Chris: . . . . Sun, Mar 7, 1:46PM PST (-0700 GMT) Just cleared the log. Thanks to C5, we
now have 13 chat banners randomly being inserted on the top of the chat
page :P Also, if you're interested in posting news, drop me a
line...
C5: . . . . Sun, Mar 7, 3:03PM PST (-0700 GMT) Penguinos just lost
on what looked like a super-bad goal let in by Skudra. I'd like to jump to
his defense by saying that personally, as a goalie, it's really hard
playing for a team that wears black, especially their pants. The
hard-angle shot came across and around the back of the D, and from the
goalie's perspective, I'm sure the puck was lost somewhere for most of the
puck's flight. With all the teams wearing black, maybe it's time we took a
cue from roller hockey and made the pucks fluorescent orange?
C5: . . . . Sun, Mar 7, 3:06PM PST (-0700 GMT) Last game I played
every one of my D had black pants. Similar shot, D in front, clearing the
shot, offense comes in and is forced outside by 2nd D, guy shoots one of
the most amazing shots I've (n)ever seen up, across the both D, and across
me, into the top shelf FAR side. Saw a blur, but never enough to tell if
it was high or low or wide or what. Very difficult to save.
C5: . . . . Sun, Mar 7, 3:14PM PST (-0700 GMT) I have been asked to
join that AA team that I was filling in with this past season! They won
their AA division, which means they're getting bumped up to AAA-2! OK, so
it's not as good as getting a try-out letter, but I'm pretty stoked!
Vile: . . . . Sun, Mar 7, 3:36PM PST (-0700 GMT) Well, played my
first scrimmage Friday night. I really won the new goalie lottery. This
team is everything I could hope for. All veterans, with eyes for defense,
and no egos crowding the ice. The figured out pretty quickly they had
better not allow a bunch of shots my way.
Vile: . . . . Sun, Mar 7, 3:41PM PST (-0700 GMT) They figured... I
did pretty well. I was happy with my performance. I wore myself out during
the warmups. But after I told my team I had never played on ice before,
they were pleasantly surprised I stopped anything. I really pissed off one
of the opponents with a "glove just happened to be in the right
place" save. He moaned about it the rest of the game. I had a blast
:)
Vile: . . . . Sun, Mar 7, 3:44PM PST (-0700 GMT) Gardienne, I was
supposed to have a coach on this Instructional team, but so far nothing.
If you could stop by and give me some advice/tips/drills, I would REALLY
appreciate it. Let me know on email, nviles@gfbank.com
Tripp: . . . . Sun, Mar 7, 6:53PM PST (-0700 GMT) Congrats on
surviving your first ice time. Just 2 things. # 1.) Great glove saves are
NEVER just because your glove was in the right place. You were either
lightning-quick, or chalk it up to positioning :-D #2.) You wore yourself
out in warmups? Haha.. ohhh man. In that case, you'd be aghast at my
half-assed warmups. Mostly I concentrate on skating and stretching. Then I
take one or two rounds standing up at the top of the crease to get a feel
for my angles, one round with my back to the crossbar to sharpen my
reflexes, and one or two rounds where I try to stop everything like I
would in a game. I just think that my footwork and legs need that warmup,
not my hands. I know I dog it, but after reading your post I REALLY feel
lazy. But the way I see it, I've never played a game where goals in
warmups went up on the scoreboard... so as long as I feel good, I don't
sweat it.
Tripp: . . . . Sun, Mar 7, 7:07PM PST (-0700 GMT) ...and yeah. I'd
like to make an excuse for Skudra too, but in the NHL, that shot has got
to be stopped. It just goes to show that you need 60:00 of concentration.
He played really well except for that one mistake. Sakic's goal was pretty
much unstoppable. Even though I still have my doubts about the Rangers
making the playoffs, Richter was awesome today. Dafoe looked good, but
today was Richter's day. Biron and Beezer both looked good tonight. Really
intense game. I'd love to see another Sabres/Flyers matchup in the first
round.
C5: . . . . Sun, Mar 7, 8:28PM PST (-0700 GMT) Tripp, I agree, ya
gotta play 60 minutes. In practice lately I have been practicing clearing
the puck to the corners. No, not rebounds. The ones I stop, I look down
and try to find them. I have been losing sight of too many pucks. I notice
that in each of the goalie pix I post the goalie's eyes seem to be LOCKED
on the puck. I used to have TERRIBLE stick placement, but now I rarely get
beat low five hole when my stick's supposed to be there. Keeping my eye on
the puck even in close is what I'm working on next.
Tripp: . . . . Sun, Mar 7, 9:43PM PST (-0700 GMT) Ya know, cutting
your sticks to that Fiset pattern may help even more with the stick
placement, C5. I used to have my own pattern made by Koho, and eveything
felt great. Then an AHL goalie friend of mine got traded to a different
organ-i-zation and gave me a bunch of his Bauer sticks. He's about
5'9", I'm 6'-6'1", but how could I turn down 20 free sticks...ya
know? So I thought I'd just use em for street hockey, or at practice. But
it totally threw my placement out of whack. I keep my blocker right at the
level of the knee roll in my goal pad. With these other sticks, the blade
wouldn't sit flush and I found a few pucks sneaking under the toe of my
stick.
Tripp: . . . . Sun, Mar 7, 9:56PM PST (-0700 GMT) Another little
trick is to measure the blade of your stick from heel to toe. Then put a
little mark exactly in the middle of the blade. Wrap a piece of easily
visible tape around the mark. When you're in your stance, the tape should
be right between your skates, lined up with your chin and the center of
your body. If everything is lined up, you've got good stick placement, and
your blocker should be in the correct postion. I did it to every single
one of my practice sticks, and it really helped me to get in the habit of
keeping a good stance.
: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 0:08AM PST (-0700 GMT) Tripp: I only got to
see highlights of the NY/Boston game, but it did sound like Richter was
on. Interesting that NYR hasn't lost since Gretzky went down. Melrose's
take was that it's forced the rest of the team to step up offensively. The
Deuce has Leafs/Rangers Monday night. On the home front, won tonight 7-4.
Went down 3-0 in the first 10 minutes, then shut them down rest of the
way. Only other goal was scored by one of my D-men. He did look good
though skating in on me. picking up a rebound off the first shot and
burying it in the corner.
Scoop: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 2:12AM PST (-0700 GMT) Well fellow
goalies..... last weekends tourney didn't go too well... my team wound up
2-2... didn't advance to the championship rounds. We needed to win the 4th
game and instead took a 10-5 drumming. We only took 8 shots on goal...
mostly breakaway scores. On my end nothing went right. I'd make a really
good save only to give up a real weak goal moments later. Anyway, time for
me to backtrack and catch up on last weeks chat log
Papillon : . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 5:21AM PST (-0700 GMT) I have been
training for a couple of months now and I am about to play my first game
of the year, anyone got an tips for me?
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 5:54AM PST (-0700 GMT) ....a butterfly
lands on the Chat?...
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 5:55AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hi Papillon. First
game ever on ice? Hmmm, good luck, stay low, and follow teh puck with your
eyes 100% of the time. SOunds easy I know.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 5:59AM PST (-0700 GMT) Well despite C5's
forgiving words, I can't let Skudra off the hook for that one. It did look
like the off-speed fooled him, but you have to stop that shot, period. No
excuses. He lost the game. (Notice how the Fox announcer kept calling him
STraka? Gotta love'em.) Anyway I am wondering about Skudra now, he has had
a bundle of weak outings this year, compared to last year when he was very
hot. Talked to a pal I play with who refs for the Johnstown Chiefs and got
to watch Skudra a lot when he was in the minors. Said he was awful, goals
from mid-ice, couldn't stop a beach ball. With Hatcher out and Kaspar
maybe out, none of this makes me hopeful for the playoffs.
J.T.: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 6:07AM PST (-0700 GMT) ...and in good news
from this front, the tonsils stay in for now. Happy Monday, even if I
*did* run into Newt Gingrich at Starbucks this morning. ug.
: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 6:12AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hi smott, how are you?
Tripp, I like your center mark on the blade idea. I dont think I have a
problem with placement, but I think I'll try it anyway just to see.
Vile: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 6:14AM PST (-0700 GMT) As far as wearing
myself out... I wanted to impress my new team, so I got in net and tried
to stop everything. I'll never do that again. I'll start slow, pick my
battles a little more carefully. I plan on having a good talk with the
captain, to figure out what drills he wants to run etc. Still, a very good
learning game. I made one long range glove save I was pretty proud of, but
I wasn't sure how we were going to handle face offs, so I dropped the puck
at my feet. Of course I didn't pay attention to the guy waiting there to
pop it in. I probably won't do anything like that again soon. I really
followed the puck well, so that was good. I had so much fun :)
Goal35: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 6:30AM PST (-0700 GMT) whoa, been away
for awhile, had a lot of log catch-up... smott - sorry to hear of the
news... sending much healing energy and thoughts your way...
Goal35: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 6:35AM PST (-0700 GMT) on a hockey-note,
was a frustrating weekend, we had a A game, are fighting for a bye in the
first round of our B playoffs and only had one 5 guys show up... I played
well, we were up 4-2 at the end of 2, but the 3rd period was a shooting
gallery.. ended up losing 8-4, getting outshot 57-29, was alot of 3-1 and
tic-tac-tos passes inthe 3rd, our guys had nothing left and couldnt keep
up with the A guys..
Sieve: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 6:41AM PST (-0700 GMT) woops, that anon
was me... personal play notes: Mega-slump is dead, long live mega-slump.
3-0-1 in last four. My ex-basement dwellers knock off #1, 2, & 3 in a
row. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... feels good, like when the water finally
drains out of your ear after swimming.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 6:42AM PST (-0700 GMT) Ouch G35 I know
where that's at.....still sounds like you did great to keep it a game for
2+ periods....
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 6:42AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hey Sieve....cool
your slump is history!
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 6:43AM PST (-0700 GMT) I'm on the ice in
B tonight for a lovely 11 PM outing.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 6:44AM PST (-0700 GMT) Must-win game, we
have lost 3 of the last 4....ringers so unreliable. They show up when we
play the cellar-dwellars and get 9 goals, then we play the top dogs and
where are they? Meanwhile I get shelled.
Vile: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 6:48AM PST (-0700 GMT) I just read an
article about European expansion of the NHL... the NHL denies it, but can
you imagine the road trips? The huge travel costs?
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 6:55AM PST (-0700 GMT) Well seeing as how
the NHL and it's teams are just SWIMMING in excess revenue at the moment,
sounds like a great idea.
Beatts: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 7:13AM PST (-0700 GMT) We won our first
round of the play-offs last night...Took our best 2 out of 3 in 2
straight. 10-3 first game and 6-1 last night...Big Whoop....didn't see
many shot except for a nice break-away where old beatts stacked the
pads...sweeeet. Lost the goose-egg on a bad goal where I feel asleep....Oh
well, championship starts Sunday against the team we beat out last year,
very dirty team...
Beatts: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 7:15AM PST (-0700 GMT) I went up to
Ottawa this past Saturday to see my Leafs lose to the Sens....Despite what
all the papers are saying about it being a great game...IT WAS BORING.
With the exception of Tugger and Cujo making some great saves, the game
seemed to be played in the neutral zone......zzzzzzz
Papillon: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 7:21AM PST (-0700 GMT) Yep a butterfly
lands on the chat. Thanks for tips, I have had quite a strange year. I
started training last early last summer. Then one week into the start of
the season I had an accident and have been having treatment and rehab for
a couple of months, then I had to try to regain my conditioning. I have
been back on the ice since January and I finally get a start on Saturday.
I figure on sticking to the basics, trying to keep it as simple as
possible so that I don't have to think about too much. Have you guys got
an tips about handling the mental side of your first game, I am worried
about letting myself down.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 7:38AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hi again
Papillon...what's your background? Age and maybe a quick bio so we
Chatsters canget to know you?
