 12:38AM PST (-0700 GMT)
That button doesn't seem to work. Try this button

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 12:40AM PST (-0700 GMT)
OK, that one works like it's supposed to. Read up kiddies and improve your game !! :-)

    gbfreeman: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 4:22PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Chelios, Ulf Samuelson, and Bill Ranford are now Red Wings! Vincent Damphousse is a Shark, Yanic Perreault is a Maple Leaf, , Dale Hunter is an Av, Derek Plante is a Star and Peter Zezel traded to the Mighty Ducks.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 6:16PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I can see some of the trades the wings made as good moves but they must of been smoking crack when they decided on Ranford. I really don't think his past experience is going to add much depth in goal. Anyone else have any thoughts on this one?

    fourqts: . . . . Tue, Mar 23, 8:55PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Damn the wings really got alot of help right at the deadline.... the needed d and they got some D.... The Yotes Pick up neckar (sp) for Jason Doig..... Listning to the Yotes on real audio right now.... 39 seconds left 3-2 Stars....... Six on the ICE...... Two gaols in the last 2 min by the Yotes...... Now 29 seconds..... Great ending........ I'm sure you'll all read about it tomorrow..... As for the focus question.... I'm more the richter type.... Not talking just playing... Yotes Lose 3-2..

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 5:24AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Cdp, my thought on the Ranford deal is that they get a backup goalie with playoff experience for the stretch and also a goalie they can expose to the bluejackets when the time comes. This way if Ozzie goes down or implodes they dont have to rely on Maracle who didnt get his first NHL ice time until mid-this season.

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 5:26AM PST (-0700 GMT)
btw, Ranford is making 3 large bills per year. whew!

    C5: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 5:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Doesn't Ranford have a cup ring???? I could be wrong.

    C5: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 5:30AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Still, Maracle looks like competition for Ozzie in net. Might they do a Flyers act and share the load more?

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 5:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
c5, I think he's sporting two rings. Maracle does have good game, but to go with him in the playoffs? I think Scotty would be crazy... then again if there is one coach that could get away with it...

    Papillon: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 6:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5, I just checked oout your website. I love the big NHL pictures, I've got one of the WAH ones as my wallpaper at work.

    snowman: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 6:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
detroit goes forthe "D"..... this is what they needed most.... to me the Wings stock went up for this years final dash at the cup. It should be very interesting PO season

    Goal35: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 6:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yup, Ranford won 16 in playoffs with Edm to get his cup ring

    Vile: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 8:33AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Now, everyone knows I am a Stars fan... but I am really not impressed by the Detroit trade. I was surprised by the moving of Chelios at all, but here's my take.

    Vile: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 8:48AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Detroit is DESPARATE. Let's make a poker analogy. In 5 card draw, you draw 4 cards, you weren't dealt a very good hand. I always liked Chelios, but the only thing people really mention is how many minutes he plays. He has a lot of heart and competetiveness, but he is 37 yrs old... I am not saying Detroit shouldn't have picked him up, but I don't think he is the D god some make him out to be. Wendal Clark... I like him too, but I will predict his demise in a series against Colorado. He is a little too fragile to stand up to the physical abuse the Detroit/Colorado games generate. Ulf Samuelson? Maybe next year. Ranford... I guess they wanted an experienced playoff goalie.

    Vile: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 8:50AM PST (-0700 GMT)
On the whole, nothing Detroit did yesterday scares me at all. I am impressed with Colorado. That team has some things to fear, and I think they want it more than Detroit.

    Vile: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 8:52AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Thanks for the package JAKE. I think those will work nicely.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 9:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm it seems that the Wings have mortgaged a bit of the future to try to get 3 in a row. Wouldn't call it desperate exactly but maybe they feel they're as close to a 3rd Cup now as they'll ever be and need that extra help on D to get them through, even if it is long in tooth D....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 9:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I was surprised with the Ranford deal. It says to me that the Wings are a lot less confident in Ozzie than they're letting on.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 9:52AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...and did anybody see poor Chelios sniffling at his pres conference. That guy didn't want to leave Chitown.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 9:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for moi, got shellacked big-time last night by the best team in the league. 15-2 on about 60+ shots. Geez was I beat. This chemo thing is like playing after you've had a bad stomach flu. Weak and tired the whole time. Sucking gatorade like a fish after the game.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 9:56AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Also last night, one of my poor D blocked a screamer with his, um, cup. I must say it is hard for me to relate exactly but I did feel for the guy. He was down for like 5 minutes making the most painful-sounding noises. All my guys looked stricken, they finally carried him to the bench and he lay there for 2 periods.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 10:08AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...on the plus side, nobody screened me for the rest of the night! :-D

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 10:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Desperate? naa, just doing all they can. I'm excited about the changes around here. Tonite's game will be interesting for sure with all the new numbers skating around. I dont think the Wings mortgaged too much of their future. It's not like Chelly is a rental, they'll get a couple years out of him. Yes, old, but just look at the Murph. Vile, you may be right about Wendell not surviving a real physical series. Thats all they need, another multi-million $ spectator (see U. Krupp). ugh... The more i think about the Ranford deal, the more I like it too. Sorry about the long wind....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 10:52AM PST (-0700 GMT)
    Hiya Sieve...

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 10:58AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm you guys have higher opinions of Ranford than I do....

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 11:03AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I agree, Sieve. It's not like the Rangers giving up Doug Weight, Matty Norstrom and Tony Amonte here. Now THAT was mortgaging the future for the present! Chelios and Samuelsson give them two more mean, physical defensemen to throw at Dallas and Colorado. Eriksson looks like he'll be pretty good. But from what I've seen in person and in the AHL, Maracle looks better than Hodson. I still don't have much faith in Osgoat, but he's not going to have to stop 40-50 shots a night like Kolzig did last year. These playoffs should be very interesting.

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 11:04AM PST (-0700 GMT)
BTW... Hang in there smottsie! Glad to hear you're back in net.

    C5: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 11:38AM PST (-0700 GMT)
No one mentions MaCoun. I think he's awesome. Personally, I think the trades are super, super smart. Clark? Chelly? Let's not forget the mental part of the game, here. These guys want their names on the cup, and they feel they deserve it. Bowman's not Bob Clark. He's not some schmuck who chooses players from a spreadsheet. Personally, I predict you'll see Ozzie all through Detroit's playoffs. If they were going to swap, they'd be swapping now in the run up. I am also unsue that Ozzie could stop 40-50 shots a game, but how often are you going to make it to the cup while allowing those kinds of shots, anyway? Washington did, and they got swept. Bowman's no idiot, and he's smart enough to know that a goalie can carry you to the finals (think Richard Brodeur) but never to that 16th game. That's it.

    C5: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 11:40AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Still, this whole trade concept thing sucks. Teams should... I dunno. Basically, Detroit might win it three times, but it'll be three different sets of wings... Hardly the '84 Oilers.

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 11:40AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Okay, my take on the trades. Detroit is obviously loading up for the Cup, and I think they are much stronger for the next six weeks or so. Those who think Clark will fold...newsflash - he scores big goals in big games. That is all he does anymore, but that kind of guy is gold in the playoffs. As for picking up Ranford, strictly insurance. As for Osgood, like him or hate him, until he costs Detroit a cup, ya can't knock the guy. Soft goals or not, fact is he gave Detroit enough to win it last year and you can't argue with that.

    C5: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 11:41AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smottie, I played Monday night and was on fire. I let in a few softies but made some stops that were insane. I was playing the puck EVERYWHERE, even hitting the glass and making it out of the zone (!!!), and got burned on the 2nd goal while way out of the net. My D was sliding around making stops. It was so cool to have their support. Remember, tell your guys that when they slide, it's one hand over their face, another over the groin!

    C5: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 11:43AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Toast, I agree. Moog wrote an article here in town about the ins and outs of scouting, what he's learning, etc., and probably the most interesting thing about a goalie is not consistency, but his big game potential. Some goalies, Moog said, "let in goals, but help their teams win games" (article in front of me). I only half grokked this statement. What does that mean to you?

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 11:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Actually, I think the trade deadline should be back in February sometime to stop the rent a player thing...as for sleeper teams, I have to admit in the East Buffalo scares me. A lot. Everyone talks about Philly, NJ, even Ottawa, yet no one mentions the Sabres. But with a healthy Dom, who just had a few weeks off with a groin pull, be mighty careful. In the West - I am going to go with the Avs for now. Just a hunch, but I have a feeling that team is ready to make some noise. Proven playoff goaltending (sorry Dallas and Phoenix), and oodles of talent. I think Hunter will be big in the dressing room.

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 11:50AM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for Detroit going for three, I think if they really want a place in hockey history, you gotta do it. Three in a row is a mean feat, some good teams never did that. For example, Flyers of the 70s, the Bruins in the early 70s, even Edmonton did not do three. Win one Cup - after a few years you get lost in the shuffle of past winners. Win two, okay a good team. Win three...elite. Four...dynasty, and five...ah...Habs. Darn.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 11:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for Chelios and Clark wanting their name on the cup, Doesn't Chelios have his on their already (Montreal)? Just wondering. Well, with 1 game remaining, my team is 7-2 and in first. Last game will be for seeding (Could finish anywhere from 1rst to 3rd). Team has been together three seasons and is really starting to play "D" intelligently. They are starting to develop a 6th sense for location of teammates. 1 game tonight and 2 tomorrow.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 12:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yes I thought Chelios got a ring w/Habs.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 12:47AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yep Toast is right Ozzie hasn't cost them a Cup, yet. But Wings don't have the margin of superiority over other teams now that they enjoyed last year. In fact they'll need goaltending to eleveate them. Should be an interesting test for Oz.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 1:22PM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5 as for Moog's remark, I think he meant it's not really how many goals you let in, it's which ones. And which saves you make, when. A couple big saves at the right time can lift the team and help it overcome even a soft goal or two. And even if you're like 2.0 GA, if you let in a real stinker just when they need you to be a wall, well....

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 1:25PM PST (-0700 GMT)
sure, Ozzie has his lapses occaisionally, but who doesnt? I think wingos CAN ride him all the way in, because when he does have a bad game, he seems to be able to shrug it off unlike many other playoff suspect goalies with whom he is being lumped. And when the Wiz is on I love to watch that lightning glovehand!

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 1:27PM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for Detroit, they were good enough last year that Oz didn't matter. He was letting in fly balls from mid-field and you just knew they would win the game anyway. Not so this year. But maybe he'll toughen up, we'll see. If not, I doubt RAnford will get it done either.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 1:27PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yep I will say that Oz is able to shrug off stuff that would have other guys slashing their wrists....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 1:28PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Personally I'd prefer he didn't let in the 80-footer to begin with, but you have to admire his resilience!

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 1:34PM PST (-0700 GMT)
hi smott! You may be right about Ranford but if Ozzie goes down and you are Scotty wouldnt you take a little comfort looking down the bench and seeing two rings on Bill R's fingers rather than only seeing peachfuzz under Norm's mask?

    fourqts: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 8:41PM PST (-0700 GMT)
C5 I think I'm the only one who got the grock comment.... Heinlin is tough.... As for Ozbad making a run.... like I said before.... I think they won last year in spite of ozbad.... And the moves they made at the deadline (although the players are elderly) may just give the wings the muscle on D to win in spite of him again..... I think ozzie is an average goalie.... not one to steal a series... But with the scoring and great D the wings can bring... I think their stock rose a bunch yeaterday

    deke: . . . . Wed, Mar 24, 8:55PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I've got to weigh in with those who think that Wings have to be odds on to threepeat(without permission of Pat Riley) Just can't argue with addition of Chelios and Clark, Sammy too, but with his busted wheel no telling when he's back. As for mortgaging the future, whatever it takes to win a first cup in 54 years is ok by me. By the way, heard tonight that Dom is in Germany seeing a groin specialist.

    Papillon: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 5:17AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Here is my entry for shallacking of the week...last night we played the local development league team, three lines plus, five veterans, the rest are a mixture of juniors (17+ years old) and 1 year semi-pro players, apparently its an annual thing, the dev team plays all the rec and university teams. Anyway, they beat us 16-6, they treated it like a scrimmage, we treated it like a war. I played ok, only one goal I was really mad at, shot from the blue line along the ice, straight through the five hole, due to my stick coming off the ice, doh!

    Papillon: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 5:25AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I got a new pair of skates during last summer, I have been getting them sharpened at the same place ever since, I have gotten then sharpend about every 20 hours of use. Yesterday in the shop, the guy tells me that my blades are bent, and that its a common problem with _big_ skates (I take a 10 1/2, I am 6' 11/2", 203 lbs). Now I am pretty clueless about this kind of stuff, so can anyone shed any light about what might have caused this. Things that I have thought of are a) improper skating technique b) product defect c) happened during sharpening d) caused by my size....Anyhow he straightened them out as much as he said he could, I looked carefully and I could see a little bend, but noithing to write home about...so I am wondering what I can do to stop this from happening again and how this will effect my skating.

    Papillon: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 5:28AM PST (-0700 GMT)
playing again on saturday night, its my first home game, and its against the team that first I started training with. I also have the remains of a cold, so fingers crossed that play ok.

    C5: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 6:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ozzie has proven that he steps it up a notch in the playoffs, IMHO. The only thing I wish he'd do better is find the puck in heavy action in his zone. The rest of the time I enjoy watching him. I don't know who's going to win it, but Detroit, Dallas and the Avs will be fun to watch. Toast, however, brings up a good point: The upsets last year weren't a fluke, necessarily, but may harken to more upsets like them this year, too. Could these rent-a-player teams find themselves at the mercy of teams who have nothing to play for but pure passion for hockey? Yeek. Better sign off THAT thought before I sound like Don Cherry.

    JAKE: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 8:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
VILE: I'm glad that the stuff looks like it will work for you.

    Vile: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 9:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I still think Detroit is disparate. They HAD to make those moves. They looked good last night, admittedly, but I will reserve judgement until the first round of the playoffs.

    Vile: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 9:18AM PST (-0700 GMT)
The Stars added a little frosting to their cake, but I think Theo and Dale are huge additions to Colorado.

    Fourqts: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 11:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
So now that the deadline has come and past..... Who are you all picking to make noise in the Playoffs and also come out of the east and West.

    Vile: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 12:25AM PST (-0700 GMT)
By the way, I am unclear on the seating for the playoffs. I heard something about the teams being reseated after the first round based on records. So while Phx might be 4th at the opening, they could be reseated higher later...

    z-man: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 2:01PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Last night I got a penalty in my roller hockey game for delay of game. I went out to near the top of the faceoff circle to intercept a breakaway pass, and as I tried to stop, I fell on my ass. I managed to hook the puck over and cover it just before the winger got to it. The ref said I only had from the faceoff dots back to cover it. What weird rules! It is because they play two 22 min halves, running clock. Is that standard in roller hockey? Still won 6-4. I find it hard to transition to roller skates after 4 nights of ice hockey.

    fourqts: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 2:50PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Vile the NHL reseeds the brackets after each round.... Therefore if the 8th seed beats the first seed, then that 8th seed has to play the highest seed surviving the first round..... The Idea I think is to ease the trip to the finals for higher seeded teams (and therefore increase the value of a high finishing position)..... But I'm not so sold on giving the division winners the top three seeds.... Maybe just guaranteeing the divisional winners playoff spots. IE the east's problem currently with the third seeded team having like the 8th beft record in the east.

    fourqts: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 2:51PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Z-man I've heard of the same rule and I think it applies in both roller and Ice.

    z-man: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 5:14PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I don't know how consistent the rules are, in my ice hockey league I can cover all the way to the blue line, with no penalty (and I often do - a sad statement about my defense!)

    smott: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 6:28PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yes I believe there is "re-seeding" after each round of the playoffs, the highest seed plays lowest etc. This confuses me because it's so unlike my other sport, tennis!

    smott: . . . . Thu, Mar 25, 6:30PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yikes, FIVE goals in the first period with my Pens v NJ....Marty really fighting with the puck. Barnaby scores his first. Is it just me or are the Devils lacking some discipline at home?....

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Mar 26, 6:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
morning all... And so another season of Firecats hockey comes to a disappointing end... Here's a helpful tip - don't choose game three of your playoffs for your team to play their worst game in two years. 9-2 debacle, ugh.

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Mar 26, 6:18AM PST (-0700 GMT)
on the other hand I was PIM's leader last night. 5+2+2. Ya, baby!!!