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 7:39AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hmm as for
themental side...well you seem to be on to it, keep things simple, don't
try to do too much. Play within yourself and understand that you're just
coming back and can't expect too much. Try to make the saves that you
ought to make, and let the rest come as it may. Hardest part will probably
be just concentrating well for an extended period.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 7:51AM PST (-0700 GMT) Heh heh yes
Beatts, remember that ANY game with Ottawa tends to be boring. Pens have
had some excrutiatingly dull contests with the Sens, including I believe a
0-0 tie last year. Or maybe it was 1-1. Don't know, I fell asleep....:-D
papillon: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 7:58AM PST (-0700 GMT) ok here is my
bio...I live in the UK, I am male, 26 years old, 6' 1.5" tall and a
shade over 200lbs, I started playing last year as I said. Prior to that I
have played field hockey and rubgy (both at varisty level) and Olympic
style weightlifting, as well as lots of other sports that were just for
fun. I have watched hockey for a few years both on tv
(NHL/Worlds/Olympics) and live, although the english pro leagues are of a
pretty poor standard (equivalent to ECHL). I train with two teams, one is
a novice adult team where we work on the basics and the other is with a
team of (30+ year old) ex-pros (they needed a goalie for training, so I
get exposed to a higher level of play, its very hard work but fun), I also
take a power skating class once a week, its about 25% regular skating and
75% goalie skating.

smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 8:11AM PST (-0700 GMT) whoops your first
encounter with the double-post beast!
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 8:14AM PST (-0700 GMT) Sounds to me like
you have a good exposure to decent level if you're practicing with
ex-pros. What is the league you'll be playing in? Good luck in your first
game! With a year or so experience under your belt just concentrate on the
basics and emphasize skating and positioning. Skating is so underestimated
often when it comes to goaltending...goalies should be amongst the best
skaters on the team, with teh best overall balance. Too often coaches
overlook this. Anyway, have fun!
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 8:14AM PST (-0700 GMT) BTW I am English
myself. Born in Sussex.
Vile: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 8:28AM PST (-0700 GMT) If you take a power
skating class, (presumably geared towards skaters rather than goalies) do
you wear your goal skates or a pair of player skates? I am trying to get a
feel for the difference between the performances of the two.
papillon: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 8:34AM PST (-0700 GMT) when I started
the power skating, it was 100% geared toward skaters, then after two
months they switched it to 15 mins regular skating and 45 mins goaling
skating. I wear full goalie kit and carry a stick throughout the lesson,
that includes goalie skates, the main thing that I found crossovers more
difficult as I didn't have such a deep hollow, I do go fairly deep
(1/2") and I had to deal with the pads.
papillon: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 8:47AM PST (-0700 GMT) yeah the ex-pro
guys are all old-ish and a little out of shape (too much post game beer
and pizza) but they still skate rings around me and during an hour
practice score too many goals to mention, but they point out my mistakes
to me in a nice way and they explain the tactical side of things which is
something not covered so much in the adult novice team. We also get a few
referees and linesmen along that like to be on the playing side of things
aswell as officiating. When they have games they get a junior player to go
in goal as I am not strong enough yet, but I just enjoy the practice, and
their play brings mine up a level which helps when I train with my own
team. In the UK there is only one rec league, which contains teams that
range from complete novices upto ex-pros that like to play for fun, so
things can get a little one sided. Sometimes the games are full contact
and sometimes they are played with old timers (non/light contact) rules.
But all that said its fun and usually competitive. Luckily my first game
is against a team of a similar level to my own.
GoalieHawk: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 8:50AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hey
goalies..... I had a playoff game last night. For some odd reason I went
out on the ice without tucking in the laces in my pads, and I left my
suspenders flapping out. So I had to take em off and tuck in the laces.
Kinda funny though. With out the suspenders my chest pad kept cruching up
and moving a bit. Not a big deal. We won the game 5-1, and Paul Bastian
ruined my shut out in a goal mouth scramble. I dove and got a piece of it,
but not enough. Oh well..... I got in the play with two break-out passes
in which one resulted in a goal. No assist though since I was the 3rd
person in the play. Still, I made the play happen..... Talk to yah
later.
Vile: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 8:58AM PST (-0700 GMT) wow, I always
assumed (major problem I know) crossovers were right out while in goal
pads.
Papillon: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 9:09AM PST (-0700 GMT) I find
crossovers tricky, but I always take part in all the skating drills we do
in practice. A usually come last when training with the better team, but
when training with the other team I usually beat the other goalie and two
or three other guys. I find stuff like crossovers and hockey stops etc.
just help confidence in my skating.
Papillon: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 9:11AM PST (-0700 GMT) hey smot, what
is it with sussex born goalies, I remember reading that Byron Dafoe was
born in Sussex. Did any of you read the goalies world style analysis of
him, "gutsy warrior" was the label they gave him.
Vile: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 9:32AM PST (-0700 GMT) sorry 4qts, didn't
mean to jinx Adams...
Tripp: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 9:59AM PST (-0700 GMT) Man... I've got to
get this off my chest. The Islanders are the biggest bunch of pansies in
the NHL. There, I said it. During their game with the Devils yesterday,
they let Scott Stevens get in right in Salo's face and challenge him to
fight. They were jawing for a good minute-and-a-half, and no one even came
over to stick up for Tommy. Now I dunno if it's the fact that I sorta look
like Salo now with my pretty blonde hair, or just that I hate seeing
goalies not get backed up, or what... but I was really ticked off by that.
Sure, I wouldn't want to tangle with Stevens, but jeez. No need to wonder
why they're perennial pushovers.
Beatts: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 10:07AM PST (-0700 GMT) Tripp, with Gino
Odjick hurt, Ken Belanger traded and Rich Pilon getting the piss pounded
out of him last week against the leafs, there is not much there for tough
guys...no excuse though, Stevens should have been sitting on his ass.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 10:08AM PST (-0700 GMT) Heh heh
"gutsy warrior" eh? Something special about Byron?
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 10:22AM PST (-0700 GMT) Yah Tripp, the
Isles have sure been wusses huh? Whatever happened to team toughness?
Personally I don't mind occasionally getting run over as long as I sit up
and see the guy that did it getting turned into mashed potatoes... :-D
Tripp: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 10:32AM PST (-0700 GMT) The Isles didn't
do anything when Fedorov smashed Chara in the face with his stick either.
I mean Fedorov? Anna Kournikova probably kicks his ass at home, for cryin'
out loud! Well at least they called up Eric Cairns. He's about six foot
thirteen, so maybe he'll actually show some toughness. Thank God I'm not
an Isles fan.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 10:56AM PST (-0700 GMT) Yah thank
goodness!
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 10:58AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hmmm I think
Detroit is coming on too....between them and the Avs it could get
interesting out West. Lots of pressure on Dallas.
Vile: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 11:10AM PST (-0700 GMT) My wife just sent
me this URL button
for a cool article on Ed Belfour.
Vile: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 11:11AM PST (-0700 GMT) Worth reading,
even if you are not an Eddie fan.
Vile: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 11:21AM PST (-0700 GMT) He also has a nice
"Technically Speaking" Section, I have just read some of. Good
for the new goalies (like myself) that are looking for tips. Pretty
interesting, since the last time I looked at his site, www.belfour.com, he
was just selling his old equipment and other merchandize.
Gardienne: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 11:54AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hey Vile,
yeah.. Ed's actually had the Tech speaking for a while... it doesn't get
updated quite as often because of time trying to get him to sit still long
enough to help them write one out but they try to keep one going often
enough. His "game day" info was pretty interesting I thought. I
wish they would update the Tech section a little more often but I
definitely understand. There's also an "Ask Eddie" section that
I've wanted more goalies to write in on but since they're only posted once
a week and so many people ask questions to be answered, it'll take a
little while before you see them come up unfortunately. Glad to see ya
wandered across Ed's site.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 11:59AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hi
Gardienne...
Gardienne: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 12:00AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hiya smott,
how you doing today?
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 12:20AM PST (-0700 GMT) OK thanks.
Checked outt he Eddie site and actually I have seen it before. He's a very
very intense guy, easy to see how he earned his psycho rep.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 12:24AM PST (-0700 GMT) Unfortunately I
think that level of intensity has spilled over at critical times and not
served him well in the playoffs.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 12:25AM PST (-0700 GMT) ....of course,
checking out his pre-game plan....I'd be in a bad mood too if I ate a
12-oz steak, took a nap then tried to play!
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 12:26AM PST (-0700 GMT) Trivia Note - NHL
Scouting report puts Belfour together with Hasek as "best goalie with
worst style". Of course, who do all the kids try to emulate?....
Tripp: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 12:32AM PST (-0700 GMT) I must admit that
unlike most of the people here, I kinda like Eddie. He's one of my top 5
favorite goalies. I could never be that intense and be successful. I
prefer to stay more relaxed and laid back... but everyone has to prepare
in his/her own way. But intense or not, what he did to Jeff Hackett was
wrong. Hack's a pretty good goalie in his own right, and you never tell
the other goalie to keep his mouth shut because he's "only a
backup". You need to show respect for your team and root for the
other goalie when he's in there. If you're really a # 1 goalie, you can't
be so insecure. Besides being a playoff grenade, that's my only knock on
Eddie. **stepping down from the soapbox**
Tripp: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 12:35AM PST (-0700 GMT) If I count as a
kid, I try to emulate Byron Dafoe. Of all the NHL'ers, his style is the
most similar to mine, so I try to watch him very closely for pointers. Of
course, sometimes when the puck is around the net, I look more like CuJo.
A sprawling mess. Patience has never been one of my strong suits when
there's a scramble.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 12:58AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hmmm Trippster
those are some strong words for one of your faves! I thought Belfour
behaved like a jerk.
Gardienne: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 1:04PM PST (-0700 GMT) I dunno..
since I wasn't there I didn't hear what happened exactly but Hackett and
other hawks said things were blown outta proportion by the media.. but I'm
a little biased because I consider Ed a friend... I have been keeping my
art job quiet until I get the film back on stuff and announcing it on my
page... but Ed's been very kind to me.. and the art job is involved w/
him. Anyway.. sorry.. I understand why some ppl don't like him but as I
said.. I'm biased :)
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 1:07PM PST (-0700 GMT) Ah never said he
wasn't a decent guy off the ice. On the ice and as a goaltender I have my
doubts is all.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 1:09PM PST (-0700 GMT) Different example
is Barrasso. Total jerk off the ice apparently. But I still like to watch
him a lot. Technically superior, really good example for kiddies. Again,
on the ice only.
Gardienne: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 1:15PM PST (-0700 GMT) I don't think
Ed has the same temper that he had when he was younger... he lately lashes
out only occasionally but I see other goalies lose their temper as well.
Dallas struggled all around last season's playoffs.. I hope they can keep
things going through this season's.. Anyway.. Smott.. how's that new mask
holding up? Get any good hits to the head or is it still untested? How
long've you had this one? (didn't it have a leak in the airbladder?)
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 1:18PM PST (-0700 GMT) Gardienne don't I
recall last year you were planning to get on the ice soon? What's the
holdup?
Gardienne: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 1:20PM PST (-0700 GMT) I spent a lot
more $ on the mask than I'd intended and the art gig with Belfour is
taking up the funds now (I posted a little while back a few days ago)..
been keeping in shape by riding trails several miles a day.. hoping once
things get back on track (the art gig took me by surprise) I can get
moving again w/ the ice stuff.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 1:22PM PST (-0700 GMT) Yep had an air
leak, got that replaced for free. Matt is very nice. The mask has
takenmultiple rockets and is holding up fine except for a couple of scuff
marks here or there. Very pleased with it. Would recommend Pro-Masque to
anybody.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 1:23PM PST (-0700 GMT) ...what's
"the art gig"?
Gardienne: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 1:26PM PST (-0700 GMT) Did you end up
getting it painted? I think it was you that I chatted with about getting..
cats, was it? painted on.... The art gig is that Ed has seen some of my
art I've done (I do cartoons of him and an eagle named Talon) and I
approached him about making prints etc of the art.. we worked out a
licensing agreement so I show them stuff and they ok it for me to sell.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 1:29PM PST (-0700 GMT) Sounds cool. But
right now it's costing you more than it's bringing in? Haven't yet painted
my mask....
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 1:30PM PST (-0700 GMT) ...maybe you could
send a couple samples to CatsFive and he could post them...? Might be fun
for us to see your work.
Gardienne: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 1:31PM PST (-0700 GMT) Just have to
get the film/proofs then go to print.. I'm taking it slowly to make sure
everything goes right.. it also took a little while to get the agreement
worked out. We also spent some $ on the mountainbikes we ride now that
could have gone into hockey gear and the mask also took a little more $
and time than we'd planned.. but then.. what ever goes as planned eh?
heheheheh
Gardienne: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 1:33PM PST (-0700 GMT) I have a
webpage.. I'm not sure I still remember how to post a url here (I recall
posting a url to an image put the image here).. I'll definitely let you
all know how it's going.. I'm hoping to be able to get out this week to
get the film made on the first piece.
Gardienne: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 1:34PM PST (-0700 GMT) the url is button
(Hope that worked) and the page is still in the "old form", the
new look and the actual announcement will go up once I get my film back..
hopefully in a week or so...
C5: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 3:18PM PST (-0700 GMT) Eddie is obviously an
NHL #1 goalie, but his ego has a bad reputation with me. I know there are
a lot of fans out there who don't know squat who want to tell guys like
Eddie this or that, so I'm sure that there are nights when he just stands
there in his crease and thinks, "I'm here, I'm in the NHL, and I
don't care what they think." Personally, I like watching him.
Sometimes, however, it seems like he's dying to be treated on the same
level as Roy, that his numbers and past performance give him the right to
be considered one of the "elite" goalies. Like in that link,
which mentions his numbers, and carefully mentions that they're better
than Hasek's. Apples and oranges, if you ask me. His GAA last year shows
NOTHING about Belfour. Personally, until Belfour has stepped it up in the
playoffs and been the main man all the way to the cup, he's just another
starting goalie to me. Give me Roy, Vernon, Richter, Fuhr, goalies who
have PROVEN playoff performance ability any day.
gbfreeman: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 5:22PM PST (-0700 GMT) Gardienne,
wierd finding you here. I run a site called "The Weasel's Den"
and your site was the first I gave the "Wild Weasel Award" to.
If you are interested, I am at the top of the page of pics of chat
regulars linked on the bottom of this page.
gbfreeman: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 5:26PM PST (-0700 GMT) Now for my two
cents on Belfour, I totally idolized the guy at one time. Had the Belfour
jersey and helmet. Loved watching him play. Then the whole Jeff Hackett
"I'm the number one goalie" thing. Didn't show much class. And
then (supposedly) San Jose was willing to mortgage the farm to keep him,
and he couldn't get out fast enough. He needs to reign in the "I'm
the one and only" attitude a little. His tantrum in the Wings series
was just the tonic the Red Wings needed.
gbfreeman: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 5:26PM PST (-0700 GMT) The banners on
top of this page keep getting better and better. Really liked the side
view of Brathwaite.
Gardienne: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 6:09PM PST (-0700 GMT) hi gbfreeman,
yeah.. I haven't been around for a while.. honestly can't even remember
how long ago was the first time I ever chatted on here... I've been on the
netminders mailing list for the past... 5 yrs I think now.. and wandered
on here again recently because the list has been quiet. I didn't intend
for a Belfour chat to start up, mainly was wanting to see how everyone was
doing that I'd chatted with several months ago and listen to everyone's
goalie chat and gear talk etc. I'm probably going to lurk a little more
again, but thanks again for your award you gave my site a while back! Take
care... looking forward to hearing how things go for everyone, keep us
informed on how you're doing too, Vile!
deke: . . . . Mon, Mar 8, 8:19PM PST (-0700 GMT) Ranger watch
update: NYRs tie the Leafs in the third, off Nedved's rear end, then take
the two points with 13.5 seconds left in overtime. Have now tied the B's
for final playoff spot. Both Richter and Healy played well, but Blueshirts
making a mighty impressive stretch run (so far) Plenty of regular season
left, however.
zen: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 1:04AM PST (-0700 GMT) Did anyone happen to
notice the University of New Hampshire mens' hockey team clinched the Big
East season title over the weekend?
Papillon: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 1:32AM PST (-0700 GMT) I got a real
surprise last night....I got a phone call from a guy I knew, asking me to
play last night as their usual goalie was sick, so I jumped at the
chance...we won 9-3...I think I played ok for the first 40 mins, then I
had two real soft goals in 90 seconds, one I went to freeze the puck and
it slipped under my catcher and over the line and the second was a
slapshot from the blue line, which I did not see until it was too late
(lack of concentration) and the last goal was a breakaway, and the guy
deked me real good, then backhanded it into the top corner blocker
side...overall for my first game I was quite happy (apart from the two
stupid goals), I think I just need to work on my concentration
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 5:51AM PST (-0700 GMT) CONGRATS on your
first win Papillon! Don't worry about the deke/top shelf that sounds like
a good goal. And yes concentration may wander at the end of a one-sided
game....
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 5:52AM PST (-0700 GMT) Yep C5 agree with
your Eddie overview....basically the guy has spent most of his career
behind superior teams, and has gotten past the 2nd round what, once?...
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 5:53AM PST (-0700 GMT) ...and if he got
shelled nightly like Hasek instead of seeing 12 outside shots, I doubt his
numbers would compare.
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 5:54AM PST (-0700 GMT) Meanwhile OUCH
Kasparitus may be done for the season...MRI shows further ACL damage.
Still talking about a week's rehab then a trial, but....further injury
could put him out 'til next January. I say get the surgery now, and the
Pens should trade for a tougher D. I'd love to have Ulfie back.
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 5:58AM PST (-0700 GMT) From the smott
files....odd game last night. We get dominated for 2+ periods, I more or
less got in the way and kept it to 2-1 until the 3rd. We could not buy a
goal. Then we tied it, then our C who had been AWOL the whole game
suddenly went crazy and scored 4 straight! Go figure. We win going away
7-2, so I had heartburn for nothing. But I'll take the W....
Vile: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 7:49AM PST (-0700 GMT) The button I posted
earlier with a Belfour article had some interesting insights. He didn't
make it on his high school team until his senior year, he wasn't
drafted... I think he probably developed a complex. It has probably
mellowed since Chicago, as he has matured (a little). But it is nice to
have some more Eddie support, and a fellow Dallas fan on Gardienne :)
Vile: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 7:50AM PST (-0700 GMT) I tried to sign
into the goalie mailing list, and I got a confirmation, then a removal
notice. So in a week, I haven't gotten anything. But I like this chat
anyway.
C5: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 8:12AM PST (-0700 GMT) Guardienne, we don't
mind you bringing up anything. It's good to chat about these things. More
thoughts on Belfour, I think he views other teams as being second rate.
"If I was to be traded to that team, I'd be the instant #1
goalie," I'm sure he thinks. If he was in Montreal, he'd be #1?
Personally, if Eddie came up for grabs, and I had Hackett, I wouldn't
consider myself in the goalie market. This business of getting a goalie
that's .01 GAA better than another, like in Philly, is just plain
nonsense. It's like a car. What you pay for those last 25 horses you could
go out and get a SUPER stereo or something. With a team, what you pay for
that extra edge, having a Hasek versus having a Shields, you could go out
and get a Leetch or a Mellanby or a Barnaby, a real spark plug who'll
bring experience and get your team going. Hockey is more than numbers. And
Eddie hasn't grasped that. And probably won't.
C5: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 8:14AM PST (-0700 GMT) Now, if Eddy came up
for grabs, and I had Thibault, I'd think twice. Especially if solid
goaltending was the "last piece" of the puzzle to make a serious
run in the playoffs. But for teams which are building for a run for the
cup in a few years, like Florida, Sabres, Mighty Ducks, my current
goaltending is perfect. Eddie's solid. But he has never carried it when it
counts.
C5: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 8:15AM PST (-0700 GMT) GB, cool! Glad you
liked that banner. That Brathwaite one and the Roy one are my favorites.
I'm going to be replacing a few of the other banners as I create more
quality ones.
Sieve: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 8:54AM PST (-0700 GMT) C5, excellent
close up pic of Tugger on the Sullivan penalty shot. Why didnt he roof it?
I thought Sullivan had him. Most exciting 5 sec. of sports...
Vile: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 9:22AM PST (-0700 GMT) I tried scrolling
through the chat buffer, because I know we've discussed this recently, but
I forgot what everyone said...
Vile: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 9:23AM PST (-0700 GMT) I am looking at
neck/clavicle protectors.
Vile: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 9:28AM PST (-0700 GMT) SFSL has a Kim
Crouch goal combo, and an Itech N17. Otherwise I don't know anything about
them. Sports Exchange has a Bauer and a Vaughn. The Vaughn they mention is
great for rec goalies, which even tho I am a rec goalie, it sets off
warnings of cheapness.
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 9:34AM PST (-0700 GMT) Vile I had good
luck with my Itech collar. however it didn't fit nicely with my new
Pro-Masque, so I ditched it and gt a slightly lower collar. Can't remember
the brand name it was odd, I'll get it for you.
z-man: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 9:41AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hello! I have a
new device I use that some of you might like. I bought a boot dryer from
Cabela's, an outdoors company like LL Bean, that I use to dry my gloves.
it plugs in and works great! Another thing I wanted to ask about:
Yesterday in my game, a player scored from the blue line right through the
five hole. The puck wasn't going that fast, but for some reason, I went
into butterfly instead of using my stick. Purely reflex, but does this
happen to anyone else? I saw Khabibulin do it against Pittsburgh last
week. Other than that, I played pretty well despite my defense. We lost
3-5 and all the goals but the five hole were scored off of rebounds since
I had no defense! I took 35 shots and the other goalie took 17!
Surprisingly I fell right to sleep last night though :-)
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 9:52AM PST (-0700 GMT) Yikes z-man the
dreaded long-distance 5-hole! Where was you stick?...
Tripp: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 9:58AM PST (-0700 GMT) Ahhhhhh don't
sweat it z-man. Every goalie in history has been beaten by a shot like
that more times than they care to remember. My old coach used to tell me
to get my glove on those, if at all possible, because it's a clean save
that leaves no weird rebound. Plus the puck doesn't get lost in your
equipment or skitter through ya. Also, I constantly remind myself to put a
little bit of pressure on my stick. That way when I go into the butterfly,
the blade covers the space between my knees and doesn't accidentally leave
the ice. Sometimes those shots were the toughest for me. I had so much
time to think about em that they'd handcuff me. I guess it's just a matter
of concentration.
Tripp: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 10:03AM PST (-0700 GMT) As far as
collars... I have one of those Heaton klava collars. It seems to work
pretty well. I'm not as worried about a puck in the throat as I am a
skate. One of my first goalie memories was Clint Malarchuk bleeding on the
ice after taking a skate. That collar is a bit warm, but I also wear my
lucky white turtleneck underneath it... so it probably wouldn't be so
tropical if I wasn't so superstitious. I think it ran me $40 or so.
Vile: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 10:51AM PST (-0700 GMT) That was actually
my concern, not so much a slap shot to the neck, but rather a stick or
skate while I am covering up.
Sieve: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 11:43AM PST (-0700 GMT) vile, I use an
ancient Brians neck protector that is sewn all the way up the front from
where it stopped a blade. scary...
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 12:53AM PST (-0700 GMT) ...another big
game for my Birds tonight, playing NJ. Geez they've been up against 1st
place clubs forever it seems, Dallas and Colorado last week NJ and well
teh Canes this week. Really need a W, let's hope Skudra doesn't fan on
another floater...