    : . . . . Fri, Mar 26, 8:58AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Okay, seeding, not seating. So, here is my senario question. If all top 4 seeds in the west adavnce past the first round. Yotes stay 4th seed right? So it would be Avs vs Wings, Yotes vs Stars? re-seeding means there are no brackets, not that Coyotes could be re-seeded above detroit in the second round because of their better record.

    Vile: . . . . Fri, Mar 26, 8:59AM PST (-0700 GMT)
    oops, me

    smott: . . . . Sat, Mar 27, 7:00AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yep Vile believe that is correct. If top four advance, 1 v 4, 2 v 3.

Whatever. I have officially accepted a job in Manhattan. Tripp, you're a genius. I also heard about the league in Chelsea Piers, which would only be a quick uptown train from work, and I could leave my equipment at the office, if I wanted to. Do you happen to have any more info on that league?? I have to have my fix!! And I will be selling my car...

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Sun, Mar 28, 10:09AM PST (-0700 GMT)
No mouth piece here either. If your wearing a mask I really don't see any reason to wear one unless it's a rule. If you wear a helmet cage combo I could see the benifits of a mouth piece. The mouth piece is more for those who expect to receive sudden impacts ie: body contact, checking. Everyone here will probablly agree with me, a goalie may get run into on a few rare ocassions but it's not the norm. Plus try yelling to your team mates with a mouth piece in, it comes out all scrammbled. If you feel comfortable using a mouth piece then stick with it.

Carpe De Puck----- Goalies should be allowed not to wear a mouth piece if they don't want to. In my league goalies need to wear them, but I don't and the refs don't care..... Does anyone in here curve their own sticks? I like to have a little extra curve in my sticks for better puck handling. Remember JOEY? Once he put a 5-6 inch curve in his stick. I couldn't believe it. Once I took a shot with it and the puck almost went straight up in the air..... Any comments about curving your own sticks? ..... Another thing. Remember when I told you guys about Marc Aercio? The guy who played for the Blackhawks(NHL) about eight minutes as a goalie? Well I did some research about his past teams(Portland Winterhawks, Portland Jr. Bucs) and I never found anything about him. I look at the all-time record of players/stats in the NHL and couldn't find him. When I talk to him about his stint with the Blackhawks he makes it sound odd. Like that he faced 38 shots in eight minutes or something. Like his story changes. I am wondering if he ever did play in the NHL or whatever. He is a pretty nice guy. What should I do? Confront him about my suspicion? Any comments?

Thanks, everyone! I appreciate the well-wishing. Seive, I stayed at the Grammercy Hotel Thursday & Friday. Kind of an oddity to me, very old. Walked all over NYC, bought some sunglasses, etc. Can tell that real estate will be super expensive and so will food, but clothes and transportation-- especially since I'm selling my car, won't be. Played my old team on Friday night, we shelled them 11-2. I only faced 20 shots, so I should have had the shut out, but I was getting cold from a lack of action toward the end of the second period, and they scored two soft goals right before the buzzer.

well, we lost in the semi-finals to the #1 team sat night, 5-4. a couple of bounces and we would have beat them, we missed alot of open nets. But we must have taken alot out of them cuz they lost the championship 4-2, they didnt look anything like the team we played the night before.. :) the #2 team won, was nice cuz i had subbed for them during the regular season and got 3 wins with them, one of them an A game which was the only B team to win against an A team all season.

Well, my Sat team opened with a 6-0 win our semis. Now off next week due to Easter, a long layoff between games. However, my Tuesday team opens tomorrow. Finally, my other team got swept in the finals two straight, so one team is over. Winter is winding down, but have two teams lined up for the summer league at this time.

    C5: . . . . Mon, Mar 29, 7:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
OK, I have to say this, especially after watching the Wings/Flyers game the other night. I've hesitated to say this for about a month, now, hoping someone else would bring it up, but I just don't like the way Beezer is playing in goal for the Flyers. I just don't think he's doing a good job. Yesterday's performance was a big case in point. First goal, a puck he could see all the way, and he can't glove it, instead bobbling it into the air where it's batted in for a goal. It's been things like this all along, in almost every Flyers game I've seen. Beez makes good stops when he's called on, but lately, he's gotten boring to watch. He's not playing with any creativity, I think. Anyone agree/disagree?

    C5: . . . . Mon, Mar 29, 7:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Tripp, oh boy! I like the sound of "bring your game." And Toast, is Easter on the same day in Canada??

    z-man: . . . . Mon, Mar 29, 7:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yesterday, in practice, I got hit in the head 7 times, twice by the same guy, and my teammates wonder whats wrong? The captain asked me why I was moving aside when a certain player shot, and I responded by rebounding his next shot right to his head off my stick, and it hit him in the chest. C5, about NY, Park Slope is a good area to live in for a reasonable rent, but are you aware that it is in Brooklyn? Only an F-train ride from Manhattan... I don't live there anymore but I grew up there, before I ever played hockey though. Another cheap place to live is Astoria, in Queens, but I would choose Park Slope in Brooklyn or the neighborhoods around there, or farther into Queens like Flushing or Bayside.

    Fourqts: . . . . Mon, Mar 29, 12:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Z-man here is the answer if the guy keeps head hunting in warmups and in practices...... Let him shoot into an empty net....... Remember you control the warmup (unless you like others dictating how you move when you are not completely stretched and or ready for say Deke's.....) If they are youngsters, I generally take them aside and let them know how they should help a goalie get warm.... I like Slappers from outside into the body to start, then Wristers to the corners, then have my skaters start in the corner and skate out in an arc then shoot, then if i have time I'll let them deke and of try redirecting slappers from the piont..... When I first started, and Let them just go crazy in warmups, I pulled something in my back and ached for weeks... now they listen or shoot at an empty net... I've pissed a couple of people off, but they generally apologise later and realize that I need to warm up my way just like they need to warm up their way... The catch being that I need shooters to warm up.... They do not need a tender (but a tender is nice)

    z-man: . . . . Mon, Mar 29, 1:11PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Thanks for the tips, 4qts, I tried to tell them I like outside slaps to start, and if they are good, they can breakaway at the end, but they don't get it. They think I am lazy during practice because I don't go down like I would in a game, I guess I need to be more assertive in laying down the law. BTW, where in Phx do you live? I used to live on 44 St / Ind Sch Rd when I lived in the valley.

    Fourqts: . . . . Mon, Mar 29, 1:23PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'm at 7th street and Greenway..... And your dorks (I mean skaters) will get it if you let them shoot at nothing, if they are bad... Have one of them suit up just once.... The best cantidate is the captain..... then warm him up wrong.... you will get the greatest amount of respect once this happens..... Because the captain will be yelling at the team to "warm you up right".... I play with an ex major junior player on my team..... and I bitched to him a little.... now he rides the rest of the team if i drop out of net when they are warming up..... He is a great help (and it also is a plus that he is 6'3" and about 225...

    fourqts: . . . . Mon, Mar 29, 3:07PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Tournament time in phoenix..... And last night we went out to the eventual winners.... 7-6..... Alot of two on ones where my d would not stop the pass across.... They were making me feel pretty dumb in the net at the begining of the second period where they scored three quico on back door breakaway passes..... After the opening minutes of the second, We shut them down allowing only two hard slappers that came in off of the bars the rest of the game.... We pulled within 0ne with five and a half minutes left, but my o had no more go.... Had a few huge saves down the stretch to keep it at a one goal lead..... The entire opposing team said i played a great game.... I don't feel so good about it as we lost..... But the new season is coming......

    gbfreeman: . . . . Mon, Mar 29, 5:36PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Whooo is my team pissed at me! Last night we got outshot 41-12 and lost 6-1. That really isn't so bad (grrr), however, at least 3 of the goals were caused by them trying to clear the zone by backhanding across the middle. When I commented on this, they responded with "Worry about your own job". So, the next time they made a horrendous play (we were down 5-1 at the time), I stepped aside and let the guy have the empty net. They started bitching and what could I do? Respond with "WORRY ABOUT YOUR JOB!". Needless to say, relations are strained to say the least.

    Papillon: . . . . Tue, Mar 30, 4:07AM PST (-0700 GMT)
played pickup last night, highlight was that a Great Britain under 21 player turned up, he skated rings around everyone, I faced about 40 shots, 6 got by me, and 5 of those were from Mr. GB U21. But I admit that I really enjoyed playing against him for the experience.

    Papillon: . . . . Tue, Mar 30, 4:08AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I have been getting burned recently with a particular kind of shot and I cannot work out how to stop them. Basically its shots catcher side, above elbow level, with the puck real close to my arm. It feels too close into the arm to use the catcher. Does it sound like I am off my angle, and that I should alter the angle and get it in the upper body?

    smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 30, 6:42AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Papillon sounds like you need to get familiar with the "chicken wing" save. It's an awkward spot in between glove and body but raising the elbow can maybe make that stop for you.

    C5: . . . . Tue, Mar 30, 6:43AM PST (-0700 GMT)
GB, right on! I'm behind you on this. It's not that the other team isn't supposed to shoot, but they're supposed to NOT let the other team just WALK IN on you!!

    C5: . . . . Tue, Mar 30, 6:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yes, Smottie's right, that save is much more effective because of its quickness. Higher-end players will just shoot it through you though if they're far enough out. It's usually a good move just for those close-in roofers where you're already in the 'fly.

    Sieve: . . . . Tue, Mar 30, 6:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Gbf, let me get this straight... they are pissed at you??? Sounds like a dense bunch to me. I've been tempted to leave the net open a couple times on some of my teams worse nights but cant make myself do it. Usually when I get fed up with them I'll start goofing off to save my sanity, i.e. skating out to the blue line to play the puck. Doesnt win games but what the hey, if you're getting blown out you might as well have fun...

    : . . . . Tue, Mar 30, 7:52AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Played my first league game last night, won 5-1. I faced only 10 shots while the other guy took 30. I liked the win, but I would have rather seen more action myself. Lost shut out bid in my first game ever with 6 minutes left in the game on a rebound I almost had. Oh well, a win is a win.

    fourqts: . . . . Tue, Mar 30, 8:04AM PST (-0700 GMT)
GB.... I've been known to do just that but it is generally when my team is winded and they start camping at the centerline and yelling for a pass..... Then, if they get lippy..... I just that i saw that they were so tired that the only way to give them enough time to get to the bench and get a rest is to either freze the puck or allow a goal... And the percentages of freezing are much lower than those of an empty netter........ therefore, inorder to compensate for their inability to change quickly when they are tired... they forced me into doing it.... I don't think anyone understood my logic at first but i had no arguments....

I'm ready to see the stuff now, but the HOutfitters site is not complete yet.. . and no word on the Battram site.... Must be top secret

No worries, shutouts are fascist. It amused me tho. The stat man was very generous. I touched the puck, at most 7 seven times, and I wouldn't call half of them saves. But a 90% save is nice. I have no illusions as to my abilities after one game. If I had faced 30 shots like the other goalie, I wouldn't have fared as well as he did. Still, I played my angles well. My wife thought I couldn't take a compliment well, because I began explaining to her all the things I know I did wrong (Safe bet there are several I don't know), but I think you must be critical of yourself within reason.

    Tripp: . . . . Tue, Mar 30, 11:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Just my $0.02 -- I can sympathize with ya Gbf... but I have never, and will never, give anyone a free goal. I mean, I've mishandled the puck and given up some cheap ones. Who hasn't? But no matter how snotty and whiny my teammates get, I try to hang in there. Still....letting you get shelled with 41 shots, and throwing sloppy plays... they should be more angry at themselves and quit snapping at you. It sucks when a team lets the goalie get toyed with just because they're feeling sorry for themselves. Hopefully you guys can let bygones be bygones and put it together for your next game.

4qts, I am going to Phoenix at the end of April, where is the best place to skate (ie public skate)? I will be in Tempe, Scottsdale area, not up north as you are. If you have any games around May 1 I would go to see your Battram pads as I am curious what they are like.

    fourqts: . . . . Tue, Mar 30, 3:23PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Z Man I'll bw playing roller on the night of May the 2nd but it will be across town from tempe scottsdale.... As for the best place to skate.... the question is roller or ice.... for roller and a conditioning skate, I suggest the Indian bend wash park.... which is about 10 miles of two lane concrete with underpasses for the roads.... I try to get out and do a 15 mile jaunt each saturday morning.... If you want to skate on the Ice then your choices are Oceanside Ice arean (button or the coyotes Ice den in north scottsdale. The Coyotes place is nice!!!! but more dollars. I'm trying to play alot of open hockey there but it is mostly afternoons.... and i get there when I can so cannot promise a time to be there with my job. Just Drop me an email letting me know when you are in town and we'll work something out to see my pads. fourqts@primenet.com

Hi guys...gearing up for playoffs this weekend! Finally feeling a tad more up to par though I can't kick this (*&(& sinus infection.....will go to some p/u hockey on Friday and then hope for the best Saturday first round in C.....

    smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 31, 7:27AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Meanwhile GEEZ but my Pens are playing horrible, blow a 3-0 lead to Ottawa. Last 3 games they have blown 2 3rd period leads, and now this. Constantine questions their will in the paper. Uh oh. We could be gettign ready for another playoff fade like last year. On the other hand, if this keeps up, they will maybe wind up in the coveted 6th spot v Carolina!...

    fourqts: . . . . Wed, Mar 31, 8:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Look at those Yotes last night..... Score six in the first period and even a power play goal...... Is this a sign of the offense to come????? I think not but six in a period was fun to watch....

Anyone see the shot Tabaracci took last night? Snap shot dead smack in the throat. Gave him a pretty nasty bruise. He's lucky that's all he got! He hung in and finished the game though.

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Wed, Mar 31, 10:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey goalies..... I received two sticks yesterday from Brian Gee. One of the sticks is a "curtis curve". I have a question about that stick. Why is the end of the stick curved? You know, where the knop is. It curves up.

    C5: . . . . Wed, Mar 31, 10:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Uh... Empty netters, 4q? I tend to develop hearing loss when it's 5-2 and my team is yelling at me, with 45 seconds left, to come off the ice for the extra man... :D

    C5: . . . . Wed, Mar 31, 10:56AM PST (-0700 GMT)
GH, I used to use that stick. Just wait. You'll find out when you go paddle down on a save. That curve is perfect for picking the puck off someone's stick.

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Mar 31, 11:35AM PST (-0700 GMT)
yeah, that is if the heal on the CC lasts long enough for you to find out. I think their durability is not too good.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Apr 1, 7:48AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm I think Toastie usest he CC and likes it a lot. Very good for the paddle-down save.

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Apr 1, 10:52AM PST (-0700 GMT)
hi smott! I dont think CC's are bad sticks, in my experience they just dont last long. I'm currently using a Hespeler that very light and wearing like its made of steel. also if you are not the greatest puckhandler in the world (like me), forget the CC...

    Tripp: . . . . Thu, Apr 1, 11:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Those sticks were just too weird for me. I had trouble poke checking. I dunno. They were definitely easy to pick up and put the paddle down though. Some guys swore by them. Personally, I used to love the old Helite III's. Those things took a beating. I'm still using Helite IV's and the Koho 500's.

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Apr 1, 1:14PM PST (-0700 GMT)
hi tripp, i'm having your old 5500 re-altered a bit. still working good...

    fourqts: . . . . Thu, Apr 1, 1:24PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'm with tripp in that I just think they look too weird.... I'll stick with my regular sticks (Reactor 5's) but am forced to use a TPS stick currently as Bauer seems to have basically shut down its operations to change over to '99 products and nobody in AZ has any reactor 5's..... But a stick question.... I know other companies make them but bauer is going to offer a 100% composite stick next year (hasek using right now) supposed to be super light and strong.... Sounds interesting to me... but what good is a light stick when you are hacking at ankles.... The TPS is heavy compared to my old reactor sticks (which i left at the rink last week like a moron).... Maybe those who like to hang by the crease will think again after a good whack.

Does anyone else have probs wit this page when it 1st loads up? It's like the text is wider than the box and I have to scroll to the right to read sentences. After I click on chat though it goes back to normal. Anyone have the same on their end?