Vile: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 1:03PM PST (-0700 GMT) Man, the goal skate
transition is kicking my butt right now. They really handle like roller
blades. Of course it doesn't help that I am also trying to break this
suckers in. Luckily, in a game, I am so pumped, I don't really feel my
feet :)
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 1:15PM PST (-0700 GMT) Lucky you. My
Bauers pinched my heels something fierce when they were new, had to get
them stretched....
z-man: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 2:14PM PST (-0700 GMT) Tripp, I think
that that is it. I concentrated so much on how to stop that simple little
shot it actually confused me! It was going so slow I got distracted by the
turtle running past it! I play better when the shots are so fast I can't
think but only react, I don't trust myself when I think too much. :-
fourqts: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 3:00PM PST (-0700 GMT) Vile--- no
worries on hexing Adams... In his first game back he scores a goal and the
first line accounts fro a total of nine points..... Maybe just maybe they
made the turn here..... But Boolin is playing with a strained groin and
Waite just got sent down to Springfeild again.... Esche to be Boolins
backup for a while.... I guess Jimmy's dream of being selected in the
expansion draft this year and moving on to be a number one in atlanta or
columbus is pretty much gone... As for watching pro tenders... I learn the
most from the beezer... Small tender like myself, but when he is on it
appears as if he doesn't have to move to make the save... His technique is
outstanding. When you want to see just great reflexes I don't htink you
can beat boolin, brodur (sp), and Hasek.... But to learn the angles and
positioning, my voite goes to studying the beez
deke: . . . . Tue, Mar 9, 7:13PM PST (-0700 GMT) Vile: Like Sieve, I
have an old Brians collar which has worked well, but I started using a
John Brown collar this season, and really like it. It is not too tall so
it doesn't interfere with the mask, is open at the rear and has excellent
clavicle protection. A little pricey though. Around $50.00
papillon: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 1:20AM PST (-0700 GMT) on throat
protection....I use a koho throat/clavicle collar which is very
comfortable, I got a stick blade in the throat during practice a couple of
weeks ago and it stood up to the task...its not too high, I do not notice
it interfering with my mask....I also use a clear lexan throat guard that
hangs from my mask.
C5: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 7:27AM PST (-0700 GMT) Tripp, I use the
same clavicle protector. During warmups a few games ago I took one high in
the throat. Thought I was getting away from it but the puck was a
curveball to boot. Hit the top edge of the kevlar, and although I felt it
for a few minutes afterward, there were no ill effects. Since then, the
extra few degrees haven't bothered me, and I wear a turtleneck underneath
it.
C5: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 7:36AM PST (-0700 GMT) Seive, most exciting
5 seconds? Wait. That kinda reminds me of... ooh, hang on, this is a
family-friendly chat, right? But wait, isn't that where families come
from??
C5: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 7:37AM PST (-0700 GMT) I got tagged without
that clavicle protector once and felt a dull, bone-bruise pain breathing
for a week afterwards. I felt that on top of the protection, it'll also
boost my confidence, as a goalie is only as good as long as he feels safe
in the crease.
smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 7:46AM PST (-0700 GMT) 5 seconds? Sounds
like my ex-boyfriend....
smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 9:23AM PST (-0700 GMT) Meanwhile GEEZOID
my Birds are sliding. Give up 3 in 3 mins to NJ, go down 3-2. Now winless
in like 8....who do they think they are, Philly?
smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 9:26AM PST (-0700 GMT) As for moi, took
my Weekly SHellacking....kept it close (again) for 2+ periods, 4-3 down in
the 3rd, finally gave up 3 more late. We only had 6 skaters, most of us
including me standing around wheezing by the end....
z-man: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 9:54AM PST (-0700 GMT) Last night I got
the inevitable groin pull. How long does this usually last? I don't want
to miss my game Sunday night. Also, is there any cautions regarding this I
should know about?
smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 10:09AM PST (-0700 GMT) z-man, ouch
sorry to hear about your pull. Groin injuries are nasty - they can last
for days, weeks, or months, or just become chronic due to other factors. I
am chronic due to slight spinal curvature, right hip a little back of the
letf, always have a sore groin/hip flexor tehre if I don't stretch like
crazy.
smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 10:12AM PST (-0700 GMT) Precautions
might be an ace wrap - talk to a trainer if you can because the groin-wrap
is a little wierd and complicated, up over the hip, between the legs etc.
Sometimes a plain old neo-prene sheath for upper thigh helps too, just to
keep the area warm. Pullit as high as you can. Take ibuprofin to keep
inflammation down.
smott: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 10:15AM PST (-0700 GMT) Last but not
least - PT. I am able to keep my aches under control primarily through teh
use of Nautilus exercise equipment, one machine in particular. It's called
the Hip Abducter/Adducter and if you're not familiar with it, you ought to
be, it will really strengthen and improve range of motion in hip/groin
area. Though it does look a bit like something out of the Spanish
Inquisition! Pries your legs apart etc heh heh heh.....Good luck!
Tripp: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 11:53AM PST (-0700 GMT) hmm... I got the
Olaf banner today. Looks like he's taking a nap... as I plan on doing
tonight. Last time we played this team, we won 20-2 and outshot em 44-11.
They're horrible and their goalie is afraid of the puck, despite having
top of the line Koho gear. As much as I'd like to say something nice about
them, there just isn't anything really complimentary to say. Maybe I'll
take a lawn chair or some cards with me.
Vile: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 12:18AM PST (-0700 GMT) Woo, back from
pick up at lunch. I am feeling a lot better on my skates. I wore them
around the house while watching TV last night, and they felt pretty good
today. I got a nice bruise for my elbow in the pick up game.
Vile: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 12:20AM PST (-0700 GMT) What is the
prefered procedure for stopping a high stick side shot? I tried to get my
blocker up, but I ended up taking 3 off the elbow today.
Sieve: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 12:21AM PST (-0700 GMT) maaaaaaaaan,
20-2... smott, you're lucky that guy isnt on our chat, he'd run away with
your Shellack o' the week award for sure.
Vile: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 12:53AM PST (-0700 GMT) Bone-head play of
the week submission. Missed a high slap shot with my glove... it hit the
cross bar, and smacked me in the back of the head. I don't think anyone
paid much attention to it, but I thought it was pretty funny.
Vile: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 1:45PM PST (-0700 GMT) Here's yet another
question... does a poke check count as a save? I have noticed a lot of
guys (at my level) are paying more attention to the puck than me... so I
am poking them to the corners. Just wondering...
Carpe de Puck: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 2:24PM PST (-0700 GMT) I tried
wearing a throat/neck protector but the heat build up and the fact that my
Pro-Masque actually gives me very good protection(Smott feel free to chime
in) in that area plus the thing kind of caught up on my mask made me ditch
it after a few times. As of late I have been looking at Brown and Vaughn
throat pro. A neat trick I learned from another goalie while in training
camp for those that do use throat pro. My friend had sewn his Vaughn
throat pro into his Brown C/A unit so that all he had to do was attach the
velcro in back around his neck. Nothing fancy, just a few whip stiches
here and there to keep it in place. I talked to Matt Garland at Pro-Masque
yesterday, my new paint job should (knock on wood) be here fri or sat.
From his description of it, it is a sight to see. I'll send C5 a pic of it
to post as soon as it arrives as well as a pic of the loaner mask Matt
gave me while I was waiting to get mine back. You have got to see this
mask to believe it, it is out there.
gbfreeman: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 4:32PM PST (-0700 GMT) Terrible warm
up last night. Couldn't stop a thing. Slap shots, dribblers, wrist shots,
basketballs, watermelons, VWs. I needed a bigger net to hold all the
pucks. Got hit on the cup twice! Second actually cracked it but I didn't
find out until after. So what happens in the game. We go out and beat a
team that we haven't beat in 6 tries. The last time we played them we
ended in a mini brawl resulting in 3 suspensions. Got the shutout. D was
playing great. We celebrated at the end like we won the Stanley Cup. It
was really great. There is so much bad blood between these two teams that
they pulled there goalie down 4-0 and went with the extra skater just to
try to deny me the shutout. Should be interesting when we see them in the
playoffs. They are in first at 5-1-1 and we are 5-2.
gbfreeman: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 4:37PM PST (-0700 GMT) Went a little
nuts last night and bought some new equipment. Spent nearly $400. Bought
the Brown JB56 Elite blocker to match my glove. Weird shape. Kind of like
a chevron < . No curve at all at the base like my previous blocker
(Franklin roller hockey pro). Took a little getting used to. Also bought a
pair of CCM MHP 520 pants. Feel like the Michelin man out there.
gbfreeman: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 5:14PM PST (-0700 GMT) smott, Sammi
Kapinan just scored on a shot that went THROUGH Skudra's glove.
Carpe de Puck: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 8:15PM PST (-0700 GMT) GB, glad
to hear someone had a good night. Our 4 game winning streak ended tonight
abruptly. My guys played like jerry's kid's on crack. The play was so
disorganized that I found myself trying to comp for it and was actually
putting myself in bad position. Meanwhile, at the other end the goalie
basically stands there and my guys drill him in the chest . My guys made
the other goalie look great tonight while I got a royal shellacking. I had
a total of 65 shots at the end of the second and they stopped counting
once the third started. Of the two goals we did manage to score I got the
assist on one. Since my guy's couldn't break it out of the zone I had to.
So I'm not sure if I should be happy tonight or really pissed. Some times
I think players are some of the dumbest people on the face of the earth
and tonight is one of those nights. Every goalies nightmare....I follow
the puck down the right wing and the guy goes behind the net, uncontested,
so I'm moving with the play. He passes the puck out to the left face off
circle to his guy who then passes it to the guy in the slot at the top of
my crease. So I'm bouncing like a pinball from post to post then out to
the top of the crease. Lucky for me the guy didn't get good wood on it and
it went wide. I had a total of 4 guys from the other team around my net
and not 1 of mine in sight . It was a BAD night gang. Yours truely is
frustrated BIG time right now, what really frosts my balls is that they
gave up and started gliding through the rest of the game while I'm picking
up their slack and giving it 110% and still getting smoked. I came this
close to leaving the ice at the end of the second period and calling it a
night, but I've never quit anything in my life so I wasn't about to start
tonight. Man, venting feels pretty good :-)
Carpe de Puck: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 8:16PM PST (-0700 GMT) So what
happened to Skudra's glove tonight? Webbing blow out or was that statement
a figure of speech?
gbfreeman: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 8:20PM PST (-0700 GMT) Webbing blew
out!
Tripp: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 8:48PM PST (-0700 GMT) Okay... Let me
first say that it's almost midnight, I'm mega-dehydrated from my game, and
I feel like death warmed over. But did the Flyers get Recchi, or was I
hearing things? That REALLY REALLY sucks. What a Legion of Doom line they
have now!!! Cripes, even if they stick him with Brind'Amour they're
looking good, Un -dirty word - believable.
Tripp: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 8:52PM PST (-0700 GMT) Oh yeah... and we
won our game 11-0. My 5th shutout of the year. Not too shabby, considering
my shoulder is being held together with one tendon and almost no
cartilege. I also got 4 minutes in unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. I
didn't like their guys hacking at my glove, so I came up with the stick
and got the guy right in the junk... twice. Anyhoo, playoffs start next
Wednesday. I can't wait
: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 10:02PM PST (-0700 GMT)
: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 10:02PM PST (-0700 GMT)
wolfman: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 10:05PM PST (-0700 GMT) smott Sorry to
hear but I'm sure everything will be all right. All good thougts to you.
wolfman: . . . . Wed, Mar 10, 10:05PM PST (-0700 GMT) smott Sorry to
hear but I'm sure everything will be all right. All good thougts to you.
Papillon: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 1:36AM PST (-0700 GMT) NHL Goalie
rules???...last night (in the UK) we had the Pittsburgh @ Carolina
game...later in the game after the webbing blew out of Skudras glove, he
came out, and covered the puck way out near the blue line...under IIHF
rules (which we play under in the UK) the goalie mustn't cover the puck
further out than the hash marks - or behind the goal line, and if they do
the goalie gets a delay of game minor...the commentators made no comment,
I assume this rule isn't the same in the NHL?
gbfreeman: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 3:12AM PST (-0700 GMT) Papillon, I
know how it is in my roller league. The goalie can freeze the puck within
12 feet of the net. He can freeze the puck behind the goal line as long as
his entire body is not behind the goal line.
gbfreeman: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 3:13AM PST (-0700 GMT) fourqts, the
Coyotes waived Jimmy Waite today when he refused to return to the minors
on the advice of his agent.
gbfreeman: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 3:18AM PST (-0700 GMT) CDP, I know
how it is with the attitudes of some of the players. They can have a bad
game and give you crap if you say something about it. I left one of my
teams after we got beat 13-1 and the team was tanking it. The captain of
the team responded to my criticism with the remark "It's just a game
we aren't getting paid!" Well, he didn't seem to have the same
attitude when I skated off the surface after getting run over with about 2
minutes left. I told him I wasn't going to get hurt because they weren't
going to give it their all protecting me. Begining of the end with that
team. Some times you have to make a stand and not look at it as quitting,
but giving the team a wake up call.
gbfreeman: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 3:21AM PST (-0700 GMT) On a happier
note, we won 4-3 tonight to move back into the playoff hunt with three
games left. Currently in sixth place after spending the first 5 weeks in
9th or 10th place. Top 6 make playoffs, top two get bye for the first
week. This is the same team that won the championship last season. Post
cup blues I guess. Game tonight would have been 4-1, but my D put TWO past
me! Hey, a win is a win.