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Thu, Apr 1, 2:35PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I liked CC at first and the curve does work. The curved knob on the end came in handy when I had to pick the stick up and it did send the puck away from the net if it rolled off the end. But alas, the heel of the stick is more fragile than Tommy B and lasted about as long as he did this season. I ended up fiberglassing it myself to use as a warm up stick but now it sits in the corner since I don't care for the lie of it anymore. For clearing the crease out I'll take my Louisville TPS gold any day, thats one serious piece of lumber but doesn't really feel heavy if thats possible. I love my Heaton Helite IV's but they don't do much good when you whack ankles.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Thu, Apr 1, 2:48PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Had a Mike Vernon save the other night. Guy took a pass right on my doorstep and fired it right as I reached over for it. Woman in the score box sounded the horn and the ref pointed at the goal and blew the whistle. I stood up and raised the big mitten in the air and to the amazement of all that little black bastard known as Puck was inside and I let him fall to the ice with the biggest shit eating grin on my face. That really took the wind out of the other teams sails and pumped my team. I ended up having a really good night and made some outstanding saves but the rest of the team was a little off and allowed people to park on my door step...you know the rest. I felt like I had a good game though at the end of the night. I decided to take a few days off since I've been playing 5 days a week for awhile now and even though I'm playing strong I know I need a rest or else a big let down is bound to come crashing down. Don't you just love Hockey guys? :-)

    fourqts: . . . . Thu, Apr 1, 3:27PM PST (-0700 GMT)

    z-man: . . . . Thu, Apr 1, 4:06PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Last night in my roller hockey game, I was standing on my head to keep my team in the game. We lost 5-4 and were outshot 55-15. There was a defenseman on my team that stood in front of the net about 5 feet and I could beat him to a loose puck, and often had to, to keep the opponent from getting it. I wish it wasn't so hot playing roller hockey, there is no ice to spray on your face, and then there is the problem of trying to skate over puddles of your own sweat and water bottle dribble. We had a penalty shot with about 0:30 left but missed it, was a frustrating outcome. It is hard for me to transition from 4 nights of ice hockey to roller hockey, and the side to side is hard on my ankles. Not to mention I fall - a lot! (especially when I try to skate out and puck handle)

CdP, great job!! Anyone-- ANYONE-- that makes a Mike Vernon save is OK in my book! I made JUST that same save in an away intermural hockey game in high school. We were playing with these leather and felt pucks in gymnasiums. I was in goal, wearing cricket pads. Scrum in front of the net, puck gets lifted up... I couldn't see it.. I just followed the heel of the stick up with my glove. The stick went up and into the net, the home crowd went wild, and I just stood up and calmy presented the thing-- I dare not call it a puck-- to the ref. Ha!

    C5: . . . . Thu, Apr 1, 7:13PM PST (-0700 GMT)
SPEAKING of Mike Vernon, I have no idea who out there is enjoying the goalie picture gallery, but I sure get a kick out of collecting all these images. With me stressing out and changing jobs, I've been lax at collecting the images. Well, today's the day! I added SO many images. Roy, Brodeur, Aubin, Hackett, about 5 COOL Richter shots, Shields, Cloutier, Dafoe, fitzpatrick, fuhr, hasek, joseph, about 3 khabby ones, hebert, kidd, osgood, maracle, salo (one in islanders, one in Edmonchuck) tabby, turek, terreri, vokoun, and one mystery NHL goalie, the new Islanders guy. Also, the gallery was getting too big, so it's split up, now, for us modem people. Enjoy! And please, let me know if you enjoy the gallery, becuase I have no idea if the pictures are popular. Thanks!

Some entertaining college hockey today. Maine's goalie was awesome. He really kept them in there. Once again my Oilers get blasted in a game they had to have. They'd make easy prey for Dallas in the first round anyway, but I still think there's nothing better than playoff hockey, and I want my team to be there

Had a great ice pickup game yesterday..... Left a few guys with their eyes bugged out and theirs jaws on the floor.... Awesome skate save on a two on none..... just enough to make the shot miss.... then a couple of ROY glove saves way out on the angle slowly raising the glove after the save.... Liking Ice alot better than roller. Ice seems to be more strain on the knees and hips... roller more ankles and groin. Hope the old knees hold up cause it sure is fun

my gosh... Pittsburgh goalies continue to drop like flies. J.S. Aubin... who stole my mask design, by the way >:-( ... goes out with a strained hammy. Barrasso still hurt... Skudra not 100%, but can play... smottsie still under the weather... maybe my pal Craig Hillier will get a look? Also... Byron Dafoe now leads the league in shutouts. One ahead of Dom. I love it

    deke: . . . . Sat, Apr 3, 9:38PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Wow! Some great goaltending on both sides in the NCAA final. UNH goalie absolutely stood on his head in overtime. One second save sprawling like Dom and stops the shot with the back of his leg. UMaine clearly outplayed them though in the extra period to take the win 3-2. Very entertaining hockey.

Yes indeed Pgh goalies are going down fast. Aubin has outplayed Skudra and deservedly got the start but he's out with the ham. Hillier realled, TB still out. Hatcher & Slegr returnign tonight but Pens are really sliding bad. Of course they could wind up in the 6th spot which would be good. Except the Flyers seem to be playign even worse and may beat themt o it!

    gbfreeman: . . . . Mon, Apr 5, 8:57PM PST (-0700 GMT)
3 games tomorrow. First one actually matters. Playing for #1 seed in the playoffs and a first round matchup with a team we consistently dominate. Second game is for 2nd or 3rd seed, which really doesn't matter since we all have home rink advantage. Third game at 10:10 PM!!! Meaningless. We are locked in as the #4 seed regardless. Actually glad to be there, The #1 seed is undefeated with 2 ties. Yep, the two times they played us. We got our butts kicked by the #2 and #3 seeds all season long. 4 of 4 teams made playoffs. 4th team (defending champs) started 1-4 and had to win 4 of our last 5 to make the playoffs. So what are we doing. Taking the moral victory and forfeiting the playoff game.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Mon, Apr 5, 9:01PM PST (-0700 GMT)
The league we play in (roller) requires us to pay $75 dollars for each round of the playoffs (single elimination). The Championship is gratis. Since we have had only 4 skaters and moi showing up we feel that $15 dollars to play each of 2 rounds of playoffs is kind of steep and we're not gonna do it. My three other teams have better turnouts, one less round of playoffs, and haven't won a title yet. Three playoff games on Thursday. Luckily I have Friday off to recuperate. Later. Smott, keep fighting P.S. Finally got some pics of myself in my Battram gear. You can see it at button

Gbfreeman----- You play against a team called "Who's your daddy"? Isn't that a trip!..... C5----- I used the "curtis curve" yesterday. It was good for stopping pucks, but poke checking and shooting it wasn't good at all.....(everyone)..... The coach of the Chicago Freeze of the NAHL(Jr.A) is sending me a try-out information packet. Just want to know if I've done everything I can do? I have a gut feeling that my stance/style isn't going to work or something. A weird feeling, like I should be playing better. Maybe it's because I had a bad practice yesterday(Kinda hard to play good when all your coach runs are breakaway and 2 on 0 drills). Although I am not much of a practice person. It's hard to get focused for a practice. That game is where I shine my brightessed. Goaltending is 90% mental..... Is there any "tricks of the trades" I can use? Like things I can do off the ice to improve reflexes and eye hand coordination. I play video games, a lot of street hockey, etc. What else can I do..... I want to be in the best condition for the try-outs. I have four years left of Juniors left. So I need to act fast..... I am looking to improve my fundementals of the game. How can I do that? I need some good drills that my coach can run in practice that will improve my game a lot. Thanks.

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Mon, Apr 5, 9:57PM PST (-0700 GMT)
One other thing..... What do you think they will run in practice? Besides a scrimmage what kind of drills will that run? So I can be prepared for it..... Anyone here ever been to a try-out like this before? Any comments? Thanks.

Fourqts, welcome to the land of my youth. Check out Munster burger for a really good (though greasy) hamburger. Hi House in Lake Station makes a really good Broasted chicken. And the Rosewood (or Roselawn) cafe in Portage makes a killer Ham Salad sandwich. My parents live in Highland Indiana.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Tue, Apr 6, 6:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
GoalieHawk, I can only speak of the MLRH tryout I went to. It was mostly free form warm up sessions to begin. Then the players were broken up into 4 teams, 2 teams took the surface while the other 2 observed. After your 20 minute period you had to wait for the other scrimmage to finish. Teams were then reorganized and the process began again. If a 20 minute period ended in a tie a shootout was held. Faced 6 shots in shootout and stopped 5. Then they announced who made the elite games later that day. Didn't make it even though most people felt I played well enough to make it. Oh well, guess that is one of the handicaps of trying to become a 32 year old rookie.

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Tue, Apr 6, 8:52AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'm also wondering if there is any endurance secrets? They have some "energy pills" at my local Golds Gym. I am wondering if I should try them..... Is there anyway I can get more energy/stanima/endurance or whatever through a pill/drug/drink or whatever? There are a lot of energy drinks out there. What about "Red Bull"? Also those small cans of drinks at 7-11. They are labeled "energy", "anti-ox", etc. What about those? What about supplements? Like creatine? I guess I am looking for that extra edge..... any comments?

    gbfreeman: . . . . Tue, Apr 6, 12:43AM PST (-0700 GMT)
GoalieHawk, I can give you the information regarding the Hansens drinks from first hand experience. I drink a can of Energy before games and if I have more that one game I also drink a can of Stamina. They seem to improve my awareness and reflexes. Energy can (like some other Ginseng products) cause nervousness. Antiox is supposed to have Anti Oxident qualities. From what I understand, this deals with the natural aging of cell matter and would not have any short term benefits. Sobe Energy and Zen Blend seem to work for me also.

    CrankHead: . . . . Tue, Apr 6, 12:47AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Crystal Meth can give you a quick energy boost.

GH, it has been my experience that most camps USUALLY run some what the same. A coach will have anywhere from 4-6 goalies show up for camp. While it does help to have a good camp the thing to remember is that it's the way you've already played/numbers that got you invited in the first place. The coach or one of his stooges either checked you out or has heard promising things about you and want's to see if you fit into the puzzle that makes up the team. During the camp the coach is going to be busy assesing players and lines both O and D to determine what and who works best. This usually is explained a little in the locker room and then may be breif instructions on the dry erase board on ice. It will basically be for players, ie:white is on the power play black killing with D in red(or any combo similar). His instructions to you will probablly be which net he wants you in and thats about it. Don't be surprised if you don't get much direction at all, the coach is devoting most of his time to picking players. At certain points in the camp he will start looking at the goalies to see how they are working out and who is looking strong, this is usually after he has an idea of his lines and wants to test drive them. This can be good and bad because if your in the net against his first choice line you may have the less organized or weaker players in front of you and it can be nerve racking. The bottom line is don't out think yourself, don't change anything in the way you play, play your game and don't count the goals......Goals HAPPEN. If this camp is the most important thing to you it will reflect in your play and your effort. If for some reason the coach releases you it doesn't mean your no good, it's just that you might not fit into the team he has planned. Look at all the Big time guys who were shown the door before they found a team they fit in on. There is no way anyone, me included can tell what to expect at any camp, each coach is different as is each camp. Take from it all the good things you learned and add them to your game and work on the weak points of your game as well. My biggest piece of advice is to tell you to stay Hydrated and get plenty to eat. 2 a day practices will wear you out quick and it's easy to fall behind on both food and water. All of the camps I've been to provided big spreads of food for the players, 3 hots and a cot. Don't go gobbling a bunch of wiz bang products that claim to make you better. It's been my experience that they don't live up to their claims and in some cases can be detrimental. The way your body handles certain products will be different from the next guy, if you haven't been using it or used it before then trying something new in camp is a bad idea. The only things I've found that really work(this is for me now) is Creatine and Andro-6 and a multi vitamin. I know some people get cramps easier when on creatine and can't use it, I don't have this problem so I use it . It sounds like your trying to run the race before it's started. Just calm down and do what you always do.....play hockey . Thats the big secret and thats what it's all about...playing hockey. There is nothing in a can or anything anyone can tell you that can predict how YOUR camp will be. Be sure to have fun too, don't let yourself get wrapped too tight since it will effect your play as well. Good luck

gbfreeman----- What do you mean? The drink can make you nervous? How? Also, what is the anti-ox drink? What is it and what does it do?..... Carpe De Puck----- Thanks for the advice..... About supplements. My mom doesn't want me to take them because she feels it will cause side affets in the future(liver damage, cancer, etc). I've heard a lot about creatine and I've heard it works and it is safe. I asked my sports medicane doctor and he said it was fine for me to use it..... I don't feel like paying $50+ every two weeks for some good creatine. So how can I get the energy I need the natural way? What are the best foods that are proven to work. Like pasta and stuff. Like I said I am looking for that extra edge..... What should I do and shouldn't do in the try-outs? Before a Jr.Hawk try-out a guy told me they look for guys that come out of the net and challenge a lot. Things like that. Things that I should know..... Thanks.

As far as drinks/supplements/etc etc etc go, there's a big theory in endurance sports now (for anyone who doesn't know I've done the Ironman more than a couple times) that the single most emportant thing for alert, improved maximum performance is a well balanced diet. Cut out the chemicals and crap, and just eat lots of fruits, vegetables, grains, non-fatty meats and fish, etc. Eat close to the earth. I personally still think a good multivitamin helps too. I tend to get a bit superstitious, but I find Metabolol Endurance by Champion Nutrition to be a great pre-workout drink. You'll need a blender, but it's a good balance, and if you blend it with some fruit it'll perk you up quite a bit. In short though, there's no magic pill.

hey smott, my paper says that Ulfie and the Murph may be a duo again by this weekend. sound familiar???

    z-man: . . . . Wed, Apr 7, 11:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I always feel good on the ice and I think that it is due to my diet. I eat no meat at all and try to avoid cheese or other proteins for the 8 hours before the game and I eat carbs like pasta, bread, and potatoes 2 hours before and sometimes a little small chocolate bar or other sugar (not in a soda though) in the hour before. I don't have any endurance problems but I agree that you must eat enough and really pay attention to the water bottle to keep from getting subtle dehydration, which can make it hard to focus. Also, I just ordered an Itech Profile 9100 helmet, anyone have one of these? I got a screaming deal on it.

Hey goalies..... Tried that drink. Called "energy". Tasted good and I think it worked a little bit..... I talked to some of the Portland Winterhawks that I know at my school. Found out I can't practice for them because I'm not on the protected list. Which pisses me off because I know I am better than some of those guys on the list. A guy who plays for the Jr.Hawks Midget A team might play for them next year. He is the teams best player. Haven't seem him play but I heard he was very good. He is 6'3" 200 something..... Just because I'm not play Midget A for the Jr.Hawks doesn't mean I'm not good enough. I didn't pay my in to the game like those guys, I earned it.

    z-man: . . . . Thu, Apr 8, 7:32AM PST (-0700 GMT)
GoalieHawk, what do you think of Cody Rudkowsky? He was signed by the Blues for $825,000 each year for 3 years with a $1mil bonus at signing.

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Thu, Apr 8, 8:23AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Z-man----- I've seen Cody Rudkowsky play a lot in the past couple of seasons. One reason I like Cody is because of his amazing puck handling skills. Last year in the warm up he would fire a puck over the glass to almost the top level of the Memorial Colisuem. His backhand is almost has good as his forehand shot..... He is very flexible and he is a hard worker. His style is pretty good too. He is pretty much a butterfly goalie that does whatever it takes to stop the puck..... He shutout the Winterhawks in a few games this year too.

    z-man: . . . . Thu, Apr 8, 9:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I saw the TBirds and Hawks in the Rose Garden this year and the Winterhawks won 6-0 or 7-0. Both teams were down to like 7 or 8 players total from fights and Rudkowsky was skating to the blue line and firing the puck down ice itching to fight LaBarbara. Do they play at Mountain View in Vancouver? For that matter, do they mostly live and attend school in Washington? That's what I heard when I lived in Portland a couple years ago. Now I live somewhat near Seattle and see more Thunderbirds games.

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Thu, Apr 8, 4:41PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Z-man----- First a goalie ever did that to me I would get into a fight with him. Cody would have killed Jason. I've seen Jason fight, and that is something he can't do..... The Winterhawks practice at Mountain View. Four of them go to my school. I am kind of friends with them but they are all SO CONCEDED! It's okay, some of them are nice though.

    Vile: . . . . Thu, Apr 8, 6:28PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Second league game on Monday, I won 5-1 but only faced 8 shots (6 in the final period). Lost the shutout bid with 25 seconds. Still, my numbers are 89% save and GAA 1.00. Just enjoying the whole experience tho...

    Vile: . . . . Thu, Apr 8, 6:32PM PST (-0700 GMT)
The team I played against had 5-6 women, who proceded to out play their male teamates hands down. I asked my defensemen about it, and they agreed. A couple of them were just plain mean.

    z-man: . . . . Thu, Apr 8, 9:19PM PST (-0700 GMT)
GoalieHawk, when I lived in Portland I went to Clark College and there was a High School nearby I can't remember which. I lived on Burnside in Portland but went to school in Vancouver because I could lie about my resident status in Washington but in Oregon they checked and would charge me nonresident fees. Anyway, I liked Clark College.

Subbed in C last night and lost 6-2. Ever notice how in C league games you often feel like you're out there all by yourself? Of course I did "clear" one from behind up the right boards onto their forward's tape who shot in in the corner before I got back. But I probably wouldn't have been back there if they didn't have a three on one developing.

"C" leagues.....sheesh, they should call them the "No 'D' " league. It seems no matter what team I end up on in "c" this is no knowledge of what to do on defense. I feel more like a coach sometimes. "No....Dont clear the puck up the middle of the ice" oops....sorry about that keep...my fault.

I'm curious to see how far Carolina will make it as well as Dallas. I've been talking to Miska and I should have pictures of my mask by next week (knock on wood). I'm really tired of the loaner mask and just want my mask back. It's funny how you can get attached to a piece of equipment some times.

Oh well. I am able to eat today, and enjoyed my Pens thumpwhacking the Rental Red Wings 3-0. TB returns from his broken hand and pitches a cheerio. Pens played very well for a change - they do have to hang on to that 6th playoff spot!

    smott: . . . . Sun, Apr 11, 7:34PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Finishing SHellack playoffs last Tuesday, playing the other loser's bracket for the all important 5th out of 6 place finish. Strangely we play to a 4-4 tie. No score in 5 min OT. So we go to the shootout. Out of 5 shooters we score 1, they score 1. Then the refs say "Game over!" Other team wins, ref says because they had the better reg-season record. I'm thinking - "then why did we play an OT or have a shootout??"

    smott: . . . . Sun, Apr 11, 7:35PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Funny thing is the other goalie did not want to quit. (Maybe he just had to beat the scrawny bald chick at the other end?...) Refs leave the ice. Other team sends a shooter, I stone him. Their guy stones our guy, still tied. Zamboni guy shuts off the lights. We all go home.

    smott: . . . . Sun, Apr 11, 7:36PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Kind of funny, but I was expecting them to keep goign with the shootout until teh game was decided. Any ideas on this one?? Or did the refs just want to go have a beer?

    gbfreeman: . . . . Sun, Apr 11, 9:06PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott, if they went through the shootout to decide, they should have gone to the sudden death shootout. Played my first Ice game ever tonight, we lost 7-4. Gave up 5 goals in the first period (where I was still worrying about my skating) and then only 2 the rest of the way. Teammates said I played well even though I didn't think so. The first time I laced up ice skates in 22 years. Guess it is like riding a bike, you never forget. Anyway, had a BLAST!!! Gonna be kind of hard to feel the same excitement at Roller this week. Three playoff games on Thursday.

    C5: . . . . Sun, Apr 11, 9:12PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smottie, I have heard of this. It sucks. It's like you go into the game spotting the other team a few goals. Yes, Barasso looked mighty mighty tonight, but they were a lot of outside shots, but still he managed to make some good, solid stops. Tell me again-- who makes Barasso's pads? I want a pair, and I'm serious. Ozzie wants that one goal he let in off his right skate back, bad. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Ozzie needs to get around the crease better. He seems to want to glide everywhere.

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Sun, Apr 11, 9:24PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey goalies..... After a long season my team is the State Champions. We won all our playoff games including the one tonight which was winner take all for the chamionship. We won 7-2. I lost the shutout with about ten minutes left in the 3rd period. The day before I shut them out 5-0..... I also picked up a penalty in this game for slashing..... When the buzzer sounded all the guys threw off their gloves and raced over to me. It was a great feeling. The other team was very good, but we played a solid game and won the game. We all got to hold the trophy and we all got medals. When they called up my name to get the medal everyone in the stands went crazy. About 50 people were at the game..... I finished the playoffs 6-0-0, 1.66 GAA, .924 SAVE%, 1 SHUTOUT, 3 PIMS..... Finished the entire season 21-0-0, 2.09 GAA, .911 GAA, 3 SHUTOUTS, 3 PIMS..... This was a great season.

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Sun, Apr 11, 9:27PM PST (-0700 GMT)
By the way..... About the 5-0 shut out I mentioned..... A few hours before the game my dad told me my grandma died the day before. I was pretty sad but my dad was really sad, because now both his parents have died..... After the game my dad was so proud of me. I told him that the game was for grandma, and he began to tear up..... So the shut out was extra special for me.

Hi Guys. Does anyonw know the rules in the NHL about pucks hitting the goalies mask. In the UK when the puck deflects from the mask in to the net, then its a goal otherwise the play is whistled down. But I watched a couple of NHL games on tape from last month and play seemed to continue after hitting the goalies mask.

C5 - Barrasso's pads are made by a fellow named Smith in Buffalo. You may be able to track him down by contacting the Pens?....But beware, those pads are madein the old Vic mold, and they are not esepcially for a fly goalie. More for the convential style. ALso they give nuclear powered rebounds, don't count on smothering too many pucks with these pads. But they're very light, and they look awesome, in a lived-in sort of way! :-D

    smott: . . . . Mon, Apr 12, 8:47AM PST (-0700 GMT)

smott, over here in the uk, they whistle the play when the goalies geet hit in the head for safety, the refs usually just ask you if you are ok. I thought this was an international thing as I saw a Pool B World championship game in those rules applied. Maybe its canadian/american thing.

    Goal35: . . . . Tue, Apr 13, 5:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)

ALso I have contacted Bucky Palermo here in Pgh - the guy who does all the Pens' skates. He says he has Smith's number somewhere and I should have it by end of week. Papillon usually the refs will skate by after you get beaned and ask if you're all right but the play does not stop. Unless of course you stay down and appear to be really injured but with today's masks that is rarely the case.

    smott: . . . . Tue, Apr 13, 7:47AM PST (-0700 GMT)

This is going to be a COOL playoffs. The games recently prove that nothing's set in stone. The Flyers have three different teams. Dallas powerplay is insane. Colorado, with Theo as sparkplug, looks huge. Ottawa? Can their goaltending combo make something happen? NJ doesn't worry me. Same with Toronto, Phoenix, or anything in California. Who's going to win it all? My prediction? I'm kinda leaning towards Colorado. But we'll see!

C5, I will try get Smith's nbr for you from this guy here in Pgh. As for the pads, the closest I know would be those old Vic shoe-box shape pads. Very very light, it will throw off your balance for awhile, and they are stiff and do not lay flat easily. Hi-power rebounds. If you can learn to kick he puck beyond onrushing forwards you will be OK. Won't smother too many with these pads.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 14, 9:58AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Heh heh yes I am imprinting on food like duck on their Mom! More Chinese last night!

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Apr 14, 12:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmm... the guys at physical therapy seem to think it's pretty funny to make pucks out of tape and ace wraps, throw them over my shoulder and chant HEXXXTAAALL.. or call me Half-sek.. Ah well, I'll let them have their fun. Wait'll I bring the ol goal stick up there and start whacking shins.

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Apr 14, 12:17AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Weighed in at 124 this morning! Only 35 more lbs to go!

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 14, 1:38PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Good man! You're catching up to me! I need to make 135 by 4/28. That's a lotta chop suey....

    fourqts: . . . . Wed, Apr 14, 9:44PM PST (-0700 GMT)
roenick hit by hatcher (cheap shot from the angles they showed..... Jaw broken in 3 spots.... Played one more shift then left the ice....... I think that just spelled the end of the yotes unless Boolin decideds he is super DOM and shuts all down in the playoffs

    Goal35: . . . . Wed, Apr 14, 9:45PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi all, just got back from the scrimmage.... was alot of fun, very fast paced... felt sorry for the other goalie, dont think he know what he getting into... we ended up winning 27-6.... now on a tech note, i'm looking for suggestions on changing sticks, i've always been partial to Christian, but i tseems that now i'm playing more in the upper levels i'm breaking alot more sticks, they seem to break in the heel alot... so i'm looking for ideas on what you guys are using....

    deke: . . . . Wed, Apr 14, 11:56PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Goal35- I've been using Heatons for the last couple of years. The old III's wore like iron, but can't find them anymore. I just bought a Hespeler because I liked the feel, but haven't used it on the ice yet.

    C5: . . . . Thu, Apr 15, 4:58AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I hate to say it, but that hit on Roenick looked clean, like Kasparitis' hit on Lindros, it was brutal... but clean...

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Apr 15, 5:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
WOW, 27-6 sounds like shellack of the year type numbers. smott, can we nominate non-chatsters for SOTY? G35, what was the shot count?

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Apr 15, 6:14AM PST (-0700 GMT)
G35, I also used to use Christians (CC) and I found the same thing. The heel sucks. I've been using an Osgood pattern Hespeler lately and love it. Very light and really holding up well.

    Goal35: . . . . Thu, Apr 15, 7:10AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Thanx for the info on the sticks Sieve, deke.. as far as the shot count... huge - lol, it was all run and gun, and I had the better O, not alot of D played, and the other goalie didn't play that bad he had some spectacular saves, but no D

    smott: . . . . Thu, Apr 15, 8:28AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm that hit on JR...technically he left his feet but otherwise looked pretty clean to me.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Apr 15, 8:35AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Plus Hatcher's such a big boy. Even on his feet, his shoulder is at about JR's teeth level.

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Apr 15, 8:40AM PST (-0700 GMT)
to maintain a .900 sv%, that guy would have had to faced 300 shots. now THAT is a busy night!!! : >o

Anyone having problems accessing C5's Pro Goalie picture page? I have not been able to get it to load today.

    C5: . . . . Thu, Apr 15, 8:09PM PST (-0700 GMT)
OH--- sorry. I should have announced it! I have left GE for greener pastures. I could upload my entire site right now to a different server, but somehow, 250 megs of hockey images don't go through the modem easily. Look for the pic pages and everything else-- the super popular Catsfive homepage, yeah, right-- to be up next week. Sorry for the inconvenience. But I'm still gathering images... and there are some beauties!

    C5: . . . . Thu, Apr 15, 8:09PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Played my last ever game tonight at The Cooler in Atlanta... {sniff} I had so much fun tonight! I played awesome. I've been so stressed lately with moving, etc., and it was hard to focus in the first period, but my team played awesome and it ended 1-1. Then they just STOPPED playing. It was weird, they totally resorted to wraparounds and blind setups in front the rest of the night. We lost 7-2, but I faced SO many shots, including one SUPER cool save on a breakaway, the guy gets up out of the corner and skates again in front and shelves it. @#$@#$@!!! I slammed my stick SO many times on the post, thought about breaking it, but didn't. It was fun. Then, three beers in the parking lot, saying good bye to guys I've played with for the last year and a half. {sigh} Life is all just hellos and goodbyes. :D

    C5: . . . . Thu, Apr 15, 8:10PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Um... well, 7-2 doesn't mean I played AWESOME.. let me define what *I* define as awesome, just so you don't think I'm going to run out and try out for some NHL team somewhere... Awesome to me is having fun, being focused, joking with the refs, learning a lesson or two, and making a few stops that you'll fall asleep that night thinking about, thinking, "wow, now I wish I had THAT on video." :D

    C5: . . . . Thu, Apr 15, 8:11PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Beats falling asleep thinking about other things.

    Toast: . . . . Thu, Apr 15, 9:22PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Way to go C5 - that is what goaltending is about. Not stats, etc., but having a great time out there. Winning helps of course...:). As for Hatcher's hit on JR, maybe a bit rambunctious, but it should be two games max. Colin Campbell screwed himself with that wimpy Bodger suspension, Hatcher's hit was nowhere as vicious. It was nice to see the payback for the hit on Mikey Mo...you just don't take liberties with the other team's top guy.

    Toast: . . . . Thu, Apr 15, 9:26PM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for the playoffs, I am with smottsie. The East is so close a hot goalie can carry you a long way, and Buffalo has the best. I know Lord Byron had a great season, but Dom's .936 save % is unbelievable, particularly because Buf isn't all that tight defensively. I'll wait for the matchups, but right now I like Beantown over Ottawa, NJ over Pgh, Buf over Carolina and my Buds ousting the Flyers. As for the west, um...by the script except Phoenix goes down. As for Cup favourite, I still like the Wings. But in a week, I'll make my "official" picks.

    Toast: . . . . Thu, Apr 15, 9:27PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Around here, both my remaining teams are in the finals. That starts next Tuesday and Friday respectively. That is about it for Toast news, time to call it a night.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Fri, Apr 16, 6:10AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Played 5 games (roller) last night. I can barely move today. Lost the first one 6-4, second 3-1 (playoff game), third 3-2 (playoff game), fourth 5-0 (playoff game) and won the 5th 4-1. 5 games for 4 different teams. So, one team into the championship game. We get to play the #1 seed who beat us 7-0 during the regular season. Also asked to play in the Championship game for the team that beat me 3-1. Wierd night, in the 3-2 loss 2 of the goals were of the bouncing, tumbling, screwball variety. During the 4-1 win though I ended up making 4 highlight reel glove saves, 2 on breakaways. Get to play ice tonight. Wierd though, I'm more nervous about playing an Ice pickup than I was playing my first ever ice game last Sunday.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Fri, Apr 16, 6:16AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Toast, I believe Boston moved into the 6th seed due to their win last night. They have the tiebreaker (most wins) with Buffalo. Did anyone see the nice little tribute the Senators did last night for Wayne? Igor Kravcuk skated over and got his stick for a souvenier (sp?) and all the Ottawa players came over and shook wayne's hand. Then the announcer announced the 1 star of the game. Yep, Wayne. They played "Simply the best" and the Foo Fighters "My Hero" as Wayne skated out for the ovation. He did 2 curtain calls. My wife has only been to one NHL game and I am glad that it was a Kings game when Wayne was still there. Sunday's game at MSG should be interesting. Also, Chelios returns to the United Center on Saturday. Playoffs start Wednesday. Can't wait

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Apr 16, 6:44AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I heard on the radio today that the Vipers are wearing tie-dyed jerseys for their last reg. season home game this weekend. Those ought to be interesting. also, GB, dont hold your breath on Chelios playing at Chicago tonite. There is talk of a phantom groin keeping him out.

    Vile: . . . . Fri, Apr 16, 7:54AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I think the Michigan K-Wings will be playing Yotes on Saturday. I doubt anyone of any importance will take the ice against the Yotes for a meaningless game right before a playoff run. Sorry, 4qts... but I think JR really deserved that hit. I read today his wife wants him to retire now. Apparently he also had his finger broken by a slash before the Hatcher hit. Bob Gainey is predicting a 5 game suspension. I think Keith T. is really funny. Before the game he told the Stars to put up or shut up, then follows up with a whine fest afterwards. I think JR and Lindros are the excuses their teams were hoping for to bow out of the playoffs.

    Toast: . . . . Fri, Apr 16, 3:25PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yep, I see today Boston has moved up, however, don't discount NJ finishing first. As I said, I will make my final pedictions once the playoff picture is settled. BTW, did anyone see both of Gretz's news conferences? The one in Ottawa was so genuine, the one in NY seemed more staged. Just my perception...and yes, I agree about Keith Crychuk. Did a 180. Did you notice that as Hatcher hit JR, it was Keith coming around behind the net too? And he didn't do anything on the ice. Seems to me that if someone did that to say, Forsberg, Fluery would of shiskabobed the guy on the spot.

    Toast: . . . . Fri, Apr 16, 3:26PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Anyway, I am looking forward to this year's playoffs. Some good matchups in the East, and the West will really heat up in round two. Avs/Wings...ooh.

    fourqts: . . . . Sat, Apr 17, 0:38AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Not so happy with the JR things going on... Seen lots of replays of both the hit on madano and the hit on JR in the last two days..... Hatcher had it out for JR.. that is plain to see.... Still thinking the Madano hit was pretty clean with the pick behind the goal and out of site.... from the replays it looks like madano is gathering the puck.... Talk of a five to fifteen gamer for the hit but not anounced till tomorrow..... I'd actually like to see no suspension and hatcher play tomorrow (as I have tickets).... but hey this is why they allow fights in the nhl.... glad to see JR's teamies jump onto hatcher for him (NOT).... We'll see in the playoffs... Picks... West Colorado east Buffalo goaltending is going to be awesome.... happy to watch

My Battram trapper finally arrived yesterday. It looks great, can't wait to try it. Any of you Battram users have any suggestions for break in?