Papillon: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 3:35AM PST (-0700 GMT) teammates
living up to your expectations of them....if I explain to my teammates how
I need their help...like clearing bodies away from around the crease area,
dealing with the players that like to dig at my glove when I freeze the
puck etc...then what do you do if they don't do those things...basically
letting the opposition push me around...my gut reaction is to stand up for
myself, and if necessary draw a penalty...to let them know the score...
Papillon: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 3:39AM PST (-0700
GMT) anyway...during my first game (monday) one of the opposition kept
hooking my glove arm when a shoot was taken from the point, my teammates
didn't do anything, so third time I catch the puck, whistle blew, then I
give the guy a real hard slash, he balistic, so we start roughing...finaly
my teammates get the message
C5: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 6:33AM PST (-0700 GMT) I have noticed that
Hackett doesn't seem to wear any throat protection at all. In fact, he's
got so much equipment missing high that it looks like he's had the collar
from his CA removed.
smott: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 6:34AM PST (-0700 GMT) Wow lots of chat!
Papillon, that should be an interference penalty I think if the guy is
deliberately hooking your glove.
Sieve: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 6:36AM PST (-0700 GMT) Papillon, seems
like a reasonable response to me. If there is one problem guy in
particular that doesnt take the more subtle hints, I've been known to
introduce his junk (good one Tripp) to Mr. Hespeler. But, if you do resort
to that, better be ready to drop the mitts...
smott: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 6:36AM PST (-0700 GMT) CdP vent away I
know where that's at my friend! Wow you got shellacked! As far as AWOL D,
yep that really frosts my...ah hmmm...fries my eggs too! Have one D in
particular that does nothing but back in...in fact he often is just
standing around our blueline while the puck is in the other end. I shriek
myself hoarse.
smott: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 6:38AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hey Sieve. Hmmm I
wonder what the ruling should have been on the repair of Skudra's
glove...ref stoppe dthe game, took a little wind of the Canes' sails.
thought maybe the backup should have been in while repair took
place?...Anyway a break for my Birds, and my goodness but don't they sneak
it out in OT! Poor Arty made a horrible play, couldn't figure whether to
smother or clear, did neither and wound up giving the rebound to Kip
Miller who said "Thank you very much!" Much needed 2 points for
Pens!
smott: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 6:39AM PST (-0700 GMT) Yes Waite on
waivers, and now Recchi in Philly. And they haven't won a game in how long
now?....
smott: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 6:40AM PST (-0700 GMT) Vile I believe
the pokecheck is not a save unless the puck would have gone in the net
otherwise.
Sieve: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 6:52AM PST (-0700 GMT) hi ya smott, yeah
how about arty-- P-U!!! what a way to end OT. Wish I would have seen the
glove blow out. Major missile?
papillon: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 7:50AM PST (-0700 GMT) smot..the
officals said they didn't see the interference...so after missing it twice
I took things into my hands.
Vile: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 8:38AM PST (-0700 GMT) Man, Oilers got
kind of lit up last night. Stars scored 7 goals on only 11 shots, although
the final shot total was 21.
Tripp: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 9:11AM PST (-0700 GMT) Yeah... they
really stunk up the place. Essensa gave up 3 on 3 straight shots,
Shtalentov gave up 4 on 4 in a row. That'll do wonders for the ol' svs%.
That was Shtalenkov's last game as an Oiler. He played himself out of a
job last night. As an Oiler fan, I have only one thing to say. Bring back
Peter Ing!!! I still have a t-shirt that says "winning ends with Ing.
Bring back Fuhr!!" I wonder what car wash Peter is working at these
days.
Tripp: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 10:17AM PST (-0700 GMT) Looks like Corey
Hirsch is back in the minors. I guess with Weekes signig in Vancouver,
there's just no room for that "can't miss" junior phenom. I read
an article thar said he was 35-4-5 in his rookie AHL season. Man, what I
wouldn't give for a season like that. Considering how rookies routinely
get shelled in the AHL, it looks like Hirsch may have peaked too early and
just never got it back.
fourqts: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 1:02PM PST (-0700 GMT) Here is the
deal on Waite and Stelenkov (sp).... When The yotes wanted to send Waite
down, he refused to go on his agent's advice, thinking that the yotes
would have to back down or expose boolin in the waiver draft (due to the
fact that each team must expose a tender with at least 15 games in the NHL
the current year). If Waite was picked off of waivers it would force the
Yotes to either trade for a tender or expose boolin.... Well the yotes get
Stelenkov (sp) from the oilers for a fifth rounder in 2000 draft.... Waite
clears waivers and now have a choice on which to expose in the expansion
draft..... I think waite will be exposed due to his lack of
"working" with the yotes managment team (his refusing the trip
down)..... So the Avs get Fleury.... The Fliers get Recci.... And the
Yotes shore up with Huskrof and Stelenkov...... Watch out for these
yotes!!!!!!! (jokingly)
DJ: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 1:11PM PST (-0700 GMT) Hello again fellow
goalers. I posted a couple inquiries about Battram pads a couple weeks
ago. Got some great replies too. I'm pretty sure that I'm going with Scott
but I'm also interested in Kay equipt. Anybody have any KAY pads or info
about them (rumors, hearsay etc.)? The reason I'm torn is because it seems
that Kay will customize the pads while Battram stays with his stock
designs. As always, yours in goaltending. DJ
fourqts: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 2:24PM PST (-0700 GMT) DJ I think you
mean his stock patterns???? He has both the wave and the angle patterns
but allows you to custom color them... As for Kay have not heard good or
bad about their products.... If you are looking for a more custom look to
your pads, I'd suggest air brushing them like dunham, Sheilds and a few
other NHLer's do.... I think that looke great.... I'll look at kay's site
and try to get an idea on the workmanship (if they have closeups)..
Sieve: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 2:33PM PST (-0700 GMT) DJ, dont hear too
much about Kay, but every set I've seen either live or on the Internet
have some crazy designs on them. Smiley faces and the like...
fourqts: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 2:57PM PST (-0700 GMT) TOok a walk
onto the kay site and I'll agree with Seive on the funky design hit....
Here is my take on the site.... 1. I don't like the fact that he is
talking about how flexible his pads are brand new.... My Batts were stiff
to begin with, as are all the "high end" pads I've seen that are
made in canada (vaughn, Battram, Leferve, High End Koho, ect...) Generally
speaking the stiffness is due to teh amount and quality of the stuffing in
the pad.... If it were super flexible out of the box, I would tend to
thing less dense padding material is being used. Also are they are
suggesting that you use your pads super tight? Most nhler's that I see
wear their pads relatively loose so the pad twists on your leg in the fly
and presents an 11" face to a puck..... That Is how I have come to
wear my pads for just that reason.... Also wearing the top strap tight
will bend the knee and force you to keep your knees closer together when
you fly or leaving a gaping fiver for the shot... So I'm not to sold on
the maker using his own equipment. 2. I did not note where they discusses
sizing and or options for their pads on the site.... IE toe options,
straps and positioning, or even a rough sizing chart (Scott has you
measure like 10 places on your leg before he makes your pads) So I think
that they either have a bad site designer (who knows nothing about all the
things they will need to make the pad right for you) or that the company
is more concerned with their funky designs than they are about how the pad
fits and works for you... 3. The prices show $825US plus the custom
designs are extra bucks.... How much, call for an estimate.... Batts says
1150 canadian (.6561 exchange to US at close of currency market today
makes it $754.51)..... So there is my take on the Kay site...... and the
three reason's I never even considered ordering from them.
fourqts: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 3:02PM PST (-0700 GMT) On to bigger
and better things.... Going to see the Yotes and Vancouver tonight.....
Maybe the yotes have a chance tonight....... Just maybe.
Carpe de Puck: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 3:17PM PST (-0700 GMT) Heres my
2 cents. Scott offers the wave and angle patterns on his site as a
standard product. That does not mean you cannot have a design made for you
and applied to the pads. I know this first hand because I worked with
Scott on the design of my pads via E-mail and phone/fax. I guarentee you
that no one has yet to see my pads on his web page(last I checked). He is
supposed to add the design eventually but I guess he's too busy or changed
his mind. It was supposed to be called the DYNASTY line and offers a new
twist on the star design you see on Brian's and Heaton(Kolzig) pads. If
anyones is interested I can send them a pic of my gear. I suggest you
call/E-mail Scott and tell him what design you want on your pads and he
will do it if it is possible and give suggestions on your design if it's
not quite doable. I know of only one person who has used KAY gear, I will
look for his E-mail in case you want to talk to him. Go with Scott's gear
and you will not be disappointed and you will save some money.
Carpe de Puck: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 3:21PM PST (-0700 GMT) The
E-mail of the owner of the KAY gear is GARDIEN@prodigy.net, ask him about
KAY gear and then decide for yourself. But I bet you'll find Battram's a
better deal in the long run.
C5: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 4:13PM PST (-0700 GMT) Goalies added
to the picture page: Brathwaite, Barasso, two COOL ones of Hackett, khabby
and MacLean.
deke: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 8:35PM PST (-0700 GMT) Hey DJ: CdP is
right, I owned Kay pads, blocker and catch glove. Of those, the only one I
still have is the catch glove, and that is only until my new trapper from
Battram arrives (any day I hope). I sold the pads primarily because I
ordered the lower end Mirage pad and wasn't happy with all the cordura
used in the face of the pad. I think the pad is a functional design, and I
liked the flexibility, however because the pad had an extremely deep leg
channel, the overall dimensions were too big and a little clumsy. They
were not nearly as light as my new Browns either. When I bought my pads
they were $600.00 U.S. and that was another selling point. At the current
price, I'm not so sure. Tom Kay is a very friendly and helpful guy, but I
had to wait an extremely long time to get my catch glove. I like the
catch, especially the feature of a raised ridge that extends under the top
knuckle joint of each finger. This really helps a lot in the feel of
gripping the glove with your hand. The shape of the glove is not entirely
to my liking, thus the sale. That and all of the high praise for Battram
on the chat. I hated the blocker. But that's probably just me. I now use a
Vaughn 1050 that is completely flat (like all blockers used to be) I find
it much easier to direct pucks and control rebounds with a flat surface,
but I know I'm in the minority there. Feel free to e me at the address
given by CdP if you have other questions.
Tripp: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 9:05PM PST (-0700 GMT) Well, smottly
spice... looks like the Pens get the ever-irritating Matthew Barnaby in a
straight up swap for Stuuuuuuu Barnes. Good or bad trade for your
Birds?
DJ: . . . . Thu, Mar 11, 10:47PM PST (-0700 GMT) Wow. Thanks again
all for the quick response to my Kay question. I don't know. Maybe it's
all too much with all the selections out there. Years ago all I bought was
top end Cooper - come to think of it that was pretty much all there was.
Now, well I just went to a local hockey shop today for a stick (I have 2
playoff games 70 miles and 4 hours apart Friday!). Goalie heaven I call it
cause they have all the popular lines and I tried on some Vaughn 5500',
just for sizing purposes, and eyeballed Brians, Browns, Heatons, Bauer
etc. Then on the web are the Battrams, Kays, Thompsons, Mitchells,
Millers, Bodhams et all. Confusing. I mean, really, it's a pleasant
problem to have. I just gotta pick one, Battram's I know, and pay the man.
Tnx again. Dj
C5: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 6:06AM PST (-0700 GMT) Deke, you're not the
only one who prefers a flat blocker. Although, it does have a small break
at the top. I wouldn't go for one of those mis-shapen waffles because a
blocker is used for much more than just re-directing outside shots to the
corner. If you need a warped blocker just to properly handle an outside
shot you probably should try a different position.