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Sun, Apr 18, 3:41PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Don't get disappointed if it takes awhile to break in like your old glove. Mine is broke in nice now and seems to keep getting better. I do recommend you flex it with the cuff un velcroed and bend it backwards a little. I found this helped speed up break in time somewhat. Other than that just using it and forming it is all you can really do. Enjoy.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Sun, Apr 18, 3:42PM PST (-0700 GMT)
    GRETZKY HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!!

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Sun, Apr 18, 3:45PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Wayne Gretzky, the Great One, retired..... I can't imagine hockey without him, he is hockey..... His last game today was one to be remembered. The Rangers lost 2-1 in overtime by a goal by Jagr, but Wayne did pick up an assist on a nice goal..... After the game Wayne took a team photo and took many laps around the rink and came out a couple more times for a skate..... I don't think there was a dry eye in the house. Even I was crying after the game..... Wayne was an icon. He is the best hockey player in the history of the NHL. Words can't describe him..... Gretzky is and always will be my favorite player..... It's hard to see him go..... Wayne Gretzky, holder over 61 NHL records. He truely is "The Great One".

    Tripp: . . . . Sun, Apr 18, 7:41PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I can't even remember hockey without Gretz... of course, he played for 20 years and I'm only 23... but still. Even as a lifelong goalie, Wayne was always an idol of mine. I dunno if we'll ever see teams like those mid-80's Oilers again. 92 goals and 215 poits in a season will be hard to duplicate, that's for sure. I wish nothing but the best for # 99.

    Tripp: . . . . Sun, Apr 18, 7:43PM PST (-0700 GMT)
and speaking of my beloved Oilers... what do you guys say? Sweep? 5 games? Personally, I'll keep the faith and root for them no matter what... but a 6 game series will be a moral victory. Dallas is powerful.

    deke: . . . . Sun, Apr 18, 7:50PM PST (-0700 GMT)
CdP - Thanks for the suggestions, I also thank you for recommending Battram. I am thoroughly impressed with the design, features, workmanship and that awesome snag on the trapper. Scott does good work! It was an emotional weekend, not only as a lifelong NYR fan, but obviously, as a fan of the game. I thought that one of the purest examples of Gretzky's greatness was the way, in Ottawa on Thursday night, that he sat with the media until they ran out of questions. How many professional athletes with their security entourages, over-inflated salaries and egos would have done the same? Thanks Wayne.

    smott: . . . . Sun, Apr 18, 9:20PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well despite the OT win over Wayner and the Rangers, my Birds go out with a whimper, losing 2 of the last 3, wind up 8th and now will get shellacked by NJR. They had a good chance against the Canes, or even the Leafs given the wide open style, but NJ? Uh uh. Funny. Second year in a row Constantine has not gotten them motivated in the last weeks. Flat flat flat. Makes you wonder.

    smott: . . . . Sun, Apr 18, 9:21PM PST (-0700 GMT)
...but enough about the Pens! Tonight, yours truly la femme smottsie, wins the C-league championship! Not much to brag about I know, but it does feel good to get out and play well given my current circumstances!

    smott: . . . . Sun, Apr 18, 9:24PM PST (-0700 GMT)
We blow out the guys who went 6-0 last 6 games and knocked off #1 seed. Final score was 10-5 (a real defensive gem I must say) and lucky for me the other guy sieved out early. I got in the way at a few important times and it was 5-1 after one, then we cruised. The guys gave me the trophy and we drank beer in the parking lot. Geez am I tired. And bald. But heck I'm happy.

    deke: . . . . Sun, Apr 18, 10:02PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Congrats. on the championship smott. I know from recent experience that winning a C league game as a goalie can often be a lot tougher than in A or B. Great to hear that you're feeling up to the challenge. I wish your Pens luck in the playoffs but am afraid that I agree with your analysis. Anyway, keep after it.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Sun, Apr 18, 11:46PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Congrats smott! First shot in tonights game, goal. GRRR. But wait, doof who redirected it did it with a high stick. Disallowed. Woke me up a little and go on for the 4-0 shutout in the second game ever on ice. Roller hockey championship game in upper league tomorrow. Good chance to take it all. Championship for lower division Thursday. Chances in that game depends on which team shows up.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Sun, Apr 18, 11:53PM PST (-0700 GMT)
call on playoffs (NHL) NJ over Pitt, Boston over Carolina, Toronto over Philadelphia, Sabres over Ottawa. Second round, Sabres over NJ, Boston over Toronto. Eastern conf. Boston over Sabres. West, Stars over Oilers, Redwings over Ducks, Sharks over Avs, Phoenix over St Louis. Stars over Sharks, Redwings over Phoenix. Stars over Redwings. Finals, Boston. Real reach huh? Really like their speed and Dafoe doesn't seem to get rattled as easily as Eddie.

Hmmm out East I think I agree with those picks with the exception of Sens-Buff. Hasek hasn't been 100% and I think Sens are very solid. Buff could definitely win it but I think that's a toss-up.

    smott: . . . . Mon, Apr 19, 8:21AM PST (-0700 GMT)

BTW Vile a good insight re Lindros/JR handing their respective teams the easy out...I believe that is more true for Philly. Meanwhile ya gotta wonder what's it's like being Eddie. Lots of pressure this year. When you've played for as many superior defensive teams as he has with so little to show for it, hmmm well. Crunch time. If I was the Sharks I would do anything and everythign to agitate the Eagle out of his bird-brain. Should be fun to watch.

Well, my internet access has been a little screwy lately. Congrats Smott of the championship. 4qts, what do you think of 7 games? Personally, I think it was pretty fair. to update you on my play this weekend: Played Friday night, got a 7-0 shutout, faced only 10 shots and got an assist on a power play goal. Played Sunday night, took the 7-2 loss on 27 shots and got a tripping penalty. We took a lot of penalties, and I gave up 5 power play goals. Still, there were only 3 goals I really regretted. The first goal was a long, slow motion deflection from my d and off my skate. Luckily I play tonight as well, so I can get this loss out of my head.

    Vile: . . . . Mon, Apr 19, 3:34PM PST (-0700 GMT)
2 goals on 5 on 3 penalties, at one point we had 60 sec of action 5 on 3 all in our zone. I think that was actually what killed us. After that, no one had any gas.

    Guardian: . . . . Mon, Apr 19, 6:43PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Congratulations Smott...I think that you're likely dealing with the hair loss better than any of the men on this chat would. Since you're of English descent, you understand well what it is to keep a stiff upper lip. Sure, it may quaver at times, but you can control it like you do the rebounds. Best wishes.

Okay...Hall of Fame. GO! Well worth it. As for Westwood, doesn't ring a bell. Hope it isn't Chesswood...as for being a fourplex, Toronto has several. York Ice Gardens, Mississauga, Etobicoke, Markham, Oakville are a few off the top of my head, over 100 rinks in the area. And this weekend, I'll be in Montreal for a tourney...

    Toast: . . . . Mon, Apr 19, 9:17PM PST (-0700 GMT)
    My picks. NJ (5), Buf (7), Tor (6) & Beantown (6). Out west, Stars (4), Avs (7), Wings (4) & St Loo (6).

Seven games is just about right i think..... But JR did get nailed.... Sat night was the rematch and yours truly was in the stands.... Refs crack down early and often..... Like 130 pen minutes before the third period.... But the event of the evening was Tkchoke's blowup..... Eddie trips him after a penalty at the blue line just to torque him i think.... Then half way through the second with tkchoke in front of the net eddie crosses him good.... Tkchoke's gloves go flying and he starts pounding on Eddie.... Gets in like six shots before sydor (SP) jumps on his back..... He rips sydor off his back then proceeds to just drill him..... The funny part was that you could see Sydor trying to get down onto the ice to have the fight stopped.... Tkchoke just yanked him back up and proceeded to land punch after punch..... Tkchoke was posessed all game just throwing his body all around.... Will be an interesting playoffs if he can keep up that intensity (as his teamies will follow) ALA... Drake, Tocc, Diduck..... Maybe the spark the yotes needed..... If the intensity remains and the blues fold, I would not want to be hatcher in the second round

    fourqts: . . . . Mon, Apr 19, 11:10PM PST (-0700 GMT)

Well, finished my back to back games from hell. The I league season is only 5 games. First 3 games I was 92% save and a GAA .66 with a shutout and an assist. Last 2 games were GAA 8.0 and 69% save with a tripping minor. I let a bunch of soft goals in, and twice they caught me leaning away from my blocker side. Oh well, didn't help that we only had 5 forwards and 3 defensemen.

    Vile: . . . . Tue, Apr 20, 10:06AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I am predicting no major upsets this year. everything will go according to form (which will be upsetting in itself) with Blues over Yotes (5 over 4 not a big deal) and Bruins over Canes (an unearned 3 seed for the Canes). I think Ottawa can hold off Buffalo and Dom. I can't make any predictions about the second round. I don't know the East well enough to make a call, and an Avs/ Wings series would be a war of attrition. Assuming the stars survive the first round, I imagine they'll walk through the second. I think there is going to be some awesome hockey played in the conference finals.

    Vile: . . . . Tue, Apr 20, 11:48AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I am looking to upgrade my poor excuse for a chest protector... At this point, the two finalists are a Heaton Helite 5 on Sports Exchange for $310, with supposedly "illegal" shoulder floaters. My other consideration is Battram's chest pad for $340. I've heard great things about his pads and gloves, but I don't think anyone has tried his chest protector...

    smott: . . . . Tue, Apr 20, 12:48AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Interesting picks all....I think there will be few sleeper-series. The only really boring one that comes to mind is my birds being fried by NJ....

    smott: . . . . Tue, Apr 20, 12:50AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...and here in Pgh we are wondering about Coach Constantine, second year in a row, after a decent season, he has let the Pens slide oh-so-badly coming into playoffs. Couple weeks ago they were 1 pt back of NJ for the #2 seed. Then 2-8-2 later they are bottom of teh pack. Ugly as it gets. And needing playoff revenue as bad as they do, a real nasty hit in the financial column...

    smott: . . . . Tue, Apr 20, 12:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
And yes the blood will flow freely out West in the semis and after. In fact that is one factor in the East's favor...the winner of teh West may come out of that conf final badly depleted. So, hmmm. I still go with the Wings, but Avs are very close. Out here I pick NJ.

    deke: . . . . Tue, Apr 20, 6:31PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Vile: I can't speak about Battram c/a combo, but I just received my new trapper and am very pleased. I am quite partial to Brown c/a, it's bombproof. Check with Garner's of Barrie, Ontario for prices.

    Beatts: . . . . Tue, Apr 20, 7:18PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sieve...If you don't make it to the Hall of Fame you'll regret it. Where else can you actually grab and kiss the Stanley Cup !! Ewww now that I think of it, that may not have been such a good idea...hehe well worth the $7.50 canadian (.08 cents American) BTW there's plenty of beer for everyone !! hope you can handle it ;~)

    gbfreeman: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 5:08AM PST (-0700 GMT)
smott, apparently the NHL is ready to back Mario's group. They have talked about rejecting the franchise if it is awarded to another group by the bankrupcy judge. The full story is at button

actually beatts, I gave it a smooch at a party last summer. you are right though, It give me the willies just standing and staring at it. Smott, I like your finals prediction!!! Wings can get a little retribution on NJ for the 94-95 debacle.

Vile... Toast has the Battram c/a and has spoke very highly of it in the past... as far as playoffs.... and yes i'm picking lots of upsets... East- Pens/Sens/Bruins/Leafs West - Stars/Avs/Coyotes/Ducks

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 8:33AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmm well, as for the NHL backing Mario, I believe it is going to backfire. What they've actually done is told the Pens that they will be left off the schedule for 1999-2000, should they not resolve their bankruptcy dispute in the next 6 weeks. Since the legal beagles have gotten exactly nowhere in the last 6 months, I doubt they'll kiss and make up tomorrow. In addition, the added pressure may just cause their current finance backer, a French Corp who infused them with 20 mil$ to make payroll this year, to back out. And that will spell the end of my beloved Birds.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 8:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Basic problem is their current arena lease which costs them something like 3+ mil a year (unbelievably stupid deal by Howard Baldwin)is a lock until 2007. No way the team can survive with it, and no way SMG will let them out of it. Even Mario's plan calls for a new arena by 2004, which will not happen unless they can resolve the lease deal. Basically, the Pens need to raise approx 20+ mil to buy out their lease and get control of the arena, and where that money will come from who knows. The state? I doubt it. Even the mayor of Pgh will not support it. Thanks a lot. It really does look to me like the Pens are done in Pgh after this year, despite Mario's wanting to save them.

    Vile: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 8:50AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I am predicting no real upsets, but I love the anticipation of the NHL playoffs. Every team has at least an outside chance at not only sneaking a series, but possibly taking the the cup. There are some serious goaltenders in this year's playoffs. Rhodes, Dafoe, Hasek, Irbe, Beezer,T.B., Cujo, Broduer, Belfour, Osgood, Roy, Boolin, Herbert, Vernon, Salo and Fuhr. Every single one of them is capable of stringing a series on their head. I love the playoffs :)

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 9:37AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yup I agree though I am not sure I include Salo on the list. We'll see how ridiculous Cujo can get this year, now that he's not an underdog. Hasek should be interestign too, given he's been less than 100% with the groin lately. TB just coming off the broken hand and is very light on work. And Ozzie can't be letting in any more flyballs this year. They can't beat the Avs if he does. Watch Roy too, he's still got something to prove. And of course there's always The Eddie Question....

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 9:59AM PST (-0700 GMT)
right-o on Salo smott. I dont think he can take a team the distance. Same with Fuhr. Afraid his time is past. Sure hes got loads of playoff poise, but I think after his last surgery, he's got door hinges holding his tib/fibs to his femurs.

    Vile: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 10:04AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I just listed all the goalies... but all of the goalies have at some point during the season, thrown together a decent string of games. But that's what is so great about the playoffs (I am preaching to the choir here, I know). One goalie plays better than he usually does, and a few 3rd and fourth line guys chip in some timely goals, and you have a cup contender (almost :))

    Vile: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 10:10AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Good call Deke, Garner should have a new website up within a week, so I had to call about the Browns (they only list Bauer's on the web now) I asked for a quote on a top of the line Brown JB 553, and he gave me $315 American.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 10:18AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmmm I'm afraid as much as I liked the Pups earlier in the year, I am picking creaky old Fuhr and St Loo over Phoenix. Say 6 games. I doubt they'll get by Dallas though. Interesting to see if Detroit-Avs beat each other up so badly that they stagger into the Dallas semi and hand it to the Stars. Icky thought.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 10:41AM PST (-0700 GMT)
OH BTW C5! I am taking my pads to Bucky Palermo for repair today, I should be able to get you Pete Smith's Buffalo nbr, so you can call and ask about the Barrasso pads....stay tuned.

If I see you there, I'll see you there!

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 10:58AM PST (-0700 GMT)

AH, very tired. Blood counts dropping into transfusion territory. Have one more week to bounce back before the next chemo. However, morning routines do go more quickly when you have no hair!

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:24AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Also, oncem y appetite comes back which it does about a week after chemo, I eat whatever I want, which is a real treat. Chinese is the latest fetish! More veggies & chickn/eggplant on schedule tonight!

Heh heh yes it was pasta last chemo. Now chinese. Who knows what's next? Thai maybe?

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)
for some reason though, people in Ohio dont seem to get it which is wierd considering they are sandwiched between PA and Mich... hmm. I think it might be that football is just incredibly dominant there.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:30AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well the bankruptcy judge has decreed that they must stay in Pgh and honor their lease. So they have little choice but to fold, or buy it out somehow. Mario's group says the SMG guys won't negotiate a lower lease rate. Of course why would they. Anyway, basically Mario needs to find some investors will to come up with many, many millions of bucks for the team to stay here. Some help from teh city/state would be great but when teh mayor's telling you to go suck eggs that doesn't bode well. Biggest mistake they made was not getting on the "new arena" bandwagon with the Pirates & Steelers. Chose to stay in the Arena, huge mistake.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:32AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Oh yes the Barons. Reminds me of my first trip to skate on the Arena ice, practice with a little club team, I was maybe 17. They gave us the visitor's dressing room, Pens had played Cleveland the night before, and we found a bunch of rolls of this ugly red plastic tape everywhere! Kept them of course! I went out early and skated around the empty arena by myself. What fun!