C5: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 6:07AM PST (-0700 GMT) Also added a cool
pic of Essensa the other day.
C5: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 6:19AM PST (-0700 GMT) It's a conspiracy.
This AM I'm going to be adding THREE Hackett photos from last night's
game. Two are excellent, and one is a PHENOMENAL, awesome pic that'll be
up on the page as long as he's in the NHL. Also added: Schwab, Thibault,
and Roy, back from injury. Check it out! Link below.
smott: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 6:27AM PST (-0700 GMT) Barnes for
Barnaby...oh dear. Trippster on the surface I would have to say this deal
hurts the Pens. A 30+ goal scorer for a single-digit guy? I think of all
the close games the Pens play, that loss of O could really hurt. However,
Pens absolutely need someone in the stir-it-up Kasparitus/Samuellson mode.
I would have greatly preferred Ulf, they need so much help on D. However
having said that, if Barnaby gets his head on straight he could help a
lot, primarily on the 3rd line, mix it up, make some big hits etc. And
last year he had a very good playoff. Pens need the emotion he brings to
the game. It was forgone they would get rid of Barnes, but I'd hoped they
would get someone with fewer question marks surrounding him.
C5: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 6:58AM PST (-0700 GMT) Also added: Some
cool pix of Schwab. Nixed the Roy pic. It wasn't that good.
GoalieHawk: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 7:50AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hey
goalies..... Great game last night for the Colorado Avalanche against the
Flyers. A lot of good end to end action..... Anyone see Patrick Roy almost
score? It was great. I didn't notice him shoot the puck, I just heard the
color commenter say that Roy is going to score. The puck went in, but
about 20 feet from the net the horn went. Too bad it isn't basketball or
it would have counted. Good win for the Avalanche though.
fourqts: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 7:51AM PST (-0700 GMT) Vancouver
trounces the yotes 3-0..... All three goals were soft.... One, a flopper
from center ice area Boolin mis plays it trying to go paddle down (similar
to the one in Pitt). Two Off boolin's skate and in... Three a fiver from
the circle..... DOH.... And After the first goal on boolin... Schonfeild
(sp) in his ever present wisdom decides to quit forechecking and trap the
rest of the game. And to make matters worse..... the JR, Drake, and
Tkchoke line which appeared to be getting it together the game before last
is split up..... Lines are Adams C and Drake and Tkchoke.... JR Tocc and
Isbister. Briere Stapleton and sullivan.... Tocc and Izzy had bad games JR
seemed to be feeding the puck to places where his wingers should have
been... but nobody home.... They out shoot Vancouver by like 13-14 but
they looked good at hitting garth snow in the chest with weak shots.....
Another Flameout in the first round??? looking more likely than not
smott: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 9:26AM PST (-0700 GMT) Gosh 4q sorry
your puppies are struggling so bad. I didn't think they could lose this
much confidence after such a solid start....or have teams figured out how
to play them?...I think Detroit is going to come on in the post season,
AVs too. My eye is on the Leafs back East to do some damage....
fourqts: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 9:57AM PST (-0700 GMT) I'd agree with
the leafs doing damage in the east..... But so much hinges on having a hot
goalie come playoff time..... I think either buffalo or the leafs come out
of the east as of right now..... And out of the west comes...... Drum roll
please..... The Quacks or the Stars (If Eddie can keep his cool)..... I
think thaos four teams are playing a level above the rest right now.....
My pups are going to go in with a hurt tender (I think either boolin is
not telling the coach or the coach is playing him at 85% and feel the
latter is maor likely knowing Schonie's history) and a team that is not
putting anything in the net... BooHoo for me.... But you have to admit
that the Phoenix crowd in the playoffs is just incredible..... At least we
get two whiteout games.......
Tripp: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 11:23AM PST (-0700 GMT) I got to try on
a demo pair of the new WAAHH gloves last night. Jeez whiz those things are
solid. A bit heavy for my liking, and kinda stiff, but that could be
because they were so new. No doubt they're well-built, though. I
especially liked the blocker. Great protection in the thumb area. It's
alomst like wearing two blockers.
Toast: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 11:24AM PST (-0700 GMT) Ah, the
whiteout...a good old Winterpeg tradition (along with tux night...).
Playoffs predictions...here in Leafland, I will be surrised if the Leafs
win more than 1 round. The team I am worried about is just down the
highway. When Dom comes back, the struggling Sabres will be back on track.
They are something like 1-7-1 without him over the last few games.
Toast: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 11:25AM PST (-0700 GMT) Ah, the

Toast: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 11:27AM PST (-0700 GMT) Oops...ah well.
By the way, what league has a team in Albequrque (sp?). My brother went to
a game there and had some interesting comments about it.
Tripp: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 11:30AM PST (-0700 GMT) Ya know, another
big factor in the east will be the seedings. Playing a big, physical team
like Philly or NJ will take a lot out of a team. But if you can draw
Carolina, Pittsburgh, Toronto, etc... in the first round, your team
probably won't take as much punishment. Punishment or not, facing CuJo in
the playoffs isn't really a good situation. The Leafs could be really
tough. I can't say that they'll challenge for the Cup, but they could
definitelty take out someone like Philly.
smott: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 11:45AM PST (-0700 GMT) Yep I think
years of bleeding for the Leafs has made Toast unnecesarily pessimistic.
They could easily make conf finals. I think Cujo might even be an MVP
finalist. Big question is whether Philly can possibly keep this choke
going long enough to crash in the playoffs...here's to hoping!!
smott: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 11:47AM PST (-0700 GMT) As for my Birds
they have been scarily up and down, win a bunch, lose a bunch, win a
bunch....Need Barrasso healthy but that won't be anytime soon. Kaspar I am
sure is out, which is why I think Patrick isn't done trading, hope to see
another big D in the fold soon. Jagr needs to lift the team, after last
year's feud with KC this is his big opportunity. And I do hope Barnaby can
bring some much needed spark, else that trade is a bust.
Vile: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 12:35AM PST (-0700 GMT) 4Qts, good call
on the Quacks... They are really moving into the playoffs with momentum.
Quacks v. Stars tonight could be a great game. I am hoping Quack has to
play Avs second round. The team I still fear the most for my Stars, are
the Avs. I would like someone to take them out first. I am having serious
doubts about the Wings. They have managed to pull out a top spot in a weak
central, I just wonder when they are planning to really turn it on...
smott: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 12:51AM PST (-0700 GMT) ...I think the
Wings have a bit more left in the tank than they have shown.
Tripp: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 12:58AM PST (-0700 GMT) and they're
probably going to make a trade or two before all is said and done.
Fourqts: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 1:04PM PST (-0700 GMT) I think the
Dead things problems will be shown early in the playoffs..... That problem
is..... they won in spite of ozbad last year..... I don't think they can
this year.... The way it is going right now (The ducks appear to have
enough momentum to gain the fourth spot) I'm hoping the yotes fall to 6th
in the division and have to play the wings in the first round..... that is
about the only hope as the Quacks have had their number all year.
Vile: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 1:47PM PST (-0700 GMT) I played pick up
again at lunch today. Same guy, same shot, and exactly the same spot on my
elbow... man that hurt
C5: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 3:32PM PST (-0700 GMT) Although I don't
want to appear to be knee-jerk jumping to Ozzie's defense, I think he did
some some playoff composure last season, and apart from the longballs he
did put in solid, if not Cujo or Roy level, play. If the Wings go down
this year I don't think we'll be able to blame Ozzie. Personally, I don't
think Ozzie learned enough from Vernon. You rarely see him finding the
shots through traffic (using the same psychic abilities) like Vernie
could. And his focus seems to break at times.
C5: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 3:33PM PST (-0700 GMT) Vile, check the
puck. It might be a special homing puck he brings 'specially for you.
deke: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 7:24PM PST (-0700 GMT) Ranger watch: Wow
what a third period! Rangers and Bruins go into the third tied 1-1.
Rangers go up 2-1, Bruins tie, Rangers go up 3-2, Bruins tie, Rangers go
up 4-3, Bruins tie, Bruins go up 5-4 with two minutes left. Bruins hold on
and take the two points. Huge win for Bruins and equally so for NYR's.
zen: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 9:07PM PST (-0700 GMT) Go Bruins!!!!!
Nothing like a good old fashioned battle for the last playoff slot to
bring out the best in a team.....
fourqts: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 10:42PM PST (-0700 GMT) quacks streak
broken by the stars tonght...... So the quacks roll into phoenix for the
yotes game of the year.... I do believe that tomorrow tells all for the
yotes.... A win and they prove to themselves that they can beat the
ducks.... a loss and they go into the playoffs (more likely than not
against the ducks) against a team they could not beat all year..... Best
of luck Yotes... sorry I've lost my confidence in your ability to win this
one... but you have shown me nothing over the last month...
gbfreeman: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 3:49AM PST (-0700 GMT) Had a great
night tonight. Went to see the WCHL San Diego Gulls play the Bakersfield
Condors. Bought an autographed Beezer photo. Great shot of him in his
panthers uniform. Gulls won the game 5-3. Outshot Bakersfield 63-20. The
goalie for the condors was Brad Guzda. He got second star of the game
while losing. Man he was great. Watched his defence consistently put the
puck on the Gulls sticks in front of the net. He got a standing
"O" from the San Diego crowd when he was announced as second
star. And on a TOTALLY different track. Have any of you seen the new
Bambino bears? They were selling three different ones at the game tonight.
Brett Hull (white with green letters), Paul Kariya (purple with white
letters) and Dominic Hasek (Blue with red letters?). Wife bought me the
hasek bear. The tag reads "When the acrobatic Dominator's on the ice,
the opposition can slap and jam and Bamm all the want. They're not getting
in".
gbfreeman: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 3:51AM PST (-0700 GMT) And in a
truly bizzare twist, the backup goalie for the Gulls was hurt tonight so
they suited up their PR assistant. He didn't get in the game.
C5: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 10:28AM PST (-0700 GMT) GB, buy me one of
those Hasek bears sometime if you get the chance? I'm good for the money.
:-)
Sieve: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 3:19PM PST (-0700 GMT) hi all. 4q, be
careful what you wish for, you might just get it (Wings/Dogs matchup in
the 1st rnd). They do look terribly inconsistant right now but there sure
is a lot of playoff poise on that roster. >>tangent<< man,
what a bust of an acquisition Uwe Krupp was!
Sieve: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 3:23PM PST (-0700 GMT) All of this
playoff chatter and no mention of the mighty Senators. Heck, I'll take 'em
as a darkhorse. As long as they dont have to resort to a physical game...
Jump on the wagon now while there's plenty of room.
Carpe de Puck: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 4:31PM PST (-0700 GMT) Got the
mask back yesterday evening with the new paint. Need less to say I am VERY
disappointed with the product I received. I'm sending it back as soon as I
get the guy on the phone to tell him what a piece of fecal matter he has
created. CdP's advice to the masses who are considering having a mask
painted soon or in the future. Go with Miska since he seems to be the only
one who can REALLY create high end graphics on a mask. I am so pissed it's
not funny. Whats worse is I waited 32 days to get the damn thing back
thinking you can't rush quality and now I have a paint job that sucks. If
I had only paid 150-200 for it I wouldn't be complaining, it'd actually be
pretty good but for the price I paid I expect WAY better. I've already
talked to Todd Miska about painting my mask. I knew I should of went with
him in the begining but I was giving return business to a vendor who I
thought I could count on. Come monday morning the first thing I'll do will
be to call him again. Whats even worse is the guy tells me over the phone
how good it looked so I was expecting just that, a good looking job.
Brother, some times it seems like you just can't win.
Tripp: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 5:06PM PST (-0700 GMT) Jeez CdP... how
do you REALLY feel about the paint job? Whew! Sorry it looks so lousy,
though. Todd has done several of my masks, and I have yet to be
disappointed. They all get mounted on my wall when I'm finished with them.
We're also working on another one as we speak. My one and only complaint
is sometimes Todd gets too much going on at once and gets sorta forgetful
about answering e-mails and stuff. Sometimes it'll take him a week or two
to get back to ya. But he's definitely an excellent mask artist. Well
worth the coin.
C5: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 7:47PM PST (-0700 GMT) Oh, man, CdP, that
bites about your mask. Keep us posted. Give him a second chance and a week
to do better work at least. It sounds like, though, if this is his best
work, you're better off with someone else.
smott: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 9:35PM PST (-0700 GMT) WOW did anybody
see Jagr's goal vs Philly this afternoon?? Sliding on his butt past Hexy
he taps in his own rebound out of mid air. GO check highlights, don't miss
it. I watched Lemieux his whole career and not sure I've seen a goal more
remarkable.
smott: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 9:36PM PST (-0700 GMT) ...and Barnaby
did charge up the Guins that's for sure. Very fiesty, he seemd to really
spark them. I hope that lasts. Pens giving up over 30 goals for this guy,
if he doesn't deliver on the intangibles it will be a bad deal. But a
great first showing.
smott: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 9:38PM PST (-0700 GMT) For moi, salavged
a 6-6 tie in C, after trailing 4-1. Zip warmup as usual, first goal a
breakaway on the first shift. Boy was I ready for it too. Actually the
warmup was funny. The ref blew the whistle and stopped it, after he
counted 9 shots, of which exactly one was anywhere near me. Then he
grabbed a stick and a puck, said "Don't these idiots know how to warm
up a goalie?" And snapped a few shots at me to help me get ready.
Nice, huh?
zen: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 9:59PM PST (-0700 GMT) A rare ref indeed!
But the question begging an answer: Who needed the warm-up? Especially in
light of the 4-1 deficiet...
zen: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 10:02PM PST (-0700 GMT) A rare ref indeed!
But the question begging an answer: Who needed the warm-up? Especially in
light of the 4-1 deficiet...
RocketGoalie: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 10:14PM PST (-0700 GMT) Well,
I've been busy again but decided to check in after months of being gone.
Went thru the old chat log and saw someone bought some K-2 goalie inlines?
Where'd you get those? I'm looking for some top notch stuff and with CCM
752's and Bauer 5000's around $400, I'd love to find out more about
those...how do you like them?
RocketGoalie: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 10:19PM PST (-0700 GMT) I also
saw Scoop has a buddy moving to San Diego...does he (she?) play ice or
roller? If it's ice, there are 3 places within about 30 minutes of each
other with league play...some pickup too, but not much. One place is
closed for a month or so while it gets the ice and boards re-done. Tell
him to check out a rink in Escondido (Ice-O-Plex, owned by Luc
Robitaille), one in Mira Mesa (called the Ice Arena) and one at UTC
(called Ice Chalet).
RocketGoalie: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 10:25PM PST (-0700 GMT) And the
last comment is for DJ (and anyone else buying equipment). I've got
Battram Bold pads and am dying to get my catcher and blocker any day now.
The pads are GREAT...took about 7-8 weeks to get. My glove order went in
on Dec 29th and it's taking a bit long, although they did take a couple
weeks off for vacation time. Scott's a great guy (used to visit this site)
and he'll tell you everything you could possibly want to know about his
stuff and anyone else's. I found him to be honest about other guys
too...giving good ones credit and others, well...some make only marginal
stuff. The best part about Scott is he'll take the time to educate you if
you need it and to custom fit the pads just for you (which is extremely
useful if you have any special needs like extra knee support, extra
padding somewhere, different size legs). His place is about 30 minutes
outside Toronto and if you have a chance to visit, it's well worth it.
Also, he'll do custom patterns and colors......
RocketGoalie: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 10:29PM PST (-0700 GMT) I just
played my first ice playoff games and won the first two. Lost in the
finals to an experienced team 4-0. My team had better talent but just
didn't play their best game. The other team played their best game and
capitalized when we broke down and gave them breakaways and
three-on-one's. I stopped 4 of them, but 2 went in and the other two goals
were flukes, although I shoulda had one of them. Just wait 'til next year,
right?
GoalieHawk: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 11:01PM PST (-0700 GMT) Hey
goalies..... I had a game this morning. We won 4-2. We now secured a berth
to the state finals! Our overall record is 17-0-0..... Anyone catch Jagr's
goal today? Man was that sweet.
GoalieHawk: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 11:07PM PST (-0700 GMT) One more
thing..... How do you clean your equipment? For example. How can you clean
your mask? Like make it shine, like it's brand new. What materials and
cleaners? Also, how can you mantain your pads? Keep the leather nice, and
help your straps have a longer life span.
z-man: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 11:08PM PST (-0700 GMT) Hey
RocketGoalie, I was the one with the K2 Goalie Inlines. I got them at Play
It Again Sports on sale for $149US. They were the only pair, a demo, and
they were in my size, marked down from $249. They are a special order item
and I don't know if K2 still makes them but the model is just
"Goalie". They are real heavy from being covered with plastic
and have 64mm wheels. They have a low center of gravity with almost no
space between the bottom of the boot and the wheels. If I had a camera I
would send a photo. I am real happy with them, and am glad I finally found
a skate good for roller hockey, I was falling on my ass with my old Nike
standard hockey blades.
z-man: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 11:14PM PST (-0700 GMT) Carpe de Puck,
where was your mask painted? I want to know who to avoid!
zen: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 11:29PM PST (-0700 GMT) Smot, FYI, I meant
your team, not you!!!!
RocketGoalie: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 11:37PM PST (-0700 GMT) GH - ol'
Mr. Battram gave me an idea for pads once...spray them with silicon spray.
I never did it but he says it helps. And, yeah, that Jagr goal was
absolutely incredible!!
RocketGoalie: . . . . Sat, Mar 13, 11:39PM PST (-0700 GMT) Zman -
thanks for the info on the K2's...wonder how to reach K2...guess I'll try
them online or check out a box the next time I'm in a sports store.
Carpe de Puck: . . . . Sun, Mar 14, 8:10AM PST (-0700 GMT) Believe
it or not, I sent my mask back to Pro-Masque to be painted by his
painters. From the other masks on the site not to mention Dwayne Rolosons
the quality is tops, nothing sloppy about it at all. I don't think what I
got was the norm and I'll see come monday if he agrees with me once I get
him on the phone. I just can't figure out why he would even send it to me
if it was such a bad job. Personally I wouldn't of let it leave the shop
and I'd notify the customer that I wasn't happy with the quality and was
having it done again. I think that would satisfy any customer, showing I
was willing only to send the best out of my shop. I'm hoping this turns
out for the best and not the worst. I'll tell you one thing though, I'm
glad I paid with a credit card. I've already informed them of my situation
and from the looks of things I can't loose on this one. 1) I'll have the
mask repainted(by MISKA) at no cost to me bearing he cooperates or 2) I'll
inform the credit company he was un-cooperative and they will handle it
from there and I am not charged a dime. CdP's advice to the masses
again.....PAY WITH A CREDIT CARD. I'm glad I glanced at the little book
they send with the card otherwise I wouldn't of known that I had this
protection.
Carpe de Puck: . . . . Sun, Mar 14, 9:01AM PST (-0700 GMT) I think
Jagr's goal sliding goal, Beezers diving glove save, Billington's glove
save on Jagr and maybe a few others will be seen in the highlights or even
the ESPYS. Brathwaite was looking pretty good last night. He definatly
likes to play the puck and has a pretty good shot too. Perhaps we will see
more of him on a regular basis now.
Tripp: . . . . Sun, Mar 14, 3:09PM PST (-0700 GMT) I dunno how to
keep a mask shiny. Once the clearcoat starts to go, you're pretty much
scaa-rewed. But I do give my gloves and pads the silicone spray treatment.
I also use a little bit of surfboard wax on the inside bottom of my pads.
Usually all around the area that surrounds the skate. It keeps the snow
and ice from building up too much. Also, dry your pads upside down after
every game. It's the wettest part of the pad, and standing them on their
tops really helps it dry out quickly and keeps the straps and leather from
getting brittle.
C5: . . . . Sun, Mar 14, 5:12PM PST (-0700 GMT) A few comments. Be
nice to the credit cards and they'll be nice to you, especially with small
businesses, but never expect a CC to go after a major account like Sears.
I speak from experience on this. Still, just a complaint gets the big boys
worried because they worry about more than just the CC companies. RG, I
have CCM 752's and they're AWESOME. I definitely recommend them.
C5: . . . . Sun, Mar 14, 5:14PM PST (-0700 GMT) Today was an
especially good day for the Pro Goalie page, but it's been a rough weekend
for my server, which is down until tomorrow at least. Look for Jagr's goal
on Hextall when it's up! I'll announce when it's on. Goalies coming:
Tugnutt, Richet, Belfour (my favorite pic), and some EXCELLENT shots of
Burke. SEE the whites of his eyes!! :D
RocketGoalie: . . . . Sun, Mar 14, 6:12PM PST (-0700 GMT) C5...I
hear CCM's run different as far as sizing...unfortunately, there's nobody
around here (San Diego) with much selection so I can't try any on. I wear
a size 7 Bauer 5000...got any idea what that translates to in a CCM
752?
EdBel4: . . . . Sun, Mar 14, 8:36PM PST (-0700 GMT) hi
gbfreeman: . . . . Sun, Mar 14, 9:47PM PST (-0700 GMT) C5, if I see
one I'll pick it up. If any of you are interested in seeing what the NHL
Bammers bears look like the url is button .
gbfreeman: . . . . Sun, Mar 14, 9:47PM PST (-0700 GMT) Rocketgoalie,
where do you play in San Diego? I play roller at RHI and am getting ready
to wade into the ice game.
gbfreeman: . . . . Sun, Mar 14, 9:49PM PST (-0700 GMT) C5, went on
your site earlier and couldn't seem to find your email address. I scanned
the Beezer autographed photo I got and was going to send the jpg to you.
Also, love the cat experiment. Interesting photo's of your game just off
the parking lot.
C5: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 4:52AM PST (-0700 GMT) GB, thanks! The
server is back up, and check it out for new images. Also, this week I'm
going to be REMOVING images from the page, or else starting a new page for
a new month. Which should I do? It's getting a bit big.
C5: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 5:21AM PST (-0700 GMT) Anyone seen the pix
of Tretiak on the page?
C5: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 6:14AM PST (-0700 GMT) The page now loads
faster. All images optimized and re-uploaded. That Jagr/Hextall goal is
down in the Miscellaneous goalies section.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 6:15AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hmmm anybody see
the AVs pull ROy late when down 2-1 on a PP? Am I hopelessly conservative
or did that seem an unnecessary risk?
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 6:15AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hi C5...
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 6:16AM PST (-0700 GMT) Boy Philly looks
Phlat.....they rescued a point v Dallas, but they are not the same team
lately at all.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 6:17AM PST (-0700 GMT) Also Chatsters,
any feedback on Smith pads? Saw a pair in my game last week, they looked
good, tapered tops and bottoms, sounded soft, no big rebounds. Anybody
used them?
Sieve: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 6:40AM PST (-0700 GMT) hi ya smott,
Smith pads? Dont think I've heard of them. On the Roy pull, I thought it
was a good aggressive move. Took some nads for a newbie coach. Although
the Wings were holding the puck in zone better than the Avs all game.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 7:18AM PST (-0700 GMT) ...hmm I thought
the Roy pull was a needless risk, but then of course I do lack 'nads'!
:-D
C5: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 7:55AM PST (-0700 GMT) I forget when it
happened, but last week didn't a coach pull the goalie with like 2:25
left? A super-aggressive move.
C5: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 8:49AM PST (-0700 GMT) Wanna hear something
nutty? I've been asked to play goalie today at the official opening of the
Thrashers' practice facility! I don't think any NHL guys will be taking
shots at me, though. But I play today at 2 pm. I'm working from home
though so I can do this. The media asked if they could organize a
scrimmage hockey game so they could get some footage of players playing
for the nightly local news. Strange thing, though, it's at Town Center,
which isn't their official practice arena. I'm not sure I follow what's
going on.
Tripp: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 9:15AM PST (-0700 GMT) I've never seen
Smith pads up close, but Tommy Barrasso wears em. Scott Battram could
probably tell you about them if you drop him an e-mail.