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:32AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...of course this was back when the Arena was one of maybe 2 ice surfaces you could actually rent in Pgh!

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:33AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I don't think there are very many markets left, in fact I still think the NHL needs to desize a bit. Hate to see Pgh go with its history, but first the Quakers, now this...

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)
You should come here nad see the number of rinks around here. Yowsa, a lot went up in the past few years, I can think of 20 surfaces in the last five years.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:35AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well I fear I agree they'll be gone soon. The owners got really zip concessions from the players back in the strike-shortened season (Baldwin was way too easy on them) and now we're seeing the results. And I guesst he NHL is loath to step in and save the Pens, set an example, then watch 6 other teams fold in the next year or 2.

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Around here we got about 8-10 since teh CUp year, which is a real boom for the area. Used to drive an hour to my leagues, now 10-15 mins. Nice.

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
hey, that my High School team name... New Philadelphia H.S. -- Home of the Fighting Quakers... catch the irony?

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well, who is on shakey ground? Tampa, some of those new expansion teams, Carolina, a couple Cdn ones...

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:37AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Quakers started in Pgh, went to Florida and then folded in...hmmm, '31?

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:38AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Oops, I meant Philly...where the heck did Florida come from?

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:39AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Isn't Buff stretched a bit thin too? Definitely Montreal I thought. Could you imagine the Canadiens folding or moving?

    smott: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:39AM PST (-0700 GMT)
16 teams seems a long time ago....

...anyway fellas, I have to jet....SEE ya!...

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:40AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yep - Buf is stretched and Montreal is losing money. Can't see the Habs floding though, but they may be the team that is the catalyst to change.

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:41AM PST (-0700 GMT)
See you, and take care. Talk to you soon smottsie.

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:45AM PST (-0700 GMT)
aaaaaah, not sure where we are staying. Hope to find out tonite at practice. same with Div. Pretty low div. I suspect since we went 7-12-1 reg. season in C. Does ARC Icesports in Rexdale sound familiar to you?

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
    bye smott.....

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:47AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ah...yes. Realtively new rink, pretty nice. As for the division, probably D or rec then.

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:50AM PST (-0700 GMT)
ewww, D. hope not. Is Rexdale far from the city and Hall?

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hall of Fame is right downtown, easy to get to if you take the subway, which might be your best bet. Public transportation is very good in Toronto. Just go to Union station and it is five minutes from there in the old bank building.

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for D, no worries. Generally speaking for tourneys you drop oe division. For example, I play on a very good A team, but in tourneys A is usually for stacked teams, so we go B. You rather have a level playing field than anything else.

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Arent the transpo people on strike? Can I grab the subway in Rexdale though?

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:56AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Rexdale is a 'burb, so it is a bit of a hike in. So find the nearest subway stop, park the car and subway it in. North/south traffic doesn't flow well. T.O. is pretty big, Greater Toronto has about 5 million people.

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 11:57AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Strike is settled, back to work today.

    Toast: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 12:02AM PST (-0700 GMT)
From Rexdale, you can take the 401 to Allen Road. A subway station is just North and South. If you are going to drive in, take 401 to 427 South, then QEW East. It becomes the Gardiner Expressway, exit at Yonge and head North one block. Hall of Fame is at the corner of Front and Yonge.

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 12:02AM PST (-0700 GMT)
ok, thanks for the good info Toast. : >)

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Wed, Apr 21, 10:44PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Had an all-star game tonight against the best Jr.Hawks(mix of bantam and midget players). We lost 15-2. The good news was I wasn't in goal..... I played out. Which is the last time I will ever do that..... The guys we played are most conceded, dis-respectful players I've ever seen. Cheaps shots here and there. Cussing, holding, punching, you name it. The refs were terrible. Could of had a blind ref and done better..... One of the worst things was a guy who scored about 8 goals in the game. After his fifth or so he began to show off, skating laps after goals pumping his arms. Just dis-tasteful..... It's a sad thing to see..... I played well in the game. I played defense. I had a couple of good checks and a couple of good plays and almost scored a goal..... One things I did was stop a 3-1, and lay a sweet hip-check on the guy that had those 8 some goals..... I have a question. What makes good players like them so conceded and dis-respectful? The same with their coaches..... Is this the way to get ahead in the game? Do players have to become conceded and play a cheapshot-artist game to make to up a level? I think it begans with the coaches. The coach of the Midget "AAA" Jr.Hawk team, Bobby Freelan told me there wasn't a chance in hell I would play in the NHL. He told me this when I was 13 and just really starting hockey. At that time he hasn't seen me play. That's great telling a kid that, isn't it?..... The reason I say they are conceded and all is because most of the players on the Jr.hawks, I've been their team mates. All were pretty nice guys and not conceded or dis-respectful. But once on the Jr.hawks they turn totally diffenrent..... It's a shame. Makes me wonder if my dream is worth it..... It's just sad.

C5 update... playing hockey Saturday night at Chelsea piers from 11:30 - 1:30... hope to get noticed somehow.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Apr 22, 7:27AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm, poor Ducks. Thought they played about as well as they could, still wasn't enough. Anybody see the clip on Hebert? Didn't look all that bad to me, in fact I thought he was diving at first. Hmmm. Of course with Stevie Y on a tear who wouldn't want the night off? :-D

    smott: . . . . Thu, Apr 22, 7:28AM PST (-0700 GMT)
And as soon as I diss Salo he nearly steals one. Meanwhile Dom steals another game. Ho hum. What were the shots, like a million to 15?

    smott: . . . . Thu, Apr 22, 7:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Anybody see the Sharks-Avs schedule? If the series gets extended, last 4 games in 5 nights. Though I doubt that would happen, but hmmm.

    Vile: . . . . Thu, Apr 22, 8:07AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yeah, Dom with 40 saves and Salo looking very Cujo-like. I didn't see Hebert, but they said he was out cold... I thought the Ducks had a chance in that series, but not without Hebert.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Apr 22, 9:02AM PST (-0700 GMT)
No way Guy was out cold. Looked like a light clip to me. We've all taken boots to the noggin now & then. Nasty but hardly a knockout.

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Apr 22, 9:11AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I agree with you smott. Looked like he took the boot right in the impact zone on the forehead of the mask. Cant imagine that doing any damage. Maybe tv was deceiving. Reminded me of the inadvertant roundhouse kick that Jose Theodore took in last years playoffs. Except Jose's kick was waaaaaaay more dangerous.

    Tripp: . . . . Thu, Apr 22, 9:48AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'm proud of Tommy. Not a bad showing in his first playoff game against what may be the deepest team in the league. He really kept the Oil in there. Tough when the shots are 31-12 or whatever, but you know that old playoff cliche... it's not what ya stop, it's what you let in.

    Tripp: . . . . Thu, Apr 22, 9:50AM PST (-0700 GMT)
and ya gotta love playoff hockey, eh? Shot blocking, stitches (just got mine out this morning), 1 goal games.. aah yeah. I was riveted to the games, and with the exception of that Oilers series, I don't even care who wins.

    wolfman: . . . . Thu, Apr 22, 10:00AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey Sieve, do you know your game times at all? Is the arena on woodbine? I might be there if the times are right.

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, Apr 22, 11:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)
yep, its at 90 woodbine down, Rexdale. We play at 9:15ish friday evening, 9:30am and 2:30pm Sat. Will be in the away blue friday and in home whites both games Sat. see you there...........maybe. : >)

    smott: . . . . Thu, Apr 22, 1:28PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Trippster how are you feeling? Hope you're eating better and gaining some weight my friend. I'm a whopping 130 this AM, need to get back to 135 by Wednesday. Should be fun!

    smott: . . . . Thu, Apr 22, 1:30PM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for the winning goal on Salo it looked kind of icky to me...ruined an otherwise stellar performance. Really big Game #2 coming up in Ottawa, they could easily let Dom run away with this series if they don't buckle down. TV said all 5 reg-season games went to OT. Hmmm, I picked a 7-game series, but I'm wondering if I should change my selection of Ottawa winning it! Yikes - hate to pick against Dom...just had a hunch.

Tripp, I talked to Miska today. He is putting final touches on my mask as I type. The one thing I have learned about the whole mask painting thing is that the 2 week turn around is a perfect world situation, figure for more like 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. Todd has really taken care of me though, I'm sure I'll be happy with the end product. On another note for those of you interested in a Cubberly mask, you can call Ed at (973)448-0512. You REALLY get a custom mask from Ed. You have to send him a plaster mold of your face for him to build you a mask that will fit like no other mask you've ever owned. Of course the price tag is hefty but well worth it. I'm calculating how much blood I'll have to sell right now in order to be able to get a mask made HA HA HA

    Tripp: . . . . Thu, Apr 22, 4:04PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hiya smottsie! Well, I dunno how much I've bulked up, but I've been eating like a pig. They have me on 16mg of steroids a day to keep down the inflammation, and it does wonders for the appetite. Thing is, my upper body is so sore and weak that it takes a lot of effort to do simple things. Much more comfortable now that my 75 stitches are in the trash instead of my shoulder/back though. I hope all is well with you. I still send ya the good karma every single day! :-)

    Tripp: . . . . Thu, Apr 22, 4:07PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Ya know, the more I think about it... I should've had a bionic shoulder put in while I was in surgery. That glove side can never be quick enough. I wonder if my insurance would've covered it? Ah well, off to watch the Flyers take the annual springtime gaspipe, and enjoy some goaltending Dafoe-style. G'night everyone!

Hey goalies..... My team(MAHA Midget B Redwings) had an end of the season party at a really nice country club. The room we were in was really nice. The players and the coaches all got to sit at one long table facing the fans..... The coach went up to the mic and talked about our season, cracked a few jokes and talked about each player. Later they announced the MVP of the playoffs. Chris Bentely and myself were named co-winner of the MVP of the playoffs, so both our names are engraved on the trophy..... Chris Bentely and I were the only ones were dressed really sharp, nice it was a country club and all. We both had on blazers, dress shoes, etc. All the other guys were in street clothes, so that was kind of funny..... Overall I had a blast.

    Vile: . . . . Fri, Apr 23, 8:18AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Wow, Beezer really surprised me. One game does not a series make... but it is always better to start with a win. The Dallas paper actually quoted Salo as saying he was more upset by the first goal than the game winner. He was way out of position on the scramble that led to the first goal. The second goal, he was protecting the short side, but Carbo poped it in far side. I wonder if Salo stole Cujo's mojo :)

    smott: . . . . Fri, Apr 23, 8:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well I am sure interested to see how Cujo plays when he's got something to lose for a change. Still did not expect Philly to start strong.

    smott: . . . . Fri, Apr 23, 8:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Meanwhile my Birds make just enough mistakes to let the Devils grab Game One. Sigh. And the NHL now asking to dissolve the franchise. Sigh again.

    C5: . . . . Fri, Apr 23, 3:42PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I've always thought Philly could be dangerous. Beezer is Mr. Playoffs, Mr Level-headed no matter what.

    Tripp: . . . . Fri, Apr 23, 4:42PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'm surprised at the general lack of respect for Philly. I'm still sure they'll gag, as always, but they're still a pretty good team even without Eazy-E. Recchi, Leclair, Brind'amour, Desjardins, Beez, Duschesne helping out the power play... I dunno if they're Cup material (unless Beezer stays unconscious), but there's enough talent there to do damage.

    Tripp: . . . . Fri, Apr 23, 5:12PM PST (-0700 GMT)
And while I'm online inquiring about my mask, I thought I'd pass these two mask painting sites along in case anyone's interested. button and button

    Tripp: . . . . Fri, Apr 23, 8:28PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hhhmm... once again my Oilers give the Stars all they can handle, and still come up short. Salo looking solid again, especially quick with that glove. But solid won't cut it. Gotta steal these games, not keep the team in it. There's gotta be the 2 or 3 big thief saves you have no right making. 2-0 is a miiighty deep hole to crawl out of.

C5, I just read thru some of the backlog and I've got a quick question for you...if leaving your feet and jumping a foot in the air to hit a guy 6" shorter than you isn't a cheap shot, what DO you consider a cheap shot?

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Sun, Apr 25, 11:01PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Of course, the best news is that apparently the Pens can now trade Jagr, and make it deep in the playoffs so they can pay the $20 mil and get out of their lease (heheh)...two in a row with him out!??!!

    wolfman: . . . . Mon, Apr 26, 7:30AM PST (-0700 GMT)

    Vile: . . . . Mon, Apr 26, 7:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Real heart breaker for the Oilers. That aught to have crushed their will to live.

    wolfman: . . . . Mon, Apr 26, 7:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)
To be up 2-0 inthe third and then lose 3-2 is a real heartbreaker.

    Vile: . . . . Mon, Apr 26, 7:35AM PST (-0700 GMT)
RocketGoalie, what is your deffinition of a cheap shot? I started thinking about it myself, and I guess my two pet peeves are cross checks from behind about 3 feet into the boards, the kind that can break your neck, and knee on knee hits, where one player is trying to skate around someone and they throw out a leg to try to stop them. Otherwise, I am personally pretty accepting.

    Sieve: . . . . Mon, Apr 26, 8:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hi Wolfman, the Leafs game was a blast!!! Air Canada center was a morgue (understandably) for the first 58 mins. but those last 2, WOW! Utter pandemonium. Definitely worth the price of admission. VERY nice arena.

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Mon, Apr 26, 8:54AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey goalies..... Got back from Tacoma WA the other day. We played the Tacoma Rockets "AA" team. I played for the Portland Cons(or All-Stars), which is "A, or AA". We lost the first game 5-2, and I faced around 40+ shots. I played damn good in that game. Faced so many scoring chances..... The second game we won 6-2 in a very rough game. There were two fights and the other goalie was begging to get into a fight with me. In this game I faced around 35+ shots. I played my heart out. One of those games it doesn't matter what kind of chance it is, you just stop it. It was great. I wish I had both those games on tape. I refined my game and style..... I can't wait for my try-outs for Jr.A and Jr.B

    Sieve: . . . . Mon, Apr 26, 8:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)

    smott: . . . . Mon, Apr 26, 10:05AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yup HOW ABOUT those 2 late golas for the Leafs? I very nearly turned that game off. 58 mins of Beezer, but not enough. Interesting series.

Hey smott who is your fav goalie? is it still Marty B?

    smott: . . . . Mon, Apr 26, 11:06AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Heh heh well I am a TB fan here in the Burgh. Think he's extremely technically solid as is Roy, Marty, Beezer....but I have the most fun watching the athletic scramblers like Cujo, HAckett, Hasek....so far I don't see any goalies really jumping into the spotlight a la Ollie last year ...maybe Beezer at first but we shall see. Hasek's only had to be normal so far to be up 3-0. WHich is scary.

    Sieve: . . . . Mon, Apr 26, 11:15AM PST (-0700 GMT)

    Vile: . . . . Mon, Apr 26, 11:53AM PST (-0700 GMT)

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Apr 26, 3:06PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Tripp, never heard of the M. Ross painter before. ITECH painter or independant? A lot of the paint jobs offered are ITECH creations and from the read of the site reproduction of those masks is not a problem. I'm just curious since I've found out that most of those guys copyright their creations and other painters refrain from reproduction out of respect and legal aspects. How is Ross price wise and have you had anything done by them?

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Apr 26, 3:22PM PST (-0700 GMT)

    Tripp: . . . . Mon, Apr 26, 8:53PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'm not sure if Marlene Ross is factory authorized by Itech or not. If they painted for guys like Denis, Giguere and Fichaud, I guess they must also do Koho masks... of course, all 3 of those guys wore Itech in juniors, so I dunno. I've never had a mask done by them, but a few of my buddies who played for the 67's had their masks done there, and they were very sharp. That's also a pretty impressive list of NHL designs they've got there. I'll have to see if I can dig up an e-mail address

lo all.... been out a while here..... playoffs take on my yotes..... They have looked solid for about three periods so far in the playoffs..... Just so happens that they were the sat third and OT and the first on sunday.... I think Tkchoke better come to the forefront in game four tomorrow or the momentum swing may push the blues over the top..... 1-12 on the power play on sunday is horrific.... But I've now been to two whiteout games and am hooked.... The arena rocks!!!!! I took some pictures and will get them to c5 when the film is developed.... As for my picks.... west appears to be headed on the right track (except for the blues yotes series which hinges on tuesdays game I believe) In the east my sabres look great just pounding the sens... Leafs pull one out tonight. And I did not pick the canes or pens but would like to see defoe and the devils sitting out early.... Defoe out = Vez for Dom.... Devils out = bye bye to the too cocky marty..... Trying to get a Goalies Domain sign for saturdays game.... Over Boolin's right shoulder.... If I have the time to finish it LETS GO COYOTES!!!!!!

Well, back from Montreal. After an 11-1 laugher in the opener, we strung together 5-2, 5-3, 5-1 wins to win our division. YAY! I guess they were hard up for the MVP, so they took the safe route and picked the goalie...More good news, my Sat A team swept the finals without me, so that makes for a championship with that team. My Tues team lost on the weekend 4-1 without me, I am back in the pipes tonight trying to stave off elimination.

Did you know if NJ and Ottawa go down, that leaves T.O. with home ice? Man I would love a Leafs/Wings final, a good ol' original 6 tilt. And both teams have good uniforms to boot...

Interesting night. Roller league started. Played 2 games. Won 2-1 and 3-1. The 2-1 game was against the defending champs. Should be an interesting season. Leading the league in penalty minutes due to a little altercation with someone who decided the crease was his. I got 2 for slashing, 5 for fighting, and 2 for unsportsmanlike when I reached over the ref to give this guy a taste of my blocker. Guess I was lucky to not get suspended.

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Apr 28, 9:57AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sheesh... what a game. My Oilers give another gritty effort, and once again cough up a lead and come up short by one lousy goal. I really hope the Oilers keep Salo next season. I must say, Belfour did his part. 37 saves, and every OT save is a biggie. No such thing as a routine save in the playoffs. The Colorado/Detwah/Dallas series should be a dandy.

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Apr 28, 10:03AM PST (-0700 GMT)
...and totally non-goalie related ranting here. IF Sandy McCarthy lied about what Domi said, he should be suspended. I'm so sick of frustrated athletes using "alleged" racism as excuses. I know it's the hyper-sensitive PC 90's, but this isn't just name calling. If Domi said it, he's a complete knucklehead... if he didn't, McCarthy should be forced to apologize and get a 2 gamer from the league.

    Vile: . . . . Wed, Apr 28, 10:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmm, not 40+ saves for Eddie then... oh well. It was 2 in the morning when that game finally ended. The Western Semifinals are shaping up to incredible. I wonder if Phx is using the chance to pummel Dallas as their motivation? I give up on trying to figure out the east.

hehehe Sieve, yes if you get Chris to do that erase my Sens pick and Ducks upset.... thought they'd put up more of a fight.. consesus at the por-shop on the Sens... too many european players - cant take the intense physical tempo of playoff games....

    Tripp: . . . . Wed, Apr 28, 2:00PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Quick question for you guys... how much more durable are the titanium cages than the wires? Are we talking big time difference? Enough to justify the $200 price tag? The hardest shots I face are probably mid 90's, so if I really get tagged, I get the occasional bent cage. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the two types, and if it's worth the coin.

    fourqts: . . . . Wed, Apr 28, 4:57PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I think they are maketing the titanium as lighter, harder, and stronger... The weight savings would be pretty significant and no more bent cages.... And in response to vile.... Yes I think the Yotes are using the carrot og getting to pummel Hatcher as motivation..... 1). everyone counted them out in the first round when JR goes down. 2). Dallas punked out and rested all the big boys when the yotes would have a chance to pay the stars back (although Sydor did take a few solid rights from Tkchoke in the game). 3.) I think alot of the players knew they would be looking for work next season if they lost in the first round (Tkchoke, Roenick, Drake, and Corky were all mentioned). I think those are the main reasons for the Yotes pulling together.... Again one more win then WAR 97 is on and even if Dallas wins the series, they will be so beat up that the Stars/ Avs winner will roll

    4: . . . . Wed, Apr 28, 5:35PM PST (-0700 GMT)
sorry wings avs winner will roll

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Wed, Apr 28, 5:41PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Vile - I don't know if I can really "define" cheap shots. I guess I'd start by saying if you do something that's an attempt to injure or with disregard for a guy's (or gal's) safety, that's a cheap shot.

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Wed, Apr 28, 5:44PM PST (-0700 GMT)
But it definitely includes what what Hatcher did...why in the world would a guy skate as fast as he can then jump a foot in the air to hit a guy 6" shorter and 30 lbs lighter...except to slam as hard as possible into the guy for the revenge he admitted he was going to get? That's why there's a rule against leaving your feet!

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Wed, Apr 28, 5:47PM PST (-0700 GMT)
...the other cheap shot pet peave I've got now is slew-footing...too many guys getting serious knee injuries from it.

Yes I am picking Wings to do it all. Wings-Avs will be the big series, and unless significant personnell gets injured, the winner of that should take the Cup. Of course, I picked Ottawa.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Apr 29, 6:57AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm yes 37 saves for Belfour over what, like 6 periods? Yup that's about average for Ed-do! :-D

Hey goalies..... The spring league started yesterday..... Each team has two goalies. I had to share the ice time with the other goalie. It was 3-1 when I went in, and it ended up 5-5 at the end of the game. I played awful. It's pretty strange. The main reason I think I played poorly is because I didn't feel like playing, didn't care, lower skill level and I had nothing to prove..... The good thing is I have two of my old team mates on the team. The whole league is filled with bantams that are moving up to midgets. We have four midget division players on our team, including me..... I get to play for free because I was one of the first goalies to sign up..... I'm going to play out for the next game. To get the blood pumping again..... I am trying to decside if I should stop playing in the spring league. I don't really feel like playing hockey year round. I don't want to play in a lower level and for it to mess up my style and confidence. The tricks I use in "AA" don't work in this level. The game is too slow..... So what I am going to do is play in goal until I play a really great game. Then I'll step down and relax for the summer until I have the try-outs. Any comments? ..... One of the biggest reasons I want to do this is to keep the "hunger" alive. You know what I mean.

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Thu, Apr 29, 10:29AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I guess the thing I'd like to add is that how to you get into a slump, and how to you get out of one? It seems weird but I don't know why I can't be consistent. It's really driving me nuts. I just can't stay consistent. Maybe it's my work ethic or something. Maybe I don't have the "hunger" or something..... I only play my best when I need to be. That is why I didn't play well in that game. I didn't feel like playing and I didn't care..... Does anyone have any advice on how to be consistent and rebound from a slump? I just need to focus.

    Vile: . . . . Thu, Apr 29, 10:56AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Good call, RocketGoalie. Slew footing is nasty too.

    wolfman: . . . . Thu, Apr 29, 11:18AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Vile Iwas trying to emailyou but it wont go thru.

    Vile: . . . . Thu, Apr 29, 12:55AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yeah, sorry... my company's email is down

    smott: . . . . Thu, Apr 29, 1:22PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well GH if you really didn't feel like being on the ice I wouldn't take a poor performance that much to heart. Nobody plays too well when they'd really rather be someplace else.

    smott: . . . . Thu, Apr 29, 1:24PM PST (-0700 GMT)
On the other hand, goalies who are inconsistent may not being paying enough attention to boring details like positioning, technique and hard work. Maybe relying a bit too much on athletic skills, talent and reflexes. Which, unfortunately can only take you so far. If you're really experiencing poor consistency, go back to your fundamentals and work on them, hard. ANd don't be afraid to get as much advice as you can from goalie coaches you trust.

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Thu, Apr 29, 3:06PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott..... Well it's hard to get pumped up for "Summer hockey". Since it's not competitive and the guys are out there for fun, not a challenge. I only play well when I am challenge. Sort of like how Patrick Roy plays his best in the playoffs..... I take hockey seriously and I think playing summer is not for me since it's not a big deal. Like I said I'll play a few more times until my best game and then stop until the try-outs. It's not a big deal because the summer league for me is free.

    GoalieHawk: . . . . Thu, Apr 29, 3:15PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Smott..... I guess it's been such a long time since I've played a bad game. It really bothers me..... I know the reason why I played bad. I shouldn't let it get to me. It's just summer hockey.

    Tom: . . . . Thu, Apr 29, 3:40PM PST (-0700 GMT)

    gbfreeman: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 0:47AM PST (-0700 GMT)
My scrub team took out the #1 seed tonight and we took the championship 3-1. Had to make about 4 really good saves. Got our trophies and then, the 2 best defensemen and myself quit the team. Achieved the desired goal and now it is time to scale back from 4+ teams down to 2. Actually have time off now

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 5:26AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Morning goalies, I need your opinions please. Took a shot in the mask last night that put a 1.5 in. crack in the cheek of my Eddy GT. Still seems strong. I'm thinking its still okay to use. waddaya think? Also, anyone know where I can find Eddy Warranty info? thanks.

    gbfreeman: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 7:35AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Any significant crack in a helmet will reduce the overall integrity of the whole. It may still seem strong, however, the force you are able to apply (with your hands and what not) is negligible compared to the impact force possible when the puck hits the mask. Continued use IMO would be putting yourself at personal risk. A good shot to the area could cause further damage to the mask and possibly your face. If you contact the manufacturer, you can bet they will want you to buy a new one. One thing you may want to do is go to a marine supply store and talk to someone there about fiberglass repair kits for boats. You may be able to adapt the kit for your use.

    smott: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 7:36AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm don't know about warranty info but I would NOT play with a mask that is cracked. It simply will not displace energy next time it gets hit, so I would n't take any chances. This is one more reason to get a Pro-Masque, Matt will replace the mask for free if it cracks. You basically pay for the mask once and that's it. Give a call.

    smott: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 7:37AM PST (-0700 GMT)
    Wow, hi gb! Congrats....

Okay, discovered why my company's email is down... they forgot to pay the bill :) Seriously, the head of telecom quit, and the bill apparently got lost in the changeover... I just found the whole thing funny, seeing how I work for a bank :) So my email should be up in 36-48 hours, which is the time it takes to replicate the information aftger they turn us back on :)

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 8:32AM PST (-0700 GMT)
thanks for your input gb and smott. Smotts, didnt you play with a broken mask before your PM came in? Does anyone know if Eddy is still in business? I might have heard that they are not.... hmm.

    Tripp: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 10:12AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sieve, be careful man. I've seen cracks way smaller than the one your mask took that have really gotten shattered with a good impact. It really doesn't take too much if the puck hits right at the fracture point.

    smott: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 10:58AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sieve, yep I played with a cracked Itech and sorry I did. Got really stung 2 or 3 times, the mask just did not absorb impact any more. It needs to be all one piece to properly distribute forces. Recommend new mask ASAP. And I've been very happy with my P-M.

    smott: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 11:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
CATSFIVE here's a Pete SMith update on the Barrasso pads...BUcky says Pete is not in business for himself any more. Supposedly won't even make them for Barrasso now (though I dispute that - those pads TB was in look very new...) Smith is now working for some outfit in the Niagara Falls area. You might call around there - or better yet try conatctign the Pens directly. ALso, there is the old stand by, our friend Ziggy in Johnstown PA(I have his nbr if you need it), he has good connections and may be able to help you. Though he has been known to be slow in responding heh heh heh.....GOOD LUCK!

    smott: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 11:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Bucky finished re-furbishing my Lousivilles, my goodness but don't they look shiny & spiffy & new! And black, unfortunately.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 11:22AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Tripp, the titanium cages are real nice but the price tag is high. You do get a lighter cage that is stronger than stainless steel and less likely to bend over time. But we all know that everything can be broken so who is to say titanium, given the right circumstances, won't bend, but the odds are low. I've found the stainless steel cages to be the strongest over regular steel cages. My PM cage finially bent slightly after several repeated hits but I know a steel cage would of bent sooner. Best method to determine what the cages is made of is to use a magnet. If it sticks to the cage it's steel, it won't be attracted to Stainless.

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 11:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sieve, sorry to hear the mask cracked on you. Strange place for a crack too. Did you take a side shot? Now that the mask is cracked it offers you no real protection since the structural integrity has been compromised. Repair shouldn't be a consideration since to do so would require more work and money than the mask is worth and no real guarentee as to the strength of the finished product. I have to concur with Smott on this one. Matter of fact I helped her decide on a Pro-Masque some time back and she is happy with it to date. While I did have a bad experience with getting my mask painted through PM, I have nothing but good things to say about the quality of the mask itself. PM come standard with Stainless steel cages and the finish on the mask is very chip resistant. A very good buy in my book for the money spent. Check PM out and give Matt a call to get the 5 cent tour of what he offers. I think you will be convinced.

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 1:43PM PST (-0700 GMT)
yeah, these things happen CdP. Which PM do you have? Classique, or the Vac one? If I get a new one, it'll be a PM just based on the rave reviews around here. I might go back to the ol' bucket till I decide what to do.

    Sieve: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 1:49PM PST (-0700 GMT)
BTW, the shot was a side shot. Was down and stacked, shot off the pads and had my head turned searching for it. Saw the wind up out of my peripheral but still got me on the side. To the mask's credit, I didnt feel a thing. Hearing will be coming back anytime now... WHAT????? : >O

    Tom: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 2:03PM PST (-0700 GMT)
    Anyone on?

    Tom: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 2:06PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Oh well....... Sieve, I know you have enough advice, but I'd consider the size of the crack, if it seems bigg enough, no, but if it is just a deep scratch on the side, I'd just fix it...

    Carpe de Puck: . . . . Fri, Apr 30, 3:32PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sieve, I have the Classique being painted and a Vac-pac loaner. the only notable difference I can detect is in weight, the vac pac has some carbon fibre in it so it's a little bit lighter nothing drastic. I recommend the classique since the price difference is notable compared to the Vac-pac but it's plenty tuff.

    fourqts: . . . . Sat, May 1, 0:23AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sieve.... Just a little info on Pro-masque.... Simmons has the "Air 2000" Pro masque for $259.99 USD.... When I emailed Pro masque they told me that Simmons has their standard mask..... So the obvious next question was why is it that you want more than they do for the same mask.... and their reply is that they do not under cut their distributers..... So my advice would be to have PM tell you the size you need, then order from simmons and save the $70

    fourqts: . . . . Sat, May 1, 0:27AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yotes Lose in OT..... 2-1..... Right after the ref's let the blues (what looked like) run boolin...... Damn call the penalty like you would in the first period already....

    fourqts: . . . . Sat, May 1, 2:11AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Just a little info on gear at good prices.... Those looking at Bauer gear (pants especially r-6's that geet good chat reviews) may want to check out button at there is quite a bit of bauer gear at what seems very good pricing

    Tom: . . . . Sat, May 1, 8:11AM PST (-0700 GMT)
    Hello?

    Tom: . . . . Sat, May 1, 7:28PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I was wondering, why did Sutter (Shark's coach) put Sheilds in during a tied series. I don't think it was smart. If the Sharks had a 3-1 lead that works, but now Colorado is one away. I always liked Sheilds, but I don't think he had a chance against CO. Is it just me?

    Tom: . . . . Sat, May 1, 7:36PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I also don't think this aa a yeAR for goalies, but that might just be me used to goalies doing better, I guess you can say it is ok with the OT3 game in the Dallas series, but 6-1 & 7-3 with a guy like Roy (Sorry Smott, but he's got too cups) gives up 7 & Boston, Carolina, Toronto all gave up easy goals too

    smott: . . . . Sat, May 1, 7:56PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Actually with the exception of Cujo, I think there has been a lot of stink-up-the-joint goaltending so far. Beezer's cost Philly 2 already. Roy had a couple weak outings. Fuhr's whiffing on flyballs. Marty has been average. In the last 2 games, TB has been perfectly awful (though excellent in games 2 & 3). But really inconsistent stuff so far.

    smott: . . . . Sat, May 1, 7:56PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I know, I know, Ozzie and Eddie are unscathed so far. Neither really tested yet.

    smott: . . . . Sat, May 1, 7:57PM PST (-0700 GMT)
And yes what the heck was Shields doing in there tonight? Vernie injured?....He held up well for awhile.