Sieve: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 10:31AM PST (-0700 GMT) oh, THOSE are
Smiths... I though TB's pads were home-made by pygmies who live high up in
the Canadian Rockies, and transport them to civilization via mountain
goat. Hmm, guess I shouldnt believe everything I'm told. ; >)
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 11:46AM PST (-0700 GMT) Trippster are
you sure about TB? EVen if they are Smiths, they are clones of the old
square-face Vics. They look nothing like the regular-stuffed Smiths I saw
the other night (they more resembled Skudra's Kohos actually).
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 11:46AM PST (-0700 GMT) C5 ENJOY!!
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 11:47AM PST (-0700 GMT) ....a bit of
news from smottland. I go in for Chemo Round One Wednesday AM. Bad news is
I get the strong stuff that makes you sick and gets your hair. Good news
is there's only 4 rounds, not 6. One every 3 weeks. Hair falls out 2 weeks
after first dose. (3/31 for those interested in marking it in their
planners like me!)
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 11:48AM PST (-0700 GMT) Anyway I am
taking a poll: Wig, Scarf, or Cap??
Tripp: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 11:58AM PST (-0700 GMT) I read somewhere
that TB's pads were made by Pete Smith. In fact, Tom was saying that he
wanted them built exactly to his specs, because he was so happy with the
old Vic's, and that Smith built them for him. Maybe we're thinking of
different Smith's.
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 11:59AM PST (-0700 GMT) ...hmm or maybe
SMith just obligingly copied those Vics. They are seriously ugly
though!
Tripp: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 12:00AM PST (-0700 GMT) And good luck
with your treatments! As far as head coverings go... I say tattoos. Lots
and lots of tattoos. :-D
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 12:04AM PST (-0700 GMT) Tattoos??? On my
head???
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 12:04AM PST (-0700 GMT) ....an Easter
Bonnet came to mind! Or maybe bunny ears.
Sieve: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 12:54AM PST (-0700 GMT) one word
smott... AFRO!!!! Man, those things are cool... (good luck)
smott: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 12:55AM PST (-0700 GMT) Heh heh Sieve
from what I understand, teh afro may be what I get when it grows
back!!!
Vile: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 1:56PM PST (-0700 GMT) Yeah, I've known a
few people that grow naturally curly hair after chemo.
C5: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 2:11PM PST (-0700 GMT) Good luck,
Smottie!!
Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 2:12PM PST (-0700 GMT) Smott, I
say go ahead and cut it all off before hand. That way you never really
have to go through the falling out phase and worry about if only sections
or parts come out at a time. Go ahead and go bald chrome dome the day
before then grow the hair style you want when your done. On the choice of
head pieces for your melon I have to go with: get a good wig( chance to go
blond or what ever color!!) or go with the smooth look. Personally, When I
see people with the scarf I know how embarrassed they must feel about
their condition and am sympathetic for them. But why try and cover it up?
I say flaunt it, let everyone see the magnificents of your smooth head.
Hell, at one point in time the bald look was in fashion for women, make
the most of it. But I think getting rid of all of it before hand will be
less harsh on you physically and emotionaly. Thats my opinion, I could be
wrong but I'm thinking of the best for you :-)
C5: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 2:12PM PST (-0700 GMT) How come no one
mentions Aeroflex pads ever in this chat? I've seen a few pairs and I
liked them. I wore a set once in roller hockey and never got stung, even
when I was playing The Swedes, an ice team that played roller to
"stay sharp." Are these pads still for sale anywhere? I'd love
to look into a set. The lightness would be cool.
C5: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 2:12PM PST (-0700 GMT) CdP, good advice.
Having an illness, even a serious one, is nothing to be ashamed of.
JAKE: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 2:18PM PST (-0700 GMT) GOOD LUCK SMOTT! I
KNOW THAT EVERYONE IS PULLING FOR YOU!! WHY COVER IT WITH ANYTHING, BE
PROUD, AND IF SOMEONE SHOULD ASK, TELL THEM, IT MAY JUST HELP SOMEBODY
ELSE WITH EARLY DETECTION. I WISH YOU THE BEST!!!
Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 2:19PM PST (-0700 GMT) I've
never seen Aero-flex for sale anywhere...lately. I'm not sure if they went
under or were bought out. I do know that several pro goalies were using
the gear awhile back. I always assumed Tommy B's were old Aero-flex
pads.
Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 2:46PM PST (-0700 GMT) The mask
issue seems to be panning out for the good. I'm supposedly the first
person in 10 years to be unhappy with my product, O WELL. However, I was
given the opportunity of having the mask redone at no cost to me with the
option of receiving a full refund and my mask back in original
configuration if I am not satisfied with the 2nd paint job. I have opted
for the refund and will send the mask off to Todd Miska and get EXACTLY
what I want done. Frankly , I am tired of the whole ordeal and just want
my mask back. I never imagined having a mask painted would be such a big
hassle.
Carpe de Puck: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 2:51PM PST (-0700 GMT) I'm sure
that this is not the norm and is a rare thing for the most part but it
figures it would happen to me LOL. CdP's advice: if you see a design done
by X mask painter, go with that mask painter to get that paint job done no
matter what anyone else promises about their painters abilities. It will
save you the pulling of hair and gnashing of teeth that follows a bad
paint job.
Tripp: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 4:07PM PST (-0700 GMT) When I was
younger, both goalies for the Hershey Bears wore Aeroflex stuff. I'm
pretty sure it was made by Tackla. I bought all the used stuff I could get
my hands on. I loved that stuff. I mostly used it in practice, but it was
good gear. Hmm.... I wonder what happened to them?
RocketGoalie: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 5:07PM PST (-0700 GMT) GB...I've
been playing at La Mesa for a few years now. I'm playing on Tuesday's on
Duffy's Labeda "B" (same as RHI's silver) team and might go to
his Thursday "A" team. Been playing ice at UTC...$125 for a 20
game season. The ice isn't too good, but I'm a goalie (with limited
skating/stickhandling ability) so it doesn't affect me too much.
RocketGoalie: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 5:12PM PST (-0700 GMT) A little
warning for you on going back and forth between ice and roller at RHI. The
last time I was there it was uncoated concrete and that can be extremely
rough on pads that aren't thoroughly dried out. La Mesa's got rollon
coating so it's not as rough but I still put covers on my ice pads and
it's kept them from looking too abused ($80 at SFSL). A good mask is also
important...I busted a roller mask the first time out.
RocketGoalie: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 5:14PM PST (-0700 GMT) Oh yeah,
Mira Mesa's about $450 for a 25 game season...the competition's better
(and better still in Escondido, so I hear) but I can't justify the extra
$$$......
Papillon: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 4:11AM PST (-0700 GMT) I got totally
shelled on Saturday night I faced 58 shots, conceeded 9 goals in the first
period, then shut them out during the second and third. I pull myself at
56 mins as someone sat on my hand (spraining the wrist), although its ok
now. We went on to lose 11-6. Basically the whole team sucked during the
first....I had a real hard time trying to refocus after each goal during
the first and it wasn't until the first break that I got my head
together...anyone got any tips about dealing with this type of
situation...
Papillon: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 4:15AM PST (-0700 GMT) I am thinking
of getting a new pair of pants during the summer, we don't have a lot of
choice over here, so I am probably going to mail order from Canada. I have
seen a few goalies wearing tackla shorts, I know Tackla make regular
skaters pants, but do they make goalie pants? If so does anyone know how
they compare to other makes and models? Also feel free to suggest any
other pants that are good.
C5: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 5:32AM PST (-0700 GMT) Papillon, check out
Mostly Barrie Hockey, www.mbhockey.com, I really have had good experiences
with them so far.
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 6:12AM PST (-0700 GMT) CdP I'm curious
re your mask....what was the design, and what exactly was your
complaint?....They didn't get it right or the finish quality was poor or
what?....
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 6:28AM PST (-0700 GMT) Papillon, welcome
to Shellack Street! We have all been there. I get pasted reguarly about
once a week with a very poor team (C- level) in a fairly fast B+ league.
WHen you're getting lit up like an Xmas tree it is a real challenge to
keep focus. Just try to keep your mind in teh now, not worry about the
goal that maybe just went in, or the next thing that might happen....just
stay in the moment.
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 6:29AM PST (-0700 GMT) I sometimes play
little games w/myself to keep a good attitude...sometimes I count shots
(as you did!), and focus on trying to keep teh save percentage up high, as
opposed to worrying about the actual number of goals.
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 6:30AM PST (-0700 GMT) ...another trick
is to play the game in 5-minute increments mentally. See if you can shut
them out for a 5-min span. This is especially handy when you're getting
killed out there. Each 5 mins you survive without letting in a goal can be
a mini-victory. I like that one.
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 6:32AM PST (-0700 GMT) ...and for moi,
escaped with a narrow 4-2 win last night. Me and my B team of 35+ yr olds
started SLOW! 11 PM start-times (WAY past our bedtimes!) will do that to
old folks. 5 mins in we were down 2-0, a nice tip in from the top of the
crease, and another nice defelction on a slapper by my D, while I gave it
the old Bambi-in-the-headlights stare. Ick.
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 6:33AM PST (-0700 GMT) We finally tied
it late in the 2nd, got a PP goal in the third, and held on for an EN in
the last few seconds. I got in the way a few times.
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 6:36AM PST (-0700 GMT) Oh yes Papillon,
Tackla makes a superior pair of goalie pants. Also the Brian's Ridge
enjoys great popularity here on the Chat. I have COoper R5's which were
good to begin with but are getting a bit thin on the thigh, I get stung
now. Mostly Hockey Barrie is good, also try Source for Sports London, but
don't believe what they tell you about McM being the greatest stuff since
sliced bread.
Papillon: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 7:13AM PST (-0700 GMT) Regarding the
goal pants...we just got a sponsor for our team...the company asked us
what kit we needed, I got all new kit (except pants) when I started, so
the only thing I would be pants and sticks, so I am looking for
recomendations for a good pair of pants that will suit a predominantly
butterfly style goalie. At the moment I have a really cheap own store
label pair of pants that are lacking in protection...ouch...any experience
on how pants like CCM/Tackla/Koho/Brian/Bauer/etc...compare against each
other?
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 7:30AM PST (-0700 GMT) ...top of the
line for many brands will be perfectly good. BUt you need to know what you
like and what works best for you. I actually sacrifice a little protection
with my R5s because they are so easy to move in, and mobility is the key
for me. Used to have Brown's which could stop bazookas, but they were so
bulky I didn't scramble as well in them. I have heard here that the
Brian's are pretty easy to move in. But it is up to you, what features you
want.
Sieve: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 7:50AM PST (-0700 GMT) Papillon, Here is
my routine after each goal, take it or leave it: Say two things to
yourself. 1) What didnt I do that I could have done to prevent that goal?
2) FORGET ABOUT IT. Hmm, sounds like Jim Park, eh?
Sieve: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 8:02AM PST (-0700 GMT) Lost my shutout
last night with SIX (6) seconds remaining. ahh well, went 4-0-1 to finish
out season. Playoff start tonite.
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 8:24AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hey Sieve...
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 8:25AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hmmm I lost my
shutout with roughly 57 minutes left heh heh heh. It does remove a lot of
the suspense! :-D
Papillon: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 8:28AM PST (-0700 GMT) Losing your SO
with 6s left....thats real tough, although it not a problem that I have to
deal with, my SO's usually last abot 6s...LOL
Sieve: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 8:45AM PST (-0700 GMT) Hello ms. smott,
Pap. As far as pants go, have only ever worn Vaughn's Currently a pair of
2000s, a few years old and no complaints. Never been stung though them and
they are holding up fine. Have had to sew the crotch back together a bit.
Must be due to my massive splits. HA!!!
smott: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 8:47AM PST (-0700 GMT) Ouch 6 seconds
Sieve...hope this wasn't a lazy-D type breakdown....
Tripp: . . . . Tue, Mar 16, 9:27AM PST (-0700 GMT) I had a pair of
Tackla goal pants a few years ago. They were very well made. My last year
of juniors, I switched to the Vaughn 2500's (now 4000's), and I'm still
using them today. I've used CCM's, Tackla, Vaughn, Brown and Heaton. The
protection is very good in all of them. As far as I was concerned, the
only major difference was the way the pants are cut. Some were shorter, or
wider or whatever. You'd have to be the judge of what feels best for you.
These Vaughn's have really good inner thigh protection. Two flat pads |