    Guardian: . . . . Sun, May 2, 6:02AM PST (-0700 GMT)
If Pete Smith is working for an outfit in the Niagra Falls area, it is most likely for Simmons. Awhile back they were selling "Pete Smith Air Discipline" pads, the only outfit I saw doing so. Maybe he's making those Simmons pads now?

    Guardian: . . . . Sun, May 2, 6:04AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Then you'll get the joy of dealing with the Simmons's staff and their bad attitudes.

    Tripp: . . . . Sun, May 2, 10:31AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Tough to exclude Hasek, smottsie. He was awesome when he had to be against the Sens. IMO, Buffalo was really outplayed in the first two games and he was easily the difference

    smott: . . . . Sun, May 2, 1:22PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yah maybe Tripp, though I don't always equate outplayed with outshot...though I didn't see much of games 1 & 2 I'll admit. Actually the only teams I give a chance against anyone in the West are Buff and Leafs, primarily because of goaltending.

    Tripp: . . . . Sun, May 2, 7:47PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well they were definitely outshot... but some of the saves were real beauties, and at big times. Ottawa never really got to establish any momentum at all. And Cujo Cujo Cujo.... ya gotta be lucky and good. He was a whole lotta both tonight.

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Sun, May 2, 8:57PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Sieve - I've had a couple Eddie's for roller...played ice in one of them and it cracked really fast so I won't do that again...but they work fine for roller. I played in the cracked one every now and then in roller and didn't had any problems but when I went to the top leagues I quit playing in it because those guys shoot too hard.

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Sun, May 2, 8:59PM PST (-0700 GMT)
The last I heard, Eddie sold his business to a company called Edge that has since gone under but Eddie is back making masks. So if you bought one more than 2 years ago, it's probably pre-Edge and there's no warranty anymore.

    RocketGoalie: . . . . Sun, May 2, 9:03PM PST (-0700 GMT)
But if you bought it in the last year or so, you can try him at his old place: 131 Citation Drive, Unit 19; Concord, Ontario, Canada L4K 2R3. But his warranties weren't much when I got his stuff...60 days...so unless that's changed you might be out of luck.

    smott: . . . . Mon, May 3, 8:58AM PST (-0700 GMT)
    HOW AOUT THEM PENS??????

    smott: . . . . Mon, May 3, 8:59AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Heh heh wow what a finish. Given that that game was likely the last Pens game ever at the Civic ARena, how appropriate that Jagr scores the winner in OT.

    smott: . . . . Mon, May 3, 9:00AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Watching that OT was very hard. For Game 7, I think I will have to take a couple of my sedatives.... :-D

    smott: . . . . Mon, May 3, 9:01AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm, those big Devils D may have little respect for the Euro-influence Pens, but they sure look cumbersome and slow when they get tired at the end of a game. Meanwhile Straka and Kovalev are flying around like a couple of gnats. Good goaltending at both ends for a change. Thought Marty was going to steal it. But Jagr says no.

    smott: . . . . Mon, May 3, 9:03AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Speaking of steal, is Cujo a bandit lately or what?? Hard for a Pens fan to feel sorry for Philly, but I do feel bad for Beezer. He didn't give up many goals, just gave up the real crushing ones unfortunately. Meanwhile Cujo is standing on his ear down the other end, or having his D make skate saves for him. Lucky & good, tough to beat.

    smott: . . . . Mon, May 3, 9:04AM PST (-0700 GMT)
And will the Pups cough up another 3-1 lead??? I confess I picked St Loo, but the prospect of a Yotes-Stars bloodbath is interesting in a car-accident-carnage sort of way....

    gbfreeman: . . . . Mon, May 3, 10:17AM PST (-0700 GMT)
smott, speaking of car accidents Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Steve Chiasson was killed early Monday when his pickup overturned. Police suspect he may have been drinking.

    fourqts: . . . . Mon, May 3, 3:18PM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for the Yotes choking it away...... Well, we'll just see... Tocc has been non-existant in the series..... maybe he steps it up this game.... Diduck back and playing well it seems.... Boolin standing on head, but team letting the third man in knock it in after two huge saves by the boolin wall. Hmmmm which teams will show up in game seven.... It has been a very good series though... But the Dallas Yote blood bath would be nice to see. I won't make a prediction on the game seven score, but believe that it is a must win for the captain, even though he has done everything else in the series... He needs to pound a couple in and win the series or i think his days are numbered.

    z-man: . . . . Mon, May 3, 3:29PM PST (-0700 GMT)
4qts, I was in Phoenix for game 5 and it was quite a game! I don't care much for the arena though. Too cramped. I felt bad for all of the people stuck in the parking garage after the game, it looked like a traffic mess. On street parking there is the only way to go. I went skating at the Ice Chalet and Oceanside, and they are not too bad. I drove out to the Ice Den to check it out - Man is that place far out in Scottsdale. I used to work at the Hilton on Scottsdale and Lincoln and I thought that that was far. I saw a nice roller rink on McClintock/Hayden outdoors called the Rink, that looked like a nice place to play on a mild night. One other thing about Phoenix, I carried my skates on in my bag, and they tore through it because they don't recognize skates on the x-ray, they were curious as to what they were! Also, I am not too impressed with the exterior look of the BOB.

    fourqts: . . . . Mon, May 3, 3:45PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Z- The den is way out there but is very nice to play at.... Will not be so far away as freeway is running right next door soon... As for parking.... You were here on a good night.... It is really bad on a Baseball and hockey or Bball night.... Get there really early and plan to be there for a while afterwards. As for the look of the BOB... I think it looks like a huge airplane hangar.... UGLY. but is nice inside.... AS for AWA... Remember that it is designed as a very intimate b-ball arena... Very hard to follow the puck from the top. But basketball is easy to see big orange ball. I had a hatcher sign up in front of my seats.... but it was not to be that night (or sunday)... Was funny said "Hatcher, One more win and you get to paint ou your new number" then had a dallas jersey with a big red target painted on it.... Everyone there liked it. but the lose in ot.

    Tom: . . . . Mon, May 3, 4:08PM PST (-0700 GMT)

Nevermind, I read all the stuff since3 I have nothing to do, so you all know I did not make the NMU team, but I came close, (I haven't been around since all the college stuff, I'm finally geting settled)

    snowman: . . . . Mon, May 3, 6:10PM PST (-0700 GMT)
I heard the reason Sheilds played was due to the fact that it was a back to back game. Coach gamble to put a well rested Sheilds in instead of a "maybe tired" Vernon. Didnt work too well

    Vile: . . . . Tue, May 4, 8:33AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I thought the Sharks play pretty well last night. They really seemed to out play the Avs most of the overtime... but it just takes one goal.

    Sieve: . . . . Tue, May 4, 1:51PM PST (-0700 GMT)
hi all, just back from NYC. Thanks for all the tips/info on masks. That Simmons/Pro-masque deal seems odd, but as long as Matt stands behind the mask no matter where it is purchased... Would certainly rather purchase direct, but heck, $70 is $70. Wonder if you can custom order a solid color from Simmons (doubt it), but will have to call them. Thinking deep blue...

    Sieve: . . . . Tue, May 4, 1:55PM PST (-0700 GMT)
vile, I only saw the first half of the SJ game but looked the other way around to me. SJ had a tough time getting the PP going, and a few ugly turnovers. They must have got it going a bit in the second half, eh? Either way they are golfing. Too bad about Chiasson also, wonder if 'Canes will catch any heat for having beer on the plane?

    Sieve: . . . . Tue, May 4, 1:59PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Rocketgoalie, thanks for the info. Where did your Eddy crack? Just curious...

Hell of a game 7...... 1-0 ot loss by coyotes.... Boolin had a hell of a game.... make that a hell of a series.... just ran out of bodies in the ot period.... Good luck to the blues and I hope they put hatcher on a stretcher

    PM: . . . . Wed, May 5, 0:06AM PST (-0700 GMT)

    sorry was 4qts not pm

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, May 5, 7:33AM PST (-0700 GMT)
4qt, yeh, I know its a no brainer, I'm just not fond of Simmons. Also, they only offer Black or White. Sorry about your prarie dogs... I didnt think ol' Grant had it in him anymore.

    smott: . . . . Wed, May 5, 7:46AM PST (-0700 GMT)
WOOO HOOO HOW BOUT MY BIRDS????

    smott: . . . . Wed, May 5, 7:48AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Goodness but they played with a lot of heart and poor NJ was just on it's heels and tentative. Lots of turnovers. But few shots 4 of 13 on Marty, ouch. I think the Pens were a bit of a sleeper, had a lot of injuries last month, and went 2-9-2 or something. Before that they were 1 pt off the Devils. Once they got healthy, there was a lot less difference in the two teams. But the Devils were really tight the whole series.

    smott: . . . . Wed, May 5, 7:49AM PST (-0700 GMT)
ANd OW sorry about your Pups 4q...what a tough loss....yes Boolin looked really solid but never seemed to get the help he needed clearing the slot....is this the end for Schoeny? And also Ftorek in NJ?

    smott: . . . . Wed, May 5, 7:50AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Well my picks in the West turned out 4 of 4....but Ottawa killed me in teh East, and I confess I picked NJ.....but I'll trade a Pens' win for a lost pick any day!

    smott: . . . . Wed, May 5, 7:51AM PST (-0700 GMT)
And too bad about CHaisson....said he was doing 74 in a 55 on a dark road, ejected from the vehicle? No seatbelt I guess. What a shame.

yes smott, nice job willing your Pens into the second round. How would you like to see a 2 on O Straka/Jagr break coming your way?!? I think it was 3rd goal. Straka scored it following Marty's stop on Jagr. whew!

    Sieve: . . . . Wed, May 5, 8:47AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Looks like they are going to start the WINGS/avs series on Friday. Thats gotta be one of the longest breaks between rounds ever. what, 9 days? ugh... Hope Wings can maintain their momentum.

    smott: . . . . Wed, May 5, 10:20AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Yes poor Mary looking up to see Jags/Straka. what a horrible line change, could've been my C-league! But the real killer was Kovalev's 5-hole.

    smott: . . . . Wed, May 5, 10:22AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm, Wings Avs....I guess I have to go with the Wings but now's when it really gets interesting eh? I wouldn't worry about Wings momentum, they always seem to build slowly throughout the playoffs. Can't wait to see these goalie matchups. ROy-OZ, Fuhr-Eddie, Byron-Dom, TB-Cujo. Love it!

five for eight in picks for second round. All in east except NJ. Missed on sharks and coyotes in west. Taking it easy this season in Roller. Moving more to ice. Playing for only 2 teams in roller this season. Playing for one team in ice and weekly pickup games. Days off. Wow, what a concept. Faced my first penalty shot in ice last sunday. Stoned him. Gave him the five hole all the way in and closed up when he shot. Lost the game 5-1 so I gotta take the little victories. My ice team isn't that good (1-3), I think I am playing like crap and they keep raving about how I am keeping them in games. Sometimes I just don't get it.

As much as I'm looking forward to the Avs/Wings, I'm really jazzed for that Leafs/Pens series. Some serious speed, flow and goaltending there. I'm officially on the Marty Straka bandwagon. He gets overshadowed by Jags, but he's been super. And who will crack first, Byron or Dom? Ya gotta think Boston will play a much nastier style than Ottawa and really try to disrupt Hasek. Lotsa 2-1 games in store?

    smott: . . . . Wed, May 5, 1:47PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm I honestly don't know who to pick in the East, think either series could go either way. I think Cujo is playing better than TB however he's going to see some more dangerous sniping than he did with Philly. Straka really on fire, makes you wonder how he didn't catch on in the NHL until now. Just part of the Pen's band of almost-has-beens. Lots of desire.

    smott: . . . . Wed, May 5, 1:48PM PST (-0700 GMT)
In the West I guess you have to go with Dallas, but Avs Wings is a battle all the way. Just hope the winner isn't too beat up to knock off the Stars!

    smott: . . . . Wed, May 5, 1:49PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Good going on teh PS gb! GIve'em something, then take it away! No worries about the losses, sometimes those games are helpful to keep you sharp. I have actually come to enjoy my weekly shellackings, then when I play for my more competitive C and B teams, it seems easy.

    Beatts: . . . . Wed, May 5, 4:27PM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hey smott...Looks like our teams are about to do battle !! Good Luck to both teams...Lets hope the loser dosen't bitch and whine like Ed Snider !!

    Toast: . . . . Wed, May 5, 8:00PM PST (-0700 GMT)
WEll, I guess I was 7-1 for the first round, only got Pgh wrong. Who'd thunk it? Anyway, second round, let me see the crystal ball. Well, after SJ gave the Avs fits, I think the Wings are going to take them in six. Something wrong in Colorado, might be a chemistry thing. As for Dallas/St Louis - the Stars will slip by. Scores will be close, the series won't. Out East, Dom Dom Dom...he has the Bruins number. As for Buds/Pens...um, I think a coaches nightmare. I like Toronto's chances in a wide open series, which it could be.

As for me, summer season opened on Tuesday with a 7-4 win, I played like crap. Too much rust, amazing what one game in 10 days does to the legs. Ah well, Thursday league opens tomorrow, plus organised shinny once a week. Three times a week on the ice, I should get the legs going again soon. Season runs for 16 weeks.

    Toast: . . . . Wed, May 5, 8:04PM PST (-0700 GMT)
But the league on Tuesdays is interesting, a few guys back from Europe so the pace was quick. Took me a little while to get readjusted. However, only a couple ringers per team, so it isn't like all teams are rolling in young guns. Good for me though, makes for a good work btween the pipes.

    Vile: . . . . Thu, May 6, 8:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I'm going to go with the Avs over the Wings. Colorado is nicely warmed up, but the Wings barely broke a sweat in their openning round. I predict 6 either way. I give up on the East. It's a push, but I wouldn't be surprised anymore to see the lower seats continue to triumph.

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, May 6, 10:33AM PST (-0700 GMT)
ooooooh, I'll take that action. Even with Ranford starting game 1... Ozzie - still has sore knee from gm.4 w/ Ducks

    fourqts: . . . . Thu, May 6, 11:26AM PST (-0700 GMT)
6-2 in first rounds.... Pups and devils... As for the coaching changes... Schon.... out I think... Anemic powerplay all season and never changed much... Series was controled by yotes inability on the PP... St Lou could take runs all the time and not fear being short manned. During the las two I would have declined any penalties if i had the choice.... LOL So I say Schon is toast... Local reporter was talking about bowman wanting to come here, But I think he was full of it... Scotty happy in motor city. but who to get. As for devils coach, I think he is safe for right now... opened uop game and just didn't have horses to run and gun with a wide open team like Pens (or leafs) but would have done well anywhere else in playoffs. So I think he stays.

    fourqts: . . . . Thu, May 6, 11:28AM PST (-0700 GMT)
I think losing OzBad does nothing to the wings and they roll Colorado... Like I've said I think they win in spite of him at times

    fourqts: . . . . Thu, May 6, 11:34AM PST (-0700 GMT)
As for picks.... Stay with who I think has the Go in the East... Leafs and Sabres. then next round is cujo dom duel... whoever plays the better series gets to the finals. West I think Wings roll as in last post due to something wrong with avs.... not sure what and only caught one series game, and Dallas wins other series.... St. Lou cannot give Dallas as many penalties as they gave to Phx... Dallas would not decline them. West Finals are a tossup.... Can Eddie keep himself together? Can the Wings continue to win in spite of tending? I pick Dallas... Then I'll break the chat feelings and pick buffalo to win finals..... I had picked Avs to win it all and I think they could beat Dom in the Finals.... But not sure Stars or Wings can.... I think if he makes it to the finals, Dom will put on a clinic much like he did in the Olympics.... We'll all be wondering how he keeps the ice shavings off of the plexiglass behind him.

    Sieve: . . . . Thu, May 6, 12:23AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Bowman to Phx??? no way, he's on the verge of retirement. And if not he's got everyone here fooled...

    smott: . . . . Fri, May 7, 8:58AM PST (-0700 GMT)
Hmmm, picks, well out West no sweat with Stars and Wings, I agree with Toastee that something's not right with Avs. Out east, I guess I have to go with Buff, though Byron seems to be playing like he has something to prove if last night was an example. I'm too superstitious to pick between my Pens and the Leafs, but I do feel Cujo's just playing too well, and Leafs showed they can win a tight-checkign series if they have to which doesn't bode well for my Birds....
